Pee Wee Gaskins Was Not My Friend

255

Pee Wee Gaskins was a master manipulator who befriended many of his victims on the way to becoming South Carolina's most notorious mass murderer. He stabbed, shot, drowned and poisoned more than a dozen people. And for his final act he used dynamite in a brazen murder for hire scheme while his victim was on death row. Pee Wee conned everyone around him and charmed one unwitting accessory to assist in this final brutal deed.

Way too many iHeart podcast ads
It’s insane how many ads. I get you can fast forward, but such a waste of time and an annoyance that detracts from story. All of their podcasts are like this. Their advertisers should be upset everyone fast forwards and doesn’t even hear their ads because the amount is ridiculous. You’d think they’d want to stop getting such terrible reviews for this!

    Very interesting!
Too many ads but the podcast flows and keeps your attention. This well produced, narrated and put together.

False locations. Makes the info questionable
Most of the locations given in this podcast and where they are described in the state of South Carolina is completely off. Prospect is on the border of Florence and Williamsburg county, not Florence and Sumter county. North Charleston is not a synonym for everywhere north of Charleston. The areas that peewee gaskins operated in were extremely rural. This podcast makes it seem like he was operating in the suburbs of Charleston and that’s just not true. 45 minutes outside of Charleston, especially during the time period in which peewee gaskins operated was not Charleston. It was rural South Carolina. Small towns like Jamestown, Moncks corner, Bonneau, and st stephens. This podcast gives absolutely no context to how much South Carolina has changed in recent years. If you’re going to go into this whole story you have to describe the context of the place and this podcast does not do that. It also gives undisputedly false information about the location of different places in South Carolina, which makes me question its information about other things in the podcast.

    Had to turn it off
I listened for 5 minutes and had to turn it off. Why the host felt the need to read so dramatically I’ll never know. I was very interested in the topic but it’s unlistenable.

    A Great Binge!
I found myself deep into this story one Saturday. Such a good, deeply addictive story. The crimes of this notorious killer were just part of the story and the relationship between the author hooked me in. Highly recommend

    Excellent
I was familiar with the Pee Wee Gaskins story but enjoyed how this was told from a different perspective. Highly recommend.

    Annoying ads!
Great podcast but the ads are frequent and annoying! Would give 5 stars if not for the ads.

    So Many Advertisements
Whether or not it is the podcasters fault or not two or three minutes of commercials every ten minutes or so is excessive. - Also this podcast doesn’t explain why he was SC most evil man. Sounds like he got other people to do his dirty work and then he told on himself. Interest is piqued insomuch that I’ll seek out other means to learn more about this ornery fella.

    great info
Ok..this podcast had way too many commercials. That to me was the only negative.. this podcast had great information...I liked the host high pitched husky voice...I know many said the some info was repetitive but in the last couple episodes I understood the purpy of the repetition....it kinda connected everything...

Narrator’s one dimensional news noir voice is rediculous
    Unlistenable

    Nah
Pee Wee Gaskins is fertile territory for a podcast, but this one misses the mark. When people download or listen, they expect to hear about Pee Wee, and beginning at near the end of his criminal career robs the narrative of a real sense of where he was from, what kind of person he was, and just how awful he really was. This was a child rapist, possible cannibal, killer on untold numbers, but instead we are treated to a story about a gas station robbery he wasn't even involved in. This is one of South Carolina's most evil men, why are we talking about a robber that Gaskins killed in prison? No tension built, no interest piqued.

    Melodramatic
Good information but the narration is overly dramatic. Hard to listen to

    Great podcast
But please no more Chevy ads I’m begging you

    Good subject matter
Good subject matter but too much repeating same interviews and topics.

    Great story… draaaagggged out
This is a fascinating story about Peewee Gaskins. The podcast does a good job of delving into the details and into his psychology but is incredibly dragged out and repetitive. (I heard “I ain’t never kilt no one that didn’t need killing” like 5 times.) The timeline is also all over the place. Could have been shortened to about five episodes and it would have been perfect. There’s too much time spent on extraneous information and commentary.

    Southern Belle
I grew up in Conway,SC and recalled many stories of Pee Wee. This podcast exposed many things that were never addressed from documentaries. Each episode will have you on the edge of your seat! It gives a good account of Pee Wee, the victims, & the outsiders point of view, all in one. May God bless Mr. Jim Beatty & his family.

