Sentimental Garbage is a podcast hosted by Caroline O'Donoghue about the culture we love that society can sometimes make us feel ashamed of. Formerly a chick-lit podcast, sometimes a Sex and the City podcast. We don't know the most, we feel the most.

Have dreamt in an Irish accent since finding this show
I am the person listening to these episodes over and over because they’re my smart, witty friends.

    Sentimental in the City
Have I watched the entirety of Sex and the city, or And Just Like That? No. Have I listened to Sentimental in the City twice a year since Dolly and Caroline first started recording together? YES. Love the whole pod, but especially need to talk about how much I adore Sentimental in the City. It’s everything.

    Fantastic and fabulous
There’s nothing I love in this world more than listening to smart hot women talk about movies. This podcast is like a warm hug from a long distance friend. 10/10

Just keeps getting better and better!!
Caroline must be an amazing friend because she has the most beautiful connections with her guests. The Shania episode was perfection! Let’s go girls!!!

    fave podcast
Caroline has the most incisive and eloquent cultural commentary I have ever heard. She’s also extremely funny and unpretentious. I love this podcast so much.

    OMG
I didn’t know I needed this podcast but it might be the best thing I’ve ever heard?

    My favorite podcast
When I heard that Dolly bought Caroline the pink Christian Louboutins that Miranda’s water broke on, I cried. I will forgive them for not loving Todd Rundgren’s “Hello, It’s Me.” Tommy the Irish Doorman 4-Ever. I just love these women. Brilliant writers, brilliant talkers, brilliant friends.

    Sentimental in the City
Found this podcast after hearing Sarah Marshall rave about it. These two ladies are absolute gems. I felt myself blush at a few moments because it’s so relatable. You often hear about podcasts, “I just feel like I’m sitting down with real friends, people I know!” Well, hearing this podcast is the first time I’ve truly understood what that meant. Cannot wait to hear more. As Samantha would say, just fabulous!

    Wonderful podcast, poorly recorded
This show feels a lot like getting a drink with my most interesting friends. There are so many laughs and excellent insights and moments that make you go, “Oh wow.” But add me to the chorus of people who are frustrated with the sound quality. I’m listening to the “Break-ups” episode and both speakers literally go from whispering to screaming with laughter, really frequently, so I feel like I’m missing a quarter of the jokes because I can’t change the sound volumes quickly enough to hear what’s being said without having a very loud laugh blow out my ears. O’Donoghue especially loves to deliver her cattiest jokes sotto voce, and I’m always bummed when I simply have to miss one of her excellent burns, because I can’t hear it.

    Love the show! BUT…
Please please please adjust the levels on your microphone so that when you laugh it doesn’t cause a load of fry through microphone and also *please* make sure the guest is at vaguely the same volume as the host! On more than one episode i have spent the whole show turning it up and down and it really takes away from the experience. The content is 10/10–but the production quality could be improved.

I love this podcast so much. It helps get me through the day. It brings me so much joy.

    Insightful and joyful
When I commute to work this is one of my favorite podcasts. I feel I am chilling and hanging with girlfriends. Caroline has a lot of great insights about characters, plot lines, why a story works or what could’ve made a story better etc. I enjoy her perspectives on creative works as a creative person myself. She’s also just a joy to listen to and I laugh out loud with her constantly! Lovely personality, intelligent, spunky, all wrapped up with an endearing Irish accent!

    Disappointing? I’m not sure
The bones of this podcast are great, but the host has a thing that makes me very sad where she, while praising the shining light on cultural artifacts and the depth of so much work that’s been coded as feminine and maligned, maligns other amazing work. She loves Bring it On for the message of cultural appropriation but think Clueless is fluffy nonsense (aka sentimental garbage?)? This confuses me and it happens a lot. Also, the SATC season 3 analysis completely missed the mark because the hosts didn’t contextualize it as the first season after 9-11, and it lead them down tunnels of falseness. It’s just almost but not. I gave it a solid effort but I can’t go on with this one. Maybe if you are younger and don’t have so much adult and teen experience with the work she covers, it would be easier to take it in without the glaring holes and mistakes distracting you.

