Just What I Have Been Missing
I moved to the triangle from LA a couple years ago where I was really connected to the food industry and have really struggled to find that here in NC. This show gives me a sense of what I’ve been missing in how they talk inside baseball about the industry, weave connections between current and former guests, and dig deep into the stories of why people do what they do. It’s like having a local version of my favorite NPR show Good Food.

    Supporting F&B Employees
Thankful. As this pod continued to grow, I saw an even greater emphasis on the people of F&B in NC. Showcasing small businesses, entrepreneurs, producers, creators, servers, bars and restaurants means not just throwing love at venues but throwing respect and care for the people in the industry- from servers, bussers, barkeeps, BOH, farmers, product entrepreneurs, etc. Let’s keep the conversations going and building greater equity, living wage pay, small business and community support ! Well done y’all!

    What a great podcast!
I just finished listening to the December 10, 2020 podcast featuring author and ESPN personality Wright Thompson talk about his book “Pappyland”. What a fascinating conversation! It inspired me to buy and read the book. I definitely will be catching on the rest of your episodes!

    So helpful for a Newbie!
I love listening to the NC F & B Podcast when I’m making tons of salsa in the kitchen! As a newbie to the food scene in Raleigh it’s been so helpful to me as far as what it takes to run a business & the best food in NC. Thanks so much y’all for keeping me informed! Mama’s Salsa will pay a visit one day!💕🍅🌶🔥🥑

    Out-of-Touch and Homogeneous
The stated purpose of the F&B Podcast is to take listeners “behind the scenes to tell the stories of the people who contribute to the food and beverage industry of NORTH CAROLINA.” Obviously, the hosts know nothing about NC’s geography, culture, or people because after listening to every podcast from 9-19 through 11-19, I realized that every SINGLE INTERVIEW was conducted with someone representing urban NC (Charlotte, Asheville, etc.) and/or the greater Raleigh area (within 30 minutes of the city limits) and/or was Anglo. For the record, Eastern NC “contributes to the food and beverage industry of NC” too. Additionally, Eastern NC DOES have restaurants. Eastern NC DOES have wineries. Eastern NC DOES have culture. And IF you would occasionally leave your privileged urban bubble, you might actually realize that. Even the interview on “trusting your farmer” made NO attempt to find a representative from the eastern part of OUR STATE. Eastern NC is a beautiful place with wise and wonderful people, but we are hurting and, to make matters worse, we are often forgotten. Many of OUR state’s residents have never completely recovered from the devastation of Hurricanes Floyd, Florence, Dorian, and Matthew. In many places, our populations are declining. Many family farms have closed or have been gobbled-up by factory farms. Our small businesses are struggling and our small towns are becoming “health care deserts.” I bet you’d be shocked to learn that many pockets of eastern NC still don’t have cable or Internet access (for example, Greene County). Try starting or maintaining a small business without it. Additionally, in rural NC, public transportation is often nonexistent or very limited. Imagine the challenge of earning a college degree or keeping a job without reliable transportation. And yet you have chosen to focus ALL of your efforts on the very parts of the state where the industry, infrastructure, wide-spread public transportation, commerce, higher education, and political power are focused (and, as a result, inaccessible to practically everyone else). In addition to ignoring the folks of rural NC, how many people “of color” have been given the opportunity to be featured on your podcast? Don’t forget that they “contribute to the food and beverage industry of NORTH CAROLINA” too. Or did your elitist bubble keep you from realizing that fact as well? No matter what the cause for your narrow focus, SHAME ON YOU!!! Based on the preceding, I HIGHLY recommend that you A). Change your stated mission or B). Occasionally leave your elitist, urban bubble and spend time with some “real folks,” your “Eastern NC Cousins,” and with people who aren’t exactly “like you.” You will likely enjoy the experiences and may actually learn something in the process.

    Local foodie gem
If you’re into great food and wine, and hearing about local events, and from local chefs and sommeliers, you’re going to love this podcast! Just found them through the recommendation of my wine tasting host at a vineyard in Cali and I’m so glad I did! Getting to peer into the local food and beverage culture of the Carolinas — one that’s making a name for itself and putting itself on the map in the Gastronomy world — and getting and inside scoop is a real treat. Love what Max and Matt are doing for NC and our food culture here!

    Love the Insight!!
This show has evolved from two guys-in-a-room to speaking on a large scale with influential people in the industry. They have shifted to topics that really concern social issues but haven't lost sight of being fun in the process. We love to hear about food and wine, but also everything else in the process. Keep it up!

    Hosts talk too much!
I’ve tried to listen to a handful of episodes from this pod now, as there are always incredible guests on that I want to learn more about! Unfortunately, I can barely get through any full episodes. Reason being, I find it frustrating that the hosts - while they seem like nice guys - talk about themselves on long, unrelated tangents wayyy too much. The episodes feel like they’re more about the hosts with guests only having small interjections, vs the other way around - like it should be. I’d suggest taking some lessons from the ‘How I Built This’ podcast. It is a fantastic example of how to conduct an engaging and focused interview. Because let’s be real, that’s why everyone wants to listen to this NC F&B pod in the first place - to hear from the guest(s) being interviewed! Maybe you guys can let your subjects talk a bit more, while you lean back and simply ask leading questions without taking over the pod!? Two stars for quality guests.

    Great content
I love the content on this show but I wish the hosts would not interrupt their guests quite so much. There is rarely a good flow to the episodes bc the hosts talk too much and don’t let their guests finish their trains of thought.

    👍🏼👍🏼
This podcast is a great way to learn about the food service industry in the triangle. Even if you are from another region, there is much to glean from how notable restaurant and hospitality professionals reached success in chasing their dreams. Some particularly interesting interviews include Raleigh Raw, Bob Peters, and Matty Beason. North Carolina has a robust and innovative food scene and this podcast does much to help help generate support for it.
