Cold Case Files

7,125
All Genres #191True Crime #45

Based on the iconic, Emmy-nominated series on A&E, this show explores some of the most difficult-to-solve murders, which stymied investigators and went cold, sometimes for decades. In fact, one-third of all murders in America remain open. But thanks to dogged investigators and breakthroughs in forensic technology, these cases become part of the rare 1% of cold cases that are ever solved. Cold Case Files is hosted by Paula Barros.

Too many non cold case podcasts
Too many non cold case podcasts. Literally there was an episode about anime? I’m still subscribed hoping it will get better (like it used to be), but if this is how it’s going to be from now on, you’ll be losing a lot of subscribers!

    Brooke Gittings unlistenable
She reads her text in bizarre three second bursts with little pauses for no reason, and her writing is at 5th grade level.

    Reading
You can tell she’s just reading and there is no inflection in her voice. Kind of monotone. Do like the stories just not the boring voice. I believe it’s Brooke that is just reading and we don’t need her personal opinions.

    Used to be good
Since Brooke gittings doesn’t host this podcast the show drastically went downhill now the most recent episode is talking about anime and who decided to add I survived its time to unfollow now

    That voice grates.
The hosts’ voices all sound similar but, for some reason, that Brook’s voice grates. Her seemingly self importance, injecting her hopes, fears, and know-it-all “experiences” makes it all the more annoying. Nearly every time I hear “I’m Brook”, I skip. I think the reason the original was so successful was Bill Cutis’ soothing voice. Paula does a great job, the others, excepting Brook, do a decent job.

Love the *actual* Cold Case Files podcasts. Soooo sick of them playing things that aren’t CCF, which I believe is just to keep people listening. Some of us already subscribe to other podcasts (ie I Survived) and don’t need the exact same podcast twice in one week. Stick to what you’re supposed to be playing.

    Much better
The new host is so much better. I can actually listen again!

    Good podcast
Far too many commercials! They are back to back to back. Ugh. But the podcast is great otherwise.

    Two too many
Four commercials under an hour is just too many

    Not my favorite at all
I started watching the shows a few years back and was so excited when I saw there was a podcast about two years ago. Bill Curtis 11/10 has the best delivery, best voice, and doesn’t give opinionated commentary. The other two hosts aren’t that bad but they talk with no emotion, and way too many opinions that honestly we don’t need or care about. Also the “I survived” episodes should be a separate show completely. They are NOT cold cases and have no real connection to the show or podcast. If you want to put out more content I suggest making episodes for cold cases that haven’t been solved yet. But a series where people survive bad situations ain’t it

    Narrator. Ugh.
The narrator. She’s as dry as toast. She just reads and no personality is present when she does so. I find myself not hearing much of the podcast because her vocal manner bores me so much. Too bad. I always loved Bill Kurtis. Why can’t they get someone like him to narrate the content of this podcast? Someone who can hold the listeners’s attention!

    Love Cold Case Files, but…
Updated 5 March ‘24 to add: I don’t mind the new narrator (I like her voice better than Paula’s), but the quality of the audio of her segments is not great. Lots of hiss, feels like a low bitrate or something. The interview segments are fine so I know it’s not my connection. Thank goodness that extra content has been nixed! — I don’t mind Brooke’s narration (I was a listener of her other podcast, and I like her voice better than the new gal) and am amused at the array of adjectives that she uses to describe the legendary Bill Kurtis… but what is up with the extra content lately tacked at the end? Twice as long as the episode itself! And no information in the show notes. I skip over it.

    Tired of the I survived
I enjoy the series but only the cold case files. I can’t consistently listen to stories of women being brutally SA’d. Maybe have a separate feed for the I Survived series.

    Reruns
My only complaint is the constant reposting of the I Survived stories. I love them but it is not necessary to repost them. If you don’t have another one ready just say that.
  • JennyLooHoo74
    Eh…
Please, please, please take some radio broadcast speaking lessons or something. Narrator speaks to fast, mumbles, and drops ‘t’s. Sloppy as all get out.

