A Favorite

10 stars, 5 for Susie and 5 for Gyles. My goal is not to shout out other podcasts, but I find it funny that my favorite podcasts are all British: “something rhymes with purple”, “no such thing as a fish” and “the infinite monkey cage”. What do the names of these podcasts say about language, and more important, what does it say about me, a medical professional in Alaska!! Keep us laughing…we all need it!

My favorite pod. Susie and Gyles have such lovely voices, I could listen to them all day. Add to that, the tell great stories and play off each other so well! Of course, the topic of the pod, the English language, is endlessly fascinating. Proud to be Purple!

The evolution of language

I’m so proud to be a purple person! The English language is evolving so fast and what a pleasure to witness Susie and Gyles’s conversational language evolve along as (especially Gyles) learns and cultivates his “woke” word choices. I adore this podcast. I feel like these two folks - and Gully too - are family by now. I’ve listened to every episode and applaud your wonderful work, PurpleBosses. I live in the Ozarks and we have our own very unique hillbilly vernacular here! It’s fascinating! And the local park where I walk my dogs and listen is called Gully Park! Unfortunate hot mess

A show that promises insights about language and global culture but is overrun by inane opinions and comments from a privileged aristocrat who continues to enjoy relevance because of social connections and not intelligence. Poor Susie Dent; she’s probably been forced to deal with Gyles by producers. Susie should get her own show and drop the unnecessary input of a self-righteous name-dropper who is clearly faking interest in the topic of language in order to get a paycheck.

One of the rare joys of being a completist is finding a collection which one not only needs to consume, but which one also WANTS to consume in its entirety. Something Rhymes With Purple is such a find. At this writing I am 23 episodes in, with 87 still ahead of me. I feel positively wealthy.

Wonderful! A great escape from real life.

This show is a bit of an oasis. Susie and Giles are so sweet and wonderful, and I’m learning so much. With everything going on in the world, it’s nice to stick this podcast on and listen to people who are so passionate and smart. I will be listening to every episode, maybe more than once.

Would be a great podcast without Gyles

I’m no prude and enjoy an off-color joke as much as the next person, but his constant interruptions with third grade sexual humor ruin this podcast for me. He often talks over Susie when she is making a point I’m actually interested in. Worse yet, when she tries to make the point again, he talks over her yet again. Gyles, you obviously amuse yourself but not all of us share your amusement. Let Susie finish her sentences and I’ll be back but it’s an unsubscribe for now.

Susie Dent is one of the most patient people in the world to put up with the old dude’s incessant name drops and stories of things that happened 40 years in the past, but she’s super insightful and when he allows her time to talk, delivers a treasure trove of awesome information!

Great podcast

I discovered this podcast because of “8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown,” a mash-up of a famous word-and-numbers TV game show in the UK and a comedy show. The “resident lexicographer,” Susie Dent, co-hosts and I stumbled across this. It’s just perfect; I can hone my language-trivia skills and home in on words I can add to my repertoire.

In the US, Seuss is pronounced soose which rhymes with loose. I enjoy the podcast as I, too, love words.

For as long as I can remember I have loved words. I have kept journals of words that I like and that make me smile. I thought I was a little weird for doing this, but when I found this podcast I was overjoyed! These are my people...my fine Purple People. A favorite for sure!

Absolutely Wonderful

Two thoroughly enjoyable people having delightful conversations about the origin of words. But the podcast is so much more than that. The humor, digressions, and asides make this podcast hugely entertaining as well as educational. Let's hope Gyles and Susie have a long running hit with this. If you liked the old BBC program, My Word, you'll love this.

The Platinum Standard for Language Podcasts

Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth are the platinum standard regarding language. I first heard them working together on the Gyles Brandreth show Wordaholics, in which Susie Dent sometimes appeared with three other panelists. This podcast features just the two of them, and they are a joy to listen to. They obviously love language, and they do not judge. They delve deeply into its history and how it is used today. No other show about language comes close.

Delightful

Two genial and knowledgeable hosts make for a very relaxing and entertaining stroll through the weeds of the English language. Without Gyles to lure Susie off the path of the discussion the podcast might resemble more closely NPR’s more focused A Way With Words. As it is it’s a lovely contrast.

The soft, calm, tones of Suzie with the devil may care attitude of Miles makes for a great podcast. I laugh and I learn. Perfect combination.

Educational, Fun and Charming

Love listing to this podcast as the hosts are always charming and there is such an awful lot to learn each time. Besides hearing about the origins of words, it is fascinating to learn of the times and life occurring around that origin as well.

Gyles, quit interrupting...

I really enjoy that this show on balance. My only serious gripe is that Gyles really has a bad habit of talking right over Susie quite frequently, and it is quite annoying. I enjoy a lot of what Gyles has to say, especially when he talks about games and such, but he seems to run on a bit, often diverting away from where Susie is trying to go. Perhaps just a bit more coordination or planning would be helpful?

Fabulous New Find!

Love Susie in Dictionary Corner on "Catdown"! She makes learning about new words fun and interesting. I love her stories about how words came to evolve over hundreds of years into something similar but new. I would love a little 7-10 minute daily podcast where Susie teaches us a new/old word and really uses it in a lot of sentences for us. Seriously, Americans need more words, bigly! Keep up the great job!

I'm a lover of languages and as such was delighted to hear about this new podcast from Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth. It's quick, witty, and very interesting. As I am sitting here in the States writing this review, I especially enjoyed the second episode in which they dove into the world of American English. Looking forward to hearing more!
