Nothing much happens: bedtime stories to help you sleep

6,956

Having trouble sleeping?  Join Yoga and meditation teacher Kathryn Nicolai for bedtime stories where nothing much happens to help you relax and sleep peacefully. The stories are a soft landing spot for your mind. Rather than letting your brain race through the same thoughts you’ve been chasing all day, we are taking a detour to a calm and comfy place. We tell the story twice and go a bit slower the second time.

You can find our book, "Nothing Much Happens," in over 20 languages. Request your local bookseller to shelve it: https://bit.ly/Nothing-Much-Happens

Recommend to everyone who can’t sleep under sheets
I since I was six or younger I had trouble sleeping under the covers it took me an HOUR to get to sleep I also had to have the fan on high. But since listening I get to sleep a lot quicker than I used to but still take a while keep going Kathryn!

Changed my life for the better !!!
I have trouble sleeping…. Like a lot. This podcast just soothes me. I feel so relaxed during the story, and my mind has happy thoughts listening. I fall asleep usually before the story is told the second time. Set the podcast timer and drift off to a cozy night of good rest. Thank you. My new bedtime ritual. I wake up refreshed and happy.

    Unbelievably effective!
I stumbled across this podcast while searching for something to help my daughter sleep. The first time I listened I was asleep before the episode ended. It has now been a few months and I actually fall asleep before the introduction is over! I haven’t heard the story in a couple of weeks (haha sorry Katherine - it’s a compliment!). I am amazed at how soothing her voice is. I am a dedicated fan and HIGHLY recommend this podcast.

I literally tell everyone I know about this
I am proud to say I’ve been a “Nothing much happens” listener since the (almost) beginning. As I’ve been listening to a few years now, I genuinely cannot count how many times I have recommended this podcast to people I know. During stressful times in my life, I struggle with racing thoughts right as I’m trying or about to fall asleep. So, while I don’t use it all the time, it’s still has a presence in my “night time routine.” Now, as I’m settling into bed and those crazy and most of the time, irrational, thoughts start to pop up, I turn on this podcast. It works so well for me that I haven’t heard the beginning of a story in a while. I did notice some reviews saying they don’t like the ads at the beginning. Since I tend to fall asleep before then, I typically fast forward through them so I can listen to the first few sentences. You should do the same because not listening to this amazing podcast due to ads (which are necessary) is a little bizarre. I digress, this is quite possibly the best thing that has ever happened to me so you should try it! See if it is as revolutionary for you too.

    So simple. So effective.
Katherine Nikolai has the most soothing voice on this planet. Her bedtime stories help me fall asleep nearly every night. And if I wake back up, all I need to help myself back to sleep is to imagine Katherine saying “audio engineering by Bob Wittersheim” and BOOM I’m back to sleep.

This podcast is not for “grownups”.Or “adults”. Or “grown folks”. Or “people older that 17”. I believe that age should not matter. We should all be able to listen to this wonderful podcast. Also I don’t like the ads or subscriptions but I understand that they are necessary financially. I am ten going on twenty one. 😂

The BEST Podcast I’ve Never Listened To!

Please stop breathing into the microphone
Getting through the 4-5 minute intro is frustrating enough but when you SIIIIIIIGH into the mic it makes me want to scream. Please stop???

    No more earplugs?
Since I was little, delicate sounds in the night have awakened me. I normally wear an eye cover, ear plugs, run white noise machines, and turn on an audiobook (yes, over my earplugs) and I still struggle with insomnia and falling back to sleep. But after one month of listening, I am finding myself drifting off so fast, so snuggled in, and not even bothering with ear plugs! Kathryn teaches you how to fall back asleep. I'm so grateful for her work, voice, and imaginative stories of coziness.

    Always puts me to sleep
I don’t write reviews, but I wrote this one because this program works. No matter how wound up life gets me I always find rest when I listen. I bought the subscription and it’s even nicer. Thanks so much Kathryn and Bob!

    My nightly ritual.
I queue up a couple of episodes every night and set my play time for 1 hour. I don’t even know if I ever get to 15 minutes of playtime, most nights, before I am out. When I wake up a during the night I start up the podcast again (rinse and repeat). I also use sleep headphones so I don’t disturb my partner. I think they could benefit from it, but I don’t push. This works for me and I hope that it works for you too. This podcast is a game changer.
  • megan260
    Kathryn is the real MVP!
Love this love this. As a person who has a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep this is 💯💯💯💯. I even bought the subscription which I have never done before. xoxo

    Really helps my sleep
I was doubtful when my therapist suggested this, but this has really been helpful. I usually wake up in the middle of the night and struggle to get back to sleep. But with this podcast, I’m usually fast asleep long before any episode ends! Magic!

    Thank you
I have always had troubles falling asleep and staying asleep. Until I found this podcast. I’m an anxiety driven over thinker that has a mind that just never stops. When I listen to NMH, I feel like I’m getting a hug from someone you care deeply for and all the stress just goes away and I feel safe. Usually asleep within the first 10 minutes. Perfect voice and perfect stories. Thank you for giving me the piece of mind.

