Christmas Past

581

Behind every Christmas tradition is a story, often a forgotten one. Every year as we put up a tree and pour the eggnog, we’re continuing generations-old narratives, while being mostly unaware of their starting chapters.

Join Brian Earl to explore the fascinating stories behind the most wonderful time of the year. It's equal parts nerdy deep dive and warmhearted celebration. Think: NPR meets Clement Clarke Moore!

Christmas Past is one of the longest running Christmas podcasts, now in its tenth season. Vanity Fair says: "With excellent production, engaging narration, and short, digestible running times, Christmas Past is perfect to put on while decorating your tree or preparing Christmas dinner."

Brian's 2022 book, Christmas Past: The Fascinating Stories Behind Our Favorite Holiday's Traditions, is available in hardcover from Lyons Press and an audiobook from Recorded Books! Get your copy today wherever books are sold. And remember...it makes a great gift!

    Feel Good podcast
I love that the podcast isn’t too long and doesn’t have a lot of banter like many other podcasts. I wouldn’t change a thing!

    Bringing the light
Christmas of 2023 was my first experience with Christmas Past. I was feeling heavy with stress from not only the holiday but work and family. I felt that I was having a hard time with Christmas when a friend recommended. I try to find a podcast. I searched for Christmas and popped up Christmas Past. It is delightful and informative. It wasn’t too long whenever I was feeling stressed or overburdened. I could just take a small break. I didn’t have to worry about the content, not being appropriate for little ears. And I was never embarrassed when somebody asked. What are you listening to? I feel it helped me connect with the true meaning of the holidays. And more than once, I have been able to say “ I heard the most interesting thing about that topic on this podcast called Christmas past.” Thank you Brian, for lifting my load and bringing some light to the world. My Favorite Christmas Podcast
I’ve been a listener of Christmas Past since 2019 and have come back for it year after year. As a lover of history, I appreciate how Brian curates historical content with the Christmas season, helping us explore all its rich layers of culture and tradition. This podcast never fails to foster that warm and nostalgic feeling I am blessed to enjoy this time of year. May we never take Christmas for granted, and may God bless us, every one!

    The best Christmas podcast!
This is my 4th or 5th Christmas listening to Christmas Past podcast. I love the variety of content and how it’s presented along with the music and listener stories. I recommend to my brother who drives 3 hours back and forth during the Christmas holidays. Although I love this for me, it would be nice to have a family version I could listen to with my kids. Thanks Brian!

    Comforting, heartwarming
I love this podcast! I have recommended it to my family for some wonderful holiday listening! I’m actually starting from the beginning and trying to go through all the episodes. I also love the host’s voice. His voice is very comforting and pleasant. It’s my go-to in the holiday season!

The best of the holidays in a podcast.
Do you love Christmas? Not as much as Brian Earl. His podcast brings a serious but light-hearted review of all things Christmas. Be careful tho… listen to one episode and you will run out of room on your device because you gotta hear all the episodes. I love this series. Are you a fan of “Christmas Past” already? Buy his book so that you can read his podcast anywhere you go. Download this podcast!!! Oh! “May your days be merry and bright!”

Great listen to ramp up your Christmas Spirit
I love listening to this during the Holiday Season. It’s great to have on while wrapping presents, baking or shopping. The stories and history helps move me along, keeps me entertained and fills me with Christmas joy as i trod along doing all the things I need to do during Christmas.

    Start at the Very Beginning
This is my absolute favorite Christmas podcast, and I am something of a Christmas nut. I've made Christmas movies as a producer, written Christmas children's books as an author, and created Christmas-themed children's charities. Each year - and not just during the holidays - I zip back to the very first episodes of Christmas Past to hear well researched Christmas legends, along with some fantastic trivia. The Rudolph episode blew my mind. Brian is the perfect host. His sensibilities, tenacity, and even the tone of his voice make my podcast-listening day Merry and Bright. 10/10 recommend

    Always enjoyable!
Brian brings so much to this podcast. Origin stories of all things Christmas, wonderful old stories perfectly read for you to enjoy by a fire with cocoa or to fall asleep to in your kerchief. Shared memories from other listeners and fun interviews with other Christmas podcasters and authors. And if that wasn’t enough - lists of Indy holiday music to explore and possibly add new favorites to your holiday play list. It’s a true labor of love and Brian’s enthusiasm is evident in every episode. I know you will come to love and enjoy Christmas Past as much as our family. Happy Holidays to all.

