How not to travel

342

Hosted by Kiona from How Not to Travel Like a Basic Bitch, the How Not To Travel podcast sheds a new light on travel. Instead of talking about instagram-friendly hotels and the latest trendy destinations, Kiona goes where few other travellers and podcasters dare to go. She asks real questions about travel like: Is it possible to travel 100% sustainably? Who get’s to be called a local? Are some countries really safer than others? And more.Because travel is about seeing the world differently, and this podcast is going to show you how.Produced by Studio OchentaOriginal music by Gabriel Dalmasso.

    Really great.
Remember those educational shows you watched as a kid, they helped make learning fun? That is what this podcast is, but for adults. Gives me the same feels, but it’s not childish. The material that is presented deals with complex topics, yet they make it feel easy to understand and interesting.

    a nuanced take
Dr. Kiona is amazing and has once again delivered 10/10 content. Everyone mad in the comments clearly didn’t listen to the podcast and are just engaging in a hate campaign full of misinformation. If you want to hear a different perspective on complex subjects such as the travel industry (and how they need travel to SURVIVE) during COVID and the Asian-American experience, definitely give this pod a listen. Keep doing ya thing Tía Kiki.

    awful
Kiona continues to harm and put Black people’s lives at risk - she has called the cops of BW and BM, refused to pay folks for their labor or underpays, and sitting idly when her followers make racist attacks against Black-owned orgs. Blocks anyone who points out any misinformation, and continues to profit off colonialism and imperialism while using the language of decolonization. She never stopped traveling during a pandemic, and encouraged others to do so. Look up @nowhitesaviors on ig to see the proof for yourself since she refuses to acknowledge the harm she is causing with her podcast and work.

    Anti-Black and elitist
How can I give zero stars? The podcast is boring. Trust me I actually did subscribe and listen to 4 episodes. I couldn’t get past that. It was very obvious that each episode was dripping with privilege and underlying anti-Blackness, and that’s not something I want to listen to. Can we also talk about the fact that Kiona didn’t cease traveling at all in the middle of an entire PANDEMIC? Talk about entitled and ignorant. She has been violent and harmful towards Black women on social media and her podcast centered around traveling amidst an entire global health crisis that disproportionately affects Black and Brown people shows that she truly doesn’t care about anyone but herself.

Dr. KIONA is an antiblack RACIST
She is antiblack and elitist. She makes threats to call the police if you call her out and she is colonizer

    Anti-black
Your anti-blackness should be examined by your peers. Do better.

    My favorite educational podcast
This podcast helps me realize the ways I don’t even realize I’m being prejudice in many different ways. It changes my perspective on something every time a new episode comes out. Do yourself a favor and listen!!

Title is great, actual podcast not so much
Man, I really wanted to love this podcast, but I don’t. Each episode is the beginning of what could be a great episode if the topic were explored more and actual advice were given. For example, on the travel safety episode, Dr. Kiona does a fantastic job outlining travel advisories and their perceptions and biases. She then tells us that she was sexually assaulted multiple times in Morocco and about the typical victim blaming response she received upon telling her story both publicly and to friends. I really wish she had continued the episode with HOW to best travel safely, especially as a solo woman, but it just stops there. Dr. Kiona also sounds like she is reading a script, and her intonation is completely flat, even when she briefly talks about great or horrifying experiences. This is the beginning of what would be a great podcast but needs deeper exploration and guest interviews to help break up Dr. Kiona’s scripted and monotonous tone.

    Keep it up!!
Really amazed at the work Dr. Kiona and the production crew do to make this project happen. I personally enjoy her IG stories and travel education and wish there was more of that personality coming through in the podcast. In terms of feedback, the bells 🔔 are distracting and make the content choppy. With more of these episodes coming out, I think that can be improved.

    Love this podcast!
I have really appreciated this podcast. The episodes may be on the shorter side, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that you won’t learn anything. Jam packed with interesting stories and facts!

    Love Dr. Kiona
Her work is incredible, opening our eyes on how biased and ignorant we are when we travel. Understand what is travel privilage and how to value the people who live in the places we visit.

Everybody who travels should listen to this!
This is a really good series! I feel like I am not only learning but also the ideas that I have had for awhile are being confirmed. My hope is that others who may not be as conscious will take the time to listen in as well and become better travelers.
  • sweetcarolli
    Necessary in the Travel-Space
I look up to Dr. Kiona so much. As someone born and raised in Hawaii who now travels, it means a lot to see someone using their platform to make us think about what it means to travel consciously. Everyone should be listening to this podcast and following her social media.

    It’s ok
It’s ok, but I agree with one of the other reviews about it sounding like she’s reading out of a book or report. I do like the length of the episodes, I just think the content needs a little more work.
  • GoldenJR
    Enlightening and expanding my perspective
This podcast is awesome! In just ten minutes an episode, I’m getting nuggets of information that help me see things I never thought of regarding travel. My favorite episode is the one on managing expectations and the emphasis on how important context and cultural relativity can be. 💯💯🙌🏾🙌🏾

Dr. Kiona has created a legacy...
...both on Instagram and now with this podcast. She constantly amazes me with her research and commitment to ethical and responsible travel, inclusivity (like real inclusivity). I will never look at travel the same way.

Be/do better... BY LISTENING TO THIS
Tl;dr - Well organized and clearly presented content. Great quality. Thoroughly researched and supported material. Enjoyable to listen to. Engaging. Riveting. I’m not sure what else so can even say except I <3 this podcast? this podcast is essential listening for the intersectional traveler, the woke instagram influencer, the stay at home mom and her yoga retreats - literally everyone. I’ve been following Kiona for a long time and omg I didn’t know how much I needed this podcast despite that. For those of you who are trying to be better (just generally or in some specific way) but STILL LIVE YOUR DREAM LIFE traveling and being generally amazing like you know you are - you need to listen. I’m serious. It’s ok to be amazing and growing and this podcast will help you continue to be more amazing and grow. Covering topics like what “travel privilege” means (bet you haven’t given that a thought lately - what does privilege mean when we’re ‘en route’ or taking that beach Instagram photo on that amazing beach... or whatever) and with guests like @afrodominicanxthings, idk why you’re still reading and not listening already.

    💯
Dr. Kiona’s podcast is a must-listen, especially for white travelers who are unaware of the ways in which travel is often inaccessible for POC. Dr. Kiona presents the information in a clear, simple way while still hitting home and highlighting key points. Would highly recommend!

    Informative and Awesome!
Dr. Kiona’s IG/Paterson accounts are some of my favorites. She’s educational in a voice that resonates with myself and others. I’m thrilled to support her on this new venture. I’ve already sent her podcast to multiple people. Love that the length is concise but impactful. Thank you, Dr. Kiona!

Everyone should be listening to this
I was so excited to see that Dr. Kiona was starting a podcast! The first episode was great and the content extremely insightful, well researched, and leaves you thinking about a lot. I also love that it’s shorter than a lot of other podcasts. I can’t wait for the other episodes to drop!
