Micky_LiteMore please!!How I long for more episodes… this podcast scratches the ancient wisdom itch.

Ajax0012I used to love this show. It’s alright now but has lost my full admiration. I have issues with the show, but for the most part Jack does a good job and come into philosophical debates in good faith.

Call in the asipuThe dude asked for a rhyming reviewAncient Greece Declassified Is a bona fide wild ride Through ancient Grecian Time and tide. Try it. You’ll be glad you tried. I have not lied.

RobotMojoFantastic podcastIf you are interested in Ancient Greece history and philosophy this is a great show. Fantastic guests, insights as they relate to modern world, good depth into broad topics.

The Real Zen BoyUnlike any other history podcast……and I love it. I listen to a LOT of history podcasts; it’s probably my favorite genre. But I find this one very refreshing. It’s not a timeline podcast, instead he dives into subjects. But what really sets it above the others is the quality of his guests, the depth of coverage of the topic, and the novel ideas that are presented that really get the gears churning (to mix some metaphors). Whereas, I’m sure there are others that use this style, I find this one to be on a whole other level. Looks like the last episode was released in DEC 2023. I hope with all my heart that he is just taking a break and that he continues to produce quality content. Definitely a life enricher.

DigDug98Fantastic Podcast!I love all of the guests and experts Jack brings on. I’ve rediscovered my love for Greek culture and thought
-
Sandi O'BrienGreatI love the in depth interviews on special topics. I’ve listened to lots of general history podcasts that just give textbook summaries of battles and great men. This podcast goes into the weeds on big ideas of history and philosophy and really gets me thinking.
-
almennurPhilosophy in historical clothesA solid podcast but I feel like it switches from history to philosophy after the initial episodes and it’s never properly addressed. It’d be nice to avoid false advertisement.

AeburdaPlatoIf you want to get a grasp on Plato this is the place to go.
-
MathijßemVivid and thoroughThe host has a great ability to make points vivid to a contemporary audience. This is combined with scholarly rigor, often in the form of discussions with experts. Occasional disagreements aside (did Kant seek to argue for morality by pointing out positive consequences that come from it?), this is a very good podcast.
-
donc981Great platonic discussionsI love the interviews and discussions regarding Plato. Very informative and engaging

Steve at StarsendNever disappointed, always eager to hear moreAmong the several "ancient history" podcasts, this one really stands out. I usually start, having read the title and blurb, think, "I know about this..." Then I learn something new, often, often a lot that's new - to me. I wish I could mark this as a "most favorite" favorite.
-
JvgnzsablbGreat listeningLoved the recent Polybius episode, gave me a new appreciation. I’ve been listening happily since 2020 and embarrassingly am only now writing a review. Thank you!

DecaonSo well doneThere’s no short summary that can do justice to the outstanding podcast Jack delivers. Whether interviewing subject matter experts or flying solo, he’s always at the top of his game in every detail. I particularly enjoy the times when he challenges current orthodoxy relating to one of his subjects/topics.

UX_meMy fun pastimeHard to choose a favorite episode. After a hard day of work, this podcast is one of the ways I relax.
-
RWRyburnGreat show!Gets into the details and keeps it interesting!
-
BillorooGreat stuffA ton of really great stuff in this podcast. Way more than just history and very thought provoking, I’ve gone back and listened to many of the episodes multiple times. Thanks Jack!!
-
greenhill__Always a good timeI’ve listened to every single episode and I love this podcast. The person who left this podcast a 1 star for being “too progressive” is being ridiculous.
-
August ConsumerGreat for high schoolInebriated with their own convictions. Sadly, too adolescent for my taste. The comparison with the ancient Greeks to the Romans—“The Roman’s were engineers.” Even in my ignorance—so were the Greeks, and they were mathematicians and architects. There are better podcasts on the classics for me; the five stars are happy with this one—a matter of taste is not disputable. Plato discussions; organized and not lost in minutia and ambiguity.

Doc DenoonStrong InterviewsGreat insight into philosophy, amazing guests, and the host is a creative thinker worth hearing.

MaryMottBCan’t rhyme as well a Jack can……But more than the rhymes I value his clear discussion of the most complex and challenging ideas from the ancient texts. I learn so much from him and can’t wait for the next podcast!

SupernovifieDPassion + Knowledge = A great show!I was looking for a show about Greek mythology. I came across this show. And I’ve just been listening to it ever since then. I even have some thoughts on reading the republic! I loved how the host develops his arguments effectively. He is a professional. I hope this show just goes on forever.

PaintingFlowersWithKevinTimeless wisdomMore than just flyover of ancient history, Lantern Jack reveals the timeless mystery, that is relative to the real world today, in philosophy and play. And he likes rhymes too :-)
-
Mike_2020Makes ancient Greece accessible to allThis podcast makes ancient Greek literature and culture accessible and familiar. Without compromising the integrity of ancient Greek ideas, the host presents these ideas succinctly and allows the listener to place them in the context of the contemporary world. He does this primarily through well-thought-out interviews with experts on the most important thinkers of ancient Greece.

