27 Club

1,461

Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and many more musical icons all died at the age of 27. Scandalous, tortured, dramatic, and incredibly talented, these artists torched a wild path to their early graves and shifted and shaped our culture along the way. 27 Club tells their stories. Season 4 of 27 Club brings you the story of Amy Winehouse. 27 Club is hosted and created by Jake Brennan, host and creator of the award-winning music and true crime podcast DISGRACELAND. 27 Club is not a journalistic podcast. It is an entertainment podcast inspired by true events. Certain dialogue and scenes are sometimes fictionalized for dramatic purposes as they are in most scripted entertainment media based on true events. Sources for each episode are available at 27clubpod.com.

    Absolutely amazing.
The writing is simply exquisite. I could listen to this guy read a cookbook. He’d make you believe you now knew exactly how the eggs felt as they were beaten. Really, truly, wonderful pod. Beautifully written and convincingly performed.

    Theatrical, yet informative.
If you want a great storytelling of some of music’s legends, this deep dive is for you. I didn’t like The Doors before the show, and now have even more reason to dislike them… but the tale is wondrous and emotional, and beautifully done. Thanks!

Chilling tales of epic but short lives
Amazing editing. Great content and insight. Gripping stories. After each season I do a deep dive into that persons life based on tidbits in the episodes, learning so much more than I ever knew. thank you for this.

    Amazing
Never thought i’d hear a podcast about Pigpen. Not to mention the rest of the 27. Engaging and powerful.

    Excellent brain food
Jake BrennaN is a great writer, producer and his voice grows and grows on you the more you listen to him. He’s a blast to listen to and every show he narrates I have enjoyed. Great writing!

Pigpen, Jerry Garcia and Junipero Serra
It’s pronounced ‘Hoo-nip’-er-oh’ not ‘June-ih-per’-oh.’ It’s a Spanish word. Episode 7 of Pigpen: Brian Jones was murdered.

    Not sure
On episode three of Jim Morrison, not sure how I feel about this.. I get we need some background but seems to really go off course… also, I feel like this could benefit from another co host to have a discussion instead of making it feel like I’m listening to a book. Maybe I’m not used to this format…

    The Pigpen Series
I can never get enough GD content - this is excellent. Only 4 stars because it seems unfair to get 35 minutes per week. Please release the whole series to binge!
  • djjekdkdi
    I didn’t last 5 minutes
The guy narrating the podcast ,his voice is way too dramatic and overdrawn … I shut it off after 5 minutes of listening .
  • Jefe_fiasco
    Boring historical fiction
Somehow this dude was a fly on the wall to his subjects’ psyches while simultaneously not knowing who they were until recently, then did a little research to cash in on their fame and untimely deaths. And to drag that scenario out for ten 40 minute episodes? The only reason I made it through a couple was sheer disbelief. Suxxxxxxxszzzxzz.

    Hits the spot!
This podcast scratches my itch to drink in every little detail of these impassioned, dead too soon idols of mine. Thank you for delving in-I learn many facts with each episode!

    Loved the Hendrix Episodes!
Loved the story on Hendrix. I learned lots of interesting things about him I didn’t know before. The host does a great job of keeping it interesting throughout. Gives the good and the bad, which shows the complexity of his story.

    A solid counterculture fix.
I’ve been binging Jake Brennan’s Disgraceland on Amazon Music ever since it was recommended to me by a friend last year. I’ve since blew through every episode on stars I’m familiar with, and once I ran out, I went back through the ones that initially didn’t catch my attention. I was maxed out! Upon discovery of the 27 club, I was ecstatic to have fresh material about two of my favorites (Jimi and Jimbo) to geek out on. This show is so well done! Kudos to the whole production team, and them melotron beats are fire, Sir. Hats off to you.

    Zzzzz
Way to draw a short story out foreeeeeever. Host just talks to hear himself. Boring.

    Is it just me?
I love Disgraceland and despite being the opposite of a sports fan I have listened to the Sportsland episodes because I love Jake that much- somehow sports are interesting when he’s talking. However I literally just found out about this podcast a couple of days ago and don’t have the capacity to spend all day listening. I don’t know if it has something to do with Iheartradio? Maybe I just missed the commercials for it? I can’t wait to hear who else is going to be featured. Maybe it is just me but I love this guy and anything he does is going to be great. Quit being so elusive though. Please.

