sbaudiophileHave I discovered the best way to read Ruskin?I have never been able to bring myself to read more than 5 pages of Ruskin's turgid prose. Somehow, Todd Ulbrich's pedantic and fastidious delivery -- which I think is his trademark "Ruskin voice," oddly fits the role perfectly, for, let's face it, that is exactly how old Ruskin really was. The Two Paths are a series of lectures Ruskin gave to audiences of architects in what were then the rapidly growing industrial cities in England, and perhaps Scotland too. Their subject summarizes and synthesizes much of Ruskin's anti-industrialist stance, which is part of the social basis of the Arts and Craft movement. Humor aside, Ulbrich really does read the text with expert precision. You have to be in the mood for him, but if you, like me, are a humanist who loves listening as much as reading,I think this might be the only way to read Ruskin. Now let's hope a publisher pays him to do Modern Painters...
