Dear Young Rocker

420

Dear Young Rocker is a scripted non-fiction storytelling and audio memoir podcast featuring stories from women and trans musicians. In seasons 1 and 2, host/creator Chelsea Ursin tells her own story of finding an outlet for anxiety and her place in the world via falling in love with listening to and playing rock music. Along the way she writes letters of advice to her younger self on topics from mental health to relationships. In season 3, guest musicians are invited to tell their stories and write to their own younger selves.

    Thank you!
Becoming immersed in the exquisitely haunting world of Nadia this season provided a cathartic release from my own life and a nostalgic portal into my youth. I was transported to the past while gleaning gems of truth that synchronistically related to my present. Nadia’s story pulled me out of a dark place by helping me feel less alone and more comfortable sharing myself vulnerably. I found myself creating more during the period of time I spent listening to Nadia’s episodes. I played the harp more, I sang more, I felt more inspired to express whatever was inside of me freely and unabashedly.

Came for the Rock—stayed for the introspection
I’ve listened to all three seasons and am looking forward to the fourth. I really enjoy the stories. More importantly, it’s really prompted me to reflect on my own life and imagine speaking to my younger, mixed-up self. I have more empathy & understanding for who I was and also who I’ve become.

Neither young nor a rocker, but
I love this podcast. Chelsea's storytelling is entertaining and her advice for her younger self (and us listeners) is insightful. I'm a sucker for a coming-of-age story, and this one is very well told! The later episodes from other rockers have been fun to hear, too. Check out Mia Berrin's and LG's if you want a place to start. But really, go back to the beginning of Chelsea's story even though it's been out for a while now - it's timeless and really enjoyable.

Definitely one of my favorite podcasts
Its strange how you can feel a connection to someone so different from you but in some ways the same. I am a 47 year old Harley riding guy who marred early, joined the Army, had kids and grand kids but still felt a kinship and connection to the girl the first seasons. I did dabble in garage bands as a teen and can relate to being shy but when I recommend this podcast I get strange looks. But i think anyone who experienced the awkwardness of growing up should be able to relate to this podcast the way I did. Mayne I can see my daughters and grand daughter's in this. Thank you, you made lots of long miles working fly by

    Dear Young (and Old) Listeners
Chelsea Ursin is a glimmering diamond. Once you start with this show it’ll have you wanting to binge-listen. Chelsea, Please🙏start another podcast so we can get more of your personality and insights. I’ve heard her as a guest on other shows and the intelligence and charisma shines through. Insightful!!
A great narration of her adult self rooting on her younger self through her life as a musician. She brings me back to my day in the music scene that she was inspired by. Also onsite full of what it’s like being a female in the scene. Helped me see things from a different view. Excellent work!

    Great podcast.
She is a really great story teller and it brings up my own memories of growing up, even though I wasn’t a musician.

    So acutely relatable.
If music has been your guiding light through the petrifying world of people in your life, this podcast is EXACTLY for you! What Chelsea has discovered about herself and about people has truly come as a paradigm shift for her life, so much so that she wants as many struggling young music lovers as she can reach, and really anyone struggling with self worth and social anxiety, to learn what she has learned and gain a healthy, enriching perspective on their place in the world. Personally, I was amazed that someone has had, and still has, such a similar type of close relationship with music that I've had. When I was in high school, I saw drumming as my "salvation from the social world". I couldn't get enough of it! But that relationship with it has been a complex one, with my engagement waxing and wanning over the years but my love for it always alive. Chelsea knows this kind of relationship with music. She also knows the restricting force that social anxiety can have in a person's life. Through educating herself and through much reflection of her experiences, she has found principles that I think many people could benefit from. Furthermore, what I love about the writing and character development is that she knows how to express and integrate the internal complexity of her younger self as an additional layer of depth and meaning underneath the recounting of her life's story. It's all just too good.

    Relatable
I love the way she tells her story in a retrospective and self aware way. You get all of the emotions from when she lived it and also good insight into your own life. Overall very raw and beautiful and relatable.

Like watching a movie with my ears
This podcast is such a beautifully produced soundscape as well as a powerful story. I found myself instantly immersed in the world of young Chelsea. I identified a lot with the story and would recommend this to anyone who’s had creative passion in their lives or felt like an outsider at any point. I can’t wait for more!

    Dear Young Rocker
My 13 year old daughter and I truly enjoyed every second of this poignant, heartfelt, bittersweet account of adolescence. We paused often to chat about our own experiences, but rushed back to continue listening. Chelsea’s story was often crushing, but her triumphs, whether she felt them or not, made us cheer her on! We love you!

    For All Music Enthusiasts
The honest and at times raw view into Chelsea Ursin’s - Dear Young Rocker life is not solely for the occasional or avid musician. Chelsea makes herself vulnerable to reach out to anyone who has ever felt awkward. At times you will not be sure if your tears are from her hilarious tongue-in-cheek moments or because she tripped up that memory of yours that has long been tucked away. Personally I am not a musician. However, I am very much an enthusiast and researcher who is constantly reading, watching and listening to everything pertaining to music and musicians. And - I was once 13 - Dear Young Rocker has a beautiful literary way of making a person make peace and even laugh at their own awkward pubescent and subsequent life. Chelsea makes me wish I was a musician. (Maybe someday?) More importantly, Chelsea’s writing and storytelling for Dear Young Rocker makes me always look forward to the next episode. I am certain that you will be most pleased that you took the time to listen to Dear Young Rocker.

Tons of awesome, awkward teenage moments we can relate to!

