Buffering: A Rewatch Adventure

TV & Film #228

Buffering: A Rewatch Adventure began in 2016 with Buffering the Vampire Slayer, an episodic rewatch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, hosted by Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristin Russo — and now continues through some of the most iconic genre shows rooted in the 90s and 00s - including The X-Files, My So-Called Life, and Yellowjackets.

    Funny, thoughtful, kind, joyful
Their reviews of the imperfect episodes (let’s be honest, with 20+ episodes a season…) are just as entertaining as the ones for the bangers. I am immensely delighted that we are getting a round two with spoilers.

    Swoon
2016? : Not huge into podcasts but 2 episodes in and I'm hooked. Even if you haven't watched Buffy in awhile it's still totally entertaining. 2024 update: still not a huge podcast listener but coming back every week for the new watch through. Thank you for being my comfort blanket once again.

    So much joy!!!
I knew that eventually Kristin and Jenny would get back for a second go-round, and I knew it would be as brilliant and educational and fun and cathartic as before, but what I was not ready for was the actual full-body chills that wen through me when I heard the original, adorable Willow jingle. Thank you

    Podcast GOLD. ‘Nuff said…
I cannot celebrate Buffering Cast enough..everything they do is so fracking good!! X-Files, Buffy, My So-Called Life, Fallout - I love them so much. I know it’s probably maybe too toxic and patriarchal but I so wish they’d do Supernatural. Between the crossover of both Buffy AND X-Files actors and with episodes like - the high school Musical one, the Scooby-Doo one, the shape-shifter/Monster Movie one AND the brilliant recurring fan fav character Charlie Bradbury (a potential from Buffy) I just think it would be truly MAGICAL. A girl can dream.. But please, just keep doing what you do! You make the world a better place for all us weirdos, sci-fi lovers and scoobies! XO

    Definitely give this a try!
Just started this podcast this week since I figured I would give watching Buffy a go for the first time. Shocked it took me this long but I am so excited to listen to the podcast immediately after watching the episode. Love their take on the show and the songs are such a fun vibe. I can’t wait to keep listening!!

    10/10 no notes
I’ve been listening to Buffering since 2018 and love it so much. Come for immolation watch, stay for the sexual tension awards. Also, the songs are so good. I love that the episodes are 90 min and appreciate the thoughtfulness as much as the hilarity.

    Love this pod!
I’m a huge X-Files fan from way back when and I just discovered this podcast! Thanks to the hosts for making me laugh while I relive one of my fav shows ever.

The best podcast ever, seriously my gold standard.

    Fun podcast
Overall an enjoyable podcast to listen to, but even as a feminist woman who shares their view of the world, I think they can be a bit overly negative on themes of the show. Also, I would have enjoyed some academic discussion (Passion of the Nerd is a GREAT YouTube series for that, discussing Whedon’s critique of patriarchy symbolism, the underlying existentialist philosophy, etc). Lastly, some of the episodes just drag on—they’ll get super repetitive. I prefer the episodes that are about 60-70 minutes, rather than the 90 minutes! That is all to say, I’ve been listening to this podcast for two years, working my way through slowly.

    Funny and insightful
They need to review every TV show ever made and will be made. Top notch!

    Good show but
I wish there was one episode that didn’t randomly skip 30 seconds forward or backwards or skip whole sections that they never come back to later just completely takes me out of the moment listening. Whoever edits this show together should really listen to it when they do because it’s getting worse with every episode. Unless it’s an apple podcast thing then never mind. I love this show and the perspective they give that I could never have as someone who loves the show. It’s great. But the jump around man. Killing me.

