Story Break

Story Break is a weekly podcast from RocketJump where we (Will Campos, Matt Arnold, and Freddie Wong) sit down in the RocketJump writer's room and attempt to "break" a story for a ridiculous concept, property, or idea that we in NO way have any rights to. Join us every week as we attempt to tackle everything from beloved video games to billion dollar franchises!

A roller coaster of a podcast
You will laugh. You will cry. You will cringe. You will get mad. You will be utterly confused, and you’ll wish that a lot of these were real movies. I’m certainly crossing my fingers for Heaven Heist and Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road.

    Creative and Fun
Storybreak is absolutely delightful! I enjoy listening to the guys spin these individual threads of story until they turn into some kind of cohesive tapestry. The stories are always entertaining, and the guys are very amusing! I’m smiling or laughing my way through my work day right now due to this podcast. I wish I was in a writers room instead! Well done!

    No complaints
Great podcast I love getting a peek into what a writing room would be like. And they made jar jar a likeable character

Lol this review is random and specific
I just listened to disaster jocks and if the earth stopped rotating everyone would be killed by a 10,000mph global windstorm

    Depressing
A hard podcast to listen to because it’s three guys with an incredible comprehension of narrative building out solid concepts who gradually bemoan with greater and greater frequency that they aren’t Hollywood professionals post VGHS, despite having achieved greater success and recognition than most of us ever have or could. If you want to listen to a well constructed podcast by three genuinely funny and brilliant people, this is for you, but know that despite their incredible talent they don’t become Hollywood megaliths and have to instead SOMEHOW settle for having achieved great success with other things they’ve worked on and their highly praised D&D podcast.

    Absolutely Fantastic
I love this podcast. Though it’s not something that the story boys do anymore, their dynamic and chemistry always makes it an absolute treat to listen to. I still love to go back and enjoy it when I’m working or doing something mundane and want something to listen to. Also, even with all of their other content for D&Dads, no Mandela effect that they’ve brought up will ever appear as clearly in my mind as Mario in a bath towel.

ITS BACK FOR A SPECIAL EPISODE
Time to relisten to the jar jar binks episodes for the third time Edit: can’t believe I hadn’t tried heaven heist! Thank you so much for the meatball boys!

    Late To The Party
I found this podcast through dungeons and daddies and was so sad to find out it had ended. :( Hope you guys come back for a christmas episode! EDIT PLEASE DO A BETTY WHITE BIOPIC

    Dystopian Dragontales
I absolutely loved this whole podcast (and have moved over to Dungeons and Daddies because I’ve grown so attached to everyone). I wish this was still going because I’ve been trying to pitch a spin off of Dragontales to anyone who will listen. The kids go back to the world, it’s been destroyed because they stopped visiting. Rated R. All that jazz. I’d love creative minds like FW to put something like this into the world.

    Basically perfect
Got me into filmmaking. I hope the story boys come back to it every once in a while.

    Great show
Episode one, Link wants to get into the sacred temple because he can find a nap spot where nobody will look or bother him. Have him being antagonized for being a lazy bum and that drives him to look for somewhere he won’t be bothered. He finds the sword and binds to it while he’s curiously picking it up. The village leaders throw him out in a rage and he doesn’t have anywhere to go, so he goes with Zelda because he has nowhere else to go. When he sees the outside world is having difficulty he then finds the motivation to continue on because he realizes the problems will eventually reach and destroy his village where his family lives.

Getting me out of writers block
Like most people, i came here from dungeons and daddies. Didn’t think I’d find a new favorite podcast, but here we are! On top of that, the FIRST episode was about my favorite franchise, legend of Zelda! This show has me motivated to get out of my writing slump and keep being creative. Thanks for being the best guys! (And let me know if you want an intern!)

I was hooked from the beginning
I started this show after speedrunning DnDaddies because I wanted to understand the daddy gang’s writing style in a more open and “structure-less” environment. Each episode y’all knock it out of the park. This podcast style is a perfect way to facilitate growth in a creative manner and I was glad to hear it being done!

    Press F to pay respects
One of the most unique, hilarious podcast ideas I’ve heard. Wish they could pass it on to guest trios since it’s such a awesome premise. Miss you fellas!

    Absolutely amazing
This is easily the best podcast I've ever heard. A hilarious, incredible dive into the creative process. My only regret is that I will someday run out of episodes to listen to.

The last break was my heart
Like many others, I found this gem through Dungeons and daddies. This harrowing look into the primordial soup of creativity is such a refreshing experience. I truly felt like one of the bois and would shout in both exaltation and frustration as if they could respond. My one wish for the Honda-days would be the return of this hour of fellowship and fun, to offer respite in the dark winter hours

    Galaxy Trucker
I know I’m a little late to Story Break, but that doesn’t make it any less valid. Galaxy Trucker is my favorite episode so far, thoroughly enjoyed it. They did such a great job, I had to go and find Galaxy Trucker so I could try it out myself. A++

    Just a good time
Sad to say goodbye to this podcast that has been a constant source of laughter and good vibes for the last 4 years. Thank you Matt, Freddy, and Will for all that you do and I hope story break will get resurrected from time to time in the future. Good luck with your movie!!!