    Christmas Magic!
I just wanted to let you know that I recently discovered your podcast and I am really enjoying it. I have been listening to a lot of these at work and it really makes the time go by. I especially enjoyed the one about the Christmas wish books. Brought back a lot of memories. Keep up the great content and Merry Christmas!

Brian Earl podcast is one of the best. Voice is clear, background music is perfect. I’ve been listening to this podcast since last year and love the history behind anything christmas. I love listening to Christmas experiences at the end of every show. Can’t wait for the new season!

    Christmas Story Fun
After hearing this podcast referenced over and over again on the Deck the Hallmark and Christmas Morning podcasts, I finally decided to give this one a chance this past Christmas season. It was a great decision. I really enjoy the Story time episodes and always enjoy learning something new. Looking forward to another season!

    Good content
Overall very good. The technique if having the guest speak and then announcing “that was John Snith” gets tiresome. The use of “BCE” to mark time before Christ is offensive especially for a Christmas show. That is disappointing. But overall an enjoyable listen.

    Absolutely fantastic!
My bride and I have listened since the first year this wonderful podcast came out and it is a Christmas time tradition for us to listen to each episode, usually listening in on older episodes as well during our numerous trips in the season. Brian Earl does an incredible job of bringing the history of the season and research we love to hear. Bought the book last year and read it again this year as well as recommended it to our family and friends. Just fantastic!

    What a gift!
This is from 2020 — I guess I never hit “Send!” ‘Christmas Past’ is well-researched, produced, and presented, and it had given me hours of listening pleasure this Christmas as I’m stuck in quarantine away from my family in my own house and hoping my COVID test comes back negative so I can join them Christmas Day. In any case, it answers a lot of questions that have popped into my mind each Christmas and which I never have the time to follow up on due to the hustle and bustle — sugar plums? Why Mistletoe? Who tells ghost stories at Christmas? I guess one positive of being in quarantine is that I can find the answers through this excellent podcast and also reflect on what is TRULY important at this, my favorite time of the year! Thanks, Brian Earl, for such a treasure to perpetuate the beauty of this season!

    A trip to the past!
I do so love the details you emphasize and HOW you emphasize them for effective communication. Excellent background music and additional conversation. History, mystery, and faith rebuilding. A bit of a trip around the world in unity! Thank you, team.

    Christmas Past
My family has always been great believers in old family Christmas. This show brings so much of that feeling to me. That Christmas feeling is just enhanced by your show. Now that I have my first granddaughter I hope I can instill that feeling in her. This year has had some sadness though the lose of my mother in law and my father. I hope their spirit of the season can be felt ball season. Thank you Brian

    Brilliant podcast
I’ve been listening for the last three Christmas seasons and love it. The seven fishes episode was great. I grew up in an Italian-American family and fish was a staple—the only thing—served on Christmas Eve. We had smelts, linguine in clam sauce, and white fish. The whole house smelled of fish for the next week. Thank you for explaining that tradition. I never understood why we did it.

    Wonderful, festive podcast!
I found Christmas Past when I searched for “holiday” podcasts and I am so, so happy I did. Brian Earl is warm, funny, and I genuinely feel like I’m sitting around a fire with an old friend talking about Christmas traditions from around the world. When I was listening to today’s Christmas Day episode and heard Brian explain some of the difficulties he’s gone through in her personal life, yet still managed to create this beautiful season, I knew I had to stop what I was doing and write a review. I know this will be a part of my Christmas traditions, and I look forward to sharing this sweet podcast with my family and friends. Thank you, Brian, and may your days be merry and bright!