Bill Kurtis episodes 👍🏻, others 👎🏼
The older episodes, which were professionally produced for TV and hosted by Bill Kurtis are great. The other two hosts, however, leave a lot to be desired. Brooke was the original replacement for Bill Kurtis, then there was another host briefly, then Brooke again. Both of the replacement hosts aren’t really worth listening to in my opinion. In particular, Brooke, who is a social worker without any type of background as a psychiatrist or psychologist or whatever, really expresses her personal opinions about the subpar mental health system in the US and even goes into deep dives on racial injustice and a myriad of topics that aren’t necessarily germane to the case that is being covered. She is obviously entitled to her personal opinion, but if she is representing A&E, then they need to rein her in. If she wants to host her own podcast to express her opinion like every other jamoke out there, then she should do that. However, for the A&E podcast, she needs to refrain from trying to make it the Brooke Show. I was following this show for several years, but I’ve now unfollowed it due to poor replacement podcasts and because the “I Survived” episodes are trash

    The writing is poop
I love the show but the writing is complete dog turds. She will be reading, make a statement then a question like she’s asking the listeners, almost asking to have the audience convinced.
  • The Ciceronian
ok if Bill Curtis is narrating
If Brooke is narrating, you might as well turn it off. Apart from the monotonous delivery, you’re treated to Brooke’s smug, self-righteous preaching with which she judges everyone’s attitudes and comments by her own infallible moral compass. You can tell she completed a social work degree, which in the U.S. is an indoctrination program. I can’t even.
  • Teresa 103
    NO MORE BROOKE.
Her monotone voice is unbearable. And her latest kick of going on and on about mundane facts, such as how one reacts to cocaine (we’re all well aware! 🙄) is obnoxious and I skip over it. Get a new host or only play Bill Curtis.
  • Moonflowerkl
    Delivery
Wow, have a few commercials!! I wish the woman who narrates these episodes would learn the difference between just saying all the words as fast as she can, and developing a more professional way to deliver the words. A slower pace and better enunciation. It takes practice and objectively listening to herself.

    Terrible
The host, Brooke, is AWFUL. It’s like listening to someone hosting their high school radio station. The insane amount of intrusive commercials that literally interrupt the show in mid sentence and run throughout the episodes were the final straw. I love Cold Case Files the show, but I’m noping out on this amateurish incarnation.
  • Mcla83
    Repeats
Why are all of these episodes repeats? Even the “new” episodes are old ones that have been reopened. I’m not a fan of constant repeats! What is going on?

    👎🏻 to I Survived
I don’t enjoy the I Survived stories. I listened to one or two, but no more. They are not as polished and well done as CCF. Please don’t include them in this podcast. I just skip over them. Thank you.
  • TekDragon68
    Used to be decent
This used to be a decent podcast. Now half the episodes are “I Survived” theses pods have nothing to do with the original podcast. The rest of them are Reopened and some are read by the host. She sounds like she is reading from a script and is totally bored. There are still way too many ads for a podcast that is a highly condensed version of the original.
  • Jdd415
    Great stories
Keep them coming, very interesting. Glad all these people survived.

    Awful
If you like commercials this is the podcast for you. More commercials than podcast!!!!!!!!

    Stick to the CCF
No more I Survived stories. The Cold Case Files are why I started listening to the podcast. I loved the tv show when I was younger and love listening to stories re-told in the pod. I Survived is completely different. Those stories are not the same as CCF. Please stop including them in the podcast.
  • gwengrose
    Cold Case Files only 😒
I really like listening to the cold case files, but I cannot listen to the “I Survived” pods. Since when did we start adding the “I survived” pods to the Cold Case? Combining two demographics isn’t working.
  • Justbgreen
    Too Many Ads
Lots of ads in the podcast, even ones narrated by the narrator without them announcing it’s an ad.
  • Liciapru
    Sacrilege
Cold Case Files with Bill Kurtis helped create the 'true crime' genre (so cringe just writing that). Unfortunately, shows like this, Ashley Flower's stuff, and others.. they aren't even in the same genre anymore. The tone is too casual, the research too cursory, and the narration- well, I'll end it there.
  • AlliV2023
    Love/hate
I love A&E and I love true crime; however, I cannot get past the male narrator and his “announcer voice”. I had to stop listening to the podcast because of it. Besides that, episodes are very well done.

    The kachava ads!!!
Love cold case files but I can’t handle six ads in one break 3 being the exact same! It’s terrible! I can’t listen to more than one episode at a time.

