Mark of the Maker

Hobbies #174

Mark of the Maker is a panel discussion with renowned custom knife makers Tom Krein, Sean Kendrick and Michael Burch, and hosted by Mark Stheiner. The format is much like a group of friends sitting around in The Pit at Blade Show, talking knives - a look at life from the perspective of the maker as well as the collector. Covering broader topics such as tactical knife history, trends, industry commentary and influences of social media, as well as conversations with other knifemakers, collectors and notable figures in and around the custom knife world. Music: “noir guitar” by Stevie’s Amp Shack, from the Free Music Archive, CC BY 4.0

    My New Favorite Podcast
Couldn’t really get into podcasts for the longest time, finally found one that I can’t stop listening to. Great for information as a new maker in my early 20’s and also highly entertaining. Not great for my wallet, ordered a Randall and a Hinderer in O1 since I’ve started listening LOL

The Best of the Knife Podcasts
No drama, no fads, no nonsense. The four hosts have been around the block once or twice (or more), and they know what they’re talking about. With that said, they don’t take themselves too seriously, and they haven’t lost the passion for knives many of us had in our youth. What’s not to love?

Best podcast on Knives I’ve listened to.
With such a high percentage of knives and edc/gear podcasts that are unlistenable (I’ve tried to listen to maybe 10 different podcasts on the subjects); I was grateful to have found one that is this well done. I listened to the Loveless episode in it’s entirety and immediately subscribed. The discussion is well structured and the guys seem to be earnest in their love for the craft and it’s workmanship. Thanks! Keep up the good work; it’s appreciated.

    Pricing Knives Episode
This is my second episode I’ve listened to. I’m a part time knife maker and pricing knives has always been a major, uneducated, mystery skill for me. This episode was VERY HELPFUL! Since I make stock removal, fix blade knives by hand with a rudimentary belt grinder, drill press, block & sandpaper and files it takes me a while to complete a knife. Initially, I looked at an hourly price. But then I can’t charge people for my learning time. It has to be more realistic pricing based on the material, look (art) and maybe if it includes a leather sheath. Hearing the way these guys price their knives has taken the uncertainty away for me. Thanks Guys, Jim Van Landingham

For anyone into knives and edc.
Great topics. A show with experienced knife makers and an awesome collector. Each of whom is distinct from each other providing their own insights into various topics of the knife and edc community. Highly recommended. I wish this show was live so I could call in at times.

    Great long forum podcast
Have always been interested in knives ever since I can remember. I am only 21 years old and have had a new interest of taking my love of knives from collecting to black smithing. This show was recommended from a youtuber I watch. Extremely entertaining and very knowledgeable. Also a plus I live in SWMO very close to Michaels hometown!

    Great Podcast
I have enjoyed getting to know more about these makers and a subject we all care about for very different (and sometimes very similar) reasons. The introduction episodes were well produced and provided lots of information. Monte Burch is my hero.
  • DozaBuilds
    Strong from the start
The intro, the ambiance, the content, it's all top notch. I listen to several podcasts from all sorts of subjects and usually it takes a while for the podcaster(s) to find their feet and rythm. Mark of the Maker hit the nail on the head right from the beginning.

    Great Collaboration
I am relatively new to podcast in general because I never really found anything I was really interested in that would hold my attention. Mark does a wonderful job hosting the show, however it is really a great collaboration as Tom, Michael and Sean all contribute and keep it flowing quite well. I’ve been into this hobby since I was a kid and never really knew many people who were as interested or stuck with it as much as I have. I always felt like people though it was odd that I have one or two or three knifes on me most of the time. It has been wonderful to lean more about your backgrounds, how you got into knives and knife making and a bit about what drives you. I have listened to all of the episodes and my wife even listened one night with me and was surprised at how much she liked it even though she isn't interested in the hobby. I might even start to read books on tape, haha... Thank you Mark, Tom, Michael and Sean, I am excited to get into some of the topics for episodes that you have mentioned. - Scott H

    Awesome!
It’s nice to learn about other makers while working in the shop. Keep up the good work!
  • Audio-Engineer
    Entertaining and educational
I’ve really enjoyed listening to the history of each maker. As well as the stories of makers from the past who influenced and mentored all of the guys. The stories are really entertaining about each persons progression into becoming a full time maker. Sean cracks me up with his quips and “word of the day”! This has been a great inspiration for me to get back into trying to make knives! If you’re into knives this is a great podcast to listen to!
