Behind the Bastards

12,756

There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.

Another iheart media abortion. These people don’t even pretend to approach historical people and stories (or modern and current people or stories for that matter) from an objective lens. Leftist and extremely kosher drivel.

Want a funny spin on history’s greatest monsters? You’ve found the right place!
Yes. This is a comedic but informative podcast about terrible people. It isn’t exactly great to listen to long form media about doom and gloom without injecting some comedy into it. Robert is a goofball, it helps to provide entertainment along with information. Taking these topics seriously is important, but too seriously would be detrimental to Robert and the audience. Many people also don’t seem to understand Robert is the host. Sophie is the producer and her commentary is greatly appreciated, love you Sophie! However, she isn’t the host. Robert writes fantastic scripts and reads them to his guest, Sophie, and us. Robert is more than accommodating to the guests and Sophie and genuinely values their input. As I assume many listeners do, I love when Sophie contributes to the conversation and I love her dynamic with Robert. With that said, they have limits and a script. This isn’t for the guest to ramble on, it’s for them to react and provide their view when appropriate, but ultimately for Robert to read the script he spent so much time on. Thank you Robert! I also saw some people complaining about overtalking. They do the podcast through Zoom, there’s input lag, it isn’t purposeful and it’s periodic and hardly noticeable. I delivery for work and I’m so grateful for this podcast, it really helps me get through my days. And of course they have left wing views, it’s because they know their history. You want a funny podcast about history’s greatest monsters? You’ve found the right place.

    grrrr
Yeah I agree that the people they take down need to be taken down, but the hosts are always talking over the one female and she is always the one to prompt the dudes that its time for a break. Insufferable. Got tired of hearing the hosts have a blind spot on this- like most liberal dudes, they are complete chauvinists while pretending to be liberal. Extremely unimpressed with that, and with their poor tasteless jokes and general lack of awareness. Do better. Stop being choades.

    So so
Their leftist attitudes do come through. But somewhat interesting to listen to.

Love the content, can’t stand the hosts
I really want to like the show because the topics and coverage is so interesting, but I can’t stand the hosts and their dynamic. They don’t actually seem to like talking to each other, and the constant talking over each other makes it seem like a competition. The lead guy especially seems dismissive of guests and other cohosts’ input, and their humor doesn’t click so jokes fall flat between them. The hosts don’t really make an effort to engage with guests, which makes me wonder why they bother having guests on - I only hear guest commentary if they fight to get a word in, otherwise they get talked over and ignored. I think the show has a really great foundation with the topics and research, but right now the execution and tense interpersonal dynamics make it painful to get through. I really hope they are able to cultivate a more engaging dynamic, so listeners can learn more about the actual topics they’re covering, without facing obstacles in how they’re covering them.

    Dec 3rd show
Mr. Roger’s is the Mr. Roger’s of Pittsburgh. He’s from Pittsburgh. Rick Seback is too but he is no Mr. Rogers. Signed, Pittsburgh

Fascinating subject - Everyone else(except Jamie Loftus) needs to stop talking.
Sometimes the guests are tolerable, but when Sophie stumbles into the conversation I have to fast forward - nothing against her as a person, and she seems good at her job - but she rarely if ever has anything meaningful to say and her slow breaking words tumble out at a snails pace.

    Annoying hosts
Interesting topics. Hosts are so annoying. Ramble on and on…

The host has tunnel vision and isn’t open to ideas that don’t agree with his beliefs. The Hitler episodes are good.

Listening to the RFK Jr podcast. I don’t understand the giggling and constant (forced) laughing when often the story is sad and disturbing. Please stop the giggling. It’s very disconcerting. I felt the same during the Lawrence of Arabia podcast.

    Cackling and drivel
This podcast is just a bunch of pandimensional gender studies drop outs geek laughing in an echo chamber of idle pro-communist chatter because they think they’ve figured the world out from mommy’s basement. They just prattle about which identity they’ve picked for the day and how the government is both the devil and the cure to all societies ails. While they occasionally do diligent research, the inevitably arrive at the most “spoiled child” conclusion possible. Almost 100% of the contributors are bandwagoning whatever the most progressive virtue signaling is that day and utterly refuse to use any version of critical analysis, just spew about how “queer” they are while conforming to whatever the current Portland group think is. Don’t waste your time.

    Gives three dimensions to evil
We tend to reduce people who lead others to commit terrible evil to two dimensional images. This podcast tries to give us a depiction of those people as fleshed-out three dimensional humans. In doing so, it reminds us that we are all capable of going down the wrong road. A great listen.

    Right?!?
Love the podcast but Robert, you don’t need to say “Right?” after almost Every sentence! You sound insecure which you are absolutely not. Plus it’s annoying.

Well researched but needs better editors
I listened to the RFK jr. episodes. Research is very impressive. The main podcaster, I guess Robert? is very good. His delivery is smooth and natural. But what is it with the other people? They do not contribute to the story at all, just make almost incoherent asides and interruptions. The other guy I don’t think spoke a complete sentence for all 4 episodes. Every third word he says is “like”. And the female on these episodes was even more useless. She almost did not say anything and the few remarks she made were not very related to the story at all. I think this could be a great show without the banter and two incoherent people in it. Maybe other episodes are better, but this banter was not amusing or interesting. I started fast forwarding through it and it was better. This could be such a good show but you need either a much cleverer and articulate co host or no second (or third) person.
  • E_B_SH
    Great, but a few notes
This podcast is so well researched and the figures covered are so interesting. Here are my good-hearted critiques—Robert, please stop saying ‘Right?’ after so many statements and please don’t interrupt/speak over your guests so much!!

