Very Random Encounters: Chaotic Improv Actual Play

Improv #163

Welcome to Very Random Encounters, a show where we play pen and paper RPGs in which we've randomly determined as many things as is possible, including characters, villains, names, places, and other weirder stuff! It all comes together to be a very random encounter. We're an actual play roleplaying game podcast by four friends who love the challenge of telling a story whose details are all prompted by random rolls. You can start with the first episode in any given season.

    Absolutely incredible! Been loving it!
I only just recently started watching VRE, and yet I instantly admired the show and was so excited during every episode! To the acting, the DMing, music, and more, VRE has done an amazing job at entertaining all of us! Thanks for everything that you do!

    Stories that captivate your imagination
Fall in love with new characters every season. The range these actors have is extraordinary. The show has wonderful sound quality and skilled editing. They don’t over cut the show, allowing audiences to enjoy banter between friends, occasional pet shenanigans, and giggle worthy bloopers. Thanks for an amazing show VRE❣️

    Oh No! I Ran Out!!
I have been listening to your podcast since near the beginning of the pandemic, and loving every second of it!! I started from the beginning and when you guys did the superhero characters I knew I was hooked. Reel me in! But seriously, I love the work you do, I have loved watching all of you grow as actors, improvisers, players, and people. I have been thrilled to see your inclusivity and the sensitive approach you take to pronouns. You guys have been a great example of what normalizing inclusivity should mean. (Also, Wheels, great choice in the name. You and me, sib. Love the wheels.) Anyway I finally came to the most recent episode which was a shock, but a pleasant one. I will look forward to waiting along with your more experienced fans for the wonderful, creative content you put out. THANKS FOR THE GREAT SHOW!!

    A wonderful and chaotic time
Going in I was a bit hesitant about how they’d play randomized characters but every season has fully realized characters created and played with love.

    A Lifetime of Stories
I found my way to VRE through the Moonshot network and Wheels’s podcast, “Got it Memorized?” I was a huge Final Fantasy X fan and when I heard Joe and Wheels’s rendition of ‘1000 Words’ from FFX2, I had to see what else they’d done. And I came here and I’m so glad I did. I have finally caught up after listening to this podcast on every stroller walk, late night wake up and long car ride with my one year old daughter. I’ve literally been listening to you all for her entire life and I feel like that’s really special. My favorite season was HellaTeam but everything that y’all do is magic. Keep up the good work and I’m so glad I randomly encountered you. I even use your book when I DM!

The best way to spend my summer
I work driving for a delivery app and started listening in early summer 2022. I just got all caught up in October. This is the best way I could possibly think of to pass my working hours. The plots are crazy, the characters are random, and the cast is genius. Thank you for making one of the best podcasts I’ve ever had the pleasure to listen to. I can’t wait to hear more!

    Meet the Cast!
“Fishy” Lee! “Rock Star” Logan! “Not Travis” Wheels! And “The GL”, Greg Leatherman! All three of them come together for a very great time! Please give a listen! P.S. You should probably change Travis to Wheels in the part where it lists your names. Hopefully you know what I mean.

    Very Awesome Encounters
Took a bit of a weird road to get here: Interstitial to Got it Memorized to VRE, but I'm glad I did. I was hesitant at first becasue I thought the shorter seasons and randomness would make the show lack the depth of other APs I've listened to, but I'm glad I put that hesitancy aside. The randomness, in combination with the supreme talents of the cast, bring about some of the deepest and most compelling character arcs that I've run into in any RPG podcast. Each season tells compelling stories with characters who grow, change, and learn, rather than just staying static archetypes. Favorite Season-Wheels's Fellowship Season Favorite Character Arc-Greg's repentant general in the Root season Favorite Song-Logan's first song in the Marvel Super Heroes Season (I can't remember the name of the song offhand), but Reciepts Merle is also pretty awesome Favorite PC-So hard to choose, but I've got to go with Lee's Deep One character from the Horror season.