    Try something
You should do an episode with Bob. Me, my parents, and my friends wanna know what Bob sounds like. Does he have a calming voice like you? The listeners wanna know! But… yeah I really want to hear you Bob. Shout out to Bob! ———A kid that wanna know PS: Siri gets confused when I tell it to play “Nothing Much Happens: bed time stories to help you fall asleep.”

This is the BEST podcast ever!!!!❤️
This podcast actually works!!!! I fall asleep in minutes it is so relaxing and is truly for everyone. I highly recommend this podcast weather you are 1 or 100. My personal favorites are the ones with Marmalade and Crumb!!! I also think the ads are okay when you do them but if you don’t do them the are highly disruptive and wake me up if I had all ready fallen asleep. I think you should say the podcast is for every one because it is!
  • Datrandombobakid1234
    Satisfied
I cannot sleep without Katherine’s voice soothing me to sleep, I love how she makes sure that we aren’t disturbed while we’re sleeping so all ads are on her voice, her voice is also very calming I love her stories, especially the ones with crumbs and marmalade involved, I hope you never stop, love you!

    Nothing much helps!
I’ve always struggled with falling asleep without white noise. In the beginning I was questioning if I was just weird for listening to this podcast but I honestly conditioned my brain to associate her voice with sleep, the positive comments in the beginning eases my mind before going to sleep. I don’t mind the ads because she still does it with her sleep voice. It took me a while before realizing she says sweet dreams at the end because I truly was never able to get to the end. Playing it again if you happen to wake up will send u right back to sleep. Thank you Kathryn and Rob .
  • connie824
    Thank you😀
Kathryn, thank you for doing this. I started listening to your podcast probably over a year ago and you do such a beautiful job I look forward to listening to you. I almost always forget you’re story the next morning. It’s the strangest thing. If I wake up during the night I rarely remember what you were saying before I dosed off. ( is this normal?) I wear a head band with built in listening device so I just turn my phone back to your podcast and go right back to sleep. It takes me several times listening to the same story before I get the whole thing. I’m usually asleep quickly when I start you up. Which is great!!! I enjoy it so much.

    Nothing much happens
I agree that the Lenovo ad was awful and jarring. Woke me Out of sleep and really startled me in a bad way. Please- Kathryn- you do the ads for your wonderful podcast. Thank you
  • names 12336
    Good but…
I love this podcast but I just feel like the episodes for subscribers is more than the regular ones and I’m not angry but I take at least 3-5 minutes looking for one that I haven’t listened to and is not a subscriber one. But overall I love this podcast.
  • susan4now
    Soothing & Restful
What happened with you doing the advertising?? I was almost asleep when a loud Lenovo commercial came on. It startled me awake!
  • lyokolover
    The best!
I looked for a long time to find something calm and unengaging to listen to. Anything with a plot was too interesting. This is more like having a friend tell you what they did today but you’ve heard it a thousand times. You can tune out and just listen to a quiet whisper. I know this is a business but allowing loud ads is really not the move. I used to listen for an hour and play two episodes but if I do that now I’m rudely pulled out of sleep.

    Help during perimenopause sleep struggles
If you've ever experienced challenges falling or staying asleep, I cannot recommend @nothingmuchhappenspodcast highly enough. Even on nights when I never even fall asleep once, these stories give my brain "a soft place to land," instead of it spinning into a vortex of anxiety, fear, frustration, and intrusive thoughts. During this insomnia-ridden time of perimenopause, I have not found anything to be a sure bet for sleep. And, this is one tool I use consistently that I tell everyone about. You should see how many folks recommend it in the Menopause SubReddit! I hope this helps someone out there. You are not alone.
  • Deemiller60
    Ads
I used to love this podcast. There are many times that I would wake in the middle of the night and this would help me to fall back asleep. I can also understand people wanting to be financially supported for providing their content and I have no problem listening to reasonable ads to help with that as I cannot afford to subscribe to every podcast I use when I’m having trouble sleeping. You even let everyone know that you were going to personally read the ads so they aren’t terribly disruptive to a calming piece of mind. Last night’s ad was not only disruptive but twice as loud as the podcast. I’m terribly disappointed in this and will not be listening any longer.

    Ads
I haven’t heard ads in the middle but I believe it it’s just like all the other podcasts starts out good goes downhill from there
  • Twonome
    Love it!!!!
Found this podcast a while ago! Have to say I'm attached now! Thank you for what you do! I'm typically able to fall asleep in record time. When I wake up on the night- I just turn it back on and fall quickly back to sleep. Highly recommend this podcast to anyone whose brain just won't shut up!
  • Debmcd
    Excellent
Engaging stories, very cozy and relaxing. She has a soothing reading voice. Dinged one star because they’re short, heavy on ads, and it’s more expensive than average to become a patron. I’m a person who downloads enough sleep podcasts to last all night, this is one of my favorites but I don’t go to it often because there are lots to chose from that are longer and cheaper. If you’re a person who occasionally listens to one podcast and nods off early this is a perfect choice.

