Great show and perspective on history
I love Dan’s rational approach to history which is informative and not (too) politically charged. I have always been interested in history but his shows have made history riveting and raised my knowledge to a whole new level. I see there are a few recent negative reviews from this last episode because it’s a sensitive topic, but I wouldn’t let that deter you from the valuable information and insight he consistently provides. I also notice the few people accusing Dan of making false claims give no specifics or documentation of any kind, yet he always cites his sources. If you are the type of person who listens to inflammatory criticism with no specifics given…. Dan’s show wouldn’t be for you anyway. Overall, highly recommend this show.

    Parroting False Information
Very disappointed to hear Dan parrot misinformation in his latest addendum regarding the Holocaust. In regards to the situation in Israel & Palestine, some of the claims made by Dan as part of his presentation have since been disproven. It’s sad that Western media continues to echo these willingly.

    Winners propaganda
Grown tired of Dan He always said history is written by the victors, and that’s what he does with the “ holocaust “ episode. He’s selling the holocaust narrative over again from US/Zionist perspective. It’s used to hide US war crimes in Dresden, Hiroshima, and benefit Isreal to this day. In older episodes he said Hitler is worse than Ghenghis khan even

    Unfortunate
Listened to this show for history, not fantasy propaganda.

    So disappointing
It’s very funny that anything bad is always right wing to dan. I’ve listened to every show on the old and new platforms. The trump derangement syndrome has made this unlistenable. At the point where stalins ussr is referred to as moderately left wing you’ve lost the plot. I’m done.

    The mystery of the geraniums
Dear Dan and Co. Your Holocaust episode was informative and heartbreaking. I was struck by your mention of the geraniums. In Mediterranean countries Geraniums are planted by windows to repel flies and mosquitos. I believe it’s the citronella oil. There may have been some logic to having them around at the camps - and not for aesthetic reasons. I am also hoping/wishing/praying/begging (like many of your listeners) for some fresh ‘Common Sense‘ episodes on the state of American politics from your unique perspective. Thank you so much for seeing the world as you do! It’s eye-opening!! In peace and gratitude. Cheryl G.

    Regarding Superhumanly Inhuman
Thank you. One of the most intense episodes I have heard with the greatest humanity and understanding about one of the darkest times in recent history. Not for the weary or weak. But so important and unforgettable. Your blood will turn cold.

    Super Superhumanly Human
This was the most insightful program about the holocaust I’ve encountered thank you

    Disappointed in you Mr. Carlin
We have heard many horror stories about the holocaust. Whatever it really was I know it was horrendous. The timing of this coincides a little to much with current affairs and it appears you want to pull a sympathy card for Israel. Could you please follow this up with an extended and impartial deep dive into the Israel/Palestine tragedy? Go back as far into history as needed! Other than the thing with Rick Rubin, this may be the only one of your shows I’ll skip.
  • Sophia_10001
You could have chosen this time to speak about a genocide
Instead you speak about one that happened in the 1940’s, which was terrible. But it’s being used to justify the one going on at this very moment. Will history look back kindly on YOU, Dan?

    Awesome Podcast for History Buffs
Great discussion and analysis about various historical topics. I feel like I have learned so much from these discussions. I even listen to this over Netflix / Prime movies or TV series! Please keep up the production.

    Asymmetrical perspectives
One of the most biased, out of touch, and plainly stupid podcast episodes I have ever heard. The guest makes repeated flippant remarks about covid vaccines (which have now been roundly and widely discredited) and makes asinine and presumptive arguments about the future of asymmetric war, and he does it in SUCH a short timespan before we see a return to large scale nation-state war between Ukraine and Russia! A notion he totally discredits! No need for tanks? Ask either side about that one. Max’s assertions are so far off base they nearly completely discredit everything he says, and frankly, it hurts Dan’s credibility to have allowed him on. What a complete embarrassment for both max and Dan, and if max is part of mil think-tanks, no wonder America has performed so poorly in the last few wars we’ve engaged in. What an abortion of a show.

    True appreciation
I can’t express in my limited vocabulary how very grateful I am to have the opportunity to listen and enjoy all episodes by Dan . He has a true gift.

Gratitude for all the effort to this intellectual asset
I have gratefully enjoyed and been helped by Hardcore History and addendum conversations, but haven’t shared that before, not being in enough health to do so. Will submit this review to say thank you, and share what prompted it: Dan’s conversation with Kenneth Hart…after this amazing chat I hoped and then was stoked to hear that Kenneth’s book should be available, and it has already been downloaded to dive into in subsequent walks. There have been major blocks of knowledge that help enable new perspective to be viewed from that I’ve gained through this that works steadily. Just felt like passing this kind of immediate, in the moment effect from and pleasure of your work, Dan and crew, was in order to color in the arrival of it on this individual end, and the thrill for the deeper layers to peel back to come. Cheers.

    Dan is great!
Dan does a great job! I do have to say Max Brooks was quite naive and certain of himself despite his living in a bubble of delusion. I too wish Dan would have pushed back a little harder on some of the misinformation and adolescent platitudes he insistently spouted. Otherwise, great stuff!
  • Mombo-Man
Just pick an episode and listen.
Dan is a master of history from a different perspective. I hated history then discovered Dan through his current events podcast “Common Sense”. Through Dan I learned of “ THe rest is History” and Danielle Bouillis “History on fire” which thankfully emerged free again from behind a paywall. Thanks to these three shows, I have found an education and love of history. Wish they would have taught it this way in school.