The Rolls are Randomized, but it’s no coincidence that this show is amazing!
Listen to the show if you enjoy works like Trials of The Apocalypse! It’s all great, and the only thing for sure is that one of them is a fish, and all of them are excellent!

Completely random but beautifully acted out
The gimmick of the randomness draws you in but the engaging and compelling story telling keeps you coming back for more. No matter your background they have content you can relate to. As an ace person myself it was wild to see it represented. You will never run out of laughter, tears, and gripping drama in this show.

Not Every Podcast Can Be Special, but This One Is
I started listening to this podcast at random, appropriately enough, but it quickly grew on me. The cast does an amazing job taking would could be random nonsense and turning into relatable characters, hilarious situations, and sometimes even touching drama. It's a great overall fun, inclusive experience that has beome the one thing on Mondays I actually look forward to.

Not every review is destined for greatness
I love the amount of “real vibes” your podcast has . Not only for taking on modern problems in a fun easy to digest way, but staying away from the meta game and playing your characters how you think they should be played based in information you didn’t even get to decide.

    Greatness
Every episode opens with “not everyone is destined for greatness,” but these four certainly are. Not only do they come up weigh randomly creative and adaptive stories with fantastic chemistry between each other, they introduce nerds like me to rpg’s that I never would have found otherwise. I cannot stress enough how important this podcast is for the roleplaying community. You all are amazing and thank you for everything you do.

    Universal Truth
This podcast has helped me except that no matter where, when, or what, all across the multiverse one thing is static: American south accents. Heaven is a lot like Dixie.

Genuinely the Best TTRPG Podcast Around!
Not much to be said here that hasn’t been said already! The cast is as talented and synergetic as they come stringing together near flawless stories on the fly. The premise of “randomize everything possible” is truly a captivating one. If you or a friend is wanted to get into TTRPGs start here. You cannot go wrong with this inclusive and fun show! TL;DR: Listen to this show!

    best! show! ever!
After finally getting up to date with VRE, I feel qualified and obligated to tell anyone I come into contact with that this show is a must-listen!! Logan, Lee, Wheels, and Greg each bring so much to the table- and together they make a brilliant team that handles anything the dice throw at them in a way that has made my spirits soar and my heart ache. Especially as a young queer person, being able to see myself represented in stories that I love is the greatest gift I could ever ask for! Very Random Encounters has been my rock over the last few months, and every episode leaves me so excited for what's to come. Keep up the amazing work!!!

    Just what I needed
This is the type of podcast I needed in my life. I’ve never played a tabletop rpg before but have recently gotten into tabletop podcasts and the concept of randomized elements is super satisfying. Just binged the whole first season in a day and am looking forward to listening further. This is the first podcast I’ve ever checked out where I didn’t know any of the hosts prior to listening and have to say I was not disappointed.

    Very Remarkable Entertainment
I’m now on my second listen of every season of VRE, and the cast never cease to amaze with each new season and relisten. Every season showcases their remarkable talents for storytelling and improvisation, all while navigating a very random world. VRE also does a fantastic job of having amazing queer characters that are in-depth characters first and queer second, something that few shows of any kind do well. They’ve made me laugh, they’ve made me cry, and I cannot wait to hear what they come up with next!

    Adventure, humor, & heartache
VRE is a show I recommend with only the highest amount of enthusiasm and fondness. Each player (and each GM) brings chaotically good energy to each season, and I find myself laughing audibly during my listens. The story arcs are weird and wonderful, and amidst all the adventure and camaraderie, the group boldly addresses painful and all too real themes such as oppression, fear, family trauma, and loss. It feels healing to have these difficult topics faced with such nuance and positive intention. Save up a few to listen to! They’re great for keeping you company during solitary activities-it feels like you have old, familiar friends playing tabletop games right behind you while you work/cook/drive/make art/etc. Enjoy!

    Gotta love VRE
These people have a great dynamic. They always find new ways to make you laugh, think, and sometimes cry. I highly recommend.