I had no idea you were having challenges personally and I really hope that you’ll be OK if this podcast helps you I think you should continue if it needs to take a break that’s OK too. just don’t lose your Christmas spirit. Part of my Christmas tradition
Listening to this podcast has been such a pleasant part of my Christmas season the past couple of years—many thanks! This year I especially enjoyed the Wish Book episode, and out of curiosity I checked the website in the show notes and found the FAO Schwartz wishbook I pored over in the sixties when I was about 7. I was amazed to see again the (rather extravagant) toy I got that year—a woodland treehouse full of Stief stuffed animals. I still have a few of them!

    My favorite podcast ever!
Brain Earl really puts time in to his episodes, and it really shows. I love listening to your work in the car whether in is on the way to school, or after a long day. I appreciate how he really connects with his viewers in each show. Brain also does a great job of keeping his shows interesting. I have a short attention span, and I am sure others do too. I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the Christmas season, and that Brain continues to do what he is doing because it is awesome. My address is 4624, Blossom View Ct. NE, Cedar Rapids IA 52411

    Enhancing your Christmas spirit
Was turned to the podcast but the release of the book. Without a doubt the best Christmas podcast! Seeing the first podcast drop in October I knew it was time to get excited! Love the podcast and I re- listen all year to keep the spirit alive

Thank you for Helping my Christmas Magic each year!
Christmas is by far my favorite time of year and I enjoy history and genealogy things in my spare time so it feels as though this podcast was made for me! I listen every year and every episode to hear new stories and historical context about favorite traditions and the traditions of others! I love learning about how the celebration of Christmas has evolved throughout the years! My only request is longer episodes! This year the Christmas magic has been a little herder to find so I wanted to say thank you Brian Earl for making it a little easier to find this year!
  • The1JD
I only wish the episodes were longe. Lol
I love the history, nostalgia and learning about other people’s traditions. Perfect listening for the holidays and the whole year.

    What Christmas Means to me?
Christmas Past highlights the history, folklore, and connections we make with one another. It really gets to the point of the human condition. How we come together to survive, persevere, and find joy. Brian presents all of this in a format that I think can be best described as “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” Obviously I appreciate it as a Christmas lover, but he also has a gift for exceptional interview flow, historical framing, and storytelling in a way that takes the listener on a true journey. I truly can’t decide my favorite episode type, from interview, historical deep dive, literature readings, etc. Some years it’s difficult to get in the “Christmas Spirit” but Christmas Past is always reliable. I’m so relieved every year when I see that Brian is keeping the tradition alive.

A thoughtful and fun approach to the season
I discovered this podcast last year while looking for a series that was enjoyable and appropriate for my tween son. He’s a big Christmas fan and this fit the bill. He listened through all the back episodes last year and anxiously awaits the new ones. I’ve enjoyed it as well, and we find ourselves sharing the things we’ve learned with friends and family. This series is interesting and informative yet doesn’t take away from the magic that is Christmas. Highly recommend for just about everyone! (though you might want to pre-screen for young ones that are still Santa believers).

    Timeless Quality
The podcast is full of wonderful backstories to so much of the Christmas lore. If you’ve ever wondered “WHY something is part of a song?” or “WHERE did that come from?” Then this is the podcast for you! Brian has the knowledge, guests and creativity to make every episode feel informative and merry. He adds such a personal touch to each show. Enjoy!

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” - Wm. Faulkner
This show is earnest, educational, wholesome, excellently-prepared, and delivered with a plain spoken respect for our past. Thank you Brian Earl for your amazing dedication and work. In this generation that’s only beginning to realize its need for elders, this show is a kind of nourishment for the soul.

Such a fun and informative show.
I came upon this podcast while looking for Christmas topics and have not been disappointed. The information is shared in a "Have you ever wondered…" kind of way. It satisfies the curiosities one may have about things like the 12 days of Christmas or popcorn tins but it also covers nostalgia on things like Christmas crackers or department store wish books. Glad to have found it!
