Improv #25

An improvised satire from the staff of a fictional mega church.Mega is a critically acclaimed podcast that hilariously satirizes contemporary megachurches and their associated evangelical subculture. Hosted by Holly Laurent and Greg Hess, this show offers a unique take on American religious culture through a range of comedic characters and segments. It was named "Best Satire" by Vulture. One of the most exciting aspects of Mega is its guest interviews, which feature a variety of comedians, actors, and thinkers such as Louie Anderson, Lauren Lapkus, Duncan Trussell, Jason Mantzoukas, Paul Scheer, Lisa Gilroy, Scott Aukerman, Tom Papa, Jen Hatmaker, Adal Rifai, and more. These guests bring their own comedic styles and perspectives to the show, creating memorable moments that keep fans coming back for more.In addition to its guest interviews, Mega is also known for its signature episodes featuring Holly Laurent playing Day Labont, a skeptical teenager who brings on guests like his atheist thinker friend Hemant Mehta. The show's humor and tone have been compared to the mockumentary style of Christopher Guest's films and the dry humor of The Office or Parks and Rec, making it a must-listen for fans of these genres.Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, Mega is a podcast that offers something for everyone. Its witty improvisation, spot-on parodies, and sharp commentary satirizing contemporary religion and politics make it one of the most entertaining and thought-provoking shows available today. Join the Mega congregation and tune in for hilarious insights on the world of megachurches and evangelical Christianity.

paid for premium, but getting ads after update
MEGA is my favorite podcast, particularly at this time in the world where news is grim and we are more stressed out and on edge. Smart and hilarious. I love them so much that I paid for Premium ad-free for a year. Suddenly though--the ads are back. I recently updated the iphone and wondered if that's the reason. I don't know how to figure this out.

Thank you for making this show!!
This podcast is so funny but it also has been a really helpful place for me to examine my own past growing up with the church. It’s been really eye opening in a way I did not expect and I’ll be honest, there’s moments that I realize OH that’s where that anxiety comes from! I recommend it to almost everyone I know in person and definitely recommend it to all internet strangers.

This Podcast is a Treat and a Treasure
Great Podcast! Brings a hometown feel with its Big City Professional Hosts. Listen to the one host navigate hemorrhoids, latently suppressed carnal desires, and indoctrinated willful cluelessness as she brings Greg to Climax. Good job. Clever and funny

    Obsessed.
I only found this podcast a few months ago and I am less already up to September of last year’s episodes. I have absolutely loved everything about this show, and have never laughed out loud so frequently from a podcast. Holly and Greg are two of the most hilarious people I’ve ever listened to.

This is SUCH a good show
The best satire rings true. This is brilliant, funny, and now and then shows compassion toward the same people they’re mocking. Pitch perfect.

They are doing the lord’s work
I was lost and then I found this podcast. They are some of the funniest creators ever to grace my ears and the improv is impeccable!

Wildly creative. The episode “A Christian Carol” has me wide-mouthed for 12 minutes already!! Love the humor.

    Laugh out loud funny!!!
This is easily one of my top 3 podcasts!!! They are incredibly funny in their church satire— strikes SO many chords from my past-evangelical lifestyle. Freaking hilarious! Just give it a listen and you’ll be hooked too.
  • McMillzz
VERY FUNNY with normal amount of ads.
This show has as many ads as any other podcast! It’s also hilarious. Highly recommend their Patreon too. FIVE STARS.

Forever grateful to the friend who recommended Mega! Somehow hilarious, goofy, and poignant all at the same time!

Hooked on The Rise and Fall of Twin Hills
Love the podcast. Confusing and hard to find in the long list of episodes - wish it there was another view with the episodes in folders by titles/seasons. For some reason Apple Podcasts only brings up the highlight episode on It’s A Wonderful Lie. Shoutout to them for getting me here though! Hilarious amazing content that while outrageous it doesn’t feel totally outside the realm of possibility.

    Funny Satire
I really enjoy this podcast. The “rise and fall of twin hills” episodes were pretty over the top for me, but the regular episodes are fun. I especially enjoyed the interview with Brian McLaren.

    Fundamentalist Nonsense Laid Bare
I didn’t grow up in a nonsensical church, but I have had nonsensical Christian beliefs shoved down my throat all my life. Mega hits the nail on the head and let’s me laugh at fundamentalist nonsense instead of getting angry.

    Always evolving!
This podcast has been a favorite of mine for years as I am an Exvangelical who grew up in a home & church just like Holly’s, right across the state line in Illinois…It is now my favorite podcast, as in the last few months they have tried some new things such as interviewing “real” people like Brian McLaran and Bart Campolo while staying in character, Mockumentaries about Pastor Steve, as well as getting Day more involved in the show. These recent “change in format” podcasts have taken the show to a whole new level and I continue to look forward to listening biweekly. They have captured the essence of the evangelical church with all of its contradictions, hypocrisy, fear mongering, etc, while helping the secular world to see, in an hilarious style , that many of these folks (leaders and flock) are also victims of this control system. Best of all, this podcast has helped me to heal.
  • ChrisR1124
    Hilarious!
Original, funny, clever, entertaining. I look forward to the new episodes every week!

