What Is Music?: A Music Podcast About Music

41

A podcast about discographies. A different artist every season. Currently in Season 6! Join Adam, Steve, and Lucas, as they go album by album, track by track, to find out if context can change your experience of music, how people become obsessed with artists, and to ultimately answer the question 'what is music?' Expect in-depth analysis, tedious tangents, controversial music opinions, and an exhaustive attitude to context. Also expect to find out more about the artists (and the hosts) than anyone could ever want to know! Previous seasons have covered Manic Street Preachers, Muse, Billie Eilish, and Radiohead!

    What is nu-dad rock?
A fun hang with likable hosts, but who are unapologetically stuck in their nostalgia for alternative rock bands that haven’t been relevant in decades. Great news for superfans who want to spend years exhausting over every REM album, but if you enjoy a more diverse spectrum of music, or feel that an endless parade of Manic Street Preachers isn’t worth hundreds of hours of scrutiny, then you may find yourself alienated by the otherwise admirably committed deep dive format.

I laughed and learned all the things
I really don’t laugh at stuff in any form of media. No clue why. So I was shocked to listen to this podcast and find myself on the verge of tears from the beyond witty banter. You guys are hysterical. I love it. Please do these podcasts forever.

Like nerdy banter with your smartest mates
Incredible detail and context for some of the best music. The banter and personalities do not get old. Love it

Came here for the Radiohead season and got so much more
I had initially seen the What is Music podcast twitter account recommended in my feed and decided to check it out since they were covering Radiohead. I was instantly sucked in. So much great history and context covered, but nothing is taken too seriously. Makes complex music ideas more accessible for someone who isn’t musically inclined, but loves music and learning about it. They talk about music the way I wish I had someone to talk about it with! Lots of laughs and thought provoking ideas. You’ll never have a bad time with the big mates!

    Really good listen
It’s been a lot of fun to follow these guys through Manic Street Preachers to Muse to Billie Eilish and get different perspectives on each artist. I really appreciate them inserting their individual personalities and experiences into each episode. I listen to a lot of music podcasts and it is always much more interesting to feel like you “get to know” the people doing the podcast than if they were to do nothing but strictly talk about the music. I’ll be looking forward to hearing their take on any artist that they cover in the future.

    Really enjoying
I found this podcast a few weeks ago after reading about it on the Muse subreddit. I’m currently in the middle of a “Muse resurgence” after not listening for about a decade, and I’m loving the analysis, the banter, and the personal anecdotes related to the music. I was particularly touched by Lucas’s willingness to express what “Starlight” means to him. I also frequently find myself laughing along with the discussion which is much appreciated. I’m listening with a different ear and am finding myself experiencing each song in different ways. Anyway, well done and thank you for producing this podcast.

    These Guys Are A Riot!
I found this podcast on the Muse subreddit. I was expecting to learn new things about one of my favorite bands but I’ve also been laughing hysterically at these three guys. It’s like being in a room with friends (remember those days?), chatting and joking around. I may just have to listen to season one, even though I don’t like Manic Street Preachers, just to listen to these guys carry on. Very entertaining.

    Big Mates. Big fun
I started listening to these guys as a fan of the Manics... but wondered if I would still enjoy when they started covering other bands - I needn’t have worried! Insightful, interesting and most of all - loads of laughs and fun!
