Tom's Big Spiders - Tarantulas and Inverts

177

A podcast devoted to the proper care and upkeep of tarantulas and other inverts. After keeping a G. porteri for over 16 years, I decided that I wanted to add another tarantula to my collection. Several years later, I now keep over 100 specimens and 90+ different species. It’s safe to say that I am now completely addicted to the hobby.I’m NOT an expert, and I’m currently still learning about keeping these fascinating creatures. In fact, there are so many species, that I suspect that I’ll still be learning years from now. This blog is a bit of a journal to track my interest in the hobby and to share some of the information I’ve learned. A teacher by trade, I enjoy passing along what I’ve information and techniques I’ve discovered and helping others in their successful pursuit of this hobby. I enjoy hearing from folks, whether through comments on the blog or email.I have done and continue to do a lot of research, and I will only be discussing animals I personally keep, so the information I present should be current and accurate. I also regularly update older posts with current photos, observations, and information. However, this is an ever-evolving hobby, so I implore anyone interested in keeping these animals to use whatever they find here as a springboard for further research on techniques or species-specific care.

I watch the YouTube videos and just got into listening to podcasts
I have watched almost every youtube video from Tom I always go to Tom to learn about a new species thst I’m interested in before I get them. Tom had great videos on just about everything in the hobby. I just got in to listening to podcasts (I know I’m late to the game)… I am learning more then I ever thought listening. Thank you Tom and billie for what you do for the hobby.

A must listen if you’re even remotely interested in the hobby
Tom is a wonderful source of knowledge about Tarantulas and true spiders. I love that he does this as a passion instead of monetizing everything. Every episode I learn something or come away with a different perspective.

    As professional as ever
Tom has been one of my most respected content creators on Tarantula’s for years now and gets a large majority of the credit for me getting into the hobby myself almost five years now. I highly recommend his podcast for anyone looking for an informative, honest, and reliable source on this subject.

    Essential for all hobbyists.
When it comes for clear, concise and entertaining husbandry information, Tom is the best in the business. He breaks down pertinent topics in a digestible way, making it easy to listen to him for hours on end. I would not be where I am today in my tarantula-keeping career without listening to his advice and testimonies.

    Best info for hobbyists
I love listening to Tom. He’s a teacher by trade and has no problem presenting a lot of very good information without boring you to tears. Super down to earth guy interested in giving tarantula keepers the most accurate information around. If you are a serious hobbyist you should give this podcast a listen!

A wonderful source of information for the newbie, or experienced hobbyists
Whether you are just getting started, or you’re already an established collector, this podcast is a must. Tom does an excellent job at communicating with each listener as an “individual”, and never assuming that every listener is at the same level. He covers all aspects of the hobby. Everything from the very basic, to advanced topics such as breeding. You will also find a great deal of information concerning specific species care and troubleshooting as a tarantula keeper. Do yourself a favor and subscribe, you won’t regret it.
  • Toms Tangents
Great podcast but beware of his tangents.
I love the podcast and am fully emerged in the hobby. Just beware that although a certain episode may have a particular title, don't expect the majority of the episode's content to reflect what the title is exclusively. This guy goes off on more tangents and trails off on different topics ore than anyone I've ever listened to. It's just the way he is. He will trail off on a completely different path and cause you to ask "how did we get to this topic when we were talking about something COMPLETELY different?" He's also very careful to not offend anyone where sometimes I wish he'd actually pick a side here and there. He tends to walk the line of being incredibly tentative to say the wrong thing or offend certain people. Anyways, it's a great podcast for anyone in the arachnid hobby or anyone looking to possibly get a Tarantula. Tom is awesome and he will tell you everything you need to know multiple times and somewhat redundantly.

The podcast for all levels of tarantula enthusiast!
Tom’s years of experience keeping T’s coupled with his background in teaching has definitely made this an accessible and informative must-listen podcast for fans and keepers of tarantulas, and an invaluable resource for those of us at novice and intermediate experience levels.