    So much fun!
It’s been a good time, and thank you so much for this podcast! It’s one of my favorites. To anyone reading, I can’t recommend this show enough. Sad that it’s over, but so glad it existed.

(New Footnote Added)- I Mean Dang
It’s genuinely brilliant, in-depth, creative, INCLUSIVE, and unique- all while being really hecking hilarious. Each episode is an entirely new rollercoaster, my friends. Not one is like another. If you’re interested in writing and production, this is still an excellent podcast for you. I know it says comedy, but Matt, Will, and Freddy tackle each topic with sweat on their brows, and they weave some pretty dang phenomenal tales. Oh, and the three of their fun-loving, vaguely cynical, expressive personalities in one room? The cherry on top. (Also listen to their other (DnD) podcast with fellow hosts Beth May and Anthony Burch, “Dungeons and Daddies,” and combined with this podcast you will be stocked up on distracted happiness for a while.) ** Edit, years later. 2nd review for the 2nd podcast I ever listened to. I’m heartbroken that it’s over, not only because it’s a goodbye to Story Break, but because it’s a goodbye to Matt, Freddie, and Will. Except for the occasional other podcast, we’ll never be “in the same room with them” again. Not in this way. I wish them all the best. Good luck, guys, in your careers- although you obviously don’t need it.

    Story Break is Amazing
This show and it’s hosts Will, Matt, and Freddy are hilarious and extremely heartwarming would probably be the first podcast I’d recommend if someone asked me to. Even though this podcast is ending I know that it’ll never be gone because even before it was ending I already constantly relistened to almost every episode. At this rate I’ll know every episode by heart in like 2 years. Whenever I want to listen to a random podcast that’s not part of a bigger journey or story 60% of the time (and I say 60 because the other 40 is MBMBAM) I put on one of these episodes. And even if you did want a podcast that is part of a bigger story they have you covered with Heaven Heist and Jar Jar. The point is that this podcast is amazing and I want the story boys to know that even if they never make a hit blockbuster, that they succeeded in making a beautiful piece of art already. Thank you guys for the years already and the many years to come of hilarity, happiness, and at the very least white noise, that you guys provided me and I hope to watch one of your movies on the big screen someday.(Hopefully it’s why the chicken crossed the road) P.S. I’m still holding out hope that there might be new episodes every once in a while though. Love you guys

    Only 4 weeks left
Rip the story boys in me ears, soon I shall see them on the silver screen. It’s been a incredible run, and ever since discovering your shorts and full length shows from rocket jump, and I’ll miss your sweet sweet noise.

    Absolutely Love!
I love listening to these stores- I wish they would be made into real movies! As a writer, I definitely wish I was able to participate in the conversation sometimes!!

    This is great!
I can't believe I didn't listen to this sooner. I found this after catching up fully on dungeons and daddies and wanted more of this goofy group. Low key very good stories they craft! Highly recommend!

    Love the Energy
I’m slowly making my way through the back catalog and love what I’ve heard so far! The hosts have great energy and charisma that mesh well together. There is no condescension between them, and they are willing to listen to each other’s ideas, no matter how crazy some of them may be. I have skipped a few episodes that have since been made into movies that I didn’t want to mess up how the story played out in my mind with the “writer’s room” version. Keep on making great content, I look forward to listening to many many more amazing episodes.

    Uniquely inclusive sometimes
It’s nice to see a group of writers who are funny and respectful of lgbt folks from the Bowsette movie to the prom movie, they handle things well and I’m happy to say I’m allways ready for a new episode to laugh at and relax.

    Hilarious and (sometimes) genius
The hosts are all fantastic. The full length movie writes are my favorite. Heaven Heist was a blast. And somehow, impossibly, surreally: Jar Jar is even better.
  • good guy... definitely
    New listener loving it
Interesting idea for a podcast, just a bit slow at times but perfect to listen to in the background EDIT: never mind they are wonderful, the jar-jar script is making me actually sad in the best way

    Took a Second
As a script writer for a fiction podcast, I knew it was going to take a second for me to appreciate this show, but the concept is invaluable. Taking a rough idea, making it worse, and at the end of it, somehow creating a fantastic pitch for something I’d genuinely enjoy, given opportunity to watch. I am a new convert to the show, and these guys are fun to listen to. Give it half an episode, and the entertainment will pay dividends. Keep up the great work!

    Obsessed
I’d been listening on and off for many years now but the scene for Heaven Heist & the Jar-Jar movie have made this priority listening for me.

