Listen to Hotel Corona from 5/13/2020
Please listen to the beautiful story. This should be made into a movie!
  • DostDevil
    Great archive
So many interesting stories in here! I actually don’t really like the Love Commandos reporting, so I would recommend people skip it and start with one-offs.

    Love Rough Translation
I love rough translation and always share it with friends. Its Our go-to podcast to listen to on on road trips. Many episodes have been listened to multiple times. I love getting to here stories from around the world from the people themselves. Can be even more meaningful than travel itself, because you can go to a country but still not hear stories like these!

A NGOs kid i absolutely love this!!!
Such great work and execution by the host and all the participants!! I grew up as an NGO in UA and haven’t been “home” in almost 18 years and haven’t traveled a lot either and this podcast helps me feel connected to the rest of the beautiful world we inhabit

    Love Commandos
The series in Love Commandos was brilliant. I enjoy rough translation, but this was another level. Excellent 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
  • Sexy no jitsu
    Deeply enlightening
I hate that it took me this long to find and get into rough translation only to find out that it’s ending. Such insightful and thoughtful reporting that respectfully highlights other cultures without hyperbole and make it relateable to American culture.

    My favorite podcast
This show just keeps on doing what it does: amazing topics with amazing production.
  • B C V
Most interesting show on the air
This show never ceases to be compelling.

    Finally some real global narratives
It’s rare to have some truly non-American centric journalism spoken from the local POV instead of interpreted from any typical US mindset. Honestly told with sparks of humanity.

    Forever fan
I have listened to Rough Translation from the beginning. I am always sharing an episode or an element of a story from an episode with someone. I have lived overseas for more than half of my life, Gregory and his teams stories are my stories too. I am heartbroken that NPR has canceled this podcast.

It’d be rough when Rough Translation ends
Please continue the show. I can’t express enough happiness a few years ago when I discovered this gem of a storytelling/analysis podcast in the middle of the pandemic. I love traveling more than anything and to have a podcast that can connect me with that joy when traveling wasn’t possible was like a lifeline. NPR (or other media), please consider bringing Rough Translation back. Or even better make it a weekly show!

    😎
As an immigrant living in the US for the last 10 years, this show was a constant reminder that we share a lot more than comes to the eyes!!! Sad you are leaving npr but super excited for the next adventure!!!

    one of the best 💛
Rough Translation brings together my favorite topics: the fascinating and mundane things people do, and the fascinating and mundane reasons why. I love learning about the world, and Rough Translation brings the world to my ears with no judgment and such love.

    One of the GOATs
Definitely one of my favorite pods of all time, and extremely sad to see it cut by NPR. Looking forward to its next chapter and continuing with Gregory's Substack - Rough Transition. Thank you to the entire staff, y'all are producing amazing work!
  • Morgan g
    Amazing, thought provoking podcast!
One of my all time favorite podcasts - You know the episodes are good because you end up talking about them during the week with friends, family, and coworkers. Lately I’ve been talking about the Bad English episode - now I see sports idioms everywhere I look!
  • TrepanThis
    A true gem
I’ve listened to RT since the beginning and started to listen with my daughter (now 12) a few years ago. We love every episode and it offers stories from perspectives you don’t get elsewhere. Please continue the show even if not on NPR.
  • Viry Gonzalez
    One on favorite podcasts!
I am so sad to see this RT go. The episodes connected me to other parts of the world with stories you won’t hear anywhere else. I’ll patiently waiting for another season even if it’s not with NPR.
  • tripodandy
    Love the rough
I learn so much from RT that I wish it could be a weekly podcast. The topics are incredible, the stories so human, normal, and unique.
  • Lyrea74
I love this podcast so much!
NPR I love this podcast so much. Please reconsider the cancellation, it is one of the best podcast out there and deserves to be continued!

    Whyyyyy
Please keep Rough Translation going. It is one of my favorites!!!
  • buddhafrog
    My favorite podcast - brilliant
I work with business leaders taking new international assignments. I coach them on how culture, and how they engage with culture, will impact their success This podcast threads this interctural line so well. It's reported with respect and intent to understand how culture impacts the story they are telling . I always recommend this podcast to clients and colleagues

    Excellent program
Update: so sorry to hear that this is being cancelled. Thanks for so many great stories Gregory and team! Thorough, thoughtful, unique. I appreciate the questions asked and stories sought. Love this podcast!

