1,822

Smoke Screen is an investigative documentary series on people with complex motives and morals. Follow characters on the fringes of society — con artists, cult leaders, corrupt politicians — as they seduce their marks and bend communities to their will. Join us as we unravel their stories and bring justice to the people they’ve deceived. SEASON 8: My Fugitive DadAshley’s Dad was her favorite person in the world. He drove fast cars and sold them for a living. He was a scratch golfer and the love of her Mum’s life. Ashley thought she knew him better than anyone. But at 38, she found out he wasn’t who he said he was. Inspired by his favorite movie the Thomas Crown Affair, he had pulled off a robbery in Cleveland then disappeared. It turns out he evaded the authorities for half a century, living in their sleepy Massachusetts town. His secret upended his family’s life, but another family’s too. Because from the moment this 20-year-old vault teller escaped with $215,000 in 1969, Deputy U.S. Marshal John Elliott made it his life’s mission to bring him to justice. After he retired, his son even took up his mantle. For this six episode podcast, host Jonathan Hirsch teams up with Ashley Randele to unravel the mystery of how her Dad got away with it, and ultimately, why he left behind everyone and everything to start over. Daughter
It was okay until the daughter started her performance.

    Trying too hard
I should admit upfront that I couldn’t get through the first episode, it was like listening some eight-year-old kid with a flashlight under a blanket in gleefully reading a Hardy boy’s mystery out loud. Because the thing is, when you’ve got a good story, and this is a good one, you need to just tell it. Don’t waste our time or your energy by relishing every other paragraph as if they were all so fascinating and a real page turner. Just tell the tale, that’s the real secret, just tell it.

    Come On People
Clearly the”Daughter” as well as the other voices heard were actors. Why not tell us that upfront and limit the negative reviews ? And yes, way too many “mum” references. A good story that could have been done more professionally.

    Interesting yet prolonged
This is a fascinating story. However, if it was shortened to 3 or 4 it would have maintained a greater degree of fascination.

    Daughter, please.
The story was interesting but the daughter is unlikeable. I did not enjoy listening to her. Could have quoted some things she said and let that be enough. He didn’t want his story told and she refused to honor his wishes. She’s the real villain here. I’m still mad she openly told this.

Didn’t expect to be blown away
Yes, the daughter sounds overly rehearsed when speaking but this story was intriguing. I can’t imagine what this would have been like to experience this as a wife or daughter, although I think I would have seen the red flags and dug in. Unexpectedly, I was brought to tears on the last episode, it was so emotional.

    LOVED!!
I absolutely loved this show!! Great reporting and extremely heartfelt. Ultimately someone’s story doesn’t necessarily depict who they are or what they struggle with. Loved this podcast!!

    This wasn’t not the worst….
It may not have been the worst, but it certainly was far from good. It was probably in the bottom percentage of podcasts. I’ve listened to. I feel completely deceived by the title and I think that’s why I have such a low rating and think so low of this whole entire podcast. It definitely mentions the bank heist if that’s what you wanna call it, but when I say it mentions it, that’s all that it really does. It doesn’t go into much about the criminality of this man the act, how he survived for so long, etc. it was very dry and more about this woman complaining. It was such a, “poor is me” podcast that I couldn’t get past any of that part of it, because it took up such a large quantity of the whole story. Truthfully, I hope this woman got a lot out of this cathartically because she’s not gonna win any awards and I’m blowing away that anyone else cares to listen to this podcast. It was such a boring, bland, vanilla, she told. it could’ve been so much more and so much more interesting if she went into what the title called but instead she cried herself all the way to bed! Too bad I’ll never get the time listening to this podcast back in my life….

    The daughter
    Ashley is awesome!

