Our Body Politic

600

Created and hosted by award-winning journalist Farai Chideya, Our Body Politic is unapologetically centered on reporting on not just how women of color experience the major political events of today, but how they're impacting those very issues. Weekly episodes feature in-depth conversations about the economy, health, politics, education, the environment, and the most prescient issues—because all issues are women's issues. Tune in every Friday everywhere you listen to podcasts, and on public radio stations around the country.

    Always worth the listen
This is one of the most thought inspiring and provoking podcasts out there. I always learn new things and appreciate getting an inside opportunity to hear from a community that I am or as familiar with. As a white woman, I aim to expand those who I learn from and this podcast is an incredible wealth to me.

So smart, engaging and here for me
I love this podcast for the diversity of subjects that are covered from perspective that speak to me and that I seek out. Thank you for the January 6th special investigation. That was so informative to hear from people of color that were directly involved in investigating the attempted coup of white supremacists. Really amazing and vital work. Now I know why there have been so many guest hosts for Ms. Chideya but they’ve all been great. Please keep up this brilliance!

Medicine for anxiety about the state of our nation
I’m so glad I found this podcast. The January 6 series was a wonderful antidote to my daily increasing dread fueled by fascist white supremacy and the upcoming election cycle. Thanks to everyone — and especially the investigators — for truly inspiring work.

    You Are So Necessary
I don’t know how many 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ratings they will allow from me. But I wouldn’t know half of what I know about what’s happening in the world or within the Black world if Farai didn’t focus and report on it. I had no idea half of the guests even existed because mainstream isn’t covering them. I have admired Farai for a while. I have learned so much from her writing and journalism. 💐 Keep doing it girl, you do it well. 👍🏾🫶🏾 Lolita Pitts/ Big LoLo 😁 Clinton Township, Michigan

    So needed
I have been a fan of Farai Chideya for well over a decade. This information void that she has filled through this podcast is just so effective and incredible. I love that it brings together women authorities and experts, known and unknown, from all over North America to discuss what is not spoken about from the perspective of not only being black but woman. It really is needed by the black community and I couldn’t be more pleased to see black women succeeding!

    Farai Chideya - great work!
I was wondering what she was doing - since many years in NPR & her episodic career book. This podcast was a nice surprise! Of course, the show is well informed and centered on the multifaceted lived experiences of black women and so much more. Thank you!

More Black & Brown queer and trans content
Listened to transpolitics 101 and super informative. I didn’t realize all the insidious ways the state is trying to control! It runs along the same lines of eugenics, it’s another public health and human rights issue - and appreciate the visibility on this podcast. These episodes have been becoming such an important place for development of politicization and I hope you all continue to challenge and push us through this content. Would love an episode around abolitionism!!!

More content like this: Our Nation’s Enduring Public Health Emergency
I love how this episode dug into the nuances of gun violence, women’s health, and specifically black ppl’s health. The fact that roe v wade is being turned over at the same time men are being encouraged to buy guns is no accident, and y’all did a great job of highlighting that overlap. I don’t think the vast majority of ppl are making that connection.

    Wow!
Thoughtful, entertaining podcast. And THANK YOU for introducing this old white woman feminist to Monica Martin. What a writer and voice! I just downloaded several of her songs. Nice to see remarkably talented musicians / songwriters woven into the bigger conversation. Well done!

    Makes Bad News Good
The host is serious and insightful, and somehow the lilt in her voice makes daunting huge systemic issues breakable into intimate laughing conversations, and somehow hopeful. Amazing.

    Wow
Farai is an amazingly strong, intelligent woman. I love listening to her talk politics. This is amazing. Keep it up. Speak for the truth. Stand up for human rights. All humans. Thank you!

Unapologetically feminist and women of color news analysis
I was getting tired of shows with majority white hosts and the questions they were asking even guests of color were too obvious, not engaging, and in many cases surface level and boring. Thank you for bringing an unapologeticly feminist, women of color perspective on today’s news. This is my new go-to podcast for news analysis.

    Please keep doing this!
Thank you so much to everyone involved with the Our Body Politic podcast!!!!! I for one really NEED these perspectives! I can’t praise this show enough; such quality productions and important topics. I wish I could “like” most of these positive reviews. Thank you Farai Chideya & team for providing much needed perspectives on living in these times.