    A must listen
This show is absolutely delightful. Wonderful folks creating wonderful stories. To honor them here are some randomly created sentences-- The office of the Wild. The first one is the most important. I will have to be the best way to get the most popular. We will see the cute little claymation guy who is the sweetest of them all.

    My favorite podcast
The randomness makes every season so unique and fun to listen to. The whole crew seem to be amazing people and their friendship keeps me coming back!

    Great Content, Great Cast
They’re a dynamic quartet that can “yes and” each other into surprisingly compelling and emotional stories. Try it out for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

    This cast is awesome!!
I started listening to Fellowship after hearing Travis GM the second season of Interstitial. The cast of Very Random Encounters is so wonderful! They make you feel like you are at the table playing with them! I’m going to be sad once I catch up with everything they’ve put out, but at the same time glad that I will be able to here them play a little more every week! Keep up the good work!

    Incredibly Talented Roleplayers
This podcast is amazing. Every person involved is incredibly talented and creative; this group crafts interesting, collaborative stories that are extremely engaging. You can tell how much work and heart goes into each episode and it is a joy to listen to. It's also really great because you can tell how much the cast respects each other and makes sure that everyone is comfortable with what is going on and the choices they're making. Would definitely recommend to anyone even remotely interested in listening to an AP.

    Always a randomized blast
Very Random Encounters is such a wholesome show. I tuned in for the odd premise and stayed for the friendship, inclusion, and unexpectedly touching stories. They’re an amazing group of friends that makes everyone feel welcome regardless of social standing, orientation, preferred magical training, or planet of origin. They always do such an amazing job and I look forward to each episode.

It’s a long one folks, but I gotta
I have not marathoned a tabletop rpg podcast that is as long as this one is since I listened to taz balance back when it was first airing. This sounds and feels like a group of friends with a lot of talent playing a ttrpg. I’m always impressed by the directions they go in, and legitimately want to have these folks at a table that I play with since I feel like I would learn a thing or five. I found this podcast thanks to interstitial and have been grateful ever since. I love that the podcast is well produced without being over produced, if that makes sense? I’ve had to drop ap pods in the past due to that, or due to their humor not meshing with mine. The four of them have extremely kindhearted humor and tell stories that I love to read and write about. I always get so extremely giddy by the representation they have in games and legitimately seek out games with lgbt players, and I’ve definitely found a winning one this time. I always make fanenby(get it, like fanboy/girl?) noises when one of the pcs is nonbinary. Thank u so much for letting me see myself in media that I enjoy. I honestly am not sure I can pick a favorite season right now and could probably go on for several paragraphs what I liked in all of them. Thank u for being so rad and for also replying to me on discord I really appreciate having this kind of interaction with people I honestly respect. Thank u so much!!!!

    An Incredible Podcast!
Not every podcast is destined for greatness but this one sure is. Welcome to Very Random Encounters, a show where the cast makes hilarious content in which they do an amazing job at more things than should be possible including character conversations, character decision making, campaign creation, and other “I’m Greg” stuff. It all comes together to be a really amazing podcast. If you are a fan of podcasts that the cast really cares about than this one is for you.

    Best show ever!!
I was searching for a new podcast after I caught up with the d&d podcast I was listening to and I stumbled across an article mentioning a bunch of podcasts, including this one, I tried them all out, but this one has to be my favourite with all its wacky randomness that comes together coherently to make a very random encounter.

A bingeworthy podcast worth going back to
I’ve listened to almost all of the seasons multiple times. I love that every time I return to this show I pick up different parts I missed before. I listen to podcasts a lot to keep my mind occupied when I’m doing something repetitive and I can’t get enough of the chemistry between these 4. All of their seasons are unique and I love watching the improv skill as they have to adapt to all of the random elements. I can’t recommend it enough.

    Something Special!
What can I say about VREs that hasn’t been said before? It’s my favorite podcast and this is from someone who has never had fun with those types of roleplaying games. That someone like me would find themselves listening to, and enjoying, a show about people playing a roleplaying game that’s when you know you have something special.