    What a great story teller!
I could listen to Jake all day! Love how he tells stores!
  • glitterpup64
    Annoying and unsubstantial
Affected pretentious poseur normie gawks at the bad boys.
  • RockFanGirl
You feel like you know them
Jake does an amazing job of getting into the subject’s psyche. I believe he is pretty close to reality with his assertions of thought processes and he tells their stories in a unique and riveting way. I feel he does them justice. The Amy Winehouse podcast had me in tears. The 27 club and Disgraceland have quickly become my favorite podcasts.
  • ChrNas
    Season 2… really bad
One sided narrative that focuses on antics, boozing, and drug addiction that drags Jim through the mud. Lots of animosity towards a rockstar legend.
  • SeedManJones
    Great content very well done.
Found Double Elvis about two weeks ago one day at work and have been hooked ever since between 27 club and blood on the tracks what’s not to love!?

    Great storytelling!!!
I love the detail and narrative of each artist. Thank you for filling in the blanks on this interesting club.

    Excellence
From Disgraceland to Badlands, Jake has done it again. This man refuses to disappoint his audience with in-depth story telling and the enthralling way he makes you feel as if you were living the same events like a fly on the wall. Absolutely brilliant, it’s a must listen for any hardcore music junkie.

    27 Club
Great job Jake. Hendrix awesome. Morrison incredible. But Janis I can’t wait for the rest of episodes. The connections with each other are fascinating. Look forward to more.

    I look forward to them!

It’s good but there are editing glitches
Nobody if proofing these. Episodes skipping and glitching, like someone messed up the overlays in garage band or wherever they are edited in.
  • fitchickcpa
    Great podcast
I have listened to all episodes of this podcast, starting with Jake on disgraceland. Helps me wind down at night and prep for bed. Thank you for these entertaining podcasts.
  • redbirds1!
    Excellent Tragic Genius Stories
The podcast is so well done. The details and pace deliver you to the 60’s and it’s enlightened chaos that most of us weren’t alive for. I recommend this for anyone that loves rock & roll! 🤘
  • t4lj
    Writers obviously weren’t Morrison fans.
Season 1 was great and put Hendrix in a good light. In season 2 Morrison was dragged, dogged and just plain hated on for many of the same antics that Hendrix was given a pass for... drug/ alcohol use and womanizing and violence. They also never mentioned that Jim Morrison was physically abused and possibly sexually abused as a child by his father which would explain much of his self destructive behavior. In one breath you say he was a trend setter and in the next you imply that everything he did was stolen from someone else.

    Remarkably Well Done
Venture into the world of legendary icons with 27 Club - filled with vivid narratives, the podcast is woven tight. Gritty, authentic, gripping, these stories reveal the life lived by our favorite musicians behind the glitz of the stage. By far one of the most original podcasts I’ve listened to in quite some time. Keep it up, guys! ♥️

    Sound effects are truly annoying
What are those clicks in the Phil Spector/Lenny Bruce? Not cool, rather extremely annoying. Can’t imagine what the intent was on doing this.
  • sf bender
    Vocal fry ruins it
I live these stories but her vocal fry narration really bums me out. She has a nice voice , just a little to affected.
  • Orange Man 22
    Exceptional Storytelling!
As an avid listener of podcasts, I especially love the high-quality storytelling of this podcast. The 27 Club not only is interesting subject matter, but the quality of the writing and the narration is what makes this one of the best podcasts I have ever listened to. The artwork of the poster puts this over the top! Amazing work, and KEEP THE CONTENT COMING!
  • bri098789087
Started off great but now lacking
I loved the first couple of seasons! The narrator did a great job of story telling, drawing the listener in, the climax of the stories and research on the musicians. Lately I feel this has fallen off the tracks. As another commentor said, I think the narrator has too many projectors going on. And what is up with the latest episode, no introduction to the monotone female narrator? Skip. I won't give up hope on this podcast but if it continues this way and onto Amazon music, I'll probably stop listening.

    One of my Favorite Podcasts
I was listening to Disgraceland one night when I heard the advertisement for The 27 Club. I couldn’t wait for it to start. I binged every new musicians story as soon as it came out. Show is professionally done and the script superb!