    Audio quality
I am a huge fan, but I really struggled with the audio quality of your last episode. Daniele is an amazing guest, but I could not hear him.
  • Abe Lever
    Sneeches and Vonnegut
I just finished The Long View and references to such a spectrum of things to help shape his perspective including Star Trek, Seuss and Vonnegut… entertaining, insightful, brilliant! Great points regarding the idea of “indigenous”/“native”. A different episode idea: history of human nutrition. Maybe with Vinnie Tortorich as a guest? How raw milk came to be vilified. How (in our country at least) nutritional lipids (aka “fat”) became a fiend (Vinnie has a couple documentaries on the topic). The book Sugar Blues lays out centuries-worth of history of sugar consumption and its insidious effect.

Well researched and well thought out perspectives
Love Dan Carlin’s deep dives into global history. He brings horrific and compelling periods of history to life through deep research and well-curated quotes from historians and historical figures. Currently listening to his episode about the Atlantic Slave Trade. It’s a must listen, especially for Americans who are curious about our history. It more important than ever with intentional efforts to suppress this period of history in educational institutions.

    Engineering Victory with Elon
The moment this episode hit my feed, I knew it was the last thing i would ever listen to from Dan. I love his stuff, HH and Common sense are fantastic. But having Elon on; don’t care if this is about SpaceX or not. Really should’ve second guessed this.

    Nuclear War
This is less of a review and more a commentary on the Hollands and Brooks episode. While I think there is some justification around the concern that people aren’t afraid of nuclear weapons the way they should be or used to be, I think people of my generation (millennials) have maintained conscious awareness of the potential ramifications of nukes - with video games. I’m sure some people will find this idea ridiculous but there have been a number of extremely vivid, detailed games dealing with the possible aftermath scenarios of nuclear war and none of them are positive. In pretty much every instance I can think of, society as we know it is gone, humanity has backslid to extreme tribalism, the environment is incredibly hostile and survival by most is extremely unlikely. The Fallout series does a great job of depicting what parts of the United States would be like after the nukes fall. The Metro series (based on the books by Dmitry Glukhovsky) details the survival of a small group of people who happened to be in the subway tunnels of Moscow (and other Russian cities) when the nukes fall. The Stalker games similarly deal with the potential horrible environmental consequences of the fallout within the Chernobyl exclusion zone. So I, for one, feel like I’ve got a pretty good sense of the consequences of a post nuclear war world and I want no part of it. If you think playing with nukes isn’t a big deal, check those games out. While they are art and interpretation, games are often heavily researched to provide a sense of realism.

    The Fabulous Bill Barrett
So sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. He was without question the reason I was hooked into listening to this ‘new show’ I’d never heard of. Wonderful tribute. I will say it pains me to hear Dan talk about Common Sense in the past tense! Would love for more of that show. Rest In Peace, Bill!

Addendum keeps getting better and better!
Episode 21 holland and sandbrook may be my favorite addendum episode to date. The American and Brits sitting in judgement of other empires while making “excuses“ for colonialism is peak history. Lol we listeners were certainly rolling our eyes at how convenient an objective look at the morality of empire building and the seemingly justifiable way in which the British gentleman explains his thoughts. Then to have Sanbrook point out that that’s what Dans listeners would be thinking was delightful. I felt seen and now the better off for it. I came into this episode already a fan of Dan and Tom but am pleased to say that I am now a fan of all three. NOTE: Please bring on more authors of whom works you cite during your Hardcore History podcast.

I very much enjoyed the last episode.
I very much enjoyed the last episode and toward the end when you had your philosophical discussion about right and wrong and inevitability I could not stop thinking about eminent domain. We still have laws that let us take peoples property if they aren’t using it the right way when we think we have a better way to use it.
  • SkipperCheif
    The English are coming
I can’t believe how good this episode was very interesting. Very serious. When I think about Churchill and him saying the toughest people in the field what men were in the panzers divisions. I guess being American I see people fighting in sneakers. And if the Germans are pushing 2-6 percent GDP. Weather the Russians are here to win Germans rearming doesn’t sound good I know my grandpa never forgave. If you talk about Alexander Cesar and Napoleon though I’m a fan of the classics having read Herodotus…..Plutarch….. Xenophon….. Napoleon and Elba means he did it twice.

    Iran
Somehow missed everything about Iran financing terrorism all over the Middle East and the world.

    Max Brooks episode
His comment and bowls that white supremacy is bubbling up a possible civil warfare is ridiculous. I’ve been in public safety for more than 25 years and involved in fighting terrorism. The federal government is pushing that political agenda with no evidence provided to local government. Brooks view is goofy and should have been called out at political fiction.

    Olympias
I just finished the episode “glimpses of olympias” and I’ve got to say I’m in aww of the amount of research and effort put into this episode. I’ve always heard of the tale of Alexander the Great, and was aware he had a mother. I never knew about the prominent role she played during this time period. The tenacity and drive this woman had is inspiring. When you went into detail on how she channeled Dionysus in the battle against Adea Eurydice gave me literal chills. I have to say though, Nicholas cage as Alexander?? That I cannot wrap my head around. None the less fantastic episode!!

    Its not what it was…
I want to listen to dan tell stories again. If i want to listen to interviews ill turn joe rogan on. Dan is a storyteller that is a once in a generation level talent and really needs to do what hes best at imo. Also, he needs to be doing more common sense shows. His sense of what’s going on tied in with historical references is extremely important at this time.