    Insightful AND delightful
This podcast is brilliant and funny—snarky too, when necessary! Caroline O’Donoghue and her wonderful guests do an incredible job of exploring books, movies, tv shows, and music, sharing funny and tender and scathing insights in equal measure. Each time I listen to an episode I’m reminded why I love reading, love my friends, and need those conversations about what matters most in our lives and in the cultures we share.
  • emmalfs
    absolutely great
Always makes me laugh and think, takes the sentimental stuff women are so often derided for loving, and gives it the attention it deserves. Caroline is so funny and smart, the guests are fab. I love that it talks, through culture, about what it feels like to be a teenage girl and young woman in such an open-hearted way, never scornful but not taking itself too seriously

    An absolutely fantastic podcast!
Sentimental Garbage is one of my favorite podcasts - whip-smart, hilarious, and thoughtful analysis about pop culture. Highly recommend!

Love it, but the sound is terrible
Honestly, one of the funniest podcasts, I love every minute of it, but what actually made me write a review is the fact that every single episode is recorded terribly. Could you, please, please, hire someone who could do it better? ❤️ HNY to youuu!

    Influencer episode was not it
This is a pretty interesting pod but I could NOT handle the influencer episode. The entitlement, privilege and tone deafness of the entire thing really turned me off.

    My Irish BFF
Thanks to Dolly Alderton’s feature on “sentimental in the city,” I was able to discover this amazing podcast & its lovable, hilarious host who *feels the most* in the best ways possible. Caroline chooses the most lovely guests to complement her & add to the richness of discussions about all the things you & your friends could spend hours discussing, like the movies and music from your childhood. Love Caroline, love this podcast & honestly can’t wait until season 2 AJLT for more Dolly in the future with her, too, because they have the most infectious energy together.

    Best, loveliest podcast
I am a huge lover of both Caroline O’Donoghue and Dolly Alderton as authors and this podcast made me fall in love with them both as people. Listening to their sentimental in the city series feels like we’re all in someone’s living room, having a wine’d up chat about SATC …and everything that it brings up in each of us. Laugh out loud and always, always, always (!!!) spot on. So glad the podcast — and the podcasters themselves— exist. Happy to be a chattering oddball 🫡

    Love love love
IT IS JEREMY STRONG!!! Love sentimental and the city series. Took a chance 10 minutes before getting a procedure done, put it on auto play, and was delighted to have they wonderful ladies keep me company. Their description of the arc of season 1 - blew my mind. It is insane to think of how many times I’ve seen these episodes and talked about them - that there could be two people out there who could breathe such fresh life into the series. I learned so much and got so much perspective. I even learned to like the ring episode. I do wish they had talked about the fleet week episode being the first written and filmed post 9/11, though I realize I’m a bit older and more American.

    Charming, Hilarious & Heartfelt
I discovered this podcast randomly - and so happy I did. I first started listening to the Sentimental in the City episodes but quickly started adding all episodes to my queue. I personally connect more with the movie discussions and enjoy making a night of them - like how I never saw Coyote Ugly but took a quarantined night in to listen to the podcast as I cooked/ cleaned then watched the movie while I ate and had so much fun laughing at the scenes and moments the podcast lovingly poked fun at. Although I’m from the US I also loved the High Street episode - really any bit of nostalgia makes me happy. So excited for new episodes to start coming out - thanks Caroline for the laughs!

    Love Caroline’s Unabashed Fangirl Positivity!
I discovered this podcast in spring 2021 because I was rewatching SATC - ended up loving Caroline & Dolly’s take on everything so much that I stayed subscribed when Sentimental in the City was over…so glad I did! The topics that have been discussed since are delightful to listen to and reminisce about! I’m the same age as Caroline so a lot of the cultural references make sense to me and are just a joy to listen to. I’ve revisited many movies since with these insights in mind - it’s so fun! Thank you so much for a smart and happy podcast!

The Sister I Wish I Had
I’m the little sister of two older brothers and I spent most of my life rejecting the feminine media I loved because I wanted them to think I was cool. Listening to this feels like healing that lil girl who loved dresses but only wore her brothers’s hand me downs. Thanks you!

    Nothing guilty about this pleasure
I discovered this podcast when I heard Caroline on Backlisted talking about a book and writer I’d never heard of, and I wanted more! I didn’t even like sex in the city as a show but I’m enjoying listening to the pod! I have so many suggestions for books you should do, but I’m going to settle on Twilight and Where’d You Go Bernadette. Please!!
  • Adventuretimeeeee
    Simply delightful
This podcast is simply a delight. It was recommended to me by a dear friend who is also unashamed of her love of Sex and the City. The hosts, Dolly and Caroline, are a real pleasure to listen to - they are whip-smart, hilarious, and have an uncanny ability to speak eloquently on ~themes~ in this show that I’ve always thought about but never been able to articulate myself. One of my favorite aspects of this podcast is being able to listen in on and briefly experience their friendship, which is full of kindness, support, and a warmth that desperately makes me miss the women in my life that COVID has prevented me from seeing. I could listen to these women pontificate about any topic and be happy. An absolute must-listen for Sex and the City super fans and love female friendship.

