I took a tangent from Geology in college and listening to Mr. Zentner makes me truly regret that decision. I love the content and love the info about PNW geological events. I stay close to this podcast app waiting for the next episode!

Sharing a review from Issaquah, WA: I discovered Professor Zentner by chance while I was home recovering from surgery earlier this year. I have learned so much from him about my adopted home. Each trip through eastern Washington and across the Columbia River has new meaning for me. Now I’m a dedicated Zent-nerd and share geology tidbits with my friends. Oh, and I got to visit the famous bakery across from the college. It was fabulous!

Having retired from IT at a community college in Tucson, it wasn’t unusual for this life long learner to look toward geology as an avocation. Finding Nick Zentner’s podcasts just made it more interesting and entertaining. The body of Nick’s online work presents Washington State in a way unlike any other author or presenter. There is an history of Washington that includes the rocks, the geologists, and the singer. I especially like the references to papers that I can look up. I recently took a 4,200 mile, 18 day road trip, with my wife to take a few pictures (of rocks), see a few relatives, a few critters and a lot of rocks designed around Nick’s field trips, YouTube lectures and podcasts with backup by Marli Miller, David Cowan, Michael Eddy, Jamie McDonald, R.W. Tabor, R.A. Haugerud, E.H. Brown and others mentioned in Nick’s works and we were not disappointed.

Gets straight into the podcast. Serious but still entertaining enough. I enjoy having it as a podcast instead of video.

Nick’s experiment into the podcast world is fascinating. My general interest in Geology over many years has been vastly deepened in the past few years. These episodes themselves make traveling on the freeway a real pleasure.

Nick Zenter brings all his loves to these podcasts. His love of geology, his love of sharing that love, his love of learning new things, and as well he brings his humility and humor. The Ethics of the Fathers, Pirkei Avot, teaches one who is easily embarrassed will not learn Torah, but that applies throughout life. Nick’s hunger for understanding far outstrips his ego. He takes you along for the ride, shares his thinking with you. Nick, I love your digressions! I love your fan-boy crush on your favs like Brian Atwater! Keeping it real.

I’m giving 4 stars because this professor is doing something important for the uneducated public. In that regard, I forgive the delivery, which sounds unscripted and awkward at times (reminds me of high school). Overall, this show is best for religious people with extremely rudimentary science education. As a catholic person, he is in a good position to convince other religious people that the earth is more than 5,000 years old. However, I don’t need god to explain how the universe works, and I’m looking for more advanced information on geologic history.

Nick is always a pleasure to listen to. I moved to the NW about 2 years ago and I am so thrilled I found him on YouTube. I am also delighted to have him on this podcast. It has been new to me to envision his visuals since this is audio only but it works as geology “ is about the story”. So many great stories! I love falling into geology this way! I always keep a lookout in the hardware store for him for he is a down to earth neighbor who brings humor and relatable ideas and theories to life. I like these short 30ish min episodes because I can fit him in my day easily. I appreciate his efforts to continue with different platforms. There is magic here.

Hey Nick, thanks for the podcast and the youtube videos - I'm learning so much about geology! My Dad and I in Northern California have been watching reruns of your livestreams since we are spending more time together during the pandemic. It's like a movie night but with rocks (you gotta love it!!). When I'm not visiting him I love to listen to these podcasts while doing dishes or while I'm on a run to either learn a new topic or to revisit one of the topics from the livestreams. I feel that I can learn the content even better by hearing it a second time in a different format (i.e., words instead of pictures and vice versa). Anyway, if you are looking for a podcast about geology and especially the pacific northwest, check this one out for sure!

I am a Mining Engineering B.S. student with 1 semester remaining at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and this podcast has expanded my view of the geology of the near-Rockies significantly over the past couple of months. Excellent professor.

Just drove 7 hours from Bryce Canyon to Twin Falls and I binged 9 episodes. It was all what I learned so far in his Geology 101 series on YouTube but I have fallen behind on those so this was a good refresher! Always engaging even if we couldn’t see visual aides, I remembered what I had drawn in my notes. Have another 6-7 hour drive back to Eastern Washington tomorrow and will continue binging!

Geology was my favorite science class. I enjoy using my imagination to visualize the Geological past surrounding me in eastern Idaho and Yellowstone. Thank you!

Great podcast. Big picture geology and movements of the earth’s crust is always good, but can you do one on pegmatites found within granites? Kudos to the podcast

I am working on my PhD in geology in Colorado. Most of my work involves stratigraphy, but I love listening to Nick’s podcast to get the “hard rock” perspective on geologic time. He has built an increasingly complex view of the tectonic history of the American west including a lot of recent research. He does an incredible job of making complex material available to the public. Thanks for all you do, Nick!

