Deep Cover: Never Seen Again

3,331

Deep Cover is a show about people who lead double lives. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jake Halpern reveals webs of deception and dark underworlds, through interviews with federal agents and convicted criminals.

Season four, The Nameless Man, tells the epic tale of two federal agents who investigate a rumor about a murder that supposedly took place 15 years prior.  It is also the story of a family searching for answers about why their brother was killed. These two storylines collide in a courtroom in Philadelphia, where murder, memory, and morality go on trial.

Season three, Never Seen Again, tells the story of two women living on opposite sides of the country, who went missing in the summer of 1999.  Seven years later, their stories collided when a small town detective got a tip and became convinced that if he could solve one mystery, he'd solve the other.

Season two, Mob Land, is about a high-rolling lawyer who joins forces with the feds to try to bring down one of the most powerful criminal syndicates in the country.

Season one, The Drug Wars, tells the story of an FBI agent who goes undercover with a biker gang, and follows a trail of clues that eventually leads to the US invasion of a foreign country.

Deep Cover drops on Mondays. To hear all of season four early and ad-free, subscribe to Pushkin+ in Apple Podcasts or at pushkin.fm/plus.

Interesting content, slow pace and too trusting
I’ll start by saying I like this show. I’ve listened to all three seasons. The stories are interesting, and framed and told well. But if there’s a season 4, I’m probably skipping it. First issue, the show moves slowly. I get the repetitive sound bite sense that’s typical of daytime TV - I don’t need to be told the same thing 3 times. And the stories sometimes seem squeezed for additional drops of content, rather than told at a natural pace. Each season could have been 2/3 the length, and I was tempted to speed up the playback. Second issue, each season is based around a single central character, and they all strike me as unreliable. They’re telling these stories in part to make themselves look good or important. Season 1 was particularly bad on this front, with a guy who’s written his own life a novel and seems to want to be seen as a character in hard-boiled mystery books. The host sometimes checks their assertions or verifies with other sources, but far too much is taken at face value, given both their motives and everything we know about memory. I get why it was done, but it reduces my trust in what I’m hearing.

    More! More!
Can’t get enough. I’ve listened to all seasons twice at least.

    Terrible sponsors
Could be a 5 star podcast if Pf*zer wasn’t a sponsor. I don’t care to hear about vaccines when I’m listening to a podcast

    Most unsympathetic person
Sorry but I just can’t with Esther. First off, did you guys validate her sob story, because she comes off as an utter inauthentic bullsh!@er. The only reason I finished the season was to hear the updates on Natalie and Brooke. And the narcissist, aka Esther, doesn’t feel sorry for the pain she caused only just that she got caught!

    Very enjoyable
Jake Halpern does a wonderful job of leading the listener into the lives and the choices of individuals who are living a double life. The podcast is produced to keep the listener’s interest. I enjoy it very much! Each season is unique. I feel like I understand the reasoning of the person making questionable choices!

Struggling to hold up to Season 1
Season one was easily a five star podcast and one of the best I’ve ever listened to. Season two was a solid 4.5. Season three was a two stars at best. I can’t believe I listen to a full six episodes about a psychotic human being who feels more sorry for herself than for the things she did and even worse that the narrator seemed to have sympathy for her.

    Engaging true crime stories
True crime stories with a look into the heart n motivation of the perpetrators. Jake delivers excellent journalism that is personal n relatable without being salacious. I love this show!

    Really!
Her thesis is deeply flawed. She focuses on samples that are not representative of the justice system. She overtly ignores truths (or perhaps does not even know) that do not support her faulty thesis. For example, she does not even acknowledge all the warrants and cases that are never brought, or all the people who commit crimes and are not charged for lack of evidence to prove the crime beyond a reasonable doubt. She disregards all the crimes prosecutors dismiss in the interests of justice despite strong evidence that the defendant committed the crime. She ignores the ethical duties of prosecutors. She does not understand how law enforcement works, nor did she appear to even attempt to educate herself on the matter before opining on it. This is a very poor and ignorant analysis of the American legal system. Decide for yourself, but in my view this book is irredeemable faux scholarship that actively disregards the many safeguards to ensure people are not prosecuted unjustly. Observe court. Observe justice systems of other cultures, which are awful. This opinion piece posing as a book is a great disservice to citizens seeking knowledge, prosecutors, defense lawyers, judges, case workers, treatment provideers and other professionals in a system that generally works quite well. She would know that if she had ever been in a courtroom, represented a client or made even the slightest effort to research the topic.

    Respectful true crime
I love this show, it’s interesting, there’s good storytelling, and it addresses true crime in a more respectful and less sensationalized way than many other podcasts I’ve listened to.

    Season 3 is excellent
I listened to season 3 (not 2 and 2) and was impressed by the thoughtful research, organization, and narration of the story. It avoids the sensationalism and superficiality of a lot of other true crime podcasts.

    Great podcast
Highly recommend this one. Great storytelling and narration. Interesting story about people who have gone through trauma and deal with such in different ways.

