The Women's War

589

These are...not optimistic times for most Americans. Across the world, the dangers of climate change and the terror of creeping authoritarianism present an increasing danger to all of us. After covering this degeneration for four years, Robert Evans went looking for hope. He found it in the unlikeliest of places: Northeast Syria, in a region known as Rojava that’s become host to a feminist, anti-authoritarian revolution. When you’ve heard about these folks in the mainstream media, they’re usually just described as the “Syrian Kurds”, and credited with beating ISIS. They did, in fact, beat ISIS. But their military successes were just part of the story. In The Women’s War, Robert will introduce listeners to dozens of men and women fighting a war for the future of the human soul.

    Inspirational
Captivating and inspirational podcast. I listened to all episodes in less than 20 hrs, learned many new things. Time well spent. Thank you.

    Great show but no transcript?
I tried going to the website they say you can find the transcript and I couldn’t find it. But the show brought me to tears

    Really beautiful piece of journalism
I listen to other podcasts by Robert Evans and only recently found this. This is an inspiring, subtle, and intelligent glimpse into a community and culture that is not readily found in US media. I’m a news nerd - I read a lot of newspapers and listen to a lot of deep dive podcasts and haven’t heard anything like this. It’s just beautiful.

    Black women
It is bizarre to assert black women have been oppressed “from start of time’ black people have been oppressed since coming into contact with the barbarism of Europeans not since the start of time,

    I binged the whole thing-
In one day. I’m pretty sure I need to listen again. This is an inspirational story. It’s helped my overwhelmed apathy, with interviews of people working together for self determination.

Probably Robert Evans’s best podcast so far
This was an amazing listen, on par with It Could Happen Here. Audio is a little hard to hear, especially when on a walk, but I’ll definitely be listening to this a second time once I’m done (I’m on the last episode). Terrific journalism.

    Terrific journalism

Why is this show hosted by a man?
I really dislike so called “women” podcasts that are hosted by men. Defeats the point for me, there are so many excellent women journalists that could do a better job on this.

    A bit immature
This show felt like a Rojava For Dummies, but not in the good, or accessible way. It was centered heavily on the reporter, who instead of using the platform to educate, takes us on his path from ignorance to sort-of-knowing. This adds the the general sense of exoticism that Americans have about Syria and the Middle East at large, and it makes it seem as if the conflict is ‘too complicated’ for the average listener to care deeply about. It did not feel like this reporter should have been assigned this piece.

One of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to
Absolutely amazing series. I ended wishing for so much more. Evans does an amazing job telling the stories of his time in Rojava. It is harrowing at moments, inspiring in others, and is occasionally lighthearted and funny. I highly recommend it. It is a must listen. He approaches his journalism with just the right amount of skepticism, while also giving fair judgements to the people he talks to. You won’t regret listening to it.

Would have loved a female cohost
An interesting depiction of an underreported part of the Syrian conflict. It’s hard to hear a man be so proud and awed of women. It would have been more powerful to hear from a female cohost/journalist. Could do less of Roberts updates about his need to pee and alcohol consumption.

    Incredible, timely, and personal reporting
Fantastic reporting from Northeast Syria, loved hearing directly from the women who are on the ground and sharing their different experiences/perspectives. A timely topic & important stories to share. Thank you Robert Evans. Going to listen to this again and rope my friends in to listen too.

My favorite Podcast of 2020 so far
Such a beautiful story, and so personal for Robert Evans. I highly recommend this ... to eveyone.

Great podcast but for the love of god fix the levels!
Amazing show but rendered almost unlistenable at times because all the recorded audio from interviews is SO QUIET compared to Robert's narration. I admittedly don't know anything about audio production but surely it wouldn't be too hard to boost the volume of those segments to match the volume of the narration?

Amazing podcast! Women power in the Middle East
The reporters were great, relatable and funny. To go into a war torn world and come out with such great stories is awesome. What these women are working towards is incredible considering where they live in the world. I would love to lend a hand in Rojava. Thank you for telling this story.