The type of show we need now
Our Body Politic is exactly what we need now. I love being able to listen to this show every week for thoughtfully curated voices and perspectives that are often downplayed or overlooked in the rest of the news media. The recent turn to feature other podcasts is exceptionally brilliant and helpful, and represents the epitome of how journalism should function in our world. Instead of a purely competition-driven philosophy, the purpose of OBP’s work is sharing and discovering the truth of any given situation or issue, and all the complexities therein. Thank you!

    Insightful Reporting
Farai Chideya asks the critical questions of the times we are in. Her guests are super informed. Most important for me as a white woman fighting a white supremacist system is listening to the voices of people of color. I can hardly wait for each week’s episode to appear.

Smart & compassionate take on the news.
Farai Chideya has brought smarts, compassion, perspective, and a beautiful voice to news radio, Internet sites, and magazines for decades. So great to have a whole podcast from her! It's a good combo of timely issues, analysis, and a warm, human approach to our everyday lives. Listening to Our Body Politic is kind of like popping over to NYTimes.com, only without the clickbaity headlines & endless rabbithole of gloom (news/op eds) and shallowness (the rest). And oh yeah, here the experts I'm listening to — invariably intelligent, well spoken/well-suited to the podcast format, sometimes conservative but often liberal — are women of color. As a mostly-white woman, I feel grateful for the window into other perspectives, and that I feel welcome as a listener. OBP feels like a podcast for all thoughtful listeners.

Missing facts. States “facts” without any evidence just conjecture
This podcast is interesting and worth a listen but should be taken with a grain of salt. I appreciate listening to all voices of all sides and found this podcast to share their opinion from an extremely biased perspective. Starting with what voter id requirements mean. Many democratic states have harsher rules than Georgia (Delaware, NY, Ohio) and yet it’s supposed to assumed that asking for an ID is racist? Ok, we’ll dig into that bc it’s factually false but being spread as fact.

    Important voices
I've followed Farai since 538, and was excited when she announced this project. It's developed into something really special. The addition of Errin and Karen more recently have strengthened an already impressive resource. The topics are vital, the voices are important. We need these Black women's voices front and center, and Farai's has been a trustworthy hand on the tiller. This podcast has become one of my favorite, and I hope Farai & co. will continue to get the attention they deserve and that the American political and cultural discourse really NEEDS.

    The Conversations We Need
This podcast is such an essential resource for our collective political health. The conversations push my thoughts and I walk away with questions about justice, privilege, representation, and the informative power of everyday political experiences and people. Super fortunate to have encountered this, and excited to share with others! Thanks so much for the work you do!

Five starts only because that’s the max
Ive been a long time follower of Farai because she gives a clear eyed, critical perspective, regarding politics and social issues. It is this same perspective that informs the selection of her guest contributors and ultimately what makes her podcast one of my regular go tos. 5 stars only because that’s the maximum.

    You always make me think
Thanks so much for always giving me so much to think about. I am a public school teacher & 2 people who have transformed my teaching are Dr. Bettina Love & Dr. Gholdy Muhammad. I am not sure if you’ve had them on but these 2 women are educational powerhouses who are making real change. I’d love to hear you interview them!

    Thought Provoking and Necessary
This is one of my favorite podcasts. It challenges my thoughts and offers the opportunity to reflect more deeply inward while listening to issues that effect so many in our communities. I need my eyes opened to things that I might not see and I feel this show accomplishes this. Also, I especially enjoyed listening to Nadia Hashimi’s interview a few weeks ago. Hashimi is one of my favorite authors and I was excited to hear her discuss her experiences and the other important work she is doing.

    beat thing i did today
I am currently a junior at Colorado State University and I am taking the bus down to see my family for the long weekend. I was going to listen to music like I normally do on these bus rides, but instead I stumbled upon this podcast. It is people like this that help me maintain faith in humanity. People who take the time to talk about hard subjects and converse with others. I am truly grateful for this platform for giving me the opportunity to expand my knowledge. I give high recommendations.

    Essential Podcast
Far too often American newsrooms have failed to have inclusive spaces that truly do reflect everyone in our body politic. What Farai has done with this podcast is exceptional, giving fantastic and essential conversations on the political news each week and unflinchingly calling thing what they are. Everyone must listen to this.
