True Crime #175

You can't spell lifestyle without lies. When the charges against Newport Beach orthopedic surgeon and former Bravo reality star Dr. Grant Robicheaux and his girlfriend, substitute teacher Cerissa Riley, were revealed back in September of 2018, the world gawked at the unlikely criminals. And when a search warrant resulted in a haul that included unlawful guns, drugs, cash, and a mountain of digital evidence, the two were accused of drugging and raping MANY women. Things only got weirder from there. Journalist and podcaster Justine Harman pulls back the curtain on one of the most sordid sex crimes cases in Orange County history.

    Enjoyable and frustrating
This podcast is an interesting listen. It’s also insanely frustrating. There are about 5 really interesting stories here. Unfortunately trying to report all of them as a single unit doesn’t fully address any of them.

    Really enjoyed it
I enjoy everything audio chuck does!! You guys get me through the work days plus I’ll make my fiancé listen to it on car rides. Thank you audio chuck. This really helps get all the victims light so their killers/ attackers can be caught. You guys have opened my eyes to whole new world of crime and safety. Please don’t ever stop!!

    Background music too distracting
Background music plays constantly while the host is talking. Such a shame, really looking forward to this story. Please pay attention to your neurodivergent audience -- background music makes it impossible for us to listen to the podcast at all. I literally cannot hear a word she's saying because of the competing music. It's not the volume, but the fact it's even there. Maybe hire some ND folks, they will tell you. Thank you.

Not really worth the time I spent listening…
This series was super hard to follow. There were many tangents that only served to confuse the listener. I understand that the host and producers were trying to emphasize certain parts of the story with outside guests and phone conversations with experts, but by the end of each such segment, we were just left thinking, “why are we hearing from this person again?!”… not effective. Additionally, the audio just plain sucked. The recorded court scenes were garbled most of the time, you couldn’t really decipher the content, and many times didn’t even know who was talking. Yes, the host introduced the clips, but somehow, none of these introductions seemed to land. Also the volume levels for each type of audio should have been mixed properly so that you don’t have to keep fiddling with your volume to hear low parts or shield your ears from louder segments. And, we could really have used better judgement when editing. Was it necessary for us to have to sit through the little part about the guy getting the grease off his hamburger meat before the host and him started talking about the case? No. It just made me forget what was happening. Just pretty bad all around. Kind of expect a little better from Audiochuck.

    Lazy editing and couldn’t follow
The editing in this was horrendous. It was difficult to tell what was an ad and what wasn’t and difficult to follow. The narrator used way too many words and not enough information. Seemed amateur. Story could have been really interesting so that was disappointing.

    A mountains of miscues
The only thing worse than the terrible narrative painted by the producer and host is the introduction song. Painfully misleading the host can not come to terms that the law are played out in court not in her deceitful podcasts. Not saying something didn’t happen but the host can not cope with the fact that the court system 5 years later has ZERO convictions and that’s the facts.
  • EveryLittleThing12
    A podcast you can’t hear
So much of the court proceeding is completely inaudible. Not just a few seconds but long monologues and dialogues. Leaves the listener completely in the dark and annoyed. And I felt a little misled by the narrator. In the beginning it felt like it would be more of a mystery, did this couple do something illegal or not? And the host was going to navigate through that. But it becomes quickly obvious that the host most definitely has her mind made up as to the truth of the story. Which would have been fine if she was forthcoming from the beginning. I found the presentation of timelines and events so jumbled and confusing that honestly I often found myself just tuning out. Do not recommend.

    Hooked me immediately!
I really like the host, Justine, for this podcast. I found her to be very intelligent and well spoken. It was very engaging and I found myself shouting in response to the podcast while cleaning multiple times. It’s really nice to hear something regarding SA and not hear victim blaming which I found very refreshing. I was on the edge of my seat many times and have been scouring the internet on updates in the last 15 minutes since finishing the series.

    Court Audio Kills It
The story is really interesting and well told by the host. All the reviews about “politics” are way overblown, honestly, other than the demographics of the area and a DA election that is directly involved in the case there is hardly any mention of politics. That being said, there are long periods of audio taken directly from court proceedings, which I can appreciate she wanted to include to preserve tone etc. BUT, they are extremely difficult to understand. I missed almost every chunk of audio taken from court proceedings. Couldn’t understand a word. Really sad because otherwise I enjoyed this podcast. Maybe they can clean up the audio (or add her voice over it) and repost.