Hello Zentnerds! I’m a jeweler in the SF Bay Area who studied igneous petrology in grad school back in the Paleozoic. I listen to podcasts while I make jewelry. Nick’s podcast is the best geology podcast out there, and I can say this because I listen to them ALL. No joking. Nick doesn’t add anything unnecessary like theme music, silly games, or unrelated news. He sticks to the topic, and he is a talented educator. It’s especially fun when Nick is thinking through a problem out loud; that’s the real way science is done, folks! And if you haven’t already, check out Nick’s massive collection of videos on YouTube. It’s a geology lover’s paradise! Nick always has great visuals to demonstrate geologic concepts, and some (like chocolate pastries) make me double over with laughter. I found this podcast after stumbling onto Nick’s Geology 101 videos. I think part of what makes him so enjoyable to listen to is that he makes the podcast feel more like a conversation WITH you rather than AT you, like so many over-produced “professional” podcasts do (I’m talking to you BBC, NPR). He rambles, goes on tangents, fumbles around in his thoughts in the fly, but in a way that brings you along with him on his intellectual journey. His episodes don’t have the condescending “lecture” feel, but then neither do his lectures. He always comes across as a warm, welcoming, neighborly fella who you’d want to sit down with for a cup of coffee and shoot the bull, except there’s no bull, just millions of years of geological grandeur. And even though he is unashamedly Washington-centric he enriches my drives around western Missouri and helps me look at the landscape with new eyes, a new curiosity and a desire to know more.

I am a 63 year old principle software engineer. I appreciate what you have taught and the method of teaching. I had very little previous experience learning geology. Now I can not wait for your next audio or video episodes. Thank you for the time taken to share your knowledge.

My name is Charlie, I’m thirty one, and I work at a ceramic glaze production facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I make pottery on the side, with my wife. I enjoy learning all about what Nick has been discovering lately. His curation and presentation of geologic research is a gift. I’ve learned so much I didn’t know about the story of the west coast of North America before, with the many accretions of different exotic terranes described entertainingly as potatoes hitting a windshield. I dig the biographical histories of geologists and the interviews that he’s done as well. I’m looking forward to hearing more about evidence for the emerging Baja-BC theory. Nick makes difficult concepts easy to understand through repetition and analogy. Many of the analogies involve baked goods, which is great fun. I’ll have to travel to the PNW some day so I can see these places Nick talks about with my own eyes.

I’m a fan of Nick’s teaching. I retired as a buyer with a Fortune 200 company and started collecting rocks as a hobby. I became interested in researching what I was collecting. I’ve been watching his content on his Website, YouTube channel and listening to his Podcasts. After over a year of listening and at 68 years old I feel like I have a college 101 understanding or better. I’m now able to identify most of the rocks in my collection. Most of all, Nick has created a wonderful community of non political like minded geology brothers and sisters. Nick is a great story teller and he always makes me laugh. What is that worth to me? It’s priceless.

Mr. Zentner is so easy to listen to and has given the public so many options to learn geology from home. His personality and way of teaching really shine through here. Truly grateful to have the opportunity to follow along with his class and learn new things about a state I’ve loved and explored my entire life. I love listening to nick talk about geology. A good mix of info, humor and personal anecdotes. I live on the East coast but was born and raised on the West coast. Nicks stories about the landscape remind me of home any my personal connection with the eons old history of the landscape I grew up in and love.

My Masters in Geology (SRSU, 1986) is far behind me and I am not working in the field, but your podcast brings back memories and is a great affirmation of my understanding of geological principles and the geological history of North America. My Thesis was concerning the petrology and geochemistry of a shallow laccolith in Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co., Texas. I just wish there was a podcast of this quality about the geology of West Texas and adjoining provinces. I have enjoyed your discussion of various topics of Northwest and West Coast Geology and Tectonic history and how you are able to describe it in such a way that even in an audio only presentation, I can easily visualize what you are describing.

I watched all your YouTube lectures a couple years ago. I recently was seeking new podcasts. For some reason I immediately thought of you and searched your name. Behold, you’re on here! Geologist and podcaster Nick Zentner makes this topic fun and easy to follow, understand, and remember. He says “Geology is about stories not rocks” and his stories are fascinating! And, fascinatingly, the lessons are as much about civics as geology because he teaches his listeners how to think, logically. Nick Zentner should be required listening for all Americans right now.
