Self Taught Artist

97

What do Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and I have in common? We're all self taught artists. I stumbled around in the dark as I started my artistic journey... I didn't know what paints to buy, how to varnish my work, or the differences between painting mediums. The mission of the Self Taught Artist podcast is to help artists (and aspiring artists) learn and fully discover the joy of making art. We will cover everything from the basics of painting, to how to sell your work, and beyond.

    Very informative show
Hi I am a dot artist and I paint on mostly stones. A few weeks ago I searched for a podcast for artist and found your podcast. I am so happy to find you! You are so knowledgeable and I’ve learned so much already. Your delivery is so easy for me to understand, it feels like you’re talking directly to me. I already shared your podcast with my FB group. Thank you! Instagram.com/soulfuldots

So glad I discovered this self taught artist Teacher
I am so inspired by your messages. I just started listening but have been following your advice. Writing my goals, listing my rocks…I do have a question you may have answered in a previous podcast. How do I know if I have talent. I paint a lot and have been painting seriously for about eight years, but am doubting if I have enough talent to be the artist I envision. Thanks much.

    A sense of belonging
One of my goals in life is to listen to a podcast, and I felt that I can relate to this morning, because I am also a self taught artist. I’m proud to say that this is my very first podcast that I’ve listen to and I can’t wait for the next episode, while listening to the previous episode, app and posted.

    Inside my head
How does she know, and answer, all the questions about acrylic art that are in my head? She shares information slowly and clearly and always hits the mark.

    Practical
I have not done watercolors in years, and just got interested in it again. I have done craft art, but have not mixed my own paints. I’ve been very interested to hear the practical advice in this podcast, especially new ideas like the split primary color mixing. that was an eye-opener!

I recently considered going to art school for more structure in my art journey and a sense of community. I’m so grateful to have found this podcast instead…I got all of that and then some! Thank you so much!

My best friend! But she doesn’t know it! 😁
I haven’t listened to podcasts much but I found this one recently and have been binging the episodes. I don’t even do that with tv! I painted as a kid and through college but hadn’t picked up a brush really for 30 years. Now I’m trying to learn everything I can and soak up the artistic world. Lauren Kristine feels like my best friend I’ve been missing all these years. Her voice is pleasant and she’s very knowledgeable about the topics. I’ve really enjoyed listening to them and look forward to many more! You can find my art at WatercolorsbyTina.com or on Facebook, Watercolors by Tina. Thanks! Tina Arnall

So helpful to self taught artists
Been listening to Lauren Kristine’s podcast and she has some great advice for new artists. I really enjoyed her last episode on watercolor paints. Never really knew the advantage of tube paint versus pan paint until this podcast. Thanks for helping to educate us novices!

Great for casual or more advanced artists
I like listening to this podcast to motivate myself and pick up a few new pointers. It’s nice to know what others do and how they operate especially if you don’t communicate often with other artists.

    Not a newbie
I’m not a super new artist but I’m so happy to have found this show! You present information clearly, it doesn’t sound gimmicky or condescending. You answer questions that I didn’t even know I had! I look forward to every episode and come away learning something new each time. Thank you!!

    The best art podcast
I’ve found the best art podcast and it is here. This is my companion during runs, while making art, and during long drives. Furthermore, the highest compliment I can give Lauren Kristin (the host) is that I am using her ideas to improve my pedagogy and inform my philosophy of teaching art. This program is a balanced mix of methods for making art and good advice for people on their artistic journey. A review this brief cannot convey how useful these shows have been. Do your artist self a favor and listen in.

The Perfect Podcast for a Self Taught Artist
I am a self-taught artist who has struggled with many of the questions answered in this podcast. I have taken workshops and classes throughout my life, and have learned from them, and own so many art books, but Lauren delivers clarity—both in the message and the delivery. She makes great recommendations that if followed, will help you become a better, more confident artist. I appreciate her generosity in sharing her thoughts and knowledge. For example, I have heard you should paint small, but the way she breaks down the “whys” makes perfect sense. I have read it, but hearing reinforced the message. I am enjoying listening and learning!

    An Invaluable Resource
I recently came across Lauren Kristine’s podcast and have found it a valuable asset in returning to artwork after a hiatus of many years. I was especially inspired by episode 40 on creating a home studio space. After listening, I converted one side of an unused playroom, that has become a toy and game storage room, into a studio for my daughter and I. We love it!

    My Favorite Podcast!
I’m glad I found this podcast. It has quickly become one of my favorites. I love listening to Lauren’s advice from a self-taught artist point of view. I went back to episode 1 and listened to every single episode. I know I will be going back to listen to a few of them because the information shared is so valuable! Many of the topics discussed are ideas and questions that most of us self-taught artists wrestle with one time or another, especially when it comes to selling artwork, using social media, and even tips on how to improve my art! I am inspired by this podcast. Lauren holds a safe space for artists like myself and I love that. Thank you for creating this podcast.

    My New Favorite Listen!
Thank you for creating this podcast and connecting with the Self Taught Artist in me. I’m Shacoya Harris acrylic artist from Florida @CaptainOfMyCraft on ig. I’ve tried a few of your tips and best practices and notice immediately results. Thank You for the advice on using the little bottles of craft paint for the base layer and student grade on top, this turned my painting around!! From Painting small, selling art on ig, mediums overview, acrylic paint deep dive, washing paint brushes, benefits of multiple cups of water, to sending art in the mail i love how you uncover it all with us! Keep doing what you’re doing. Is there an episode on going legit aka business license, trademarking and or taking the leap as a full time artist? Love your content, it’s just what i needed on my art journey ❤️☺️

    Painting small
Hi Manny A Maldonado here. I appreciated this espídico of your podcast. I started painting small January 2021 via Jed Dorsey’s Acrylic University course. Painting small takes off the pressure of being perfect or trying to be perfect for the audience and for other artists. Painting small has lead me to paint daily I just completed my 1 year mark and as of yesterday I was on day 439. Persistence and lots of practice. Check out my art if you want. Instagram: @artbym.a.m Thanks, Manny A Maldonado

    Just what I needed
As a “self taught artist”, I often feel inferior to my peers in the art world. This podcast has really helped with that, especially the “Imposter Syndrome” episode. Lauren gives great tips on so many issues that I’ve had & explains them in a way that is relatable & useful. I really appreciate this podcast & tell all of my artist friends about it

    Awesome podcast for Artist
I have been enjoying the podcast for a while and just wanted to say how helpful and informative it is. I feel like I am in the room with an art friend just discussing art. The topics are well thought out and discussed from the perspective of an artist, which I enjoy immensely. Thank you.