    Overwrought Host Undermines Interesting Story
The underlying story is quite interesting and salacious. It might have made for an excellent show. But the host can’t keep her emotions in check. This leads to some shrill statements. These include the notion that we all know a man who has sexually assaulted a woman. Or, “one woman’s perfect husband is another woman’s rapist. “ A little over the line. Plus, it’s just hard for non-lawyers to tell legal stories; too much is missed or misunderstood. It’s a big jump from writing at Glamour about next year’s hemlines to trying to understand legal proceedings.

    MEH, politics pulled in
I normally LOVE audiochuck podcasts! This was a sub-par representation of the actual case. When an audience listens to true journalism, we should not be able to tell the journalists political leaning!

Just tabloid-y crap. Boring, cliche crap. Undergrad campus radio productions are better than this.

    Interesting and sad
An interesting, disturbing and sad true story. To think that these people may get away with what they’ve done to so many women. You can get lost in the names especially around the episode pertaining to the court. I enjoyed her storytelling but was disappointed when she interjected her personal political view on January 6 andHer apparent dislike of Trump and any of his supporters which although she doesn’t come right out and say was implied.

    I wish I liked it
The story is interesting and I really tried to like it, but there are some real problems with this show. Sound editing is terrible. The producers chose to include long segments of recorded voices that you can barely hear or understand. Also, the timeline of the storytelling does not keep the listener engaged. It’s unfortunate, because I think the subject matter has potential.

    Politics?
Lost me about 15 minutes into episode 1. Fail to see how politics has anything to do with this. Just a chance for you to espouse hatred for half of your audience.

    Awesome Journalism and Hard Work
Thank You for working so hard on this Podcast to expose the truth! WOW!

    Not as it seems….boring
They make it seem like you’re going to hear about this couple who were swingers, and drugged people, but really it’s just a bunch of talking about what did or didn’t happen to them in court, they should’ve called it OC Boring!

    MEH
I’ve already heard this story. But have heard so much about this podcast that I thought why not give it a whirl. And 10mins into the first chapter it gets political. WHY???? I get having to explain that Newport Beach is one of the few conservative areas in Cali but really MAGA references? I want to get away from that political crap you had to * wink wink* F that up for some of us! And the theme songs is horrible.
  • FL Cowgirl
    Heck no
I thought I’d check it out after “Killed”. But just hard NO. First off, boring and way too drawn out for a true crime story. The “filler” is all biased political talking points. It’s dripping with “MAGA” or conservative stereotypes that are absolutely over played and ridiculous. It’s not middle of the road, true journalism. If they used liberal stereotypes the way they did to conservatives…this would be blacklisted and shamed into the abyss. Choose whether you wish to be a political show or crime…I see why many conservatives had bad reviews. ~signed an Independent

    Loved it!
As someone local to Orange County, I thought this story was well told. The “political” context is absolutely necessary. People who have a problem with it in these reviews either aren’t from Orange County (bc if you were you’d know that the context is absolutely necessary) or are trump supporters. It was crazy to hear this story and recognize every bar/location that was spoken about. I even went to high school with someone mentioned. I remember hearing about all of this but I never knew the complete story. My only critiques of this podcast are the theme song (excruciating to listen to) and the original audio in episode 8 which was hard to make out.

Not going to bother to listen to this podcast reading the reviews about it being political. I tuned in to hear a crime story not someone’s political opinion
  • OwlLover2016
Why all the political jabs at conservatives?
I understand how mentioning the political climate of Newport and the surrounding areas paints a picture for the story but is it really necessary to use the “MAGA” references and alluring to the fact that all conservatives have an “old school way of thinking” therefore they are just all okay with rape because it’s a “good ol boys club” this was just within the first 10 minutes of listening so hopefully the rest of the podcast doesn’t have an obvious political bias because that gets annoying!
  • angelachristineg
Pretty interesting but what is that theme song?!
I’m still in the middle of it, and I have to say I’ve been in and out, so it hasn’t kept me as hooked as some stories. But that theme song is so awful I just can’t understand who would have picked it for their show 🤣 It’s just really a very terrible 5 seconds if a song, and turns me off. But the story is fascinating and pretty unbelievable.
  • angiedenise75
Very dull after the first few episodes
I was expecting more like a true crime deep dive into this story but it was actually very dull and boring. If you aren’t fascinated by legal dramas, I’d pass on this one. The host does insert her personal politics into the podcast a bit which is somewhat annoying because I don’t care if I agree with your opinion or not, that’s not why I’m listening. I finally made it through the entire podcast but learned very few facts about the case but I certainly learned plenty about the host’s political opinions.
  • Ktensrq
    Informative
Good journalism. Very thorough and told in a compelling and clear way. Highly disagree with the reviews stating the host was “too political.”
  • 💁🏼🎉😍💟😁
    Good Listen
Although my political views differ from the host , the content of what this Podcast was about is excellent and presented in an informative way. I feel that people who are giving bad review’s based on the very minimal political references, likely run into that with many other podcast. That in itself sounds like a personal preference or ability to tone out personal opinions and not a review of the podcast itself. I however understand that although someone may have different political views that doesn’t discredit the information or eligibility of one to present such information. Basically I’m saying get over yourself, We’re all given the right to our own opinion, and until you have YOUR own platform to throw your personal views or beliefs in , just listen and move past the very few political remarks made. Highly recommend listening to this story!! Another Win for audiochuck!!