    Would definitely suggest it 👍🏽
Great story telling by the narrator. It’s obvious that the team had put so much time into researching and interviews. Stories are interesting and they always leave you totally hooked at the end of every episode. Painfully littered by repetitive sponsor ads.

    Great podcast
This is one of the best true crime podcast I have listened to. Halpern's reporting is straight forward and not sensational. This is true journalism vs an opinion piece with a motive. Well done!

Enjoyed all 3 seasons, can’t wait for season 4! Well done, intriguing, and captivating.

    Truly compelling
I love Jake’s interviews and every season has received the same responsible, thoughtful reporting. There is a lot of salacious true crime coverage (yuck) and this isn’t that. It’s not overly gratuitous to anyone in fact. It’s just honest, thought provoking and well informed. I really appreciate the careful and intentional approach to unpacking all the details and letting the listeners learn along with you what went wrong (and right) in these often confusing journeys. I am looking forward to the ride again in Season 4. 🤩

    Well-told story
Season 3 is the only one I’ve listened to and it was super well done. It is terrifying to me that Esther is a criminologist and professor. I don’t think her problem is social anxiety. People with genuine social anxiety have trouble talking on the phone, meeting new people, dating, etc. The fact that she was able to meet multiple romantic partners, be in intimate relationships, and lie so easily and convincly suggests the opposite of any social anxiety. I know she’s been in therapy, but speaking in front of people would be almost unimaginable for anyone with true social anxiety. And having a sister that is fastidious is not the same as experiencing “emotional abuse.” If she has anything, it’s a personality disorder.

    Should be required listening
For all journalists, lawyers and cops. As far as pure entertainment, it’s as good as anything in its genre

    Great Podcast!
I have been binging and enjoying all the seasons. Great job. Just wondering, with regard to the second season, when listening to Judge Wilson’s (RIP) daughter, was she under the influence of alcohol or drugs?

    Session One - Mind Changer!
Throughly enjoyed this pod cast and couldn't stop listening to! Which, IMO, validates the two-sided face theory that many of us have and who we are, or become, changes constantly, based on the life journey each person's may elect or forced to travel on and how it impacts their heart/mind (good or bad) may determine what side of the face, you can see, or they allow to show!

    Digging Deep
I’ve listened to all 3 seasons. Each has been interesting for its own reasons. I like the blend of intrigue, each of the character’s personal code, their sacrifices, their taunting of fate, and their arc of redemption.

    Great season 2
Season 1 didn’t hold my interest and I bailed after a few episodes. But I am finding season 2 to be riveting.

Riveting trip down the rabbit hole
Have only listened to season three (so far) but I enjoyed how it opens with one story and goes into a different direction. Well researched, follow through and conclusion - as much as you can get a conclusion

    Can't Follow
Way too many ads throughout the already short episodes. I had to restart episodes because I couldn't follow. The narration is underwhelming and repetitive. Meh.

    Will Make You Think
As someone who had a friend who was killed in a high profile shooting, I generally avoid true crime podcasts because I find they are too focused on the most gruesome parts of the crimes and feel exploitative. This podcast was different. It had the involvement of both sides and presented the case in a fair minded, thoughtful way. There are no villains or heroes in this complex story. You do see how the media circus around these cases can take on a life of its own. Unexpectedly, I also saw the relationship between me and my own sister reflected in this story. For those of us with siblings with mental illness, many of us are familiar with how our words can get caught in our siblings minds and how we have to navigate communicating with them in a way that feels honest but tampered with gentleness. I find my own relationship with my sister pretty lonely and rarely explored so it was a welcome experience to see two sisters who I can relate to. Great podcast! Thanks to all involved for their generosity in talking about a painful topic.
  • thatgirljenny
    The cop is something else
The small town cop deep in conspiracy theories and continuing to push the espionage line is a prime example of police bias and how laser focus and inability to see other options derails investigations and pigeonholes people.
  • katefaust
    Neurodivergence?
In listening to this as an autistic person, I’m wondering if Esther and even her sister have some neurodivergence going on. Wondering if the “social anxiety” is induced by social/emotional communication differences etc. very interesting story!
  • Cuzwhy05
    Was expecting for more
I loved the podcast, it was interesting but I’m giving it a 4 because I thought it would cover different types of deep cover cases. Instead of just 1 long story.

    Thoughtful and Thought Provoking

    5 stars for Seasons 1 and 2
Seasons 1 and 2 were excellently told stories and the reporting was top tier. Truly enjoyed them. Jake’s voice is very pleasant. He tracks down interesting characters and gets great information from them. Season 3 was oddly underwhelming. It felt like a different concept entirely and I didn’t enjoy it so much. I hope there are more seasons and that they resemble his first 2 seasons.

    Pretty good listen
Two thoughts: 1. Wondering if there is a connection between Shine and Alex Murdaugh down in that low country. He owned all of those odd little bits of coastal property… 2. It’s “BYOOfurt” SC, not “BOEfort.” It kind of bugs me when journalists don’t bother to check how to pronounce names of persons or places.