    Interesting story, terrible narration
First of all, the daughter is truly an awful person. Her father spent his entire life living in obscurity, asked her to keep his secret and what does she do? She goes to him the next day and tells him he HAS to tell his secret and if he doesn’t, she will. Then after he dies, she goes to the police and rats him out in the ‘name of authority’… and replaces her father with the man that spent his entire life (and failed) trying to arrest him. What a pathetic excuse for a daughter. Why the heck does she constantly call her mother ‘mum’? Possibly one of the most grating, irritating things I’ve ever heard in a podcast where it felt like every time the story is starting to lull me into zoning out and getting into it, her annoying, fake voice would pop on and go on and on about her ‘mum’. Overall, it’s a fascinating story but it’s really stretched out and would have been so much better had they interviewed the daughter once and it was over. IMO she ruined the podcast for me and if you’re considering listening, I warn you to reconsider due to how annoying it became.

I thought Alex and Ashley did an excellent job. This was very interesting. I hope they do another podcast together.

    Skip the daughter’s part
Why is the daughter talking so fake as if this wasn’t real life or her real father. She’s trying too hard to sound quirky or interesting but she sounds like a extremely fake hired actress. The host should not have invited her - “my mum” 😏
  • MegLovesAustralia
    The daughter ruins it
I was so excited to hear more about this story, and the daughter ruins it all for me! She was too dramatic and really obnoxious. Mum? Why does she call her mom mum? Every 30 seconds. This isn’t Australia or England. I don’t think I can finish this season. 😵‍💫😵‍💫 She’s too much. I agree with the other reviews on this!
  • Taylorbreez
The daughter ruined this for me
Good story but the daughter’s dramatic tone & story telling was way too much. Sounds so inauthentic. Very off putting. I cringe when she talks. Just speak normal.
  • Emilyburn01
    Sucked me in
I listened to the whole thing in two days after starting it on a walk! I really enjoyed it, I just want to know where the money went 🤯

    Lost and confused
I really really want to like this podcast, but I’m just so lost with the story telling I’m not following much 🤷🏾‍♀️
  • Mailman matt
    Well put together
I’m a mailman who hasn’t listened to thousands of podcasts. This season had me listening to every word. I went through the whole season in a shift. Can’t wait to listen to the other 5 seasons. This is a must listen

    Great story
What a great story I love mysteries I listen to all kinds of podcasts while I’m working and this one was much different but wow! I’m trying not to cry at the end listening to her letter to her dad while I’m at work! What a good story!
  • h1ghfriend
Turned it off at episode 3
The first two episodes were really interesting but once the female host jumped on, it ruined it for me. She said “mum” so many times that I turned it off and probably won’t ever finish this podcast to find out more about this Tom guy.
  • Kimboslice259
    Great story… hate “mum”!!
It’s a great story but hearing “mum” every 5 seconds erks me! I wish they had just interviewed the daughter and moved on. Can’t stand her..

minus stars b/c of the daughter
IDK who thought the daughter was a good addition to this podcast but she was a big deterrent for me. She stuck me as having an affect that was self-centered and phony and apparently had no emotional loyalty to a man that by her and others’ accounts was a good man, husband and father. Cheap shot for a small drop of fame. He made a mistake at a young age likely due to the extenuating circumstances of an abusive home life and abandonment by both parents. I was glad to know he found a wonderful woman and they both felt they were the loves of one another lives. The money didn’t make him rich but he wound up that way. Interesting story minus the fatuous daughter.

    Some people are insensitive
I was reading a few reviews AFTER I listened to the podcast. My heart aches at all the insensitive comments that were written. Ashley lost her father! Let me write it again Ashley, who had nothing to do with her fathers crime, lost her father! I enjoyed the story and the story telling. Mum was certainly heard, loud and clear, but not enough to take away from the podcast itself. I think many forgot, Tom also lost a life. I’m LOVING that he got away from a bad situation and was able to start over. Yes, wrong to rob bank…but…not like he made career of robbing banks! The podcast tells a story, a desperate man(boy) who simply left. I think Ashley did a fabulous job, not to make me feel sorry for her dad, but I wished I met him. May he rest in peace.

