The Fountain Road Files

Introducing The Fountain Road Files, a new horror-fiction podcast from Unexplained creator Richard MacLean Smith.

In March 2020, 27-year-old Ben Williams began recording an audio diary of the growing coronavirus pandemic.

In May, he was found dead in mysterious circumstances after a series of strange goings-on in his London flat where he was spending lockdown alone, or so he thought...

    Excellent
Big fan of RMS and everything he writes…this did not disappoint! Quick listen, gave me a little PTSD 3yrs later but was worth it for the storyline!

    Disappointed
I love Unexplained. I have listened to many episodes thinking I was listening to true unexplained history. I have been riveted sometimes. The narrator is amazing in the way he can make the story so real. The Halloween episode ‘Ben Williams’ had me hanging on to every word. Can’t believe it was nothing but a farce and a lie. Shame on me for actually believing this was real. I had more respect for Richard MacLean Smith than this. Are any of these episodes true? Don’t really care, deleting this show.

    Simple But Incredibly Effective
This is another winner from Richard MacLean Smith. It’s subtle, spooky, expertly produced and wonderfully acted.

    Delightfully Chilling
I’m a huge fan of Unexplained, and was equally impressed by this podcast. It’s a creepy story with hints of social commentary, and the way it’s told lets you reach your own conclusion about what actually happened. Loved this.

Mr smith.. a wonderful surprise in ghost stories
Mr. smith I must tell you, I have listened to my fare share of mysterious podcasts and no one comes close to the quality and smoothness of your podcasts.

    Good example of pandemic life
The horror is so down played you can barely hear it but like when it happens is spooky. If nothing else it is a pretty good slice of early pandemic life

Richard Maclane Smith is all that and a bag of chips.
I have loved Unexplained since is first came out. It is the only thing that comes close to Aaron Menke’s Lore in terms of content and production. This new podcast does not disappoint! Well done and pitch perfect. I’ve also been listening to The Forrest, another Smith creation, which is also wonderful. Smith’s work is a pleasure, and he is so talented in a variety of formats. Looking forward to all the stuff to come!

    Creepy!!
More please! I jumped more than once and almost had to stop the podcast, but carried on with the help of chocolate. Great storytelling as usual.

A great show. I genuinely got the creeps. Richard is great at his work.

    Excellent
A great mini creepy series. It both documents all that we have been going through with Covid-19 and adds a great fiction-horror plot line. So well done. Hoping there is more to come!

    Wow
That was great! But please tell me that’s not The end.

    Horror in the plague time
Loved this short series of horror that takes its launch from the isolation/fear/paranoia we have all been experiencing with Covid. Of course, this is a perfect premise for a horror story – I don’t know why didn’t think that before. If you like podcasts like the black tapes, you’ll definitely like this. Otherwise, I would totally endorse everything Rnho said in his/her review. Really hope that Richard follows up on this wonderfully creative effort!

Brilliant! I’m in the US and we’re dealing with such unhinges lunacy in our Government that it is a bizarre relief? Relief is not the right word, but the feeling that this character and people across the pond are dealing with the EXACT same things! Food delivery windows, COVIDIOTS having Parties, racist relatives, a family member crammed in together, what is the most relatable is the slow realization and the mounting concerns. Then the CREEPY factor and I cannot get enough! Oh! Production value! Fantastic! Love love love!

    So fun to listen to
Dump that girlfriend before you die. BTW, did you die or just find your pet murdered? I think it was your unsupportive girlfriend. Prove me wrong!!! Keep writing this one. There is plenty more of this hellhole year to riff on! I hope there’s more. Episodes, not 2020....More conversations with crazy racist conservative dad, please! How great! So cathartic! I’ve been a long time fan of Unexplained, and loved this foray into found footage. More, please!! I’m American. I’m surrounded by lunatics. I’ll be in lockdown forever!!!!

    Love it!
Fun, gripping, and definitely relevant to the current moment. I hope the creators decide to make more horror fiction podcasts!

    Brilliant!
What a ride! But it’s too short.....can you keep it going with a new tenant?
  • LittleFox4563
    He does it again...
Richard MacLean Smith creates an amazing ride from the mundane musings of a young man to the creeping horror of a haunting-turned-murder. Outside in the sunshine of midday, I got goosebumps from the near-silent subtlety of terror; audio distortion and disruption, background creeping and emotionally evocative vocals. I highly recommend the experience this podcast provides and I dare you not to be even just a little spooked...

    A triumph
Combines lockdown and horror. So so well done, possibly the best podcast we have ever listened to. If we have time to listen to any podcast listen to this one .....just not on your own and during lockdown ! Brilliant

    Worth the hiatus
I’ve been a devoted fan of Unsolved since it’s launch, and this podcast surpassed all my expectations. Inventive “found audio” format makes this a chilling and original serial story.
  • Rtcbea
    Creepy!
It’s an amazing time capsule of lockdown, for starters. But the creeping freakiness is so well done. Really good.

Good concept that grossly misses the mark
The idea behind Fountain Road Files is excellent: Use the paranoia and anxiety of lockdown as the setting for a great ghost story. If you are looking for a paranormal drama, however, you have com to the wrong place. Disappointingly, the first hint of something supernatural occurring comes in episode five. Up to that point we get 40+ minutes of the lead's views on quarantine, the government, first responders, conspiracy theories, unemployment, recession, etc. While an accurate depiction of the first few months of COVID, I would rather this podcast offer a plot and ongoing mysteries instead of having me relive conversations that I continue to have. As a fan of Unexplained, I listened to every episode of Fountain Road, but I found it very much lacking in substance or horror. This is primarily a recreation of the early days of the pandemic that veers into the supernatural at the very end.

    Fantastic!
Richard we have missed your voice during the pandemic. This was a perfect re-entry to reclaim your place. OUTSTANDING!

    Excellent!
It’s what we’re all thinking.... like get out of my head ;)
  • pres0049
    Fantastic!
This podcast is hitting every button in my lizard brain for a drama podcast. For a “piece of daily life” podcast, or a “found footage” genre, it is truly excellent at sticking to the daily life aspect during the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Anything odd cropping up is background, and develops. Great execution so far, gleefully looking forward to more! (Plz let there b moar!)

I cannot say enough about this podcast. The story is well done and each episode draws you in wanting more. I want more!

    Fantastic
I really loved listening to this podcast (especially his convos with his dad) dealing with what we all are in this time of COVID-19. Then add the paranormal element and it’s creepy, entertaining and freaked me out. Just wish there were more episodes. Cannot wait till the next season of Unexplained

A very welcome Podcast in an uncertain time.
There have been several delays and postponements due to COVID-19, I was very glad to have found and heard this show. Would highly recommend to to anyone who loves Unexplained.

    Down On Fountain Road...
Wish I could subscribe to it TWICE... May the Fountain Road Files outlive the pandemic by 2X.... I absolutely love this kind of podcast - but they’re harder to find than unicorns.

  • Thecinimini
Liked the suspense - great story!
Couldn’t stop listening. Really caught the feel of current events and superbly rolled in the supernatural.
