Good Assassins

3,004

Season 2 is the unbelievable but true story of the greatest spy of World War II. The Nazis don't know her name, but they want this woman dead. A mysterious agent is strategically dismantling their violent grasp on France and not only leading her own resistance factions but inspiring others. The Gestapo sends their devious double-agent, the priest Robert Alesh, to hunt down The Limping Lady before she threatens their entire push for Western Europe. But Virginia Hall was tougher and more resilient than they ever expected. Season 1 was a Top 10 hit with millions of listeners, making it one of the Top 20 new podcasts of 2021. Bestselling author and journalist Stephan Talty returns with Season 2 of Good Assassins: the dramatic story of a different kind of spy. Written by CD Carpenter (“American Hostage”) and produced by the award-winning team at Diversion Audio.

    Great production and story telling
I really enjoyed the writing and the production. It felt more like listening to a story than just history.

    Great Story, Mediocre Podcast
I wanted to like this podcast, because I was riveted by the first season, the narrator is excellent, and Virginia Hall’s story truly is incredible. But: 1) It’s hyperbole to call her the greatest spy of the war - the Frenchwoman Marie-Madeleine Fourcade ran an incredible network of spies and Resistance members, for just one example; 2) The narrator should have trusted himself to tell more of the story instead of using recreated conversations, which are mostly just annoying and which feature some cartoonish French accents; 3) Odd mistakes crop up, such as saying that she had difficulty using her left leg (which was wood below the knee) on the accelerator of an ambulance when in fact it was the clutch pedal, not the accelerator. Those mistakes left me wondering what others there are in the podcast. The podcast is still worth listening to, however. The narrator is excellent, several experts appear on the podcast, and background information on the was is provided in order to put Virginia Hall’s experience in context. There are multiple books on Virginia Hall’s life, and there are multiple podcasts that devote a single episode to her. If you don’t have the time or interest to read one of the books but want more information than a single podcast episode can provide, this series is worthwhile despite its flaws.

    Paying for ads
Paid for membership, still tons of ads. So annoying! All I want is to not listen to ads. I wish I could give someone a bunch of money and they’d stop the madness. lol

5 stars for the content - 1 star for the volume of Ads

    Fascinating Post-war History
Captivating throughout, with testimonials, and first-hand experience. A great look into espionage from a non- American perspective.

    Bothersome ads
Loved this podcast - so interesting. But and this is a big but - the ads are so disruptive and so frequent that I almost turned away - any attempt to stay with the flow is constantly broken - if I heard one more time - “im a five time Olympic gold mentalist and I make shoes” I thought I would throw my phone out the window. Of course I understand that you need advertisements to make this work - but I have never experienced such obnoxious placement and frequency and repetitive - I know two people I suggested to listen and they turned it off because of the endless ads - follow the guide of The NY Times Daily - upfront once in the middle And at the end - it’s enough

    so many ads
season two has pretty good information but the amount of ads is simply unbearable. got through two episodes before i couldn’t listen anymore.

Bad European Accents & Too Many Ads
Great story but the multiple ads (4-5 per 30 min), and phony accents distract too much. I stopped listening; too bad.
  • RS1009th
    why the fake french accents??
The first season was a fantastic spy story. i’m on episode 2 of season 2 and I want to hear the story, but the fake french accents are so atrocious i’m not sure i’m going to be able to keep listening. very odd creative choice.

    Smart and very well done
I really enjoyed both seasons of this podcast. It was researched, written and edited very well. Also just wanted to say thanks for telling Virginia Hall’s story. A lot of stories about women in history tend to get lost and forgotten.

    Great content drowned by ads
Each 30-40 min episode contains four (or more) 2 minute ad reads and the same 90 second intro, completely destroying any flow or rhythm. The 15 or 20 minutes of content features fantastic storytelling and great interviews, but is borderline unlistenable with all the interruptions. Finished the last few episodes out of spite.

Great change of pace from my usual true crime
Different pace at first but then excellently presented once the tempo set in. Nicely done, really really enjoyed this podcast.

    So interesting!!
Loved season 2. I also found history boring, but this podcast made it so interesting!! I can’t see to access season 1 on apple podcasts. I hope it ends up being available again at some point because I would love to hear it!

    Season two
I was so excited to see that season two had been released but the amount of commercials is intolerable and makes listening impossible. Extremely disappointing.