    My Fugitive Dad (Season 8)
Thanks for the deep dive into this story, after having heard some of it on the national media. I would have been shocked to learn the truth about my spouse/ father just as Kathy & Ashley did. Thanks for covering BOTH sides of this bank heist—it’s so helpful to hear from both sides of this real life event and the subsequent lives/experiences involved. In situations like this, we (the public) may only hear one side.
  • Mom Doin her best
Going to start it over, it was that good!
I loved this season, My Fugitive Dad. The podcast mixed in true crime along with a daughters love for her father. I don’t know why people are so annoyed with her voice, she isnt a professional podcaster and put her self out there for this. Show her some grace people! The final episode with her tribute to her dad was beautiful. As a daughter that lost her dad when I was in my early 20s it moved me. He was a flawed man as we all are with seemingly good intentions. Thank you for sharing this story with the world.
  • Ksanab
Cool story but really seems to be stretched out
I am legit stopping because I can’t listen to this woman say “mum” one more time. You totally could have just interviewed her once and be done with the daughters pov. The story is cool enough but not for more than a few episodes. I understand content is hard to come by but lord this one is a down grade from binge stories. I might have to unsubscribe

    Season 8
Enjoyed the story, but they stretched it out and dramatized it more than necessary.
  • timmy1968😳
Good but nauseating scripts at times
Clearly the daughter and others were reading a script and it was a bit nauseating at times. However the story was cool. The most aggravating part was the daughter coming across as entitled, and missing out because dad didn’t carry life insurance. It also was baffling how she acted like the mom having a car payment in her 70s was somehow “normal” and part of the reason she was in dire straights.

    So boring
The daughter’s voice is terribly annoying. She’s trying too hard or something. I had to stop it once she started talking about how good looking her “Mum” was back then. Boring.
  • Presleeeee89098
    Great story, annoying cohost/daughter
Fantastic story, the host is great but my god is the daughter so annoying. Everything she says is so scripted and written out, like she’s making her acting debut.. never conversational, seems like her dad being a secret fugitive is the best thing that ever happened to her. Also agree with the annoying mum thing, you’re from the northeast not London.
  • Hazy6969
    Voice actor is so annoying
I hate the voice acting for the daughter. Doesn’t feel like a real person talking at all. Had to stop listening.

    My Fugitive Dad
The Oddcast Podcast gives the impression that I should feel sorry for the family left behind upon his death However, there are people sitting in jail having committed crimes such as his. He lived a full and profitable life, never having paid back to society for the crime committed, Never paid back the money never attoned for the anxiety for all the people he left behind. Let’s not forget this is a federal crime, and the FBI spent many years & countless amounts of money trying to solve it
  • Mamaohohoh
    Good story, tough narration
I liked this story but would’ve enjoyed a little more digging into where the money was spent. Unfortunately, the daughter is so obviously reading her scripted answers during what is meant to be conversation with the other narrator. It’s excruciating. I’m pretty picky on audio due to working in the industry but it seems that this was a common theme among listeners. I do understand that she felt compelled to be a part of the making of this project and that really shows in the last episode where she pours her heart out in the best “scripted” way she is able to. It makes sense so I held on to the end to hear every last bit and I’m glad I did. It is a compelling story. You just have to be able to hang on through these bits of the daughter who truly wants to share her dads story but isn’t able to do so in a natural way. I also found the guitar strums throughout to be very uncomfortable and amateur-sounding.

    Wouldn’t recommend
Interesting story but hard to listen too. Very theatrical narration and storytelling that seemed inauthentic and scripted.

Unique True Crime Story that is So Much More
I highly recommend this true crime podcast with a twist. This story is told with empathy from various points of view; from the daughter of the bank robber who got away with it to the two generations of law enforcement officers who ultimately solved the case some fifty years later. This podcast explores the underlying factors involved. It discusses the socioeconomic factors as well as the bank’s institutional policies that contributed to the success of the robbery. It fully discusses the impact the robbery had on the robber such as. his relationships, his life choices and his family it also discusses the ways in which the case impacted his family as well as way in impacted the law enforcement officers who made it clear life mission to bring him to justice.

