Nixon at War

Most accounts of the collapse of Richard Nixon’s presidency begin with Watergate — the now iconic tale of a bungled break-in and the misbegotten cover-up that followed.  But what led to Watergate?  How — and more puzzlingly, why — did one of the shrewdest, most gifted political figures of his time become embroiled in so manifestly lunatic an enterprise in the first place?  Intrigued by that question, writer/journalist Kurt Andersen takes a deep dive into the vast archives at the Nixon Library and emerges with an answer he wasn’t expecting: While Watergate doubtless accelerated Nixon’s spectacular fall, it was the Vietnam War that led inexorably to the break-in, and from there to the sinking of his presidency.

For Andersen, who came of age in the Vietnam era, that answer in turn begs another, larger question: How did Richard Nixon, with all his foreign policy savvy, allow himself to get trapped in the same quagmire he had watched engulf his predecessor, Lyndon Johnson? These questions are the central concerns of Nixon at War.  Over the course of seven episodes, Andersen peels back the onion and emerges with a new and deeper understanding of both the man and the war, and of the complex linkage between them.

    Excellent pod
Right up their with Bag Man. What a corrupt team they were. Gives you a good idea of what has happened to the Republicans more recently. Nixon really was a paranoid man. More like this please.

    Superb
Fascinating, insightful, well written and reported. I was active in politics when Nixon was president and living in Washington when he was impeached, but there was much in this podcast I didn’t know.

    Authentic & Raw
A good friend who enjoys this era and others in American history recommended. I loved it. I’m a Nixon/Watergate buff, and thought I’d heard it all. The Cambodia thing is tragic. Nixon was more deeply flawed than I realized. But, what a great story. Your scripting, guests, production quality, interweaving of old audio tapes — excellent. Thanks for making the effort to do it. Kudos to your team. David Botkins - Richmond, VA

I lived through this, but I didn’t know the half of it
This riveting and important series doesn’t just revisit Nixon’s Vietnam record; it fill in blanks that we (I) never realized were there. Now it all makes more sense. And it’s even more horrible than it seemed at the time.

    Important history, well told
All-around beautifully constructed and researched series, revealing facts I’d never heard before about the presidencies of Johnson and Nixon, and their impact on modern America and the world. Told in a thoroughly compelling manner! Highly recommend!

    Great perspective
I enjoyed listening To this condensed perspective of the events occurring between 1968 and 1973.

Wonderful telling of a horrible story
Like other kids who grew up in the 70s I knew about Watergate and Vietnam but had no idea how closely they were connected. It’s astonishing how much Nixon got away with, the things that he thought he was entitled to get away with. It’s also depressing how he set the stage for our 45th president

    One of the best pods
Nixon told far more lies- & got away with them for decades - than most of us knew. Nixon promised peace in Vietnam to get elected in 1968. He denied contacting the South Vietnamese government, through Anna Chennault with the goal of torpedoing the Paris peace talks in 1968. Nixon lied. So did Henry Kissinger.

so irritating. omg y Y are republicans such dirty politicians. always have to cheat to win. omg just like w trump nixon doesn’t pay the price for treason and neither is/will trump. why was lbj so gullible about nixon? i was surprised by that. these podcasts should be used in hs history classes though i am sure the right would make a big stink about it because they can’t handle the truth. thank u for these!

    LBJ / Nixons war
LBJ / Nixons war. Just the BEST thing Ive listened too in ages..To hear those voices, what lessons there are here!!! Thanks so much.. The phone recordings are priceless.. these podcasts help put everything in perspective. The LBJ episodes are really the best… In my opinion, because people forget what he did and how he did it, because the Vietnam war totally blew him out of the water. And he knew it. Thank you so much for putting this together.

    Engrossing.
In a world of conspiracy theories and downright lying, Nixon stood head and shoulders above the rest. He could’ve taught the recent bumbling idiot a thing or two. As a 70s college student and amateur historian, my hope has always been that there would not be a whitewash of the Nixon years, that we would not forget what this self centered, insecure, power-hungry man tried to do. This podcast has been satisfying for me; it’s fascinating and historically important. Fabulous work.