    Thank you
Have you ever enjoyed a movie, show or podcast & while consuming it you just knew it was going to blow up? Like there’s this Gem that no one knows about but it’s so amazing you just want to tell the world because it’s amazing but some how no one knows about it yet? That is how I feel about this podcast. Chelsea is so real & honest about her life she doesn’t hide the bad & only tell you the good to make her self seen better. It’s a great story that even as a male I could sympathize with her in a lot of ways. This podcast is very professionally recorded with quality equipment. Listen to this podcast!

A fun insightful and helpful exploration of an awkward teen
As middle aged guy I enjoyed this. While I don’t play music many of my friends do (and some family members too). I’ve always felt out of place expect when at a live show. Something calming about it. It’s fun/healthy/enlightening to see the other side through Chelsea’s experiences
  • Peopleofzeewurlrelax
    Thank you
Dear Young Rocker. You have made my life richer. As a lifelong musician you’ve reflected so many moments in my own life playing in bands and managing relationships and generally growing up at the same time. I’m always looking forward to the next episode. You’re ability to tell a story is up there with the best. I can’t wait to hear more and also hear more of your music, which is DOPE. Well done. Forever a fan.

    An honest coming age story
I’m not a rocker but I think almost any person can hear a little of themselves in Chelsea’s heartfelt coming of age story. It’s a refreshingly honest and different type of podcast which has become one of my favorites!

    Quarantine Podcast of the Year!!!
I came across Dear Young Rocker through a commercial on my normal daily listen of another podcast I subscribe too and was immediately curious and excited to hear it! I wish I could have listened fresh from the beginning but I was very happy to binge till I caught up! I connect on a personal level with this show and highly recommend it to any musician out there who grew up or is growing up now dealing with life on they’re own and trying to figure themselves out! Chelsea makes us feel that we’re not alone and that we’re not always going to get things right, but with over coming these life learning obstacles, we become better understanding people!

Such an inspiration to young and old.
I found this podcast through Disgraceland and I’m really glad I did. If you were ever a teenager who felt like you didn’t fit in (and let’s face, that’s probably most of us to some degree), you’re going to love this show.

I love your podcast! It’s very informative. You have inspired me to want to learn rock music and listen to it more.

    A+
DYR is one of my favorite podcasts to listen two. Both seasons are so incredibly relatable. As a 30 something former young rocker myself I felt like at some points it was my story she was telling. I can’t wait for S3!

This old rocker can’t get enough
Chelsea’s storytelling is inspiring and entertaining. If you dig music and ever felt a bit uncool (haven’t we all?) this show is for you. Keep up the great work Chelsea!

    Good
I think overall this is good. There aren’t enough podcasts with female hosts and writers and I think that’s really important to have.

    Needed and gnarly narrative <3
I mean gnarly in the best, punkest way. Chelsea’s voice is relatable, rife with insight, and every episode is well crafted. Favorite quote so far: “Your Cellulite is just as punk as Johnny Ramones weird face” THANK YOU CHELSEA

Way to come at me by describing so much of my childhood without ever having met me, Chelsea. I’m never ready for the feeling of being seen like that, and you saw me. Amazing work.

    It’s a good one!
5 episodes in and I’m totally hooked. As a 36 old I totally relate even though I had a different grade school/HS experience. A great listen and totally recommend to young who are going through it now and those who want something they can relate to. Thanks!!

I’m not a musician but I needed this
I love this podcast so much. Growing up as an anxious loner trying to figure out what to do with my life. This podcast is helping me feel less alone and seen in ways I have not felt before. My message to my younger self would be to stop trying so hard to make people like you, you are much happier being your weird artistic self
  • Greg Antonowicz
    I get it
I relate to Chelsea’s story, finding music, desire to play in a band, and all the awkwardness and anxiety of the teen years. I’m also a New Englander and was a big Siamese Dream fan, but older. I graduated high school the year it was released. I remember a bass player friend giving me a copy of Gish on cassette at a jam in 92’ and liking it. They lost me with melancholy though. I was the biggest Sonic Youth fan in the world! I still like to be invisible sometimes and still find joy and peace when I get to play my guitar really loud and forget about everything. She does a really good job describing feelings that those of us quiet music dorks have a hard time with.

    This feels honest
To Chelsea: Thanks, this connected with me on several levels, dealing with band mates, anxiety and HS stressors, and loving music and it’s power to heal. HS bands were such a challenge just to get it together to practice, you actually played out. Impressive. I did all this back in the 80’s ( I’m an old man!) when we thought we were part of the Paisley Underground. Funny, I work in Mental Health, and your discussions of anxiety and getting help if needed are great. The girl stuff helps with my daughters too. Hope you get much success. 5 stars.

  • cool bean princess
I just joined and already feel this
I am a 7 yr old trans and this is such a good podcast bc before the COVID-19 I got in trouble a lot and I mean A LOT bc I always my classmates have always annoyed me in a way, one of the most common ways was tapping my shoulder and they kept saying “LISTEN TO ME! STOP IGNORING ME!” And I scream at them “LEAVE ME ALONE I CAN LISTEN WITHOUT EVEN LOOKING AT YOU” I wanted to literally put a knife through they’re head like “SHUT UP IT ISN’T LIKE YOU EVEN CARE ABOUT ME LIKE YOU DO WITH THE OTHERS” I have never felt like I fit in I always thought trying to tell them to hurt me it would make me feel better but never did that bc I always was worried that I would get in trouble and if my teacher told my parents they would know how long I have been lying I always wanted to be somebody who killed hoping nobody would judge me and well it started when my grandma died I cared but didn’t I didn’t feel bad and I never knew why but this makes me feel a lot better about myself bc I never felt like this was good I mean I am more girl then boy but I always wanted to be just one! My teachers never let me try out for sports and I wanted to scream at them

A love letter to your younger self
The first episode gave me so many feelings - sympathy for my younger self and epiphanies about my current self. Thanks, can’t wait to keep listening 🖤