El Mateo 1047WHO THE F IS THIS GUY?Never reviewed anything before until I heard his instructions how to do so…. Never time to read a screen. L J….Why not introduce yourself in the 1st episode? I got here from your Scott Rank interview and have yet to go back. Since I’ve never read Homer, Plato etc I listen to each episode multiple times to digest. You’ve inspired me to buy cliff notes to Homer’s works and start there…. By the way, the main reason you grabbed my attention was your name similarity to your distant cousin…. Lantern Man and I hiked the PCT together way back in the day…. Anyway, I’m grateful for your show and the spark rekindled in me to learn. Action Man

HodgesebExcellent podcastI listen to Ancient Greece Declassified on a regular basis. Jack does a great job of demonstrating how the classics are relevant to today. I have particularly enjoyed his series on Plato’s Republic. Oh, also love the ending music.
-
LesionokSublime! This podcast is so awesome, it approaches the Platonic form of the good.
-
SimkhaA Nice Reprieve!I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts, so I enjoy when I get a new episode of Ancient Greece Declassified in my feed. I am not really knowledgeable about ancient Greece, but once I married my Greek spouse, I became a lot more interested. And while this is *ancient* Greece, not modern-day, I love the history, I enjoy to some extent the philosophy, and the intelligent questions from the host, along with the fascinating guests, add a lot to the mix.
-
larik_seaThis is dope! This podcast is dope! As someone who has very little exposure to philosophy or classics I found it very approachable and thought provoking! I came here for the Harry Potter reference but will stay for Plato’s Republic :)
-
Andrea 👻The RepublicLove the series on Plato’s republic! It’s like all the best parts of being in a college philosophy class.
-
senor memeGreeks Guts & GloryI really appreciate the diverse guests, and their unique input inside of each episode.

duped a littleWonderful podUsed to be a high/middle school Latin teacher and I miss being immersed in all things Greece and Rome. This pod has helped fill that void a bit and the expertise with which the topics are discussed is amazing. Thank you!

vanderschmootPodcastimux Maximus! TIf you want to hear some of the smartest peeps around speaking very intelligently about things they’re passionate about this is the podcast for you. The host is very engaging, fair and empirically minded. The guests are truly fantastic.
-
LexAmbrz12Wonderfully accessible! One of the best intros to ancient history I’ve ever listened to w the knowledge to engage the experts he brings to the table in ways a layperson can fully understand. Can make a discussion of Homer’s Iliad an edge of your seat experience and looks at history through many lens.
-
Andrew from New HampshireSuch great lore - ancient history bros GIHThis podcast does an excellent job making ancient history relevant to our own time. The host takes the time to give background and context to conversation. It’s simultaneously respectful of the audience’s intelligence and yet does not presume too much prior knowledge. Thanks a bunch!
-
GWillyDWow. If you thirst for knowledge of Ancient Greece...Tho is your podcast. The podcaster manages to find and interview experts on topics in what is a really unique way of sharing knowledge. Love it.
-
KomishanDiscusses modern relevanceThis podcost, hosted by a doctorate degree holder, discusses ancient Greek history and philosophy, usually with a guest professor or author. Each episode discusses both the history in its historical context but also how we can interpret it to apply to our modern times.
-
felix dlcAcademic in the best sense of the wordApproachable, thorough and nuanced.
-
Conrad C. S.GuestsThe guest are unparalleled! I wonder how he gets such a large amount of quality guest experts from such an array of Ancient Greek history sub-fields.
-
Latin teacherexcellent — comparable to BBC “In Our Time”Excellent. It resembles the longtime BBC radio/podcast with Melvyn Bragg called “In Our Time.” In this American podcast the well-prepared classicist host interviews an author/professor on some invariably interesting aspect of Homer, Hesiod, Greek tragedy, poetry or history. It’s like being in a good college class, but there’s very little academic jargon. The classical substance, the sources, the controversy if there is one — that’s what the show cares about.
-
FinftwSubscribe!Simply one of the best. Insightful expert conversation on a broad range of Ancient Greek topics.
-
Dj16slimClassicAlmost totally caught up now and very thankful for the podcast. Great info and I love the way he gives it to you
-
SEODRoExcellentDr. Jack has put together a very impressive podcast. If you have any interest in Classical and Ancient Greek history, philosophy, or literature, this will deliver. The show goes deeper into academic thought than the average history podcast but since all episodes I’ve listened to so far are conducted as interviews they lend a conversational tone to the topics that make them much more approachable even if you don’t have much in the way of knowledge on the subject. Highly recommend.
-
Mrj1981Fantastic showAncient Greece Declassified is a first-rate show about the world of ancient Greece. Rather than working through the history in a linear fashion, Dr Lantern Jack picks a different topic every episode and interviews someone who is at the cutting edge of that particular sub-discipline and really does a deep dive on that topic, in less than an hour. It is clear from listening that the host does a LOT of preparation; the questions are always thoughtful and intelligent and frequently get to the very heart of where the current academic discussion is taking place. The host is fantastic; the guests are fantastic; the discussion is fantastic. Very intelligent and erudite and yet also totally accessible to the layperson. What else could you possibly want in a podcast about the ancient world?