    Why Cancel?????
This is a really solid podcast. Gregory has a very endearing narrating style. Topics are original and interesting. Why is NPR cancelling this?
  • carlainsf
    So sad
Tried to find an email address to write to the head of NPR to say no no no. Rough Translation is special. I will miss you.
  • Doylekati
    Don’t goooooo!!
    Love this podcast. Period.

    Rough Translation is the best
My absolute favorite podcast and I listen to many. Honestly, not a single dud out of any of the episodes, they’re all bangers.
  • kazeltallahs
KEEP THIS PODCAST, IT’S UNIQUE AND NECESSARY
I just read that NPR is going to cut this podcast?! DON’T!!! It’s a unique perspective on life in other places, from the point of view of the people there but with the context necessary for outsiders to see the big picture. Why cut something so unique and necessary in our global times? if you have to cut, cut something one of the so many podcasts on popular culture or money or navel-gazing. Dont cut one of the few NPR podcasts that leads to international, intercultural understanding.

    35677556 stars!!!!
Rough Translation is an audio passport that makes the world feel both enormous and tiny. Gregory is gentle with big stories, he brings his heart to his journalism. He nails it every time, and this show is a perfect example of the magic a podcast can bring. Will never forget Hotel Corona. I felt sick, SICK!!! to learn NPR was dropping this show.
  • PA-viewer
The earlier episodes were more varied
I loved this podcast in the beginning, and felt that the subjects were more varied. Last year and more recently, it seemed to be mostly about the Ukraine/Russia which I’m not interested in. I know that is an area of the world that has a lot of action currently ,however the world is a very large invest place. Many interesting things are happening at once everywhere. I wish they would continue to diversify the stories to include more from all over the world, and not fixate on one particular area. I stopped listening when every other episode was about Russia or the Ukraine. But if you’re invested in that scene, go for it. Otherwise, curate your listening experience with the earlier episodes.

    Abortion Pill Episode?
Missed the mark for me. “What about the abortions?” comment was odd. She seemed disappointed the pills had been used to save lives of women suffering miscarriages or needing labor induction.
  • Austinnorton
Abortion Pill Episode Missed the Mark
I typically like the show, good quality stories in a well packaged audio format but what was that abortion pill episode?? 40 minutes of suspense for what? A donation that went fine. I get that you wanted to add suspense but I waited for the other shoe to drop the entire time and it was just …….yeah everything went fine. Disappointed 👎🏻

    I love this podcast

    In Awe!
I have been listening to this podcast for sometime now, though the “Stuck@Work” episode really moved me. This subject has been something I’ve been reflecting for quite a bit and the story of the Portuguese journalist and her father just stroke a number of chords. Please continue with that series on work culture and the great content! Thank you.

    My very favorite podcast
If I could listen to only one podcast, this would be it. I love hearing stories from around the world, I love Gregory Warner’s gentle, informed approach, and I love being surprised and gaining new insights.
  • Maekar_I
    Earlier ep. are better
The earlier episodes were great! They really sucked you in. These newer episode though, it’s like they’re trying to be real artsy or something. They’re focusing too much on their new “style” and not enough on the actual stories. I had to unfollow because it was too distracting for me. Definitely check out the first couple seasons though if you’re new to the show. They are amazing!

    Very One Sided
This Podcast leans far left and does not tell the whole story.
  • FieldingQuestions
    Consistently engaging and surprising!
Rough Translation is the podcast I look forward to listening to the most. It is unique amongst all the podcasts I know for its ability to start with one premise, based in the United States, then highlight a contrasting approach to the same situation situation in another culture, and then turn the resultant expectations inside out. If you don’t know what that means and are interested, I highly recommend you give this marvelous podcast a try. In exposing underlying contradictions and ironies, an unparalleled depth of insight is presented. This progression of accounts showcases the complexity of everything. Everything.
  • Cait L Philly
    An authentic and engaging listen
This is my favorite podcast. The stories and subjects are authentic and real and emotional without feeling corny or over the top. Each topic is so interesting and you really learn something, but you don’t notice because you are completely engaged the whole episode. Such genuine humanity comes through that I usually tear up one or twice while listening. Can’t recommend enough.
  • miss cgh
    Always interesting!
The variety of topics is impressive- don’t skip this one!

    Getting Better
“Om in India” and “Refugee Dating Coach” were very relatable like a book you can’t put down. This is the first time I’ve felt it with this podcast but I had unsubscribed due to “fear of death by sheer boredom” a few years back but I’m definitely on the fence and staring in the window —— and I have to say I like the view.
