Sweetbitter | Queer Christianity & the Bible

145

About Sweetbitter | Sweetbitter is an investigative history podcast with a focus on queer & women's history. Each season, we explore a different corner of history, using historical figures and texts as a starting point to discuss a broader story of erasure of people with marginalized identities. Along with the listener, in collaboration with multidisciplinary experts, we untangle untold histories for a modern audience.

Season 3 | This season, we explore the history of the Bible, unsettling assumptions about the text and religious tradition. With interviews from LGBTQIA+ clergy and scholars, we break down, re-frame, and re-imagine Bible passages to reveal untold stories of queer resilience, love, and liberation. From the gay monks of the Middle Ages to the trans Pastors breaking norms in the Church today, demonstrating the women, queer people and social justice values that have always been at the heart of the Christian faith.

    The podcast I didn’t know I needed
What a treasure find! Ellie, Leesa, and Alyse are so entertaining and fun to listen to. I feel like I’m at a casual hangout while still learning a lot about Sappho and pirates. They have a wide range of experts and reputable guests on the show that really delve deep into relevant topics. I listen to Sweetbitter on my drive to and from work everyday and it just puts me in a better mood! They always make me laugh, too. My ear is really picky with people’s voices, so I don’t normally listen to podcasts, but I couldn’t pass this one up. Sweetbitter is fantastic! Can’t wait for season 3 :D

    This podcast is so needed!
After finally being fed up with how little I knew about Sappho, I decided to search for a Sappho podcast and was surprised to find just the one (as the hosts describe)! Coincidentally I have also been super curious about what ~actually~ happened in pirate history so… I came for Sappho and stayed for the pirates! The hosts do an incredible job telling stories and making history vividly come to life. Sappho and Grace O'Malley would be proud ;) P.S. hello from Boston, as well!

So much new & fab construction
I’d been low-key curious for awhile about what Sappho actually wrote, so I thought I’d check this out. (The pirate eps are calling to me for sure). The Sappho info is great, the poetry reading and deciphering is FANTASTIC for any history person. But what keeps my coming back forever is how well constructed this podcast is. Anyone putting together an interview show that wants to explain stuff, and keep the audience interested - this is a great example. For people just looking for a good listen - this is one of the best.

    a hidden gem
truly one of the best podcasts i’ve ever listened to. the hosts are all people that I want to be friends with. so many history/classics podcasts are pretentious or boring, but this one is funny, high-quality, and interesting! I originally got into it for Sappho but i can’t wait to learn about pirates - and whatever else the Sweetbitter team releases!

    Interesting and Informative
This is truly an amazing podcast. There is so much more to Sappho than I had thought. I am so glad I have got to learn more. They always make the podcasts interesting and the songs at the end are great!

what I hoped, what we need
Can't wait for the next episodes. Brilliant conversations, unexpected research. Sweetbitter does what women who love women have always done when encountering Sappho's power. In finding her, we find ourselves. Only poetry can come close to transmitting inside patriarchy what women love is/does/creates. This podcast is poetry and song.

    Love for poetry 🥰
This podcast is exactly what I hoped it would be. These ladies have not only taught me more about Sappho, but also the deep, alluring history of poetry - I’m always excited for what they will do next 😍 Love from Allie at HotR

    Amazing, beautiful, wonderful
I am not a poet and I don’t always have a way with words, but this is such a beautiful and important podcast. I’ve learned so much, cried a few times, and I feel so close to Sappho now. As a bi woman in a straight relationship, this podcast makes me feel validated and a part of the community. Thank you so much Alyse, Ellie, and Leesa. You are all goddesses!! I’m so grateful that I have the ability to contribute even just a small amount every month, to keep this wonderful show going.

    I am loving this podcast!
I have always been fascinated with Ancient Greek mythology and history, and this is such a fun way to explore more about it! It also takes a pretty special podcast to get me to take a break from binging true crime stories, and this one gets me every time. The last episode ended in a bit of a cliffhanger, and I am waiting with bated breath for the next one!!!

    The podcast I didn't know I needed
My absolute new favorite. Hosts? Charming as heck. Topic? Engaging, fascinating, surprisingly sexy. Editing? Brilliantly woven and well-paced. Songs? Siren-like (do not operate boats while listening). This show does Sappho proud.

A bright spot in the hellscape of 2020
I found this podcast bc they started following my silly little sapphic meme page on Instagram and my interest was obviously piqued. The episodes are thorough, the history is fascinating, the guests are incredibly knowledgable, the songs are a delight and, like a true daughter of Sappho, I have a crush on every host. Can’t wait to hear more :)

    Thank you!
Words cannot express how much this podcast means to me, as a lesbian history/poetry nerd. Sappho has been a looming and important figure in my life for awhile and to hear other people talk about her in a similar way that I do is just so amazing and reaffirming. Thank you so much for starting this podcast! Sappho doesn’t get enough credit as the talented poet and lyricist she is and I’m so happy that this podcast is going to expose more people to her works and help people learn about her life! As much as I love about her poems, there’s a lot about her that is such a mystery to me and the fact this podcast has scholars on to talk about her is AWESOME. Even as the Sappho nerd I am, I’m learning so again - thank you!

Funny and engaging dive on a very interesting subject
As a subject matter with which I was wholly unfamiliar, I was delighted to hear the witty banter in this historical dive into the life and works of an almost lost literary mind. Not heavy at all and incredibly informative balancing interviews with experts with commentary by women interested in learning more. A must listen for any history buff!

    More please!
Yes yes yes! Love this as part of the larger revision of the revisionist history we’ve all been fed since youth. We are seeing more and more of the female driven, queer inspired work that has been quietly leading us from hundreds of years with no acknowledgement. Thanks to podcasts like this we can finally start to drill beneath the patriarchal surface of our high school textbooks and into the well of before marginalised magic that has fed us for so long.

I love, love, love this podcast. As a Classical Civilization major AND as someone who listens to a ton of podcasts, this really speaks to me. The production value is super high, the hosts & guests are riveting, and I’m learning a lot while being highly entertained. 10/10 A+ perfect!

The deep dive into Sappho we’ve all been waiting for
From the opening lines I knew that this was going to be a great podcast and after listening to the first two podcasts I was right. I have to admit to being a bad queer and not knowing all that much about Sappho besides who she was and what she was famous for before starting. Now, after listening, I’m not only more informed but I’m captivated by Sappho and the world she lived in and the mystery that surrounds her. I highly recommend checking this podcast out, believe me you won’t be disappointed (plus there’s fun music every episode and who doesn’t love music!)

Loving this trip to Lesbos 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩
Sappho, the mother of queer ladies, is such a fascinating woman to me. I’m already loving this well researched, beautifully produced deep dive into such a pillar of queer history. I also just love listening to shows created by queer women, it feels like I’m hanging with ladies like me! I can’t wait for more ❤️