    Brain exploded
Where have you women been all my life? I just binged the sentimental in the city miniseries and I feel like I have two new best friends. I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed their well observed, well spoken insights. What a total gem, what a finely wrapped piece of delicious content, I’m so glad I stumbled upon this. Thank you!

Where can I find friends like you ladies?!
I am OBSESSED with these two. They remind me so much of my friend and I. They truly dive deep into what sex and the city is all about and made me think about it in a way I haven’t. I’m so happy to know my obsession with sex and the city I’m not so alone.

    We all feel the most
Sentimental in the city has changed how I think about relationships and changed my expectations for podcasts x a million. I just listen the episodes reviewing the series and already want to re-listen. I’m so happy to find people that care about this nostalgic show as much as I do!! Could listen forever

    A balm for the soul
This is the podcast I never knew I needed and now that I’ve found it I can’t remember ever not listening...particularly at this time during the pandemic when I’m missing my girlfriends so acutely. I cackle out loud countless times, gasp at things realized that I never thought of, and even cried. I would listen to Caroline (and Dolly!) review toothpaste...but luckily there’s a multitude of novels and shows out there for them to carefully hold and analyze first.

    Crying laughing
God I Love this podcast! So good, feels like drinks with your funniest girlfriends- and offers amazing insights into relationships that end up blowing up your spot. The boy who called me by my last name, I now know that relationship was doomed from the beginning.
  • Engthusiast
    They feel the most
I’ve always loved sentimental garbage but Sentimental in the City is perhaps the most perfect of podcasts. Hearing these two gleefully cackle at each other for over an hour each week is an absolute joy. If someone were to ask me what female friendship sounded like I would just play them this podcast. Feels like a sleepover and sounds like me when I can’t stop laughing after three glasses of wine. 5/5 would recommend - just not to a man.

    Favorite Smart Escape
This podcast let’s me relish in my favorite rom coms while also thinking about them in a smart way with fantastic guests. Thanks for a long-deserved elevation of my favorite genre beyond “chick lit”!

    Love!
I love this podcast!!!!! I heard about Caroline from another podcast/newsletter (it miiiiight have been women who or Ctrl alt delete but I can’t remember) and subscribed to her newsletter. The newsletters were so cheeky and honest and insightful that, when I heard there was a podcast, I subscribed right away. I actually didn’t realize that the podcast would be book discussions but I am SO HAPPY that it is. I have a book club and, after listening to Caroline and her guest discussing it, one of our future books is High Fidelity. I am really surprised that there aren’t many ratings on this podcast; it’s truly one of the best. Thank you, Caroline!!!!

    My new favorite podcast
I really love this podcast. I'm from America and for some reason haven't really branched out into listening to podcasts from the UK or elsewhere and stumbled upon this one. I love Caroline, she's such a sweet, smart, friendly host. She has the cutest accent :) I really love the discussions she has with a great array of guests about "chick lit" books. I've never really listened to a book podcast either and didn't know it could be enjoyable to listen to conversations about books (that I mostly haven't read) but I DO. The latest episode on Maeve Binchy made me so excited to read Circle of Friends that I requested it from my local library right away. Thanks, Caroline!
  • RFelty
    Wildly funny and super smart!
This podcast is always a hoot as female authors discuss the books that left a mark on them, for better or worse. Very smart and lively dialog. I’ve learned a lot about books I might want to explore. Highly recommend this clever show.
  • Jessicls
    The best!
I can’t explain how much I love this podcast - it’s like discussing your favorite books with your best girlfriends, where you both ADORE whatever book it is, but you can also talk about its flaws and spin-off into discussions about how it relates to the world and your lives. Even episodes where I haven’t read the book being discussed are awesome! Try it out.
  • Kaishalovesbooks
    The BEST!!
I love listening to these women discuss books! Intelligent and super funny my TBR pile is growing by leaps and bounds - please do Jilly Cooper’s Riders soon!

Head over heels for this podcast!
I was turned on to Sentimental Garbage after an old prof of mine tweeted about it and have not looked back! The content is consistently fun, honest and genuinely heartwarming. Can I give it six stars out of five?? Is that a thing??