    Wonderful, thoughtful and fun
I love this podcast - it’s my favorite ever. Love the music, love the guests, and the way Kristen and Jenny love and also take apart Buffy. They’re commentary is so thoughtful, and they take the world of the show very seriously. They’ll also have wonderful guests that bring a lot more knowledge and nuance to the conversation. Jenny’s songs are awesome! And I just in general love their senses of humor and their dynamic. So glad I found this podcast, and I’ve started watching X Files now mostly to just follow along with Kristen and Jenny’s podcasting :)

    The BEST Buffy podcast
Made my way here on a rec after listening to a very biased one note podcast about Buffy. So pleased to see that this one discussed the characters and themes critically and intelligently despite their own biases. Even though you know which characters they love and which they don’t love as much, there is always thought and understanding given to each story and character. So much nicer to listen to than some of what’s out there!

    Love the evolution!
Loved the podcast when it was about Buffy. Love it even more now that we’ve moved into The (e)X-Files!!

    Decent show…
Loved the social justice aspect. I was disappointed when they started introducing people as “real witches” and “animal spirit communicators” or whatever, but it was a decent podcast aside from the woo nonsense and magical thinking. At least they’re not flat-earthers or something like that.
  • CosmicAttack
So glad I found this podcast!!!
I’m a newly blossoming Buffy fan working my way through the last leg of the series, and I found this podcast after watching the episode Seeing Red and finding myself in desperate need of some sort of companionship/ comforting expert analysis in order to keep braving season 6. Suffice to say I found exactly what I was looking for and then some! This pod has made me feel connected to a whole community of Buffy lovers, which has made watching the show so much more rewarding. It feels like I have so much of the show left now that I get to listen to a breakdown of every episode after watching it. Jenny and Kristen do an amazing job delving deep into the Whedon of it all in a smart, hilarious and deeply entertaining (and GAY <3) way. You guys ROCK!
  • ParaSocialFunTime
    Sooooo good!
Somehow these two wonderful humans banter ever more delightfully after their divorce. Jenny and Kristin unite to form a brilliant dyad—and we are all the richer for it. Cheers.

    Had to stop listening
I listened to a few episodes about yellow jackets, but couldn’t continue. Kristin Russo used the “f” word so frequently that it became really annoying. In some cases almost in all or every other sentence. Similar to people that continually say “uh” or “um.” Otherwise, her comments were interesting/insightful. But the constant “f” words were too distracting/annoying; I switched to another yellow jackets rewatch podcast.

    Exactly what I wanted
I started listening in September and I’m about halfway through. I’m sad I didn’t find you sooner. I would have loved to go through all of this with you in real time. I love their humor and connection. Even when going through hard things. Keep up the great work. Y’all are the best.

    Love
I started listening on October 13, 2022 and as of today November 20, 2022 I have finished the entire podcast. I couldn’t stop listening I loved it so much. I was sad that I was late to the party and missed going through the journey but it was as still a beautiful journey. And I got to come in at the end and hear the last episodes in almost real time. Love it so much! Such a fun way to talk about the different characters and always an open community!

Too annoying to listen any more
I really wanted to like this podcast and stuck with it for the whole first season but I just can’t any more. The hosts are two women in their thirties who sound like a couple of giggly twelve year old girls. Their voices are like fingernails on a blackboard. Sometimes it is hard to understand what they are even saying because they talk really fast and at the same time. The episodes where they have guests are actually painful to listen to because then there are three or four people all talking at once. We get very few comments on the episodes themselves and most of it is fluff like fashion and finding sexual tension where there is none. I love the character of Cordelia as much as anyone but if I hear that Cordelia song one more time I will scream. The only episode that wasn’t totally annoying was when they had an actual actor from the show on, so I think I might listen to the episodes with the actors and skip the rest.

    Love this Podcast
I have loved listening to this podcast and am sad we’ve reached the end, although we knew it would come. I know you’ve moved on to the next but I think it’d be amazing if you guys did Wynona Earp at some point!
  • CLH0713
    Mostly awesome
Love the content, the music is great, but omg the editing is awful! Someone really needs to go back through and fix all the places where clips of them talking get repeated several times and where things get cut off in the middle. They plug their merch constantly, they also talk on and on about inclusion and such, but their only some of their apparel goes up to a size 2x which is absurd.

