    The best podcast
I’m not one to leave reviews, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the entire “One Year” series, I am so disappointed to hear that there won’t be more episodes, please reconsider renewing this entertaining and educational podcast, I look forward to each episode, I hope there will be more in the future. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone who hasn’t already listened it.

    The best history podcast!
Slate please reconsider halting production! Josh, Evan and team have done a masterful job of uncovering quirky, personal stories that bring to life important moments in history through a combination of incredible storytelling, touching interviews and rare, archival footage. I’ve learned so much listening and this is definitely my most shared podcast with friends and family. Please invest in this outstanding journalism and more years of “One Year”!

    Keep making more!
This is the first time I’ve left a podcast review, but wanted to add my voice to the others expressing hope that production picks back up! Love listening to One Year, it’s full of stories I probably would never have learned about otherwise and I love diving into the world of a smaller scale, defined story than in so many other podcasts. Will keep re-listening to some of my favorite episodes, but hope we get some more new ones some day, too.

    Please Reconsider Halting Production
I absolutely love this podcast. There is NOTHING negative to say about the content or its delivery. It’s remarkable how many significant events take place in just one year and how most of us fail to recognize or remember them. And, without remembering the past, recognizing the mistakes made, we can not correct for the future. Slate… PLEASE RECONSIDER!

Very bummed to hear this podcast is going on hiatus. I hope Slate brings it back.

    Fun podcast
So many fascinating stories and very enjoyable to listen to. Every year should get the 1 year treatment!

    Love The Show
This is such a wonderful show to experience pivotal moments during a single time frame. I love hearing the stories through the voices of the people who were in the moment. I hope Slate finds a way to continue the show into the future.

    Don’t cancel
This is a consistently outstanding podcast. Love the attention to small moments that provide texture to the past.

I LOVE this show! Please, please bring it back!!!

    Slate keep this show going!
Just listened to the last episode of 1990 and found out Slate had suspended the show? Boo! This has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts, you can’t just take it away from me! I love learning all about the historical events covered in this show, many of them being new to me as I was either too young or not born yet when they happened. Please let Josh make as many episodes as he wants. Great show!

    So. Good.
It’s a real blow to hear One Year is being canceled. There are stories I’ve heard on this podcast that I would never have heard otherwise, and I consider myself well read. It’s telling that it would be canceled after two seasons that really highlighted POC and LGBT+ content, though.

One of the best podcasts out there
Every season is really really good. Familiar stories are told in an interesting way with new information. New topics are very original. Thank you for your good work.

    Ads
I really love this podcast but there are too many ads so I have to give 1 star on principle. There’s no reason to have an ad after the intro if you just had 5 ads before. Its annoying to have to skip so much while I’m working

    Great pod!
I grew up in Cincinnati. I definitely remember Maplethorpe being talked about as though he was devil!

    Loved the Broccoli episode
My uncle a former dairyman in Santa Maria of which Guadalupe is economically associated, started growing broccoli after the government bought his herd. I remember hearing my cousin tell about the decision to grow it.

    Interesting but…
…the editing for the endings of each episodes is really poorly done. I understand the need and desire to have people pay to subscribe and help support the costs of a podcast. I really do. However, cutting off the end of the FREE episodes without any real wrap up or conclusion is not a great way to entice people to go pay for the ending. It’s a little frustrating that the host doesn’t wrap the episodes beyond saying we can hear the rest of the interview if we pay Slate website money. The least they could do is professionally wrap the free eps and advise there is more content available behind their paywall. It’s unfortunate they chose this route because it is otherwise a really interesting podcast! I love that each season focuses on significant events of one year in history, it’s fascinating. But it’s infuriating to have an episode end in the middle of an interview, and in now way motivates me to pay.

    Love this show!
Love hearing the details about these different years. Can’t wait for the 1990s!!

    Pro Tip Download the Episode
I left a previous review about the audio issues and Josh reached out personally to help me resolve. All you have to do is download the episode. It is not an editing problem. The show is so interesting and informative. Stories I have never heard before. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

    Great find
I love this podcast and have listened to seasons 3-5. I see a lot of people say that there are audio issues, but I have not experienced any on any episodes that I have listened to. Not sure if this is something in the first and second season, but I have not had any problems.

