    Amazing podcast
I just started listening to this, and already I’m engrossed in the narratives. I used to only listen to Real Dictators, but now I where to find another great podcast on dictators. Great job, keep it up!

Poor use of time and excruciatingly basic
It takes around 5-6 minutes to actually get into new info. The first bit is repetitive announcements that are present in every episode, basic prep, and a couple ads. Then you have 2 more ad breaks and the last 2-3 minutes is useless foreshadowing that is going to be talked about in the next episode in the same scope anyway. Basically, there’s 10-13 minutes of uselessness in each episode and for a 50 minute podcast, it’s extremely aggravating; especially since the actual info is so surface level in scope and poorly focused. Boring info, distractingly basic host flow, and poor use of time makes this show seem low effort and tries to make money off too many ads.

    No longer middle ground
Use to be a great podcast and actually learned something about history. Unfortunately, now politics have taken over like everything else. You can distinctly hear the sharp left turn. Will be unsubscribing.

    Leftist propaganda/misinformation
Sad to say, I enjoyed this podcast for awhile. Then, I heard the one on the young turks. The narrator refers to them as far right which is irrefutably false. They were leftists and believed in the far left ideology of using social revolution to install radical tyrants. They do so while claiming some power or single marginalized group of individuals are the source of all suffering in society and inequality. Pathetic to link the young Turks to President Trump by associative language like the C U P wanted to make the empire great again. Shut up fools.

    Thank you and good bye.
Wonderful podcast full of exceptionally delivered history. Both need to understand how the word ‘myriad’ works. Hint: It’s an uncountable number. But, gonna say goodbye to a stellar podcast. May Spotify bring you joy!

    Hate changing voices
Every two sentences they swap speakers. Why? It’s difficult to listen to and difficult to record I imagine. Great info but I can’t listen to for long without getting a headache. Or maybe anxiety too. I saw one comment that the constant switching of speakers triggers anxiety by those who have ADHD and I would have to Agree. I really wish I could listen all the way through with just one speaker or less swapping of speakers.

“Make the Ottoman Empire great again” is what they said. I wonder why? This is a leftist teaching tool.

    About Fidel Castro Chapter 1
Camilo Cienfuegos was neither Marxist nor communist. He was the most honest patriot of the XX Cuban century and that led him to death.

    Took a turn
Went from really good show about dictators to Fidel Castro wasn’t so bad, he taught kids to read and we should thank Ho Chi Minh. I feel like I’m in one of Ho’s re-education camps.

    Ummmmm...
Nothing like a podcast trying to turn a brutal Communist thug into a sympathetic figure who we should respect and be thankful for. Are u kidding?! Ho achieved independence for Vietnam? I’m not sure a Communist dictatorship and independence are the same thing. I’d say we should ask the Vietnamese their thoughts on Ho but most of them are dead.

    A critique
I like the idea of this show but I have 2 critiques. One, the biographies are a bit too basic. Two, it doesn’t engage with leftist critiques of figures like Stalin and Mao. For instance Orwell was a socialist who was a prolific critique of totalitarian ideologies.

    Fun and engaging
Fun and engaging podcast. The stories are rich and entertaining. Richard and Kate are great. Though I dislike the back/forth narration in other parcast shows, it works with these two for me. Here’s to many more shows!

    Love the show, but...
All episodes are not in the library. For example, I only got part 1 of Jean Lafitte and Part 3 of the Chinese Lady pirate.

    Not really an Argentinian dictator.
The people were protesting, the country was open, foreign journalists were available, the media was not fully controlled. Just a strongman, not a dictator. Left wing dictators are way more... dictators.

    Very good!
    I love this podcast!
  • big-fun
Unlistenable unfortunately. The narration style distracts from the subject.
The male host and female host take turns emotionlessly reading every sentence. So one sentence is mechanically read by the man. The next sentence is read by the women. The next by the man. Then the next by the woman. The awkward arhythmic sing-song effect this gives is utterly distracting. If sounds could makes person seasick, this podcast would have me reaching for the Dramamine. It’s really too bad. The subject matter and writing seem like they’d be awesome.

The best combo of history and true crime.
I absolutely love this podcast! They strike a perfect balance of history & true crime while also keeping it entertaining. A great amount of detail in the horrible atrocities while including great facts about the time period while also having it not come across as too boring/dense. They have done a great job with the series so far and I look forward to more episodes coming.

    Hypocrisy
You talk about how there is no modern politician like hitler and then compare the deep state problem with nationalist accusation of the Jews. First off there is plenty of evidence to support the supposition of the deep state issue at least on some level and it is not a blanket racial or ethnic accusation. That was a garbage statement to begin with and hypocritical when compared with you previous statement.

