Everything is going to be okay!
My all-time favorite podcast! I’ve been listening since the first season in 2019 and greatly appreciate all the hard work, great research, and cheesy puns in each episode. I’ve learned so much about the church visible, and am so grateful for the ecumenical knowledge.

    Great commute listen
I love starting my commute with this podcast! The topics are always engaging as is the host! Thanks Dan!

Sycophants for the liberal Tim Keller
Your 7/27/2024 episode of Keller was absolutely disgusting. He was a registered Democrat, and your saying he wasn’t part of political parties (my awful paraphrase of your awful stance on that heretic) is outright fake news. Y’all need to repent and get your stories straight.

All Christians are part of Christian History
A good reminder and but if encouragement that there are Christians from all over the world who have lived their life for the faith.

    Realistic history
A well balanced look at people over the ages that have good claims to be a Christian. Nonjudgmental and trying to just tell the best verifiable facts without discounting their claims. I am sure that there are hours of research for each 8 minute podcast. Gillespie’s editing makes seamless entertaining programs. With a great gospel assurance to end the program. So everything is really okay.

    Blessing
The reality of our Faith strengthened by its history wending through the ages. Our history is as ironic as the Bible-proof the God is not a great car salesman but sure knows how to get us from one place to another.

    My daily Christian history fix
I listen regularly and very much enjoy Dan’s expertise and humor. The Academy’s loss is the people’s gain. He is a former professor, but he now teaches all of us! I listen on my morning commute and love to start my day hearing him. I’ve come to rely on his signature sign-off saying “Everything is going to be okay.”

    A Must Daily Listen
A daily reminder that the Christian world is huge in the present and the past - it puts one’s personal struggles in context. God works in all things! Sola Deo Gloria. Bonus: the Weekend editions - Dan’s dive into Christian music made me search for my shoebox of 70s and 80s CCM cassettes 😀. Thank you 1517.org.

    Fearfully and wonderfully made
Dan knows his stuff. Excellent podcast of the highest caliber. Well written and researched. Always feel smarter after listening. An academic podcast with the greatest deference to history and tradition. Recent favorite episodes include Bono, Bonhoeffer, and Easter. Lutheran based but open minded and unity seeking, as regards the church.

    Awesome!!
I just stumbled upon this guy and 1517! What fun - I thoroughly enjoyed his biography on Carol Lewis. Just yesterday my good friend and I were talking about watching Alice in Wonderland and now I’m comforted to know that the Disney version is NOT Lewis’s story!!

    My Go-to Podcast
I'll admit it; I don't listen to podcasts very often. CHA is the exception - I try to never miss an episode. I love the format. I find the content enriching, and I love the host. I'll also admit that I'm a Steelers fan and have great memories of Superbowl XIV. And yes, Gillespie coffee is the bomb.

    The Best of Both Worlds
The Bible is my favorite book and history is my favorite subject. Dan blends the two perfectly with his warm and soothing voice (Thank you Christopher) that kickstarts my morning with renewed hope and assurance that “everything is going to be okay”.
  • CSAnglican
    Gillespie’s audio
The audio really is the clearest and best modulated podcast of any that I listen to. I can use a lower volume setting and still hear easily. Sorry, Christoper, I don’t drink coffee.

Quality, educational and affirming our faith!
I’ve been a daily listener and supporter of the CHA for about 3 years now, and it’s amazing how much I learn that applies to my faith to art and to the history of the church. I also am encouraged as Dan talks about many imperfect saints that share our faith and it encourages me daily that because of Christ everything will be ok. Fantastic podcast! Thank you!

    Love this show!
I will listen to anything hosted by Dan van Voorhis. The CHA weekend edition has been an amazing add-on to this already wonderful show!

    Fun and informative!
I always enjoy these quick shows. So much fun for all I am learning! Great balance of Christian history and lighthearted atmosphere.

    Dan is the man!
I came across CHA about 18 months ago and have listened almost every single day since. My 13 year old son listens with me on our drive in and we have some great conversations about the show and laughs at Dan’s jokes. Dan’s grasp of history, sense of humor and humility (funny how those go hand-in-hand) are what make this show so great. I have a masters degree in theological-historical studies and I still learn about people and movements I’d never heard of… I absolutely love Dan’s ecumenical appeal and sense of the global church and pray that more folks tune in to be awakened to its story. Thank you 1517 and Dr. Dan!