I am so in love with this

Long time listener & fan, recently disappointed
I have been listening to this show since 2016, I have gone to events, bought merch, and have religiously told other people who enjoy Buffy to listen to this show. I was happy to see Kristin and Jenny include new dynamics and conversation to the show where BLM is concerned and don’t really mind the political speak, I actually find it that much more informative. However this 7th season has been extremely difficult to listen to, to the point where I’ve had to pull out my ear buds and take a big sigh. Buffy is the main character, she is our leader, and the way that they’ve been piling on her “behavior” this season is unbearable. I feel like they’ve forgotten entirely how much she’s been through, what she’s sacrificed for the scoobies/world and what it means to be a slayer. Empty Places was the last straw for me. I know we need to criticize our heroes but to this extent makes me feel like saying “dude do you even like the show?” Other than this hot take, the interviews and content are well worth the listen for the first several seasons.

Smash the demon lizard white supremacist patriarchy
My sister and I grew up obsessed with Buffy, and they recommended this podcast to me. It is yet another way for us to bond over our problematic fave TV show and analyze everything at the juicy center. The pod is always hilarious, insightful, and fresh, and I really admire how Kristin and Jenny have updated their methods and continued to do their utmost to be respectful to all marginalized communities throughout the years, particularly their commitment to affirming Black Lives Matter. I am going to miss it so much after the upcoming finale!

    1 single complaint
This podcast has me ENJOYING (and laughing and tearing up during) my drives in MN winters?! And unlike other complaints, mine is NOT about their opinions or hot takes. I just feel like they derail/ get distracted often. Even in their Yellowjackets episodes, they stay way more on topic. Here I feel like they could often cut 30 minutes of stuff that their hardcore fanfolk can choose to listen to. And it’s not every episode that is excessive, just a lot.

  • I Wear the Cheese
An unfortunate example of having your cake and stress-eating it too
Let me preface this by saying that Black Lives Matter, 2020 was a wake up call, and we can all do better. With that said, this show has unfortunately unravelled into the premise: what if white guilt had a show? After a lengthy hiatus in 2020 following BLM, the show returned with POC input behind the scenes, but, weirdly, seldom behind the mic. Instead, our two hosts take any and every opportunity to loudly protest Buffy’s undeniable shortcomings in terms of minority representation, often at the expense of talking about the story. It *feels* performative, even though I’m sure they believe what they’re saying. It’s a shame because the chemistry between these hosts is undeniable and the banter can be great at times. But more often than not, they sound like the white people in ‘Get Out’ - “I’d have voted for Obama for a third time if I could!” Add some swears for emphasis, and you have this podcast. By contrast, their sister podcast ‘Angel on Top’ is pretty much always a delight, coincidentally co-hosted by a woman of colour. If you’re a Buffyverse fan and looking for a podcast, I’d recommend you start with that one. The Buffering hosts make occasional guest spots, so you can test the waters before deciding if you’re ready for the full white fright experience.

    Delightful :,)
I adore this podcast and it’s lovely hosts, Jenny and Kristin, as well as their amazing guests. They write ORIGINAL MUSIC every week! How amazing is that?! There are songs for every episode and jingles for the characters. It is really fun to rewatch Buffy with them, and it is so valuable to hear their commentary about the show and the real world around it. This podcast keeps me company throughout my week and always helps me smile and laugh even when things are hard. Much love.

Such a cute and interesting way to rewatch with these ladies. Very informative and refreshing to feel like I’m rewatching with them! 😍

Keep me smiling, thinking, and laughing my a** off
I have loved Buffy since watching live when I was 12. I have a few friends that have loved the show and I’ve chatted and bonded with. But the 2 of you are so fun to listen to on your thoughts, sorry that I have came across it a little too late! Keep doing what your doing ladies you both have very insightful thoughts! And fun ones along the way that actually have me laughing out loud during work hahaha!

I love Buffy and I love listening to these wonderful people talk about the show. The jingles bring me so much joy!

