I first encountered Andy Greenwald by way of his work as a novelist. Not long after moving to NYC I came across his novel “Miss Misery,” which I was drawn to for its Elliott Smith referential title. It’s a good book. Years later I was pleasantly surprised to see his name again, this time as a pop culture critic and enthusiast on his previous podcast. I had gone looking for more on my favorite show of all time, The Leftovers, and have greedily devoured all Greenwald/Leftovers material. Thoroughly enjoying the Did it Stick the Landing subseries. One small correction: the quote at the end of the Twin Peaks finale episode about following your obsessions is a great, but is misattributed to Kafka. It’s actually by Anne Rice, from a foreword written by her for a Kafka collection.

Love the new series, we need an episode on The Shield!! Underrated, overlooked pioneer of the bad guy protagonist for cable tv

I love every podcast Jo is on and this is no exception. She’s great and it’s lovely to have a female viewpoint in an often male-dominated world. However, no matter how many times I subscribe or follow this podcast it only sticks for a few weeks when I’m automatically unsubscribed. This is one of my favorite podcasts and I can’t figure out how to solve this technical issue nor why it only happens with this podcast.

Really fun idea for podcast, first season ended too soon. PLEASE do I Married Dora (80s sitcom with bonkers ending that really shook me when I saw it in real time).

The language of the two hosts are annoyingly woke. She made far too many comments about white males and all of that garbage and the dude actually used the term Latinx. listening to Joanna ruins shows with her political views is tedious and a shame.

I want to love this podcast. I really do. The show is incredible and I am eager to bask in the takes and analysis of it. But my god the constant references to the book are exhausting. That the book comments are so often hedged with apologies for yet another book reference is somehow even more frustrating. Take your own advice! I don’t deny references to source material can at times be useful, but when just about every topic discussed is insisted on being anchored to the book, it’s too much. I confess this probably makes the podcast “not for me” as opposed to bad, which is why I’m still giving four stars, it’s just a bummer!

I’m rewatching The Leftovers since listening to the pod a couple weeks ago. Never noticed Perfect Strangers being on TV in a few episodes of season one, but they’re nice Easter eggs now knowing that Mark Linn-Baker will factor in season three. Just finished watching International Assassin. What great hour of television!

I had a full schedule planned this week but then I started to listen to new The Leftovers pod on Tuesday only to realize I need to rewatch all 3 seasons of this amazing show before listening. A love note. Please stop recasting the shows and watching the clock in your watching. Try enjoying the shows for what it is. On rewatch do all of your critics viewing. Sometimes enjoying the show is when it cuts off and you had no idea and are left hanging. Or when you don’t know all of the rumors for the trades. I haven’t watched Phoebe, and she isn’t on the show, so why keep talking about your fan fiction of it? Anyways, thanks.

Andy is the right guy to take a second look at our favorite shows. Time alters the way we see and react to entertainment and Andy is always thoughtful and interesting. I love this Podcast. Thanks Andy.

This podcast makes me hate all podcasts

I love The Ringer and many of their podcasts! This feed has some GREAT episodes: 20th anniversary of The OC was a blast, Rob & Joanna kick butt, Stick the Landing is awesome…please don’t put Charles on this feed. He is the Stephen A Smith of podcasting; all he seems to be capable of anymore is wild takes and hating things just to hate them. Life is hard enough; stop putting this guy and his sweaty negative takes on so many podcasts.

the mumbling of the host on this podcast made me turn off & unfollow. slow down and enunciate!

The problem with this show is it’s forcing me to go back and rewatch all of these shows. Too much TV not enough time ! Great conversations, thanks!

Just finished the first episode of Stick the Landing and loved it. I never would have guessed Andy and Mal would have such good chemistry but they do! Amazing first episode and I look forward to more. Also, people complaining about the ad for the show containing spoilers need to grow up.

Mixed. Fargo S5E9 was a good example. Rob was mostly spot-on. Jo seemed to be trying really hard to be the critic and missed the point of the plot on multiple occasions, seemed to want a big shootout and disappointed that it was nuanced. Subtlety does not seem to be her strong point. Perhaps stick to reviewing Superhero flicks where the action is nonstop and no scene is without mayhem. BTW it’s pronounced “Henry the Fifth”, not “Henry Five”. I cringed.

I don’t care if a show has been out for 20 years, running an ad during other podcasts that actively spoils prestige shows is in really poor taste. Definitely won’t be listening.

Who would listen to a podcast discussing True Detective when one of the hosts just watched season 1 for the first time in 2024? C’mon Dave. Give me a break. Sucker-MCs be bugging.

I'm generally a ringer fan. Love the F1 podcast and House of R. This one is entertaining but listening to The Crown recaps especially season 4, ep. 4 (I think) with Amanda Dobbins has been a test. How can you say that you understand the trauma someone like Harry has gone through and then say she can't stand him because he "wrote 100 pages of killing people in Afghanistan" in Spare. That's a misrepresentation of that part of the book. I remember it as him recounting his experiences in the military in the middle of an armed conflict (maybe she didn't understand that he was a soldier) and not at all glamorizing the situation. Anyway, the self-righteousness was unappealing and marred what was otherwise a fun recap. So I guess it's a good podcast depending on the host.

The Crown coverage is absolute garbage. “Covering” 3 episodes at a time of the final season of one of the most amazing dramas of our time, and spending 40 mins of that “recap” re-casting the show is a pitiful joke. Joanna is an outstanding, thorough recapper and whoever this chick she has on with her feels like she’s forcing her into banal levels of critiques and conversation i didn’t think possible, and certainly not what the crown deserves. I need Jo and Mal to cover the crown, their chemistry is unmatched. Horrendous choice to cover the crown in this way.

What happened to The Curse episodes?

One of my favorites…amazing info and humor…I just struggle getting through all of Joanna’s ‘Umm's’ . Mallory is an absolute rockstar!

Love listening to Joanna dissecting TV with Mal, with Rob, Sean, Charles, etc. but anytime Bill Simmons pops up on a pod it becomes almost unlistenable.

I only listen to eps shows I watched and most have been AMAZING discussions (white lotus, Fleishman in trouble, black mirror). The one I could not stand was Hijack, mostly bc they barely talked about the show .. but otherwise amazing. I wish they would do eps for every show I watch!

Where did you go? We need more!