    Creative, Excellently Done and Informative
Being a Christian for some time now, a Seminary and Bible College Grad I still learn so much from this pod. I am a Baptist by Denomination and love learning of the how my fellow Christ Follower have viewed things through the ages. I also enjoy the host’s humor and generosity. I can not say more about this short historical pod. Enjoy!

    Bite-Size Daily Church History
This podcast is absolutely wonderful! Explores topics across denominations and does a very strong academic deep-dive into a particular figure or event in church history relevant to the day. It's brief and easy to follow. Highly recommend!

    7 minutes of context
Does well researched, whimsical daily podcast is a must listen for those interested in the context of historic Christianity. I very much enjoy it, it’s only for the consistent tagline on every show. It’s a benediction and reminder of God’s sovereignty.

Great way to start the morning! Often a great reminder that Christendom is so much bigger than I can fathom it to be.

Little doses of obscure important sunshine
It’s a short show with A LOT packed in usually. Dan is always entertaining. And I really like the new format. I’ve heard that 5 minutes a day will raise you IQ and make you the life of the party. Hasn’t happened yet, but I remain hopeful.

    Interesting church history tidbits
I often recommend this podcast because of the interesting church history tidbits. Looking forward to year 3!

Witty and funny but above all very informative
My love for church history has definitely been stoked since I added this podcast to my rotation. Insightful and encouraging, you will hear about sides of people and events that have been lost to the casual student or layperson in the church. A powerful reminder of God’s faithfulness to the church and those who cherish the bride of Christ.

...the rumors of grace, forgivness, and the redemtion of all things are true...everything is going to be ok! Glory be to God!

Great! Seems have have change some though.
Love this podcast! I’ve listened for sometime. I took a break for awhile and when I came back recently it seems to have shifted to sharing purely Christian history facts and stories to now also include a bunch of other random history facts for the date. While the context is sometimes nice I think it’s a bit overkill and I miss the more focused approach. Keep up the good work!

    Many programs
Several programs in 1517 are part of my daily life and routine. A sister in Christ at church recommended a couple to me and I am eternally grateful. Keep up the great work!

    My Daily Breakfast Companion
I have grown to love this daily podcast over the last few months. I only began listening back in March and it quickly became part of my daily routine. I love the light touch of humor and at the end always wait for the humorous twist to the credits. And I enjoy the way Dan speaks, no problem listening to or understanding it!

    Great Podcast, Great Network
I found 1517 a few years ago through a recommendation for the Thinking Fellows podcast, and from there I have gone through almost all of the podcasts on this network and backlogging through them to get all of the wonderful content that they have put out. I graduated from a Lutheran institution a few years ago and was a bit burnt out on my faith, but I can honestly say that these podcasts have been the main reason why my faith has been revitalized and has become even stronger these past few years. I have found myself being reintroduced to topics I learned in my schooling as well as hearing new views and opinions about Lutheranism as well as Christianity in general, which has been super helpful in expanding my view on my faith and how I approach my faith in a practical way. They have a wide range of topics that are covered as well as a good variety that allows you to find something good to listen to no matter your background or knowledge base in theology. Definitely do yourself a favor and listen to some of the other podcasts on this network if you haven’t yet.

    M&M’s for the Soul
I listen to an episode during my morning routine, on my drive home; and since each episode is about 5 minutes long, I often go through a whole string of episodes as if they were M&Ms for the soul and mind. In short, this almanac is great!
  • FQtrC
Great history but writer’s cadence makes it too difficult
I love the history but the Dr. has a cadence that consistently pulls me out of the subject and has me trying to understand his sentence structures and so intent of a paragraph. He lapses into an annoying staccato that is, honestly, reminiscent of James Kirk’s of the S.S. Enterprise. Yet he is also too often unresponsive to the usual meaning of punctuation as he rushes into new sentences and apparent clauses but adds long pauses where there are no commas or hyphens. That and raising his voice st the end of clauses or sentences that hold no queries just makes it hard for me to easily follow the thoughts conveyed. So , for me, it’s hard to remain in and follow the train of thought. I do love the content but the cadence is truly an annoying foible for me, diminishing enjoyment of an otherwise wonderful and unique production. It is the only reason I don’t give a five.

    Encouraging the faithful
The cloud of witnesses does not end with those who are remembered locally or by a denomination. The Church in all it’s glory is Christ’s work through sinners. Keep up the good work.

    Informative yet sarcastic. Perfect
I enjoy this so much I will listen to several at a time. (I have a few to catch up on) I look forward to hearing the quirky remarks at the end and always chuckle. And my new favorite saying, “The rumors of grace, forgiveness and redemption are all true. Everything is going to be alright.” Perfect.