    Interesting podcast
Enjoyed the podcast. However, I could not give it 5 stars because of the way they kept replaying certain sections across numerous episodes. Made it a little confusing and repetitious.
  • CoffeehouseFan
    Really?!
The guy who was interviewing that killer should have been prosecuted for his participation in the killing of the death row inmate! He knew better than send things like that through the mail! If the killer was a trustee of the jail he would have had to come up with an alternative plan with items on hand. Just another example of who can and do get away with murder.

    Disappointing
Too many episodes. Repetitive. Disorganized. And two-minute long commercial breaks! Intriguing story told in a very poor manner.

    Couldn't Stop Listening
I literally just binge-listened to this podcast. The way the story comes full circle in the end was shocking. The first person accounts and interviews from those who knew Pee Wee Gaskins brings you deep into the mind of this mass murderer. It's chilling.
  • LNT1968
    Interesting but super repetitive
This story is fascinating but it could have been told in half the time. The exact same Interview clips were used several times in different episodes and the story got off track many times.
  • gpd209
    Hard to follow
I’m sure there’s a great story in here somewhere, but the way it is told in this case is confusing and hard to follow. I’m halfway through and calling it quits.
  • TRAD7188
    Don’t waste your time
First few episodes are ok but then the story veers away from Pee Wee and turns into a woke monologue about the racist south. Why can’t these podcasters just stick to the story? And keep their politics to themselves
  • kayferguson13
    The setup is all wrong
Editing is not numero uno for this podcast. The strategy to start from the end of the story could’ve worked had they not tried to tell the ENTIRE story in the episode. I listen to podcasts for pleasure. I shouldn’t have to break out pad & pen to understand a friggin podcast. This one is not complex. The gist, a white man BRUTALLY kills people that trust him, dubbed the “illiterate & more degenerate Charles Manson of the south” but the entire focus is on one black man who killed a white couple at their gas station. Wait, who is the podcast about again? Rudolph Tyner? Got it. The host even dives into THIS guys background. AGAIN, WHO’S THE SUBJECT OF THE PODCAST? Pee Wee who? What did he do?

    Amazing Story!
This is a nail biting, suspenseful, and well produced podcast. The interviews are well executed and the character development is stellar. Since the first episode, I was invested and eager to hear more. This podcast left me speechless and brought tears to my eyes for Pee Wee’s victims, including Jim Beaty. I highly recommend this podcast. It will NOT disappoint. Job well done Doghouse Pictures. I look forward to hearing future productions.

    Incredible
Growing up in SC I thought I knew just about everything about Peewee, including some first hand knowledge from Tony who used to come into my parents shop from time to time. But the story telling and intimate details shared by Mr. Jim taught me a lot more. I have listened to every episode multiple times, well worth it!

    Can’t Stop Listening
Excellent storytelling of the twisted life of Pee Wee Gaskins. Especially enjoyed getting to hear Jim Beaty’s first hand account interviewing Pee Wee for his book. This true crime podcast is a must listen.

Only women can be victims of domestic violence apparently
What an absolute sexist outdated idea. Embarrassing and go figure it comes from the post and courier. The trashiest, lowest, scumiest newspaper around. Nothing like harassing actual domestic violence victims by camping outside their homes to get interviews. Oh your brother was shot and you have 87 missed called? It’s a post and courier “journalist”.

    Why So Much
I need to know why the pod is so focused on background music then the story I have heard this story before and it was from his Biography Final Truth but this story could be told without focusing on sounds and pauses smh....

    Love it
Author/host did a great job on this. I love tuning in each week to find out more details. Love the interviews with original characters from the events. Great story, how have I never heard of PeeWee until now! Thanks for sharing for the victims & their families. Makes me sad for the young girls.
  • Busted Aces
Thought this was about a mass murderer
But in the end it somehow becomes a referendum on race. Yeah, we need more of that right now.

    This is the one.
This podcast really does a deep dive on a truly wild ride that is Pee Wee Gaskins story. I love the way this is told. The narrator is unbiased, and the mixed in phone interviews shine a different light. This is excellent. Keep it up. I look forward to every Monday for the new release!