    I listened for free
Don’t know what everyone is talking about. Yes, the “mum” thing was annoying. Having gotten that out of the way, I loved the show and story. Good job! Thanks

My Fugitive Dad is a snooze fest. This was a twenty minute story at best.

    Interesting Story….
These seasons are reminding me the importance of choices - we have free will to make our choices, but we cannot control the consequences of our actions/choices. The widow and daughter were brave to share their history in this podcast. I wouldn’t have been able to do it (being subjected to people’s judgment for choices Ted Conrad/Tom Randele made). I understand why the two of them decided to participate in this effort. I pray they find peace as time continues moving forward.

    Good but “mum” constantly
Agree with others. Mum…annoying. She can’t even keep it straight. Sometimes she says mom. Ridiculous

    Don’t watch
You can watch 5 episodes for free, but need a subscription to listen to the ending! Should have been clear upfront!!

    Desperate
Who would think it would be a good idea to do a podcast for free until the last episode? The first time I’ve come across this. How desperate for money do you have to be? What happened to the $215,000 in 1969 (1.7 million today) - which also addresses how bad everything is for the next generation. We’re not the generation to mess with. We’ve had the worst cards dealt to us and it’s the little things in life we enjoy. Like a nice podcast. And now we can’t even do that
  • johncalvin
    There’s no there there
Would have been a mildly interesting story for one episode. Why they thought they had enough for a series is beyond me.

Very well done and such an intriguing story. I can’t bathe Boston area was not investigated more with the Thomas Crown connection.

    A lot of nothing
This just wasn’t worthy of a series. The man committed a crime, got away with it, and lived an average life under a fake name. While I can appreciate the daughter being shocked to learn the secret about her father, the story itself really goes nowhere. Literally listening to former coworkers talk about how he drank diet Dr Pepper and smoked Salem cigarettes. Who cares? I tried to stick with it, hoping it would get more interesting and go somewhere and I realized I just didn’t care. It wasn’t compelling at all. Everybody’s families have stories; quite often they’re really only interesting to the people who lived them.
  • joshwol
U have to subscribe to listen to last ep?! Really?!
Dont listen; you have to pay to subscribe to the channel to listen to the last episode. That’s not right in my opinion. Won’t listen to any other podcasts from this channel…

Good story - can’t handle the “mums”
I am enjoying the story so far. However, the daughter constantly calling her mom “mum” Is making me crazy. It became like nails on a chalkboard.

    Great storytelling
    Great narration and storytelling.

    Not a good Dad
This seemingly gripping story is infact the limp tale of a loser. A weak man, a deceitful, pathological liar who like many liars can also sometimes be good & kind & leave a wonderful impression on people. No one is all bad but Ted /Tom was also not a good husband or Dad. He was a horrible excuse of a man who left his mother & siblings with nothing more than a note full of promises he would never keep & at the end left a wife & daughter destitute, lying to them until the bitter end where they were left to pick up the mess he left behind for them. He was a lucky man. Lucky that he wasn't caught for his crime & lucky that the people he encountered along the way were kind, fair & giving. A very lucky man.
  • Annex-8
    Trying be something it's not
Couldn't get through the first episode. They were trying so hard to make this about some deep psychological mystery or something that they could milk and stretch out for as many episodes as possible--as all podcasts try to do now. But really, this whole story is just about how changing your identify was a lot easier 40 years ago.
  • KimBatt
    Daughter’s Voice
Ugh. Interesting story.... but daughter's voice seemed off - not authentic. I still have three episodes left. I didn't subscribe. Why does she say "mum" - her mom doesn't sound British. Sounds affected. Story interesting so far.