    They deliver the history
Deep dive into what makes these guys tick. It’s intriguing how malleable people were and continue to be to messaging that is against their self-interests. Looking forward to more episodes!

    Dictator Fidel Castro
I really enjoy your podcast but I really have to question why you put President Fulgencio Batista ahead of Cuban Marxist Dictator Fidel Castro who is responsible for the suffering of deaths of thousands of Cubans

    Tedious Hosts and Format
I’ve grown tired of the parcast show hosts and format. Don’t like the robotic voices of hosts. The segment breaks that are supposed to build tension and keep interest feel strange and sometimes forced.

    America is BAD!!!!!
On this podcast and the Kingpin podcast, America is the bad guy. It is because of America that bad people rape, torture, and kill. That is not the case. People are responsible for their own actions. America is not perfect, but we try to help other people and other nations. That is a lot more than any other country in the world. America and Americans give more money and help than any other country. Many countries would collapse if we acted like other countries.

    Ignorance
In the second episode on Mao they said that China’s current leader is not a murderer (comparing him to Mao). They however acknowledged the existence of the Uyghur camps and seemingly downplayed what they are & outright ignored the fact these death camps have surpassed death counts the Nazis reached, information on this genocide was household, mainstream & not debatable when the episode was published.... very tasteless move in the writing.

    The BEST!
I LOVE this podcast, and the depth of the content. They tell an excellent story about the subject and you get a great education. I completely disagree with “Time” and their snarky review. If they don’t have enough time to listen to a very educational and interesting podcast there are plenty of others out there for people with short attention spans. I highly recommend this podcast for anyone who wants a full, compelling and complete historical account of the dictators they cover. Keep up the great work.

    Subject matter is great but..
I have tried so many times to listen to podcasts on the network and I give up every time because of these hosts. I LOVE the subject matter. HOWEVER, I can’t follow the stories because of the way they are told. The hosts share a very robotic narration, going back and forth every other line.... The back and forth is EXTREMELY distracting. I have ADHD and I’ve realized this triggers my anxiety because I can’t follow what they are saying when they switch so quickly. I want to enjoy their content... But please for the love of God, at least switch every other paragraph or maybe trade narrating different parts of the story. It’s so frustrating.

    Great History Podcast
Great podcast! Some of my history teachers in high school and college took an easy route when it came to covering history this helps sure up your knowledge of certain historical events. Using this while doing your own background knowledge finding is important because history isn’t black and white. Keep up the great work!

    Time
Something most young people don’t have - TIME!!! Can you cut these down to a half hour or less? I don’t need a full biography of a guy.Just finished the first episode of Pol Pot. It didn’t get interesting until the last two minutes. What a waste of time. You guys must get paid by the minute.

    Queen Mary Tudor
You are rewriting the history of these important Catholic figures Queen Mary was not a dictator she executed mostly people who were in prison and awaiting execution before she ascended to power. The remainder were political dissidents who were constantly plotting against her. What about her father who executed 150 people on the march of peace alone and her illegitimate successor Elizabeth who slaughtered 500 odd Catholics? Also queen isabella of Spain was no dictator and the Inquisition was not a genocide the heretics posed a threat to Spanish society because heretics were causing violent revolutions and uprisings across the rest of Europe Spain was tired of division because they had just finished a 770 year war against Muslim rulers and needed unity. Also the Inquisition only executed 2,000 out of the 10,000 people they put on trial. Also torture was used on ALL major courts at the time to extract confessions. P.S. London drew and quartered people and France boiled people alive as forms of execution. Everyone else covered I agree is a dictator
  • Barghus
    Entertaining, but often historically inaccurate
I liked this better when I was listening to shows about dictators that I’m not as familiar with. Once it wandered into some of my “wheelhouses” (Ancient Rome in particular), I noticed GLARING mistakes which now make we doubt the info I’ve heard in previous shows where I wasn’t as familiar with the subjects. Caveat emptor.
  • Jellygu4
    lol
So if actual ruling monarchs Isabella l and her granddaughter Mary l were “dictators” does that apply to other monarchs who did worse? Are they dictatorial as well? And the “toxic masculinity” excuse sounds sexist to suggest the male dictators somehow did what they did because of their gender basically. That’s no different than saying a woman goes on a rampage because she’s emotional and weak due to her gender. And did they really compare the Jewish conspiracy to the Deep State, which has more truth to it? smh

    Pronunciation of Latin Names
As a former Classicist, I really loved the episodes about Nero, but the “G” in Gnaeus is silent, so that grated on me. Also, C’s are pronounced like K’s.