Such an awesome tool for sleep. Best stories and brain training. Thank you 💕

I just subscribed, am I in the right place?
This podcast honestly helps me to drift off to sleep. I’ve been suffering from insomnia for a couple of years and this helps so I felt it was important to give monetary support. My only question is since I paid for the subscription, there are only a few new episodes. Please advise. Thanks!

    It Works!
Unbelievable how listening to her puts me to sleep every time. My husband laughs when I tell him I never hear more than a few sentences. Love love love this app. Thank you Catherine for your beautiful voice and hard work. I’m finally getting good sleep.

    One complaint
I like the relaxing stories told in a soothing voice. Why only complaint is that it works too well. I’ve never heard the end of any story. Keep up the great work!
  • hobbitpigwizard
    Just lovely
Pure Magic! I want to live in this world of soft simplicity.
  • bobcat6977
    I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ how this works !
BUT IT DOES!! I have tried to listen to it all the way through but I don’t think I have ever heard a single full story! Breezy in Oklahoma.
  • Threestarmom
    So good
Thank you for the calm stories and soft voice, this is hands down the best podcast for getting to sleep.
  • ColoradoOdie
    I fall asleep every time!
This amazing podcast puts me to sleep every time I listen to it! There have been times when I think there’s no way I’ll be asleep after just 30 minutes, and I have yet to hear an entire episode.

Incase of a bad day! 💐
Hello. I hope your doing well 🩷 If not, that’s alright too. Everyone has bad days! ✨It’s totally okay to be a rain cloud! 🌧️ Not everyday has to be sunny ☀️ if your feeling a bit down, here’s a couple things I like to do when I feel that way! 😊 1: Take a nap! It can take your mind off things, and relax you. 🩵 2: Plop some headphones on, and listen to some beats! Maybe something calming, or death metal to rock out too and get all your energy out! 🌈 3: Do a meditation exercise. I recommend YouTube, it’s free! Just type in ‘Calming Meditations’ and pick one that looks fun to you! 🧘🏽‍♀️ 4: Take a shower, if your crying the shower cries with you. It’s relaxing, and maybe even plop down a shower fizzy if you have them. 💦 5: Do some coloring! Grab a coloring book, or print a page out! (If you can’t do either, you can make one yourself!) pick out some pretty colors that suit your vibe, and color away. (If you make them yourself, maybe use a YouTube tutorial!) 💐 6: Read a book! Pick a nice book, and snuggle down in a blanket. It’s a super relaxing way to get your mind off things. ⭐️ 7: Journaling! If you have any spare notebooks, or even just paper, you can easily write down your thoughts. Grab a pen, and write down your own thoughts with your words. 🌺 8: Make something sweet! Maybe brownies, cookies, a cake, or cupcakes! Use a cooking book or find recipes online! 🧁 9: Fidget! Grab a pop-it or maybe some slime and mess with it, it’s fun and cool. 💜 10: Last but not least, grab a cup of hot cocoa, tea, coffee, or whatever you please and enjoy it on the couch. 🐚 I hope this helps, if you ever feel incredibly awful, remember that your family, friends and pets care for you! If you have one of those days, PLEASE! Call 911, it’s not worth it! It doesn’t solve the pain, only passes it to the next person. 🧸 I truly hope you have an amazing day, peace out! ✌🏻

    Sleeping better than ever!
Nothing much happens is for me the most helpful and amazing tool helping me sleep better than ever. Without fail, I’m lulled and soothed into sleep by these soothing and pleasantly mundane stories. They are told in the most calming voice at just the right slow tempo. I am so grateful for Nothing Much Happiness!
  • Shnuzelsnout
    Perfect
Voice and pitch is perfect. I like how it’s a quiet voice not a whisper because I do not like whispering this helps me and my kids go to sleep and I love the stories. I always want to hear more details, but I fall asleep. I also think that I would like more romance stories, but I have not found any other stories or sleep stories with a decent tone and voice, other than maybe a couple on the calm app which I can’t afford right now.

    A soft companion
I started listening to the nightly stories four years ago, and they have since helped me calm down and refuel for my mornings. The stories make me smile, teach me to care for myself and my community, and help me feel grounded in my own body. I am incredibly thankful!
  • trumpeting_angel
Absolutely great, except one small complaint
I have never found a non-drug way to fall asleep that was so effective! The premise is very strong, and Katherine Nicolai is the perfect person to write and tell these stories. The one small thing? I desperately wish she would hold the mic farther away when she breathes the deep breaths. I am sensitive to sounds and I have to cover my head or turn off the sound so it doesn’t interrupt my beginning to relax. Otherwise? Perfect.
  • haybayk11
    Fall asleep fast
I get so excited when I see a new episode come out! Although, I’m not sure why since I have never once made it through an episode😂 I usually fall asleep within 5 minutes! This has been such a great tool for me.

    Disappointed
This show helped me so much through serious sleep trouble. Ads are not relaxing and I’m not interested in hearing an ad mid podcast.
  • Evergreen Parks and Rec
    Great concept
I decided to up the relaxation factor by slowing the speed down to 0.75x.