History told by very smart and funny people
Unfortunately, this very informative show is paid for by IHeart- a purveyor of right wing misinformation. IHeart aka clear channel produce such lovelies as Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelley, Mark Levin… sorry but I can’t listen to his show. IHeart helped to elect Trump!
  • JesseBlackwood
    Left wing Partisian Hacks
Hosts have no capacity for self critique of left wing darlings like Che Guevara, Mao, any of the weather underground that terrorized America, etc. They have an axe to grind and it’s sad to see because the concept is great just poorly executed.
  • aysabell
Wanted to like this show but
It’s basically just this male podcaster interrupting and talking over or undermining his female cohost. This was extra interesting considering I was listening to the toxic masculinity episode. Bummer.

    Amazing Podcast
Robert Evans is a truly awesome podcaster. He introduces us to some many other awesome other folks that are great to listen to as well. He is so thorough and well read. Love this podcast. My dream is to be a guest on his show some day!

    Men
The episodes about the history of masculinity in the USA, OMG! What. The. —- is up with some men? I mean, some guys are SO insecure! And then, the way they treat women because of their self-perception as inadequate is insane. Y’all want to be masculine? GET OVER IT and just be. Try and find confidence in your inherent qualities, tall or not. And on that note, Robert, I love ya but could you stop talking over Sophie?

There is a problem with Utah
I think as an American living in Illinois, I’m listening to all the problems in Utah and all the cases there is a problem with Utah and it’s showing up right now with all the podcasts and everything that is going on with murder cases, rape cases quite frankly, I am sick of Mormons and their whole thingand it just doesn’t match on any level and I’m glad that it’s showing up with all these podcasts

    We don’t deserve this
I’ve never seen anybody do more work for a free podcast. The amount of research, scholarship, and analysis this guy puts into every episode is worthy of academia. He’s brilliant and gives a gift to the world twice a week. But you know…work on those pronunciations man. It’s triggering.

Liberal snobs that call farmers ignorant
I’m a liberal that is very disenfranchised by “liberals” like this. Woke liberals calling farmers ignorant. They keep talking about the facist governor as if he is a republican. There was a time when the Democratic Party sucked and it’s taken a dark turn in recent time with no one paying attention to the censorship they are involved in.

Super great history and important content
Depressing history and horrible people covered in an amusing way. History people should be listening to. Robert and his guests always work to provide correct information with humor. I don't like the episodes with Matt and his soundboard, but they are just a fraction so I just skip those and 5 stars for all the others.

    Good premise too much bias
Okay, I believe Yarvin has some dangerous ideas. However, you can make points against people you disagree with without totally distorting their positions. Either out of a lack of research, or a biased reading, you have misrepresentedCurtis Yarvin’s key ideas. I have been reading him closely for years and do not agree with much of what he says. However, I noticed that you massively misrepresented what he believes and even misrepresented what his intellectual mentors believe. This diminishes your credibility. Stick to a fair and thorough approach. I carefully reread the article from July 23, 2011. And it states the exact opposite of what you say. It is an article about how to win over and seduce the left and attacks violence explicitly. He condemns any form of violence. As an effective way of persuading anyone. Fundamentally, you have stated the exact opposite of what he says; an intentional distortion.

    Slow down sometimes
Love the show - however, as a Black American, I sometimes find there to be a bit too much laughter when talking about the history of physical and systematic violence against subjugated peoples. It seems more humor points than historical ones, where the lives mentioned are brought up to get laughs (by white people) rather than educate them on history they can presently, potentially contribute toward the perpetuation of (speaking of white supremacy)

The right wingers complaining in the reviews section are wrong per usual, this is a great show

    Good premise, bad hosts
The idea of this show is phenomenal. But it’s ruined by the constant political ideology by the hosts, particularly left-leaning ideology. That with the pretentiousness of how they incorporate their ideologies makes the podcast unlistenable. Remove the politics and I’ll be back.

    Only One Issue
The concept is great, the host is great and the show is great. The only problem is that the guests are hit or miss and can really wreck an episode. Some of the guests feel the need to insert their jokes at every turn which can be unnecessary and some just constantly go off on tangents making it hard for the host to stay on topic. Prop completely derails the flow of the show. It’s incredibly hard to listen when he goes off on some half thought out sidetrack. The second I heard Prop’s voice on the new episode I had to skip. Just terrible
  • CarDriver4238
    Great show.
Robert is a great host and very funny. Prop and Jamie Loftus are the best guest hosts. They having amazing chemistry with Robert. The only drawback to the show is Sophie, who is the antithesis of fun and the human equivalent of a wet blanket. Can we have 100% less of Sophie?
  • keikokomikokoi
Wow, what a naive simplistic condescending bunch
Feels like a teacher and children talking around in a circle in the classroom, all trying to be polite, and laugh at everybody’s bad jokes. No critical thinking skills. What so ever. Like, literally zero.

    Delightfully disturbing
As an American expat, Robert’s sense of humor is a source of tremendous glee. The ripest sort of education—and where are the baddies came from is crucially relevant to being a responsible citizen. The only thing I don’t like about this podcast is Sophie’s commentary, which always lowers the level of the discourse.

    PRONUNCIATION KEY
Please double check pronunciations of names and towns. It’s more professional and very IMPORTANT to get it correct when trying to explain/teach history to people. Im on the verge of not being able to listen anymore because it’s so annoying

Well worth the time to listen
This is one of the best podcasts out there. I’ve listened to several episodes now and am hooked. I just finished part 2 of Curtis Yarvin — very timely.
