The Build Math Minds Podcast

Courses #115

The Build Math Minds podcast is for my fellow Recovering Traditionalists out there. If you don’t know whether or not you are a Recovering Traditionalist, here’s how I define us. We are math educators who used to teach math the traditional way. Flip lesson by lesson in the textbook, directly teaching step-by-step how to solve math problems. But now, we are working to change that to a style of teaching math that is fun and meets our students where they are at, not just teaching what comes next in the textbook. We want to encourage our students to be thinkers, problem solvers, and lovers of mathematics..we are wanting to build our students math minds and not just create calculators. If that is you, then this podcast is for you.

    Great information
I love this podcast because it reminds educators how children think and because she does it and an easy efficient way. I feel along the way teaching programs have tried to cram so much in that they forgot to teach upcoming teachers the old strategies that really work. This podcast brings back that understanding.

    Love the Math
I love the podcasts that help me to grow and learn about how children develop their math thinking. Thank you to your dedication to helping teachers help students to live mathematics

    I always learn something new!
I love the Build Math Minds Podcast because it's a short show but packed with rich ideas and resources. My favorite shows are the book and resource reviews because they help me see through all the not-great resources out there to ones that can be trusted. I am a middle school math teacher, so my favorite book review was the Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics series, because they also have resources for middle school. Even though I teach slightly older students, I still learn so much from this podcast because she often talks not about specific strategies but about concepts and ways of teaching that ALL students can benefit from. Thank you for making such a high-quality show that's quick enough to fit in on a free period and points me in the right direction to learn more!

    Episode 54
I love all your episodes and have taken your course twice! Thank you for helping transform the way I teach math to my students. I wasn’t able to find a link to Fawn’s page, would you be able to share that with me. Also, I just attended an early childhood conference that focused on play based learning for kindergarten. I was wondering if you had any book suggestions that discusses exploring number sense through play based learning. Thank you!

    Master Builder of Math Minds
I’ve been a Recovering Traditionalist since 2016! I’ve been making my way slowly through the “12 steps” to becoming a better teacher of mathematics. I love everything Christina and the Build Math Minds team puts out! I’ve been a BMM community member and have followed the blogs/vlogs but just recently discovered the podcast. I like how short and sweet they are, though I could listen to Math teacher talk for hours. I love when you review books that I already own because it means I don’t have to add yet another professional book to my overflowing amazon cart or wishlist. I really enjoyed the 13 Rules that Expire podcast. It reminded me of a book by Tina Cardone that I had just perused, called Nix the Tricks. Keep up the great work! I can’t get enough!

    Favorite podcast!
I LOVE the Building Math Minds podcast! It is my favorite podcast! My favorite BMM episodes are geared toward primary level teachers! I recently completed the Number Sense 101 module on the Building Math Minds website. It was pricey, but so worth it! It truly is the BEST math PD I have ever had in my teaching career. My favorite episode was about the Bottoms-Up Hundreds Chart. This episode was very insightful and shared about the article written by Bay-Williams & Fletcher. Christina brought up the language issues that affect students using the traditional hundreds chart. The bottoms-up hundreds chart makes more sense to students. I have switched over to this bottoms-up format and I wish other teachers would try it too. If I could change one thing, I wish there were more episodes! I recently caught up on listening to all the episodes and was disappointed when there weren’t any left. My favorite episodes are a bit longer and go into more depth about the subject matter at hand. I really like how each episode has a show notes page with links to the materials discussed. I very much recommend this podcast!

    1 Year Update:
I had originally posted the review below almost a year ago. Today, I can say that I have never missed one episode of Christina’s weekly podcast! It’s my a favorite. Short and sweet and the perfect amount of thoughtful content that fires me up for the new work week! I have ordered many of the books that she has recommended but on one of the more recent podcasts she spoke about George Couros and Katie Novak’s Innovate Inside the Box. That is one I would love to read next! As our district gets closer to adopting a formal curriculum, I think it would be the perfect time for motivation on how to be innovative within certain restraints! Thank you Christina, for all you do! So grateful for the contribution you make to the lives of sooo many students, teachers, and parents! “I am so excited to be able to soak up some of Christina’s great insights as I get ready for work each morning. I love the online community that she’s built but this makes it even easier to glean great info in a convenient way!”