    Wow wow wow
I started listening to this podcast in October and became quickly addicted. Jenny and Kristin are a remarkable duo who are engaging and entertaining at every point. I only wish I found them sooner, but I don’t know if I could have taken the agonizing wait for episodes. From their comedic recaps and catchy jingles, these ladies hit the target every time. Give them a listen, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

    More than 5 stars
I absolutely adore how much the hosts smash patriarchy of all varieties. The demon lizard kind, the floppy haired douche bag kind, the actual kind. It’s a bright shiny spot in a dark and gloomy world.

    Love
I’ve been listening to this podcast since it first aired and it just gets better. Jenny and Kristin are fantastic hosts and the songs at the end of every episode are fire. I’m a professional musician and prior to listening, I fully expected to hate on the music, but Jenny is brilliant. Thanks to J & K for all you do and for trying at every turn to do better and be better. Love you!

    Favorite Podcast Ever
I’ve been listening to this podcast for years and the care that is taken to put it together and build community is so beautifully queer. Thank you for being a reliable source of joy and laughter no matter what is going on in my life, the world, etc. Also the jingles are unmatched, no other podcast delivers quite like Buffering!

    So much fun!
This podcast is a great listen, and has really enhanced my experience rewatching Buffy. It adds so much depth and enjoyment to listen to Kristin and Jenny’s commentary, both in the funny moments and discussions of more serious topics. Being able to have fun while still pointing out problematic elements using things like 🌩the patriarchy🌩 jingle keeps this show relevant. Also, as a huge fan of wizard rock and other nerdy music, the songs, all beautifully crafted, just add ANOTHER level of appreciation for Buffy and the Buffering pod.

    Best podcast EVER
A true delight. I can’t wait for the Buffy prom in March. Highly recommend going back to the beginning and rewatching each episode followed by its BTVS episode. What a time to be alive. Thanks y’all!

    Less than 1 star
It would be nice if the show was hosted by two grown women instead of two people who make crude sexual references constantly. Not to mention your constant bashing of “the patriarchy.” Just imagine if you listened to a podcast that bashed the LGBT community in every single episode. One of the hosts thinks it’s okay to call your significant other “daddy” (which is incestuous) but thinks it’s inappropriate to call your actual parent “daddy” (which is pure parent/child love). By the way, your ep where you started out talking about the tribal land on which you live was a pathetic display of virtue signaling. Land wasn’t stolen, it was conquered. In fact, Spike explained this in one episode. Do better. Be better.

    A true delight
I love this podcast and the hosts, producers, and consultants so much! A good recap, great in-depth discussion, and some incredible guest hosts! Plus it helped me accept myself as being queer, so that was a neat bonus! 😂

    Wow!
What a sheer, unadulterated joy this podcast is! When you think you’ve found the absolute pitch-perfect Buffy podcast, which has the perfect blend of geek adoration and loving criticality, but THEN they start layering in sociopolitical commentary AND they change the podcast in real time to reflect social justice ideals - WHAT???!! Thank you for the glorious gift that is Buffering the Vampire Slayer <3 On top of being a long-time Buffy fan, I am also a psychologist who specializes in trauma, and the caring and insightful way you address mental health issues and trauma make my heart so very happy. I am on board for whatever you two plan to do once (gulp) the series reaches its finale - you WILL be continuing Buffering somehow, right??!!
  • GraceLizK
    Laughable feminists
I think it’s hilarious how you call yourself a feminist podcast yet fall all over yourselves over Spike. Every single thing Xander does, whether it’s breathing or having a thought you express nothing but disgust or disdain yet you describe nothing but sympathy for a literal attempted rapist and abuser like Spike. It’s clear your sexual attraction for the actor is why you have such a bias, but just admit then your own misogyny. You have the same view point towards another attempted rapist and murderer, Faith, and even create an imaginary lesbian relationship between the characters, but yet cannot stop screaming PATRIARCHY at everything Xander or Riley does, the only 2 human males who are actually decent people. Maybe take a step back and look at yourself and your own sexual bias.
