Value Investing with Legends

Investing #158

Value investing is more than an investment strategy — it’s a fundamental way of thinking about finance. Value investing was developed in the 1920s at Columbia Business School by professors Benjamin Graham and David Dodd, MS ’21. The authors of the classic text, Security Analysis, Graham and Dodd were the very pioneers of their field and their security analysis principles provided the first rational basis for investment decisions. Despite the vast and volatile changes in the economy and securities markets during the last several decades, value investing has proven to be the most successful money management strategy ever developed. Value investors’ success over the second half of the twentieth century proved not only the validity of the value approach, but its preeminence over even the most widely taught and practiced modern investment theory, which was developed in the 1950s and ’60s and remains dominant even today. Our mission today is to promote the study and practice of Graham & Dodd’s original investing principles and to improve investing with world-class education, research, and practitioner-academic dialogue. In this podcast you will hear from some of the world’s greatest investors, their views on the investment management industry, how they developed their investment process and how they see the field changing over time.

    Dalio Episode
The Ray Dalio episode was great. It was interesting to hear the backstory of Bridgewater and his current market thoughts.

Change the podcaster ; speakers are great
Podcaster should start listening more and speak less! I’m here to get into minds of incredible value investors, not here to be distracted by podcaster every time.

    Amazing guests. Cringeworthy host.
Sad to see such poor interviewing considering the caliber of the guests. Tanos routinely interrupts guests while leaving the topic at hand to die. A real shame. He also feels the need to insert his own esoteric and usually boring stories throughout the interview. It’s like watching a cringeworthy dinner party conversation.

    Great podcast. But..
Host is a host. Just stop talking and let the guest talk. Take notes and then ask questions once the guest finishes answering.

Please let the interviewees develop their thoughts
I love the podcast, and clearly the host and the interviewee have valuable experience to share. But one comment for the host: please, please, PLEASE!!!...allow the guest to fully develop their thoughts. I feel like while they’re in mid-thought, they’re abruptly interrupted with a new question and the conversation shifts without a full explanation of the interviewee’s opinions.

    Guests are awesome,but
host talks too much, too focused on lecturing

    Excellent Guests, Below Average Host
The guests themselves of the podcasts are excellent and what they share is extremely valuable. However, the host at best is average. He talks waaay to much. Perhaps he should utilize Warren Buffett’s Punchcard analogy and apply it to the number of words he is allowed to speak during an interview.

    Great podcast
High quality interviewing, keep up the good work Tano!

    Bad interviewer
The guests are great. The interviewer seems confused about who’s supposed to be talking. In the one I’m listening to right now, he’s speaking four to five times as much as the guy he’s supposedly interviewing, and it ruins the podcast when he does this.

    Great interviews, horrific interviewer
Two words for the interviewer - stop talking. I’m conflicted about this podcast. I adore the intellect and value of those interviewed, but I think Tanos does a horrific job interviewing. Please let the people talk!

Thank you for this wonderful podcast
Lots of great guests and the interviewer is doing a good job taking into account feedback. A hidden gem for sure. Hopefully you can interview more special situation investors like Joel!

    Unparalleled
A fantastic collection of interviews with some of the brightest minds in value investing. The context explains and reinforces the time-tested principles of sound capital deployment in a thorough and enjoyable format. Essential listening.

    Host talks too much
The guests are all great, but the interviewer puts his voice into the conversation too much. He introduces his questions too much and says too much before getting to the point. He should just ask the question and let the guest talk. A single sentence question with no introduction can be powerful...

    Please stop interrupting
The host’s interview skill really need some improvement. Don’t get me wrong, the legends are great and the topics are very informative. But keeping interrupting them during the conversion does nothing but making the understanding and fluidness of the content worse.

    Host needs improvement
Host is too conversational with interviewers. At times he will speak over or interrupt the guests. He doesn’t recognize that no one is on this pod to learn his views but that of the legends.
  • VenturaBlvd
I can’t understand the host accent.
This is not the problem of the host. It is my problem but too frustrating for me to work through this.