If you teach math, you MUST listen to this podcast! Episode 45 on the "13 Rules that Expire" has completely changed my approach to teaching math. My goal this summer is to go back and listen to all of the episodes from the very beginning. There are SOOO many good nuggets of information in these podcasts. Trust me - it will change your math teaching forever!!

    Guide on the Side
Christina Tondevold is my guide on my own journey as a math educator. She shares so many interesting insights that I bring to the classroom every single day. I am becoming a better math educator because of the ideas she shares and I use her language to help me explain to parents just what we are doing in class as we grow as learners. I love that she shares so many other great math minds too and their resources. If you love this podcast follow Christina in every form, I’ve grown so much and can’t wait to keep learning!

    Best Professional Development
I love this podcast. I have listened from the beginning. I have learned so much and completely change how I teach. I took Number Sense 201 course and am a proud member of Build Math Mind Community. I have shared this podcast with other teachers in my school. I listen on the way to work and gives my something to think about and investigate with my students.

    My weekly go to!!
Being a part of the Build Math Minds community has been life changing. I first came upon Christina’s site when I took a job as a k-2 math instructional coach. At the time I had been teaching grade 5 and was involved with Math Recovery and so passionate about changing math education. I took Christina’s number sense course and just wanted more. These weekly podcasts are great quick little motivators that keep me going. She is always sharing amazing information that leaves you digging for more. If there is one thing you do weekly it should be listening to these podcasts. Thank you Christina for all you do and the more people who listen the better chance we have at truly changing math education.

    Math Addiction
I just recently started listening to podcasts on my daily commute, and Build Math Minds is one of my favorites. I love how she always expresses the “why” behind needed mindset or instructional changes and gets me to evaluate how my practice is measuring up. A recent one (3/1/20) focused on the book, Choral Counting and Counting Collections. I think this book is an important read because it lets you know the importance of beginning and continuing both these things from pre-k through 5th grade. Too often, counting exercises or activities are seen as unnecessary after 1st or 2nd grade; a false belief that this book makes clear. As the Recovering Traditionalist has been known to say, “Number sense isn’t taught; it’s caught!”

    Sparking Major Change
I love listening to podcasts and stumbled upon this one as a suggestion. From the moment I started listening I knew this was something my school needed. Number sense has been a large struggle school wide. Our entire school is changing how we’re teaching math based on me listening to this podcast and sharing the fantastic ideas and advice I received.

    Great Podcast!
I have just been introduced to your podcast, and they are extremely informative. As a 2nd great teacher, I followed your Number Sense video lessons. You do a great job on introducing a progressive way to teach children math. Any recommendations on books I would be extremely interested in reading!

    Happy one year anniversary
I look forward to your podcast every week. Since the episodes aren’t long, I find that my Amazon shopping cart grows. I’d love a book on number talks for middle school.

    Just what I have needed...
I happened upon Christina Tondevold about 4 years ago when trying to depend my understanding of number sense. Little did I know how instrumental she would be in my personal transformation. This podcast is just the latest way that Christina has tried to utilize technology to spread the word far and wide about what needs to be done to deepen our own math understanding so that we can help students. She has exposed me to more sound research through her many platforms than any other singular person has done.

    Shares Fabulous Resources!
Christina’s Build Math Minds podcasts and Vlogs provide so many great resources. She provides great book suggestions (Choral Counting and Counting Collections from episode 51 really caught my attention) and interviews of other teaching professionals. In my role as a K-3 math interventionist, her podcast reinforces my resolve that helping students develop number sense is one of the most important things I can do. I downloaded her Number Sense assessment and use it to help tease out where disconnects in development are occurring in my students’ understanding. I look forward to each new episode!

    BMM Rocks
Ever since I was introduced to Christina Tondevold’s BMM, I am hooked. My math practice has grown SO much! I am not afraid to take risks, explore, and allow children to grapple with the math. The podcast is just an added bonus!!

Thank you for so eloquently explaining the importance of providing students with opportunities to develop their number sense. I learned so much!

    Short and sweet
These are the perfect length for me! Today’s episode about flipping the 100 chart gave me just enough info to help me see the reasoning behind the concept and a link to learn more. Love it!

    Episode 4
I was excited to have an episode to listen to on my way home from NCTM. What I loved the most was hearing Ann Elise’s journey. It felt so familiar-“beautiful key word poster in my class.” I love the quick bit of information about math running records and am already thinking of how I can implement them in my school. Short and sweet podcast, yet will bring depth to many!