    Hopeful
I would not have expected to find hope in the story of a civil war brought to me by Robert Evans, but 2020 is weird. The Women’s War shares beautiful human stories. Thank you to Robert and everyone involved.

    Hope in an unexpected place
From a technical side the interviews can be tough to hear at times but Robert narrates when he needs to emphasize a point. The content of this podcast is absolutely amazing for adding depth to an incredible complicated part of the world. You don’t need to be a deep historian to follow this. The editing is fantastic several episodes left me with chills or a feeling of hype. It’s a great listen I suggest spacing it out.

    Thank you
It’s so nice to hear actual interesting and well done journalism.

    Seriously Great Content
“IEDs and suicide vests littering the ground like stray condoms on a San Francisco street.” Robert’s scripting is as strong as any of his shows, and his passion for conveying honestly what he learns is obvious. Not one of his lighthearted shows, and yet probably his best yet. The on the ground interviews tie it all together perfectly.

    Glad for this content
Of course it’s complicated and I’m glad for nods to that with persistent pieces of progress.
  • my tastes are genuinely good
    Top notch journalism
Excellent journalism that grapples with a big and complex topic in a digestible and entertaining way. Thanks to Robert and his team for this fantastic work!

    Must Listen
This is an in-depth look at a part of the world that most people know only through the lens of war and political debate. The host is able to uncover the human struggle and horrific, but uplifting, stories of a people who fight to hold onto a hard-fought ideal. The acts of terror and violence perpetrated on these women would leave most vindictive, and yet they fight to rebuild a more just, humane, and inclusive society than they have ever known.
  • Kayfromtexas
    Really uplifting
I needed a story like this. I think Robert is an amazing journalist.

The first sentence in this description made me want to vomit! Would never listen someone with such derangement they’d write something so irrational.

    There’s Hope for this World
Loved learning about the Rojava community which I had no idea existed. Women co-leading cooperatives and councils and actually being equal to men. INSPIRING!

Tell me more and more and more
Thank you so much for making this podcast. This is a valiant group of people that are giving me nearly the only hope I have for the world right now. The more we talk about Rojava the less radical it will seem.

    Great Content
This is a fascinating subject. It would have been better if reported by a woman. This guys voice is like watching paint dry; not a lot of passion there.

Evans doing what he does best.
Highly recommend. Robert “Corporate Sycophant” Evans is a quality journo, and he goes deep into a story that is clearly close to his heart. No antics in this one, just an engaging story from a part of the world we should all be learning more about. (He’s not actually a corporate sycophant)

    Great host/production
Wow, Robert’s given me great advice over the year (I now own 500% more machetes than when I didn’t listen him). He’s great. Additionally, shout out to producer Sophie who produced the other 2 podcasts and definitely produced this one!

    Great and enlightening
I don’t know how, but I had no idea about any of this. Great job Robert and Sophie. Thanks and keep it up.

    Powerful, provocative and relevant.
This podcast could not be more fitting. I can tell this is going to be a powerful story regarding a people group who clearly have so much to offer. Thank you, Robert, for all the work you do and have done to bring us this capsule of solidarity and enlightenment in a time where we need radical examples for change.
  • MADjr42
Rusty Machete should frighten you more than a clean one
“What if there is no Government?” Serious words prophetically yeeted by Evans; It Could Happen Here happened there.

    Emotional and Impactful
The Women’s War is Robert’s journey to the city of Rojava in NE Syria. We’re only a couple of episodes in and already Robert’s powerful story telling, detailed and well-researched draws you in and tugs at your emotions. It’s clear he feels obligated to share the story of the people of the region’s rebirth and struggle for rights independence. I can’t wait for more! P.S. and it’s produced by Sophie Rae Lichterman aka Anderson’s mom.
  • Game Theorem
    Enlightening
Have you ever heard of Syria? Rojava? SDF? SANES? "The Kurds"? Robert and Sophie made this amazing podcast that straightens it all out, from telling the stories that the corporate media giants overlook and oversimplify, to correcting false information going around on social media, to corroborating the sheer hope that the people here represent, the hope that has made them renown around the world, even if they don't get the support they deserve.
