Lost Trade

How To #224

A show focused on the trade skills that have almost been lost to history and the male and female Craftsmen that keep them alive. I am Don Gonzales, a full time saddle maker of 15 years, and I dive into the world of "supposed" forgotten skills and trades.

    Great podcast
This is a great pod cast. I’m a truck driver it has made some of my night drives go by fast when I found this in November when I started leather working. I’m so happy to see a new episode. I know there’s YouTube channel but can’t watch and drive. So the pod cast is great option for me. Keep them come Don!

Pull up a chair & listen again & again & again
Lost Trade is a gem. Each episode features a sit-down-at-the-kitchen-table type interview. Listening is like pulling up a chair and sitting awhile to hear some amazing stories, have a good chuckle, and learn something you never knew before (but may have not known you were missing). Interviews are personal and in depth and lead the listener to feel like you met some new friends and gained valuable wisdom by the end of each episode. No matter what trade, art or business you practice, you’ll find something in each episode to help you grow. Plus, you’ll learn about some unique trades and history in the process that will inspire you and open your eyes to the many art forms of work. Great for listening to as you go about your day. Lost Trade is the companion you need during those lonely times as you practice your trade.

    Wonderful/Infomative
Hey Don, I’ve followed you for a couple of years, mostly on YouTube. Your wealth of knowledge and “guy next door” vibe makes your show very enjoyable to listen to! Since getting back into leather work (that was my FIRST job out of high school), now near retirement and during COVID I decided to learn the completely HAND-MADE style of leathercraft……. No more bell skivers or mechanical clickers or sewing or stitching machines!!! I learned to saddle stitch. It’s been thanks to the generosity of makers like you and so many others that I, we have gained a level of skill that we can be proud of! For that….. THANKS Don!! 👏🏻 G of: @MuseLeathercraft

This podcast is an introduction to knowledge, skills, inspiration and new relationships with people. Don has given people that are really good at their craft, closely related to leather and sometimes more distant, a way to connect and share with a wider audience. Never been to a leather show but Don’s podcast is a little like that; instead of going to a show or stopping the work by walking into a leather shop and asking a question, one podcast can be listened to by many people. But the time spent by Don and his guest is only spent once.

    Inspirational
Very well done content. The conversation had in many of these interviews is top hand knowledge and advice that fits across any service trade. Bonus is capturing the history of these trades from the men and women who have perfected them

This podcast plays in my saddle shop all the time.
Don Gonzales does an amazing job with yet another craft that encourages other makers and give insight into the art of trades that have been lost to the rest of the world.

    Keep it coming…
Interesting guests coupled with personal stories from the host keeps me engaged in the conversation. It’s not a typical interview, more like a conversation from a curious person truly engaged with what each other has to say.

    Thank you
Podcast is fantastic. Been following your YouTube stuff for a few years as I’ve slowly got into leatherwork. Always felt I could be a craftsman, but never took a plunge into actually trying. My dad is a oil paint artist, and I feel I get my artistic genes in me from him, out of me in leather. It’s awesome to listen to all craftsman’s and learn from others, snd just listen while working. Thanks for putting this together, Don and all guests! Carson Fillin, Kuna Idaho.

Great podcast not just for leather workers
I’ve been a fan of Don Gonzalez on YouTube for years. I was really excited to hear that he started a podcast. I was not expecting what he delivered. He is a natural interviewer and shines as a podcaster. Asking great questions and relating his own stories in the conversation. I am riveted no matter the subject matter and I found that I really enjoy those episodes that aren’t directly leather working related. I look forward to each and every episode.
