Coronavirus! Climate! Brexit! Trump! Politics has never been more unpredictable, more alarming or more interesting: Talking Politics is the podcast that tries to make sense of it all. Every week David Runciman and Helen Thompson talk to the most interesting people around about the ideas and events that shape our world: from history to economics, from philosophy to fiction. What does the future hold?

Can democracy survive? How crazy will it get? This is the political conversation that matters.

Talking Politics is brought to you in partnership with the London Review of Books, Europe's leading magazine of books and ideas.

Losing an old friend have listened from the start, my Thur morning here in Pennsylvania will not be the same. Hope David continues with the “History of Ideas”. Thank you the TP Team for enhancing my world view.

    Great run
Very sorry the podcast will come to and end. Have enjoyed it immensely and appreciated broadening my perspectives while introducing the audience to sharp and thought provoking guests in addition to the host. Look forward to future endeavors from this group..

    So sad it’s ending!
I am so sad to hear that Talking Politics is ending. It’s one of the best and most insightful political shows out there, and I really appreciate it’s more global analysis. I’m immediately scrambling to find a few (and it’ll take more than one!) that might help replace it, but it will be difficult. Thank you so much, David & Helen.

    The left wing bubble.
Liberals (the American definition=progressive neo marxist liberal) All of them give off a vibe and a smell that you can detect from a mile away that becomes more definitive and offencive the closer they get.

    Wonderfully informative, a treasure!
David Runciman and his team produce a terrific podcast. Although originating in the UK it takes a thorough and eclectic view of world events and ideas to be of universal interest.

Curtis episode is a low point
Letting Curtis jam and jazz on every topic as if he knew what he was talking about is a disservice to your audience.

    Stop bringing on Gary Gerstle
He says the same things every time. Stop “checking in” with an elite university professor. Nothing changes. America is on the way to oligarchic politics, Gary? It has been there for a long time, arguably was designed that way, and you are a part of it! Please Dr. Runciman, do better when you branch out across the Atlantic.

    Great podcast
My favorite guest is Gary Gerstle.

    LOVE the show
Love the show! First UK podcast to hook me (aside from BBC Global News). The recent episode on the podcasting “revolution” was hilarious - guys, podcasting has been huge since like 2009! I’m glad it’s finally hopped the pond, though. I’m American and worked in London for the last five years. It did seem like I was bringing the good news of podcasts to our UK team in 2015, which was so strange because I’ve been obsessed since 2009. But give a Brit a podcast, and he’s hooked. This is the first strong UK politics podcast I’ve heard, and it’s true that the podcast format is best suited to politics and other serious/academic discussions. I don’t usually have the patience to listen to “funny” podcasts, and I’ve found that UK podcasting attempts have primarily been in that vein, unfortunately. The first podcast that hooked me was Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History: Ghosts of the Ostfront. Highly recommended and an excellent illustration of the power of podcasts.

I really appreciate the discussion and analysis of US history and politics from the UK POV. Also the brexit discussion/analysis is illuminating.

    Helpful
This podcast is enjoyable especially on the days when Helen is offering her opinion—rapidly. It struck me while listening to the recent “post-Covid economics” episode that she was able to articulate several points others are not willing or equipped to. There are many curiosities about the current pandemic (or “syndemic,” as the Lancet recently opined) that are hard to discuss without becoming polarized or feeling insane. Yet the discussion among Thompson, Tooze, and Runciman did address or begin to address some of these curiosities of the worldwide reaction to a disease that is simultaneously about the reaction itself. It’s a social disease, is a conclusion I drew. Anyway there is a lot to learn and enjoy in this podcast and almost all of its guests. Thanks!

How hard it is to rate a podcast (which I have listened to from its start) which began promisingly but now seems to have become uneven in its quality recently. Both Brexit politics and US history and politics are of interest to me and they dominate discussions on the podcast. The guests are superb and David is an excellent host and moderator. The problem is Helen Thompson, a fount of conventional wisdom and status-quoism. If only she wouldn’t talk so much and have an opinion on every subject.

    Never disappoints
Fantastic pod. Don’t miss the notes section either.
  • MightyBosh
    A better co-host
I like this podcast and David is excellent but as undoubtedly knowledgeable as Helen is, her style just grates with me. I often stop listening when there is extended conversations with her. Some people are just better in writing. Its a shame as its a podcast that takes its subject seriously

    Re: Judith Butler
Judith Butler isn’t sure if Biden will bring on Sanders’ team, when Joe already worked with that team to craft a platform. Can you have a guest on that is passingly politically literate informed?

Just what I need every week
This is a key piece of how I escape the bubble of U.S. political media.
  • Bob from Illinois.
I can't wait to hear Helen and David every week.
David Rinciman does a fine job of putting this podcast up but I listen for a chance to hear Helen Thompson. Together they provide a calm and very well informed discussion of current issues. I started listening to try to make sense of Brexit. Those times seem quaint and simple now. But still Helen and David along with interesting guests provide the best discussion of these issues I've found.