    Truly Perfect
I grew up as a pastor’s kid in Indiana and have previously worked at a mega church so this podcast is my niche. The comedy is gold and listening instantly puts me in a better mood. Thank you for this treasure!
  • PeteyPete123
    Comedic genius!
I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time. This is funny, witty and healing for those of us who have survived high demand religious experiences. This satire exposes the absurd black and white thinking and mental gymnastics that come from white evangelicalism.
  • J4m3sV
    Excellent!
I just found this podcast. Freaking hilarious…especially as an ex Christian. I love it when improv podcast are actually funny.

Refiner’s Fire, My Heart’s One Desire
Some of these episodes are GOLD! And some are duds. Strikes and gutters, man! Regardless. The best episode is Episode 2, with that amazing gal from SNL. I never went to a megachurch but was raised Assemblies of God in the 80’s and 90’s, same age as Halley and Gray no doubt. Halley is my favorite, everything she says is precious and insightful!!! This show is probably most fun for ex-church folks but could work for anyone with a sense of humor. It’s all covered in the blood. KEEP ROCKIN 4 JESUS!
  • Senorborritoslover
A must listen after leaving Christianity
I found this podcast after Holly's interview on Andrew Gold’s podcast. I was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and find this podcast resonates deeply. It makes me laugh while helping me deconstruct some of the toxic beliefs I was raised with. Thank you so much for this podcast! You’re truly doing the lord’s work 😉
  • Emmkitkat
    Will never stop listening
I cannot recommend this podcast enough!! Ever since I started listening, I keep working my way through the whole catalogue again and again. The improv is hysterical and I always notice new lines or jokes when I re-listen. The religious commentary is nuanced and so on point - every single exvangelical out there would defintiely love this podcast! It’s incredible to listen to something so healing AND so hilarious. Thank you Holly and Greg for creating something so wonderful!! PLEASE never stop making more. PS. Day for President!
  • Tdstash
So, so purely funny, ESPECIALLY if you grew up in church
Just hilarious - the comedy and jokes are SO specific and such deep references about the church.

    The show I didn’t know I needed!
Your pod was recommended by another podcast I love, Wife of Crime. They said we should give it a listen especially if you grew up in the church. It’s hilarious 🙌🏻

If they didn’t have the disclaimer at the front about being a satire, you wouldn’t know. Ring so true
  • fowstus
    Perfect Mix
It’s reaching onion level of satire accuracy. Just tipping the reality to higher levels. If I didn’t know it wasn’t satire/comedy I would question if it was an actual Christian show.
  • Lazerwolf07
    Fun and Enjoyable
Improv is usually a coin toss of funny luck as to whether I am chuckling or zoning out into unimaginative ways to mow my lawn next week. Thankfully this podcast has some very talented folks that steer the dialogue into unpredictable dialogue and catchphrases that keep me smiling and sharing it with others I feel will feel right at home at Twin Hills. I hope you find it fun and enjoyable too.

So much potential, but need better guests
Let me start off by saying…I have listened to every single episode. Every. Single. Episode. I also grew up deeply Evangelical, so it feels like this podcast was made for me. I absolutely love the idea of this show. And when it’s good, it’s *SO GOOD.* A handful of guests are absolute fire, and no amount of listening on repeat gets old. The co-hosts are so incredibly talented! I really only have one critique, but unfortunately it’s a pretty huge critique: a lot of the guests simply are not funny. I don’t mean, they drop a line or two that doesn’t land. I mean that they can’t seem to ever pick it up to begin with. I mean that their satire is uncreative, the chemistry is lacking, and the show never gets off the ground at all. Poor Holly & Greg have to work overtime to try to resuscitate the show. If it were just a guest here or there like this, that would be one thing. But in my opinion, it’s an unacceptable number of guests. Holly & Greg are so talented; they just need to hone their radar. I will continue listening each week, because as I said before, when it’s good it’s amazing. I am hopeful that as they continually improve and find their footing, the episodes will get consistently funnier. I want this podcast to succeed! Good luck, and thanks for bringing some laughter to this area of life. ☺️

    Cannot stop laughing
I was raised in an atheist home in the Deep South, and this is so hilariously spot on to what I saw around me growing up. I love it!

    Love it!
As someone who grew up inside of the Evangelical world and has gone through deconstruction and kissed that world goodbye this podcast makes me giggle and not alone in the journey.

My only break from a steady diet of true crime
It’s true. I listen almost exclusively to true crime but make an exception for this podcast. It is such a palate cleanser! So funny, and has the actual pulse of US conservative mega churches. I have shared it with many, and even created “best of” lists for each of the different years they’ve been making shows to get my friends started. ☺️
  • FuquaHunter
    Hilarious
I love the comedy, but this show has been a bit of a life preserver. It’s gotten me to expand my reading list (mega mini), opened me to new ideas and got me into therapy. I’d have to say I’m feeling too blessed to be stressed.
