The Seventh Daughter

327

In the early 20th century, a mysterious woman tutors a young girl in the arts of mind reading and clairvoyance. From the creator of The Control Group comes a story that is both a bittersweet coming-of-age story and a diabolical revenge thriller, bound together by cinematic sound design and an intoxicating tapestry of original and traditional music, providing a kaleidoscopic tour from street-corner medicine shows to vaudeville amusement halls of the era.

    The father
What happened to Pearls father? Rose said she would tell her that story later. Also, it would be nice to know what happens to the other characters like the doctor.

Would it have been that difficult to find an ACTUAL voice actress of Caribbean heritage? The JaFAKEn’s accent sounds like nails on a chalk board!

    Eh
Failed to pull me in. Main character’s performance is flat and doesn’t engage. Story has potential, but I didn’t feel any connection to it.

    Fantastic immersive series
This is a wonderful, original, immersive series. I binged the entire season over two days and I sincerely hope a season 2 is in the works. I listen to a lot of podcasts and this is one of the best from the idea, to the actors, to the music; it’s all top notch.

    Mediocre at best
The story premise had great potential to be captivating and intriguing. However, the voice acting of the lead Pearl was terrible. Her voice had no character or emotion. It was flat and mostly monotone. At first I was unsure if it was intentional and part of the portrayal. But, in the scenes where Pearl was supposed to be showing great emotion and range, it just failed. It sounded like a high schooler reading out loud in a classroom. Rose, on the other hand, had voice acting that was well done. The quality of her voice acting probably made the subpar performance of Pearls stand out more. A couple of other voices weren’t so great, such as Sister Evangaline. Her voice sounded to modern with accent and tone, and not matched for the time period this was set.

    Fiendishly Clever & Captivating
A pleasantly surprising tale about the stories people and tell and the characters they play to get by in a world where the odds are stacked perilously against them. Wicked details paint a vivid picture in this audiodrama that would make for one helluva movie or tv series of the right people were in charge of it.

    Horrible acting
The opening score is unbearable...Pearl sounds like she’s reading a script in a 7th grade play....couldnt listen anymore

    Amazing!!
The voice talent is absolutely amazing!! I think that most listeners are not aware of how hard it is to “read” multiple roles while maintaining the listener’s imagination. Writing is great, all around one of my favorite dramas. I’m on a weekend episode binge and am on episode 7. Keep up the good work all you awesome people 🤪 Shelli

Storyline disjointed, confusing & slow. Listened to all 10 episodes previously downloaded on a 7 hour drive cuz had no reception to listen to anything else so thankful for it. Otherwise lots better use of your time

    Penny Dreadful
It’s a penny dreadful of fiction podcasts. I write this having listened all the episodes, hoping for some redemption. The story is formulaic, there are no surprises, the characters are two dimensional (if that much) and, yes, the voice actress (or direction/editing surrounding the voice) for Pearl is weak at best. If that’s what you’re into, this is a great option. But if you’re looking for actual intrigue and suspense, there are better options out there, folks.

    So good
Just listen. Give it 3 episodes. Great story superbly. Produced and acted

So bad but not in a good way
It’s almost offensive especially the bad accents. Bad voice acting, worse writing.

I think this is one of the best scripted podcasts out there. Fantastic production and intriguing storyline. I binged it. Keep up the good content!

    👎🏻👎🏻Elizabeth Hunter..aka Pearl 🤬
I’m not sure who to blame, but blame is necessary because this drama is about to hit bottom. And it’s all due to one character that is so bad at voice acting that it’s entirely impossible to ignore long enough to get enjoyment or entertainment from the podcast! If you could re-edit or, even better, voiceover Elizabeth Hunter then I think you could save your story... I don’t need to be a mind reader to know that most will agree..

    Weird but fine.
Very strand and somewhat hard to follow but also super intriguing.

    The voice of Pearl...ugh!
Oh dear....as much as I want to love this, I just can’t. The flat unemotional stagnant voice of Pearl makes listening painful. I want to jump into this podcast and shake some feeling and life into the one playing this part. Why didn’t the director of this podcast guide the voice actor? The other voice actors wonderfully portray their characters. The sound designer for the podcast does excellent work.

    There are better scripted Podcasts
This is a pretty decent “Podcast Play”. The sound design is awesome (especially with Code talking), and the voice actors for the most part are good (except for the lead Pearl), but it’s just missing a level of immersive power that other “Podcast Plays” have. The story is trying very hard to be intriguing and you can feel it struggling to say... something. You don’t really know what it’s trying to say. There are some things about race, some things about women, but it’s all muddled in a forced mysterium. It drags and is slow at parts and you really have to focus to understand who is who and what they are exactly doing. I promise you, there are much better “Podcast Plays” out there, with better actors and clearer stories with a much better framing devices to understand the story.

    A Timeless Story
The tale of a con artist who abducts a young girl from a convent under false pretenses and proceeds to exploit her and insult her religion. But the con artist is a good person because she’s black and also warns the little girl away from pedophiles....who wouldn’t have had a chance to come near her if she’d just stayed in the convent. Not the kind of thing I like to listen to.

Excellent writing marred by poor voice acting
There is so much to love here, including just about everything except the acting for Pearl. She’s unfortunately flat and wooden, making some scenes legitimately difficult to follow. When Pearl agrees to work with Rose in Divina’s memory, I genuinely didn’t understand why - a relisten seems to indicate that she’s moved by the story and passionate about honoring the family legacy, but the voice acting didn’t indicate anything if the sort; she sounded just as confused and resigned as she did prior to the story. I’m still going to listen, but Pearl’s performance flattens every scene she’s in, which is an unfortunate quality in a lead actress.

    Waist of time
The story is slow and boring

Amazingly Written! But there is a downfall...
I really love the way this story is written! It’s smart and powerful. This would have had 5 stars but I was just really taken out of the moment by the kid actor playing Pearl. I understand they wanted to cast someone with a young voice, but I really wish they would have cast a more experienced voice actor. At times, I felt like I was listening to a high school actor in a one act play, until Rose had more dialogue, then I was immediately sucked back in. The actor who played Rose was fantastic! Unfortunately, it sounded a lot like they just recorded Pearls lines and put them in at a much later time. She sounds so disconnected from the other actors. The actress didn’t seem to understand the action and feeling the other actors were putting out. She let the tension drop over and over. It was a little disappointing.

    Compelling!
Loved the story and the actors.
  • Thecrster
    Excellent!
Really enjoying the story so far!
  • Khyle?
    So far, so good!
I really like it so far! Voice acting is great, story is interesting and the characters are cool! Didn’t like Rose in the beginning, but she grows on you. I was kind of thrown off by the Jamaican(?) accent Rose was doing in ep.1, sounded forced and fake— luckily I guess that was the point! Not done yet, excited to see what comes next!

    Stop reviewing before you listen
Why are people leaving 1 and 2 stars for a show that hasn’t even come out yet? Give it a chance! If anything leave 5 stars so people can find it, then if you decide to change your rating once you hear the actual show that’s your prerogative !