    Mt. Rushmore next to Lincoln
Flawed, human, like you and me— A great man whose heart betrayed him, that same heart of a poor boy who became a champion of the poor, planting his stamp upon that extremely insufficient part of our national soul that seeks true justice. This podcast is remarkably well done. Everyone should not just listen to it, but study it. The actual voices of that momentous era are weaved expertly into the narrative, placing us in the rooms where history was made. Thanks for this masterpiece!

    We need an LBJ now.
Picked this up as it was recommended on another podcast (Slate’s The Gabfest) during their chatter section. I’ve always been intrigued by LBJ mainly because he audio recorded everything and you get to hear his thoughts in his own words. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but he could get things done. This podcast serves as a reminder of the good things he was able to do and that he was a Progressive in a time of turmoil. We need leadership like his right now.

    LBJ restored
We forget the revolutionary things that LBJ did for the good of American society and how much government can do to better lives particularly when there is dialogue between the parties. We are reminded of that in this podcast which features wonderful source material from the people who made it happen, usually with Lyndon twisting their arm.

    Fantastic Podcast!
An excellent podcast that balances a compelling and well-written narrative with a wealth of actual archival audio clips from the period. Would highly recommend.

    All Presidential candidates should listen!
I shouldn’t have listened to this before bed because I am wildly energized for the first time in these dark days. I wish all candidates and voters would listen to this as a reminder of what government, what people can do to build a great society.

    Flawed-Great Man
The more I learn about LBJ, the less passionate I become of JFK. I feel like Kennedy was the man we all wanted. Lyndon Johnson was the man we needed. I’m very sorry Vietnam. I hope we forever look back on the war in Southeast Asia and always learn from what happened there. In saying that, I admire LBJ. Thank you for bringing back this podcast. I love it.

    Brilliant, Powerful Podcast
This is an outstanding podcast. The tragic tale of LBJ & Vietnam has oft been told, but seldom better or more movingly. The program is not comprehensive but uses powerful & historical episodes to paint a compelling picture. It makes masterful use of period recordings, later interviews & scholarly commentary. The music wonderfully, even hauntingly, complements the substance. Highly recommend.

    Excellent insight
The interviews, recorded phone conversations and selections of hearings presented in LBJ’s War provide listeners with a comprehensive look at the timeline of LBJ’s Vietnam.

    Excellent.
I was a kid during the years covered on this history, and was only marginally aware of what was happening, even though I came from a family that was reasonably politically involved. Fascinating to being able to understand the context and backstories behind the headlines. Concise and well-written, an outstanding primer for one of the great tragic political actors of the 20th century. Makes me want to delve more into LBJ as a morally flawed and complex character.

    Interesting, Enlightening, Compelling
I was so captivated I listened to the whole series this morning. Just fantastic!! I highly recommend, it’s an unbiased and enlightening look at what happened. It’s also a relevant story for today that we must keep in mind as we consider our role in other nations politics.

    Great work!
This is one of her best historical productions about Vietnam I’ve watched/listened to. By focusing on the war through the lens of Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, PRI tells the history in a unique an accurate way.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
    - George Santayana We are in deep doodoo right now. So much of what is discussed here, we are living again. I lived and grew up through all of this and remember much of it vividely. This podcast series presents history in fantastic detail with lessons we can easily apply today.

    History lives
This is a fabulous piece of historic journalism, well told through an abundance of archives. If you like this, then listen to the podcast “Slow Burn” about the fall of Nixon by the Washington Post.

    LBJ’s War
It really intrigued me when I saw this title. Once I began to listen to it I was brought to tears. To once again relive this era of my life was an emotional roller coaster. I listened to some of these very speeches when in high school and did social studies reports in 1964-67 but without the background that these podcasts provide. Although there is probably some bias in this production it still provides more information than we ever received in the sixties. Then to be drafted to fight in such a confusing situation caused myself and others from my generation to be torn in ways that were not healthy in the least. Looking at today’s world I wonder if we, as a society, have learned anything about the value of true transparency and the necessity of being honest with ourselves and each other.

    LBJ's Own Words
A great resource that includes many primary source auditory materials from LBJ. A great companion to Vietnam War from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick and the equally great podcast, American War, that discusses the decisions in producing the Vietnam War mini-series. The recordings neatly underline the American arrogance that allowed us to believe that our military superiority will defeat any lessor equipped foe.
