ENGL 205: World Literature I

28

This is a course in World Literature, in which we will read texts from many cultures and many eras: Sumerian, Babylonian, Greek, Roman, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, British, French, Spanish, Italian, and Native American texts that range from about 2500 B.C. (the earliest date of the Gilgamesh epic) to the late 17th century—over 4000 years! The readings in this course span many genres, including epic and lyric poetry, drama, fiction, and the essay, and one of our goals is to read the texts in the context of the cultures that produced them, so far as we are able.

These audio podcasts have been produced to reinforce and supplement the course instructor notes, promote class discussion, and facilitate a deeper understanding of the course’s texts.
