I sit working on illustrations listening to Guiseppe talking to so many people. I am binge listening. He is such a good interviewer and unlike what some might say he lets everyone talk. I feel better working towards my goals as an illustrator. I joined as a Patreon because I enjoy it so much. I have never done Patreon for anyone before. Just listen you will get so much information. Love it

We artists and writers live on little islands of our own creativity without much direct mentorship or community. I’ve found many “mentors” through each interview and through Giuseppe, this podcast is a bridge into that world. Thank you so much! I just listened to the Jaleen Grove episode and I knew I had to leave a review! It was informative and interesting. I loved hearing her take on the history and future of illustration. I’m an older concept art student with knowledge gaps about past illustrators and industry trends so this podcast was fantastic to find. I’ve listened to a few episode so far and they haven’t disappointed. I hope to hear more from female illustrators in the future, and the expectations of artists within their fields as a whole.

This is my favorite podcast (and pretty much the only podcast I listen to right now). I’ve learned so much about the publishing industry, especially from the perspective of art directors so advanced in their career it’s been incredible hearing their thoughts. Really inspiring and motivating learning how people have started their careers. And like others have mentioned I really appreciate the honesty. Would recommend to anyone looking to work in the childrens publishing industry, I also love how there are guests from other industries such as animation.

I love this show. Giuseppe brings the audience in on conversations with people across the field of illustration from agents to veteran artists. It’s an affirming, honest, and practical show that has helped me think about my process and career, and made me feel not so alone in my struggles as a freelance illustrator!

I love this podcast. It is educational to hear the many perspectives of people working in illustration. There are so many kinds of journeys and it makes me feel less overwhelmed about whether or not I’m doing illustration the ‘right way’. Also working alone in the studio most times, there aren’t many others I can talk shop with, so this is a good supplemental. Thanks for sharing!

I love this podcast! It's enjoyable, relaxing and informative!

Castellano is very knowledgeable about all sorts of topics having to do with illustration: the history, the artists, the publishing industry, etc. This makes for very interesting discussions with all of those that he interviews. It can be both provocative and inspirational.

Sometimes being an illustrator can feel lonely, but listening to the Illustration Department's podcast makes you feel you have coworkers to hang out with. I learn something new in every episode, and Giuseppe and his guests always inspires me. I haven't missed one podcast so far, and can't wait for what's coming up next!

Giuseppe Castellano always has such interesting and informative guests on his podcast. It is my go to as I practice my craft of illustrating. Giuseppe himself is so knowledgable and down to earth. He has really inspired me to dig deeper into the world of illustrating.

The Illustration Department is always great! Guiseppe’s background as an art director from the publishing industry provides such an interesting perspective. The guests he interviews are so varied and compelling with useful tips, inspiration and insight. It’s a must listen if you are an illustrator looking to improve your skills and knowledge of the business.

A great array of guests - always talented artists or professionals in the field, all with plenty of experience to share. Guiseppe sets a chill, informal mood and asks insightful questions... And sometimes the topic meander away from illustration and into just plain Life, which is also enjoyable. I always enjoy this podcast.

The interviews are personable and instructive and tackle nearly every angle of interest. If you are a serious student of illustration you will quickly recognize some of the titans of the business as you scroll the list. Giuseppe interviews the well known and names you should know, but might not have heard of to date. It’s a great listen while you’re drawing or painting, and every episode offers those essential Easter eggs that will surely help you in your own work. Highly recommended!

I'm a bit biased here because I've taken Giuseppe's classes at the Illustration Department and attend his weekly critique group, but I absolutely love his podcast and what he offers to illustrators like me. He's always so helpful in his feedback and structures his podcast in such a way as to help every artist no matter where he/she is in his/her career. I'm so thankful to be a part of his forum, critique group, and podcast family!

I'm at the part of my career where I don't really have a career. And the goal of being an illustrator seems kind of impossible and far off. I like this podcast because it makes it seem less impossible, and I can see that there are real people out there who actually do become illustrators. And even if I may never be as good as some of the illustrators on the podcast, it turns that impossible into a solid thing, a surmountable obstacle which can be measured against real life actions.

Such an informative podcast. Giuseppe interviews key players in the creative arts world and is such a pleasure to listen to.

Love this podcast but can we edit out all the parts in almost every episode of talking about moving away from the city?

I cannot wait for Tuesdays for this podcast to show up in my feed and every day after Tuesday is a little bit harder to get though. I have listened to every episode and many more than once. I often return to Guiseppe’s conversation with Yuko. I have also shared the episode about copyright with other artists looking to sort out that whole mess. Giuseppe is just so kind and thoughtful and easy to listen to. I will keep coming back for this. I guess I can only write one review but I do have one tiny note: the outro is always much louder than the conversation which is a bit jarring for those of us listening on earbuds with busy hands.

I love so much about this podcast it's hard to choose something to highlight, but there are little bit of fascinating backstory Castellano adds that I fully enjoy, and I appreciate the thoughtful direction he gives these conversations with so many interesting people.

I love listening to this station while working on my illustrations. It feels like I’m working in a studio surrounded by the mentors with diverse backgrounds but who share the same interests as me. It’s such a motivation booster, especially in the time of pandemic. As a book designer and illustrator, I thoroughly enjoy all the behind-the-scenes and “side-tracked” stories from both the publisher’s and the illustrator’s perspective. I thank the host for carefully considered guests and the insightful questions, and the guests’ openness in sharing their invaluable experiences and lessons.

Every week I’m more and more surprised by the guests they have here. It feels like someone gathered a universal “illustrators I wish I’ve met” list and interviewed them. The notes are also great to look at, you’ll find alt least a new illustrator you like or one you love per week! Thanks for putting all this illustration love together <3

This is of my favorite podcasts to listen to! I come away from each episode with a new bit of knowledge or inspiration, and it’s just really enjoyable to listen to. The interviews are interesting and informative, and I appreciate the perspective and thoughts Giuseppe shares as well. Definitely recommend this podcast!

It’s hard to find a really great podcast in the illustration world. I really enjoy listening to lots of different kinds of people telling their stories from within the same industry. I do like that the host poses some of the same questions to many guests, because not everyone will answer it the same and all those answers are valuable. For example, I did everything "wrong” as a new illustrator, and ended up with an agent and a 4-book publishing deal using a method that most folks in the industry would advise against. I just feel like this host kind of leads the witness a little bit, and ends up in a borderline argument if he disagrees. He comes across a little jaded and seems pretty closed off to work flows, styles, and processes that differ from what he thinks is “correct.” I hope he’ll work on being a little more open-minded and actually considering the experiences of his guests and allowing them to speak without contradicting them too vehemently.

I enjoy this podcast and I love being exposed to and learning from so many great artists. My main criticism is that half the time, the host doesn’t allow his guests to tell their own stories. It becomes pretty redundant when he summarizes a story or fact from their past and then asks them to comment on it after. It got particularly annoying with the Rebecca Green interview. I love her, but I feel like she didn’t really get to tell her own story. It was all told from the host’s point of view.

The conversations are always interesting and I love that the guests aren't the same 50 people you see on every other creative podcast answering the same 12 questions that everyone always asks. The episodes always strike the perfect balance of getting to know the guest as a person and also as a professional. Giuseppe does a great job of diversifying the kinds of people he talks to. The interviews include unique insights into what it's like to be in the illustration industry, how things have changed, and where they are going.

I do not listen to too many podcasts, but this one is a must. Each guest has been interesting and informative, whether it is an artist, agent, art director, etc. And Giuseppe’s easy going manner has a good balance between questions and listening. Tune in!