Idk what my username is so pretend it’s CoolAudino
There’s nothing I can say about this podcast that hasn’t been said before, so instead I’m gonna fill this review with puns and jokes I think my friend is secretly adding glue to my weapons collection. He denies it, but I’m sticking to my guns I hate those people who knock on your door and tell you you need to get “saved” or you'll “burn” Stupid firemen. Not all math puns are funny just sum If smoking is really THAT bad then why does it cure salmon?

    Do Your Ears A Favor
Having listened to several of their campaigns throughout several RPGs (and D&D), VRE Cast is one of the best shows out there. Greg is a deft GM who allows the players to develop and push the story in a direction that works for them but can still stitch together meaningful moments. Lee, Logan + Travis are absolute delights - they lean into the flaws of their characters and deliver real performances (even though the meta-gaming will make ya snicker). This podcast is a soft blanket I look forward to wrapping around myself on regular basis. Caveat: I was a guest on a mini-series. But I’m talking about ALL THE REST of their magic.

Sad I can't listen to current season
The first season is probably my favorite thing in any podcast I have come across. It was so...off... but in a good way. They do some awesome stuff on the show, but one thing I really like is the GM tends to say "I think you do X" so then there is a prompt if the player wants to go a different direction but it is a collaborative story told together. I can't listen to the current season because the theme song is discordant enough that if I miss the fast forward, it gives me a 2hr headache but can't wait to pick it up again after they are done.

    Best podcast
Started listening on long car rides and this podcast is such a great thing to listen to. I only joined when you guys were doing Uncharted world and heard everyone talk about how good D&D season was so I decided to listen to it. It was honestly one of my favorite seasons right behind D6 Hella Team (I liked the idea of the season). I have searched far and wide for podcast like this and I can’t find any other. This is one of a kind and I will always listen to it.
  • Dyskko
    Great Character Driven Stories
I’m impressed and inspired by how committed everyone is to making their characters live. In other games, even players who choose traits for a character don’t seem to know as much about them as these players know about theirs.

This is my new favorite podcast! I can’t stop listening to the Tales from the Loop series you are doing. The characters are complex, deep, and lovable (something I didn’t expect considering their randomness). I love listening to you all and I catch myself listening along often!

    It’s Real Good!
This podcast is by far my favorite. The cast has an unparalleled talent for creating thought-provoking plot lines, lovable characters, and quick witted humor that causes erupting laughter in public places. It definitely will influence my gameplay forever.

    Purely Random = Purely Delightful
A wonderful blend of goofiness, fun, and surprisingly complex characters. The cast does an incredible job adding depth and life to the randomness they create. Pair this with their great voice acting (and charming banter) to create one of the best roleplaying podcasts out there! Definitely my favorite!

I listened to your ravnica story as Boros and I absolutely loved it.

    Random everything; Awesome results!
The fact that the cast consistently succeeds in creating not only a fascinating story, but also thriving unique characters, that are exciting, original, and touching - all out of randomness - is a testament to their astonishing skills and talents.

    New to the show.
Just Found the show very randomly and been hooked ever since. Keep up the great work gang. Look forward to listening to many more adventures.

    Very RAD Encounter
Excellent podcast with four great friends just having fun and playing games. It's full of fun, emotions, tense moments, jokes, a surprising amount of fish-people, and a flawless Pete Townshend impersonation. Everyone does their best to weave a story for the listener around random dice rolls, but without sacrificing any of the silliness that comes with. The only thing that isn't random is how much you will enjoy it.
  • Kalena941
    Very fun encounters!
The randomness is a fun element, but everyone is so funny together and it's fun to hear them go through the different games!
  • Reflex240
    A favorite with my friends!
I started listening to this after hearing about it on another podcast. As soon as I listened to the first season I had to tell everyone I played rpgs with about it, now we all love it!! One of my friends even cried at the end of season 1, quite the feat for a randomly generated world!
