Autism Program at BMCWow, learned so much! Before listening to this episode, I had never really thought about the benefits or drawbacks that technology and media use can have on children with autism. After listening to Dr. Radesky’s interview I realized the importance of parents’ presence and engagement in their children’s technology and social media use. Dr. Radesky highights that although one’s relationship with his or her social media is very much a personal, solitary experience, parents should motivate their children to share their experiences with them to ensure that their children are having a positive, safe experience on media. For this to work, it is ideal for the parents to be a part of their children’s media experience from the first time they get on it. By having this interactive, open experience be the norm, children will be able to feel comfortable seeking advice and guidance from their parents when needed. I thought it was fascinating that potentially harmful aspects of media, such as getting attached to a game or having an unpleasant conversation over social media, could be positive learning experiences for children with autism with their parents’ involvement and guidance along the way. This podcast was very informative and easy to listen to!
