This Particular Album is Very, Very Important to Me

81

Does music make you feel things? Like, anything at all? If not, you might be a sociopath! If so, this might be the podcast for you! Join hosts Joel Spence and Deborah Tarica each week as they invite someone they think is very very fantastic, to pick an album that is very very important to them. Together, they listen to that album and go back in time to understand what it means to that particular guest and how it helped make them who they are today.

    Fantastic podcast!
As a music nerd, I love how deep and emotional the guests get with these albums! The hosts are extremely funny and engaging. I discovered this podcast a year ago and it’s definitely one of the things that got me through the pandemic. 5 Stars!!!

    Untangling the magic of music
Why does music make us feel things? An unanswerable question, but one that this podcast does an excellent and entertaining job of exploring. “This Particular Album” tries to understand the magic of music by having comedians and creative types come on to talk at length about their favorite albums and why those particular collections of sound waves and words make them feel things. I was onboard with this concept from the start and charmed by hosts Deborah and Joel, who have an easygoing rapport and clearly love talking about this stuff. Some eps are pretty lighthearted, others have more of a therapy vibe (which I love!). Hard recommend!

I miss listening to music with my friends
I just don’t have the time these days to analyze music with my friends. This podcast is a great substitute. The guests have even convinced me to appreciate artists I once overlooked. I’m a fan of any podcast that plays music in tandem with dialog, but this one is especially good. I also love Screw it we’re just gonna talk about the Beatles which features the cohost from this show.

    An awesome listen
What a fun, simple idea, especially now when taking the time to listen to an entire album is not only possible, it feels cathartic.

    What a Gem
This podcast hits me in all the feels. Bursts of nostalgia and learning about music I wasn’t particularly aware of through the lenses of a person who loves it. Perfect.

Mellow podcast for comedy and music lovers
A fantastic, gentle podcast in which your favorite LA podcast guests talk with two amiable and knowledgeable hosts about an album they love. Fun learning about some of my fave people through this lens, and I love the NPR-lite vibe.

    Fun, but more than that...
Terrific host chemistry and since I’m near Joel’s age i identify strongly with many of his references (debras too). But more than the laughs, the emotions the music brings up to guests and hosts alike are really beautiful to listen to.

This particular podcast is very, very important to me™
Joel is one of my favorite Sentimental Ladies, so I thought I'd give it a shot, and have been listening ever since. It's great to hear how profoundly music affects people. UPDATE: The fact that Joel love(s)(d) Air Supply just upped the game for me.

    A favorite podcast
Being walked through an album, opening up to new and old--eclectic--musicians, and the hosts are super interviewers. Worthwhile to the max.

    The perfect music podcast
Ideally, music podcasts present funny and/ or entertaining people talking about music in a way that is confessional. This one nails that formula perfectly. It is vulnerable and emotional but never forgets to be fun. I love it.

    So Important!
Music is an incredible way to connect without people without even having to talk but I love hearing guests talk about why an album has touched them! Whether I connect to the music or not it gives me different perspectives on how music can factor into life. Love it.

    Time Capsule
I love this podcast. It's a perfect example of how music, particularly an artist or an album, leaves an imprint on you at a certain time in your life (or multiple times in your life). The hosts and guests take you through their personal connections and stories associated with the album and it's incredbly relatable and funny. Subscribe and enjoy!

    Music is Magic
Love hearing guests dive deep into one album and really be forced to talk about their attachment to them.

    Unpretentious Music Podcast!
It's exceedingly refreshing to hear people talk about music that they like without feeling any pressure to talk about music that'll make them sound cool, and the hosts do a great job leading the conversation. Plus, it's a killer guest lineup and a great excuse to revisit some albums I hadn't listened to in a while. GOOD STUFF

    My new favorite podcast
I'm obsessed with this show. If you've ever had one of those late nights with friends after a few drinks, sitting in a living room discussing the important records in your life, you're going to love this immediately. Nothing is more entertaining than listening to someone talk about something they're passionate about, and that's this show in spades. It's also a great way to get introduced to new music/learn new things about the music you already love. You owe it to yourself to check this show out.

    Thank you!
I have been looking for a podcast that gets how important music is. So great seeing people touched by albums as much as I have been. Thank you!

    Into It!
Interesting podcast about music by a funny duo who love and appreciate music — they are not necessarily “audiophiles”...which is refreshing and fun! Great guests too. Enjoy!
  • CourtB610
    Thought and emotion-provoking
This podcast gives time and space to take a deeper look into songs and albums that mean something to someone else. Some of the music I never gave much time to before, but who doesn’t love second chances? The hosts, Deborah and Joel, are relatable and vulnerable which makes it all the better.

Funny people being sincere about great music
Funny people sincerely talking about the music that matters most to them is a great combination! This podcast is a wonderful mix of conversational (and even confessional) discussion of the album of the week, very fun guests, and great production and structure that keeps the whole thing moving along and focused! Really well done!
  • Hobbit138
    Enjoyable because it is personal!
Episode one sets the tone for a podcast that I believe is going to be a wonderful listen because the hosts create an open environment for the guests to share their personal responses to music they love. I’m not a musician yet love music and I’ve created a Spotify playlist dedicated to this podcast because regardless of my own taste I like giving albums a full listen and this podcast is a great way to let some tunes into my life. The hosts bring a personal and knowledgeable touch to the conversation!

    Finally a good music podcast
That may sound like hyperbole but so much of the music critic scene outside of theneedledrop feels so weighed down by pompous pretentiousness or just random fans screaming about their faves nonstop so crafting a podcast about personal favorites from people not part of that scene is wholly refreshing. And it looks like this will be mostly entertainers as guests so it gives a new, exciting layer of interviewing people about their personal experiences through the music that they found meaningful throughout their lives. I ate up the first episode and cannot wait for more.
