Utopia or dystopia? It’s up to us.In the 21st century, powerful technologies have been appearing at a breathtaking pace—related to the internet, artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and more. They have amazing potential upsides, but we can’t ignore the serious risks that come with them.Brave New Planet is a podcast that delves deep into the most exciting and challenging scientific frontiers, helping us understand them and grapple with their implications. Dr. Eric Lander, president and founding director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, is a geneticist, molecular biologist, and mathematician who was a leader of the Human Genome Project and for eight years served as a science advisor to the White House for President Obama. He’s also the host of Brave New Planet, and he’s talked to leading researchers, journalists, doctors, policy makers, activists, and legal experts to illuminate how this generation’s choices will shape the future as never before.Brave New Planet is a partnership between the Broad Institute, Pushkin Industries, and The Boston Globe's Opinion team.

An amazing podcast that will stir you to take ownership of this planet that we all share and want to leave behind as a healthy planet for the generations coming after us . Thank you for doing this .

    Interesting idea, but…
This podcast is an interesting idea and could be great. But the editing is not good and the hosting is hard to stand. Pleases get a voice coach or you should change the host. Very irritating and ruins the podcast.

Sometimes great ... just a bit flabby
An update after listening to more. It’s half of a great podcast. Topics are terrific. Deep Fakes and Gene Drives had excellent details and insight. Unfortunately, half of the program is dedicated to wokeness, so objectivity and science is forced to leave the room in favor of how racist and sexist we all are (without any skepticism). So I’ll listen to the first half of each one for the goods. Of course, now I have to wonder if their science is driven by an NPR agenda. It’s gotten so hard to find journalists (now scientists) who play it straight. Here’s my initial review. Just an initial review because it's a new podcast with only a handful of episodes. Some of it is tremendous. The radical approach to climate change episode explored the pros and cons (mostly cons) of changing our atmosphere. It was detailed, logical and without emotion. Just outstanding. However, the future of War, once you take away all the introductions, cute speaker stories, commercials, opening general (and obvious) stuff, there was maybe 5 minutes of something useful and interesting (ok, I'm exaggerating a little). The producers should know that the bigger the panel of experts, the more overhead (and less meat) you get. Also, most people who've been executives of large organizations rarely say anything that isn't already known. Years of interviews teach them that. One side note is I haven't seen the usual NPR-type woke stuff. I'm encouraged that I think I've found a podcast which isn't like the 75 others who frame everything in terms of their politics (right or left). When that happens, I find myself questioning everything they say, so keep this up gang.

    Making an impact
I’m a Software Engineer at Amazon, and the themes discussed here makes it way into slack channels and lunch conversations. Love the work, and we’re taking note

    Interesting Topics w/ Grating Narration
Really enjoy the information in these episodes but my ears just can’t handle all the high-pitched inflections of the narrator’s voice.

    One of the Best
Fascinating subjects, cleverly separated into clear chapters, numerous intelligent speakers, and not overly long. Please keep up your fantastic work!

    Important Voices on Epic Topics
Overviews on the most important issues facing mankind today, explained by world class experts. Entertaining and fun despite the heavy nature of these topics. Insightful stories and honest discussion along the way. My new favorite science podcast.
  • Love me some politics
    Mildly interesting
Only mildly interesting topics. Not really much new information about the topics discussed. If you pay some attention to the news you probably already know 90% of what is presented. This is just a taste thing but the presenter Eric Lander’s style isn’t to my taste. He comes off as if he is talking to a class of third-graders. And his calls for action and suggested plans to “have conversations” with others are annoying. Maybe the podcast was intended for elementary students.

    Fascinating
This podcast really delves into the issues that we encounter in today’s world.

Get out from under the rock dude
Eric - 3 stars for trying and getting some discussion going. Try having a guest who’s older than 30 for balance. Your Pollyanna appeal to do the right thing is incredibly naive. Most people already are doing fine on the internet. Your audience should be those not participating well with others (as we learned in Kindergarten), but those bad actors. This supposedly awesome “platform” of (un)social media is an unqualified disaster. Our kids have no idea how much they are giving away access to themselves. Companies used to have to pay to advertise to us and only when we allowed it (ie when we tuned in on TV or picked up a print source). Now people run around giving their lives away with unchecked, unlimited access right in their own pockets. Supposedly this makes us happier and more connected - both have been utterly disproven through research and unending evidence to the contrary. This is the legacy of Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg - they created a monster they couldn’t control out of the desire for profit. Hopefully the rest of us don’t forfeit our souls to them.

    Amazing podcast - Very deep…
This podcast is just what we need. These problems are very real and very pressing, we need to act, and we need to do it fast. I’ve loved this podcast so far and can’t wait for more episodes!

    Great show!
Really enjoying this show so far! It's an approachable and in-depth look at current work in science and technology. Definitely recommend.
  • ItsNotA-Bug
Excellent take on the idea of deliberately altering the climate.
People saying the podcast slams one party should remember one party has been calling human-caused climate change a hoax. One party has delayed, obstructed and vetoed serious action to manage the problem for three decades. We are in serious danger from climate change due to man made global warming. These radical ideas about reflecting more sunlight away from the earth are the result. If we had started doing something about getting away from fossil fuels back in 1988 when scientists first warned Congress about the problem, these desperate ideas would have never appeared..

    TIMELY!
thoughtful insight from someone who knows where science and culture connect

    Needs refinement
Noah needs to not let his emotions get the best of him when his interviewee expresses viewpoints different than he holds. Yelling at the judge was so tacky. Might as well been listen to a FM radio shock jock. Unsubscribe. I love Pushkin Ind podcasts but this one is not worth your time.

The episode on deepfakes was fascinating!

    Incredible show
Highly recommend - the host is great, interviews are fascinating, and the topics are extremely timely. If you’re looking for a show to get hooked on this is it.

    Too political
When you can only slam one political party and you want to call it science. Not subscribing.

Very cool subject matter and excellent production
Great podcast. Right up my alley. Intriguing and not immature fluff. Can’t wait for more.

    Necessary content but poor execution
First episode’s guest: Malcolm Gladwell, a charlatan only invited there to ask questions to the pretentious Host. Really? Absolutely scripted and boring. This is not what people of the XXI century need. Somebody else will have to do the job.

    A must listen to podcast
This podcast is amazing. If you are interested or concerned about our future you must listen to this. It describes the choices we must face as a civilization and the potential repercussions as a result. I cannot wait for the remaining episodes. Well done!

❤️ favorite food for my brain ❤️
Thank you so much, what an engrossing series - i cant wait for the rest of the episodes! Please considering making this a continuous series from which to further expound and branch out. PS: I’m totally crushing on Dr Lander’s brain ;)
  • Back Sackandcrack
Nobody who listens to podcasts regularly is learning anything new from this
First episode stars the charlatan malcom gladwell. Second is about how ScArY deepfakes are, which has been talked to death by ten thousand thought leaders in podcasts and YouTube. It’s also somehow an hour long even though it has nothing new to say.

    Recommend for scientists AND non-scientists
This podcast does not disappoint!! Ever since taking Eric Lander’s biology course on Coursera, he has been a hero of mine. He makes science simple to understand and stretches my curiosity. LOVED THIS PODCAST! Thank you Dr. Lander!!!