My go-to for education and topics
I can’t remember when I stumbled against Tom, but it was on his YouTube channel and now I listen to his podcast as well. I have had one tarantula for over 3.5 years and have recently decided to get more into the hobby, and I find his information extremely valuable in caring for my t’s( Currently now 13, soon to be 17). I really love the educational side of them and how to properly take care of them. And I really like the podcasts for his discussions on all kinds of topics. The fact that he shares his experiences and trials and errors of caring for them helps me to pinpoint where I might need to adjust my husbandry. I do like other channels for more “entertainment,” but Tom’s channel(s) I trust when caring for my babies.

    Keep up the great work!!
I love all Arthropods, and while I don’t raise tarantulas, I do care for wolf spiders and jumping spiders. The information here has proven to be extremely useful in providing tips and setups for them! Thank you so much for this podcast! Can’t wait for the next episode!

    Thank you!
Tom has brought his great blog and YouTube content to podcasting. And just like his other content, it is top notch quality information. I absolutely love being able to listen to these podcast as I go about my day. Thank you Tom.

Every Tarantula Keeper and Enthusiast Should Have This Podcast
There are a lot of fun tarantula keepers to watch and follow, but when I think of whom I respect, I only think of two names: Rob Carman and Tom Moran. Tom’s Podcast adds extra info for hobbyists in addition to his work on YouTube and his blog. I originally started following Tom because he gave in-depth accounts of his husbandry (keeping animals) which was something other keepers just didn’t bother to detail (at least on YouTube). His videos greatly helped me when I started keeping my first tarantulas, especially his sling care guide, which every keeper should watch and print out! Tom’s not particularly concerned with flair, which is a good thing for new and expert hobbyists, alike. His advice keeps in mind the cost point of entry for many would be keepers. Much of what he suggests that keepers use can be put together on a budget of $50 or fewer, bar the species of T. More importantly, Tom’s advice only comes from experience. He doesn’t have notes on a species he hasn’t kept. By far, his greatest asset in this space has been his honesty. I’ve listened to every episode released of the podcast, so far, at the time of my writing this review. Tom may not like the sound of his voice, but I think he’s found his platform. People listen to podcasts for expert information, condensed into audio, and while Tom isn’t and doesn’t claim to be an arachnologist or entomologist, he talks about what he knows and keeps it simple. He’s an expert in what he’s observed, and that’s pretty darn good for people looking for information. Keep it up, Tom! The podcast is fantastic!

    Impressive & Beneficial
I’ve been downloading these every week and look forward to hearing Tom’s voice talking about tarantulas. There is a lot of useful information and each podcast has some form of humor involved. Keep it up, Tom!

incredibly knowledgeable and helpful for those getting into the hobby
This podcast is amazing and really fun to listen to. It's nice to have that information distilled into an easily digestible format. I don't have time to read blogs or watch youtube so this is the perfect way for me to get information. I listen to podcasts at work while I cut diets or clean enclosures. I have been a zookeeper for 10 years. I worked for several months at our insectarium and herpetarium but I now take care of primates exclusively. I recently (within the last month) got into the tarantula hobby with my 7 year old daughter after we took care of a wolf spider. Taking care of tarantulas is very different than taking care of mammals. Their husbandry is so unique and it's so helpful to hear from the tarantula veterans. Thanks Tom for compiling all your years of experience and sharing it with us so more of us can get into this amazing hobby the right way.

    The much-needed theraphosid podcast
Tom is down-to-earth and very knowledgable. His teaching experience shows, as he articulates himself decisively and differentiates between his opinions and that which he can regard as fact. Tom approaches the topics with a scientific attitude, which is to say he isn’t uncomfortable with uncertainty or unwilling to admit his mistakes. This makes for a refreshing tone that is neither too academic nor too watered down. It isn’t easy to produce content, much less quality content about a narrow topic. I can’t think of too many better candidates to pull this off than Tom Moran.