The best politics podcast - compulsive listening
A rare combination of coherent, intelligent and knowledgeable discussion of the issues of the day with an interviewer who has a voice I could listen to all day. Wonderful!
  • larryha61
The best thinking on politics around
David Runciman and his guests connect the politics of the moment to broader historical and philosophical trends. They manage to be very of the moment while hushing the din of daily news cycle. So much more nourishing than the fast food of daily opinion-mongers.
  • kbocek123
    Fantastically informative.
As an American, would strongly recommend to my fellow countrymen for in-depth, non US-centric perspective.

    May 27th 2020 podcast
The May 27th podcast was amazing. It was a dispassionate and knowledgeable discussion on pandemics and how they influence society. First time I heard about the near wipe out (90%) of Native Americans due to Columbus mentioned during these type of discussions.

    Hilary Mantel podcast
Possibly my favorite podcast ever. Bravo!

    Fabulous!
Bravo to David, Helen et al! Simply Fabulous - informative, educational and inspirational. Please keep on doing what you do in these extraordinary times that are uncertain and even scary! But you bring a level of clarity in discourse that is sorely missing in our current political class! Bravo again!!

    Simply the best
I've listened to a great deal of political podcasts and this is easily the best. The discussion that David and Helen lead is on a much higher level than almost anything else out there and it makes Talking Politics unique. I started listening to it in 2018 and I've since gone back any listened to almost every available episode. As far as bias goes, I'm fairly sure David and Helen don't vote Tory but, speaking as a Tory member, I never find that their discussions are objectionable.
  • DissonanceMan
    Too quiet!
Great podcast. I would like to hear more of it, although it’s nearly impossible to listen through my headphones unless I’m in a quiet place. Would love to rate this 5 stars, but please adjust levels!

    Favorite Political Podcast
Favorite political podcast and it’s not even close. Rekindled interest in British politics. David and Helen are so smart it’s scary.
  • Mukkuroni
    The best political podcast
Great analysis, great guests. Not too much name-calling of politicians by the hosts - example, “buffoon”, “emetic” etc. as on other similar podcasts.
  • g8rfan1971
    Just awful
    Partisan garbage
  • Edwile
    Very Educational
I started following few weeks ago and the quality of the guests and discussion are enriching. So far, I’ve got to say Rory Stewart is a refreshing character. 👌🏾 Come to think of it, contrary to what Britons think and when seen from the outside, I don’t think British Politics is crazy. I think the country is facing a debate over a complex question and these processes can get messy in any society. Added to the the strain Globalization puts on contemporary societies already characterized by inequalities and the anxieties coming with that . . . You got an interesting cocktail there. But I don’t think things are as bad as presented by some commentators make it appear.

    The sound of sanity
This show goes a long way to keeping me sane (though dismayed) in this increasingly dark era …
  • Decorno
More Americans should listen to this.
I started listening to understand Brexit but I’ve now made my way through most of their past episodes, too. It’s a relief to hear the calm, thoughtful analysis of Helen and David when our US alternatives are the pumped-up Maddow conspiracy train, assorted shouty cable TV shows, or Obama-bro political podcasts. The many “guides” to various political and social topics are always good. The guide to existential risk, for example, helps take our worries to the 1000-foot level, helping put other minor US scandals into perspective. Runciman’s dreamy voice is icing on the cake.

    Top of its class podcast
Indispensable as a forum for discussion of politics to an academic level and beyond.

    The best politics podcast
As an American, it can be difficult to find good sources of global political discussion. This podcast is far and away the best I’ve come across. I’ve been fully converted into a loyal listener. I couldn’t recommend it more!

    Clear-Eyed, Articulate, and Educational
I look forward to each and every podcast. This is the best podcast on politics. Some of the shows are so informed and informative that I listen to them again and again. Thank you.

    Refreshing Political Discussion
An instant American fan. Love the voices. Helen is my favorite. Love learning UK politics, UK perspective on US politics, programs on other countries’ politics. Discussions have made me rethink some of my views. Even kerfuffles are reasoned & intelligent. How refreshing!

    4 August 2019 episode
Very enjoyable podcast. The 4 August podcast was very interesting but the guest's voice was so undulating it was hard to follow. Is this a production issue or is it just down to the way your guests speak?
  • Meristor
Remarkably good podcast - even to a Yank
Talking Politics never fails to be interesting, and I hardly know anything about UK politics. I’m learning, though. In addition, David and Catherine have 2 of the most pleasant and interesting voices in podcastland. Could listen for twice as long! Keep em coming.
  • Luxcrete
    Frequently inaudible but always informative
Each episode is a wonderfully well-considered and informative discussion on the topics of the day, mercifully taking a very broad definition of the term ‘politics’. Audio levels are often a problem, but kudos to you guys for having unobtrusive ads that I’m happy to listen through instead of skipping.
  • iankizublair

Sagacious stuff. Measured, gives you room to think. The nearest podcast yet to reading Montaigne or Ralph W. Emerson.

    Outstanding
TP is an outstanding podcast. It is like spending time with sane, thoughtful, intelligent people and I really look forward to each one. It has definitely changed my views on a number of topics. One of the best podcasts / programmes / radio shows / media around.