    Season Two
Loved it! Just as intriguing as the first season! Virginia Hall is my new hero!
  • JaniceH727
    Hard to listen to
This podcast is definitely better for history buffs. I was expecting a spy thriller but it barely mentions Virginia. Instead it focuses on experts talking about what it was like at that time. When Virginia is featured it’s full of painful cheesy dialogue. Sadly this one is a pass.

    Season 2 what happened??!!
Season 1 was so well done. Why this garbage made up dramatization dialogue? So unnecessary. Can’t get through it. Un subscribing.

    Season 2 Borderline Unlistenable
Gosh I loved Season 1 - smart, well-structured and reported. Constantly surprising. The cheesy contrived fake dialogue in Season 2 has me about to give up. Will see if perhaps it dies down but not optimistic.
  • Sissarae27
Season 1 great, season 2 disappointing!!!
Season 1 was sooooo good and I was anticipating season 2 for a long time!!!! Sadly, btw the horribly cheesy dramatized scenes (none of these were in season 1!) and the insane amount of commercials that make the episodes half as long, this podcast is about to lose me. So bummed.

    Season 2 a downgrade
Season 1 was amazing. Season 2 is hard to follow with several 3-minute breaks for ads. It’s unbelievable how many ads there are, and the story - which should be compelling - just isn’t as easy to follow.
  • B&HBagels
    Season 2 is mediocre
Season 2 pales in comparison to season 1. Season 1 was excellent. Season 2 is just ok. the re-enactments aren’t good and the story is kind of boring. There are way too many advertisements making the episodes way too short.

Great story, far too many ads
Loving the story and the modern perspective, but 7+ min of ads per episode is just too much.
  • sir kennedy
    So many commercials
The amount of advertising is so distracting

    Advertising is brutal
I know podcasts need to make money but the number of ads in this podcast is absolutely nuts. When I usually skip ads, I only have to tap the forward button two or three times. On this podcast it’s nearly ten times, and it’s 2-3 times in the show. I just wish there was a way I could pay a few dollars to not have ads at all. Also, I haven’t listened to season 1 yet but after reading the reviews I’m glad I didn’t because it sounds like it was much better. The topic of this season is fascinating but the reenactment is very much over the top. That’s what happens when a podcast has a good season - it starts getting interest from outside producers or investors who try to change it because they think they know better but they’re just toxic. I’m sure the creator is sad to read our reviews and maybe powerless at this point. Hopefully he’ll get control back for the next season.

Wonderful historical broadcast with tie in to current events
Great podcast that makes me think about current ents and rise of fascism in the United States today.

    Skip Season 2
S1 was fantastic. There were times where it was a little slow, but the ratio of historical content to conjecture was just right. I especially enjoyed the "Mossad's Greatest Hits" episode. The amount of scripted content in S2 just ruins it. The writing and voice acting is mediocre at best. The real issue, though, is that the show loses its sense of authenticity by including so much fiction.

Unbelievable story, can’t wait for Season 2!
Today I finished my third listen-thru of the podcast. I also enjoyed the audio book. If it’s not clear, I love this account and how the events shaped history! SO excited for Season 2!! Update: Biggest criticism of Season 2 is having loads of scripted dialogue. I believe Season 1 had a great balance of likely dialogue with archived footage of interviews to keep things grounded.

First season is a well-told story, well researched and formatted
Great work on specifically the first season.
  • Bigdaddyrape
    What a let down
First season was great couldn’t wait for season 2. Great subject for season 2 but the scripted actors with 25% of each episode being ads is a brutal listen. Skip this one, it ain’t it

    SO Freakin Disappointed!
I am a huge fan of season 1 of Good Assassins, and had the privilege of having my question read on the air in the last episode. So it was with my devotion to the podcast that I waited with bated breath for season 2. I can completely appreciate the research that has gone into creating season 2. That being said, I absolutely hate the format of this season sounding like an old time radio show. Interviews with professors and experts in the field relating to the story is much preferred to the hokey conversations acted out. Plus the fact that there is an ad almost every 5 minutes, making it all the more difficult to listen to. I don’t know what made you guys think this was the way to go, but I truly wish more thought went into the production. I’ll continue to listen out of respect to the research, but I pray that if you consider a third season, you will go back to the way season 1 was produced.

    Too many commercials!
Six minutes! Six minutes of freaking commercials! Are you kidding me?!