    Sliding downhill
UPDATE: The butter has finally slid completely off the toast. The show has tumbled down and down and dowwwwn the gutter and has finally been fired out the spout and onto the ground below. The new host was pretty good, at first. But now, it seems they've completely run out of content and Fs to give and have just COMPLETELY CHANGED THE SHOW. It is no longer Cold Case Files. It is now some dump truck fire called “I Survived.” RIP Cold Case Files. UPDATE: Thank god for the new host and new format. This show was in absolute desperate need of change. I’m happy to have Brooke out of my life for good. Welcome, Paula! UPDATE: Cold Case is just releasing old content and hoping nobody will notice. If they can’t produce new content, they should just call it quits. UPDATE: Down the hill we go! And, down to a Two Star rating, instead of the Three I originally gave. Sad, considering the objective true crime content of this show is actually fantastic. The ad situation is about the same as previously mentioned, except now they’re advertising for a psychic service. Yeah, that’s right, a podcast devoted to true crime and often times, the scientific methods used to solve cold cases is now advertising for a PSYCHIC. The interruptions for Brooke’s various opinions continue. It’s as if she fails to grasp the idea that she’s supposed to be objectively telling a story, as it happened. And the thing is, SOMETIMES her opinions are profound and telling. But also, sometimes it’s more like Brooke is trying to waft her own fart because she thinks she’s mainlining the secret truths of the universe. So, I’m not saying she needs to stop interjecting, but I am saying that she needs to be more careful and reserved when doing so. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I really enjoy the actual content of this podcast. I enjoy the cases that are discussed and for the most part, I enjoy the way they’re presented. I don’t care if it’s Brooke or Bill. That being said, the ADs are KILLING ME lately. There are so so so many of them, before, twice in the middle and after the podcast. And, even more frustrating is that almost all of the ads are (more or less) exclusively for women. Which... idk... makes me feel kind of like I don’t matter, as a male listener? Also, now and then, Brooke interrupts the show to offer some sort of conjecture or opinion on something that someone involved with the case has just said. Often times it’s about her opinion on some backwater detective’s interpretation of a suspects reaction to shock, or something of the sort. This is sometimes okay. But, it’s happening too much lately and I’m beginning to worry that my eyes are going to roll out of my head, if it keeps up. Also, come on... don’t record while you’re sick. lol There’s some content out right now where Brooke clearly has the Flu or something. I hope she’s feeling better, but maybe just take the day off next time.

    Boring Narration
I tried hard to like this podcast. However the narrator is the worst. She’s reading from a script with zero inflection…I honestly don’t think SHE’s interested in these stories. The narrator must be somebody’s relative to have been awarded this podcast. Terrible. I expect so much more from a well known show. Lame.

    Pro police anti constitution
This podcast is one on the most biased things I’ve ever listened to. It endorses trampling the constitution to get a conviction and acts disgusted when the law protects people’s fundamental rights. This is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever listened to. Do not listen to this podcast!
  • koleleea
    Too many adds
The adds are so invasive, randomly put in. There also way too many. Throws off the whole show.
  • addi walton
    Only ads
Listened to a “42” minute podcast but ended up being 20 minutes in ads. Some weren’t even a minute apart.
  • Phillip Brian Butler
    Argh
I tried it, but on the very first episode that I listened to the presenter did not know the difference between a Solider and Sailor. Doesn't lend to having much credibility.
  • al0ndra
    Skims??
Really?!! 🤮 She doesn’t even need anymore $$$ from anyone.
  • juliebe@ns
2 ad breaks in less than a minute?
Um, literally an ad finished at 24:04, then less than a minute of the show, then an ad started again at 24:54…
  • SAWie91
    90% ads
I love cold case files but these episodes are 90% ads, and most times its the same ad multiple times in a row, not a great adaptation😂

Third Go-Round of Old Content, Disappointing Cash Grab with More Commercials Than Content
Used to be a great podcast. Which ever old white man executive, who’s completely out of touch with reality, who “created” this “strategy” should be let out to pasture…… Stop feeding us the same slop and repackaging it. Unsubscribed.

    Difficulty loading with hardwired internet
Something isn’t right with these episodes - they buffer frequently and it’s the ONLY podcast that does it. Anyone else having issues? Too bad, I used to enjoy this but there’s something seriously wrong with the quality
  • ellaoh22
    Used to be great
This show used to be great, but now it’s just I Survived episodes for some reason. It’s too ad-heavy for the episode length, and there are weird outtakes in the ads too. Let’s clean it up

    Fantastic
Love Cold Case Files. My favorite podcast. Re review 8/19/2023: When are we going to see new episodes? Tired of seeing Reopened. I don’t want to listen to repeats. I also don’t want to hear I survived , I subscribe to it.
  • snooks the schnauzer
My new top true crime podcast
Such an interesting podcast! Sad but also refreshing to get to hear from survivors, instead of victims who are no longer with us!
  • aggravated by ad volume
    The ADs
The ad to content ratio is so bad the content can’t flow at all. The unedited stumbling over the ad content is hilarious. Even worse, how fragile is Bill Curtis’ ego that the host has to keep referring to him with unnecessary superlatives? Giving up on this one.