    Thanks you!!!
I’ve been listening to episodes on repeat since late 2019. No joke, You guys helped me through 2020. My favorite episode is, without a doubt, The Boys are Back In Town.

    Love These Guys
I am obsessed. I’ve been working my through the heaven heist script listening to a podcast a day and it is amazing. First found out about you through the Dungeons and Daddies podcast, which was recommenced by a friend. It’s up there on my top five life changing experiences. I don’t think any podcast comes close to the banter and wit you guys bring. Please never stop creating content. Even the ads are worth listening too!

    Gets my juices flowing!
My creative juices, that is. There’s nothing I love more than hearing Will yell out, “Oh, oh, oh, oh, I got it!” followed by Matt saying, “Yeah,” repeatedly while listening to Will with Freddie laughing maniacally in the background. In all seriousness, this is a wonderful podcast hosted by some awesome dudes. Keep up the good work fellas!

Crackin open a story with the boys
Every episode makes me feel like I’m just hanging out with the boys and screwin around talking about movies and games and whatever else This is the podcast that inspired me to start recording my own! Keep it up boys! ✨ Kathleen bless 🙏🏼✨

Makes me want to not only write, but scream at my phone
This podcast has been quite the inspiration. It makes me want to write and explore the creativity of stories. I love how they work together, flow their stories, and build off of one another. I would love to guest on this podcast, that is the kind of energy that they give off. It really opens a door into creativity, and helps to explore what it is to be a writer of screen. Thank you for sharing these insights, and if you ever need a guest, I volunteer as tribute!

    Three great story boys
This podcast is a treat. The boys have great chemistry that leads to fun banter, and a fluid writing/breaking process. It’s also a really interesting insight into storytelling and screenplay writing, and also great inspiration for creative brainstorming. It’s fun to be along for the ride through the whole process, and more often than not, they stick the landing and make a really fun story at the end. While not *every* story they break is a banger, every single episode is. If you’re interested in listening to creative people do creative writing in real time - definitely give this podcast a shot!
  • Mariorox1956
Creative, goofy and informative. The real triple threat.
I'm a recent fan of these wonderful story boys and their equally wonderful ideas. They find ways to make topics so simple or mundane into captivating, imaginative stories in just an hour. I find it fascinating to see the bite-sized process of how a story is formed through the minds of the self-proclaimed Hollywood professionals. The show is also entertaining with how the boys are constantly making jokes and always trying to one-up the previous goofy idea with an even more ludicrous idea. All the cohosts have perfect chemistry with each other, each offering unique perspective on breaking down a story, refining it to the best it can be. If you have any interest in the creative process behind writing movies, the imaginative spins on ideas you never thought possible, or just enjoy the chaos of three like-minded folks making jokes about popular culture, I would highly recommend Story Break.

    Great Fun (and learning!)
I’m an animator-turned-screenwriter and I have been wanting to get more data points on how other people tackle the story process. This podcast is *great* for that!! It’s the prefect level of funny and informational, like soaking up knowledge from your smart friends at a party. Huge backlog, too! (I’m only at Teen Bond and I’m so excited to keep going.) Awesome podcast, keep up the good work!!

Giving Jar Jar a Second Chance
I hated Jar Jar before these guys got ahold of him. Can’t wait to see how it turns out and I would definitely pay money to see this movie! I love when they’re throwing ideas against the wall to see what sticks even though they spend a significant amount of time nowhere near the rails. It all comes together by the end of the episode, though. Great work!
  • Scurvytoes
    A fun, engaging time
This is a great, creative and fun podcast. I have to listen to it with my AirPods, because my partner can’t tolerate all the “yelling and cross talk”. For me, while it can be a little frustrating at times and I wouldn’t mind a little less of it, it just wouldn’t have that fun writers’ room feel without some shouting and cross/over talking. I really love when they do deep dives on a single script every show, like “Heaven Heist” and “Jar Jar: a Star Wars story”. I enjoy the juxtaposition of these long form arcs with the one shot story breaks they are the bread and butter of the show. Thanks, Gents!

Chain gang attempting a prison break
The story writing equivalent of a chain gang attempting a prison break every week: mostly successful, frequently hilarious, always sounds like fun. The three hosts balance each other so nicely or, when they don’t, one will fully yank the others into entertaining directions that I certainly don’t mind re-listening to when I need cheering up. 👌🏽💯
  • FretfulSumo
    Yes
I was down enough to listen to every episode, then Will made an iRobot reference and I decided to become a Story Break stan.

    Fun and Inspiring
A great listen that has made me revisit the way I look at stories and writing. All 3 hosts are hilarious and sharp. The only problem is I listen to too many episodes a day, and I fear I will run out too quickly. PS: When y’all are finished with the Jar Jar Binks story (going great), you should tackle the ‘Ology book series (Dragonology, Wizardology, etc). I grew up reading them, and I think there’s a lot of fun lore to break and explore.