    Will the South ever evolve?
The story of the Cannon Street baseball team is heartbreaking but somewhat uplifting given their reception at the Little League World Series. Still, those little boys deserved to play. But the evil white men who stopped them seem to have a legacy even today. The anti-abortionists, anti-voting, and anti-education nitwits are still targeting Black folks in a not so subtle manner. I’m a white woman born in 1964 in a very liberal college town in Missouri and I remember my dad telling me about this story because he was a huge baseball fan. And fortunately, very pro-Civil Rights. He taught me through that story why racism is so awful. Geez. Just let them play (and vote without restriction, control their own bodies, learn actual history, drive while Black, etc.) Shame on the far right for keeping hate alive.

    Commercials are LOUD
We love listening to history podcasts at night. This one is a favorite. But the new season needs some work — the audio is crazy loud during commercials and quiet during the show. It’s jarring and very frustrating.

    4675664 stars!!!!
Each story is so good it could be spun off into its own show, but pieces are wonderfully edited and executed.

    Great!
Glad I found this podcast! Definitely one of my favs now!
  • Star1s1
I can’t get it to play.
It’s not working. It doesn’t play.
  • Groupweeee
    Podcast never plays
I’ve attempted to listen on multiple platforms but got some reason the episodes don’t ever load. All other podcast I subscribe to will play no problem. Frustrating.

    One Year is Thought Provoking
I started listening yesterday, when I saw their newest episode 1942: The Most Hated Man in America, and it was incredibly entertaining and incredibly rich with keynote speakers and real time discussions from 1942, often in the form of radio talk. Great podcast, can’t wait to see what’s next.

    The best!
One of my favorite podcasts! Very interesting and well put together. Can’t wait for more!

    The music!!! Why?
The worst “One Year” yet. Non-stop and utterly pointless background music can’t conceal the vapid content.
  • AAshley524
    Yes!
Engaging, educational, and a great variety of topics! Caught my attention immediately! Great listen!

    One year 1986/1977
Great podcast! As a boomer 1968 was a monumental year. Please consider it. There is even a book about 1968.
  • Zeappfffdhjk
    Excellent!
    Great storytelling and clever topics.
  • /isaac
Strong overall, crazy bad last episode.
Some of the episodes were excellent (the Macarena and “the spot” eps were stand outs), the others were engaging, but the last episode about Carolyn was crazy awful. Why they would end with that one blows my end. The interview was terrible and there was zero context about why we would care

    Carolyn
Carolyn is absolutely insufferable! I couldn’t finish her episode. Her whole ordeal was just an ego trip.
  • HPPAR
    Interesting and well done
Levin does a great job of context, is credible and a fantastic storyteller. A great way to understand historical events and being entertained at the same time.
  • Shailas
    Great listen
Very interesting and easy to get into…

    Great show
I genuinely enjoy this show, it’s a top tier podcast IMO. That said I do agree with the comments in the reviews reflecting on how some of the stories covered for 1995 started losing the thread. A number of the episode topics were fairly obscure and collectively the season didn’t exactly paint a picture of the year in history overall. But it’s all still very interesting.
  • TMnSD
    Meh..
I loved the first season. But I must admit that I thought 1995 was just a little too precious. I graduated college in 1995 and I hadn’t heard of several of the stories told on that season. And when the creators did tell a story that most folks wouldn’t have heard about they didn’t do much to tie it to the larger arc of history. Some kids got swindled out of money because the internet was new? Ok. How does that relate to the internet of today that routinely swindles not so savvy folks out of their money? A woman with Asperger’s started a diary that not that many people knew about was shut down in a few years? How does that relate celebrity culture of today? She seems to be doing really well so I’m not sure how it relates to where we are today. Sorry but the connective tissue was weak.

    Keep the years coming
I’m a fan of Slow Burn so I had a feeling I would love this one and I was right. I love that the topics covered are not just the mainstream news stories from the year but quirky ones too. I hope it continues on to cover many more years.
  • milkekitte
    fun, interesting, surprising
i enjoy how this podcast takes turns going in different directions episode to episode. it doesn’t cover the events or cultural concepts i thought it would but somehow i’m not disappointed over it. unexpectedly interesting. basically, it hits the spot.

    One Great Pod!
I especially have been loving listening to 1995 -in January I gave birth to my daughter as a single mom and needless to say all of ‘95 was an a blur 🤣 thanks great work all the seasons 💗
  • Thegirlsmom
    Great podcast
I was born in 1977 and graduated high school in 1995. Thank you for sharing historical events from 2 significant years in my life!

    Obsessed
Every episode is so good. Even if I think I won’t care about the topic, I get totally engrossed in each episode.