    Why are the ratings low?
This is an excellent podcast and it was really well done. Apparently, people are downvoting it because they disagree w/ the podcaster’s politics? Seriously? Grow up, snowflakes.

    Propaganda
    Overshadowed by liberal propaganda.
  • OceanBrz1976
    Absolutely fascinating
Do not listen to the Trump fans getting upset in the review section. She makes one comment about the conservative demographics of the area which is based on facts and all the Magas freak out. She makes no other mention after her one comment and if that keeps you from listening you are robbing yourself of an intriguing story that is hard not to binge listen to. Very easy to follow and great narration. One of the best I’ve listened to in a while.

    Great Journalism
Being an Orange County Local during all of this, and of the same age range and gender of most of the victims, I am actually stunned that I got so much more information from this podcast than I ever got from local news stations. I firmly disagree with the review I just read about the journalist being “too political”, TRUST ME that is not the case. There are no inklings of the self-righteousness or preachiness that you would normally see from a politically biased journalist whatsoever and I have a feeling that person is a bit blinded by their own bias (living in OC you see a lot of that “anti-feminazzi” type complaining. This podcast is in no way a feminist rant whatsoever. Some people just need to be angry.) This journalist is respectful and persistent. Her transparency is so refreshing and the story is so compelling and important.
  • Apoochchooch
    Come on man
As many others have said - the political bias and opinions were a huge turn off. The host is obviously pretty radical in her political leanings. A few times I wanted to stop listening and delete the show but I toughed it out because the story itself is interesting. Had a hard time deciding how many stars to give. Honestly when it comes to unbiased journalism she deserves zero. But her story telling was compelling, the story itself is compelling and the fact that I could even stomach the full season deserves some credit. The theme song tho?! What on earth was that?!

    Just need 1!
Thank you for taking the time to make this podcast. We need more people telling the victims stories and how our court system handles and treats the victims and the criminals. Thank you! The last couple of your last episodes had me in tears. “We just need one”.

    Agree with open bias
Is it necessary to go political to tell the story? Or taking the opportunity to make a dig on a side you don’t agree with?

    Biased
This is a journalist (Who is supposed to be independent) but her political leanings are sprinkled throughout. I couldn’t finish.

    No hournalism, just opinions
As a democrat in OC , The way they present orange county is completely wrong, and really skewed. It’s apparent that this journalist has never been within 1000 miles of Orange County. The story might be interesting, but now that I know it’s not factual I can’t give it any credence. I was very excited to hear this story being done, I recall it very clearly. What has happened to real journalism? It doesn’t exist any longer. Such a shame.

    Biased
Just finished and to say you paint with a broad brush is an understatement. You bring politics into a case about allegations of rape. Your snarky political comments were unnecessary and took away from the story.

    bias but a good podcast.
I don’t like how openly bias this podcast is, but overall, it’s a good podcast to listen to. The music is great, the story is captivating and the way it’s told is awesome. But, I just can’t get over the bias.
  • cdzwilling
    Overly bias
I couldn’t even finish the first episode. Their description of Orange County and it’s politics was one that could come from only a very biased outsider. Orange County Republicans are fiscally conservative and socially liberal. They are forward thinkers, not individuals with backwards thinking. A majority of them are people of color and there is a vocal Log Cabin Republican group. Most of the OC Republican voters did not vote for Trump. I personally grew up in OC and can speak first hand as someone who has participated in OC politics as a female person of color. If you’re going to claim to be a reporter than report on the REAL facts rather than gross assumptions.
  • Elizmce
Interesting but where’s the follow through
Interesting case a presentation though the actual court audio is really hard to listen to because of the audio quality. The 3 stars is because they just ended in May with no communication about any updates or if the show is just over. Idk if I understand Audio chuck having all these different shows they don’t intend on continuing after one season
