Backstaged: The Devil in Metal

99

A time machine through the origins of metal music, its connection to darkness and decadence, the lifestyle of many of its followers and how its upped the ante on the phrase "sex, drugs and rock n’ roll." It might be the colossal doom of Black Sabbath, the cutting precision of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden or the graphic lyrics of Slayer, metal is The Devil’s Music. Some fans have fallen under its seductive spell, turning them into rebellious beasts. Bestselling author and music journalist Jon Wiederhorn is your host with insightful and sometimes outrageous interviews with musicians from over 30 years. Take a trip through the tropes of metal and examine — and sometimes celebrate — what makes metal so lasting. Hear from members of Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax, Motley Crue and many more as we hunt down the devil within and discover why it’s okay, and even necessary, to keep metal alive.

    Love this podcast!!!
Growing up a metalhead in the DC area and loving heavy music starting at age 7, a drummer in a local beach rock band myself, the stories this podcast captures bring so many great memories and relatable moments back! This cast is so well scripted and narrated and I can’t wait for more!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

    It’s pleasantly different
I enjoy this podcast and the host. It’s a different and interesting subject matter that I have never heard before on a podcast. I grew up listening to all kinds of metal from mild to extreme. It’s interesting to get the band members viewpoints on things. Even though I like metal I’ve never been much into gory horror movies so I don’t think the two always go together.

    Pretty good
I’ve read the book, but it’s also great to hear in person interviews with the legends. Also, getting Clem Fandango to work on this podcast is brilliant. “Can you you hear me Steven?”

It not the devil in metal that is the problem it the lifestyle
I grew up in the 80’s saw Judas Priest, Ozzy and Iron Maiden just to name a few and of course I was in a band playing and singing their music. After one of the members of my band and his girlfriend became a born-again Christian, I was curious. I went to a concern and gave my life to Jesus Christ that changed me and gave everything that I was looking for, and 38 years later I still play and am still a Christian. After listening to a couple of the podcasts, one thing is clear this is a justification of the musicians lifestyle. The bands justify their decadence by saying that Christians are we and flawed, and basically if they “dabbled” in satanism or the dark side, they mostly didn’t really mean it. Yet there is no mention of Christian metal bands, or those that became Christians and bailed for that lifestyle. Jeff Fenholt, Kerry Livgren, Dave Hope, Mark Farner, Dan Spitz, Nicko McBrain and Brian Welsh, just to name a few and there are many others that came out of that lifestyle - so your podcast is just one sided, glorifying and justifying one side and putting down and dismissing the other.

Is very enjoyable. I’m a former 20 year broadcaster. It’s fun to learn even MORE tidbits that I had never known. Keep ‘em coming!

    Even Handed Metal History
Research, interviews and delivery are all high quality. For all the stories of excess and outlandish behavior recounted in this series, their conveyance is made in steady form. Its not all sex, drugs and rock n roll. There are many figures in this genre, now legendary, that came from troubled backgrounds, broken homes and experienced harsh discrimination and hardship. Their stories are harrowing, heartbreaking, enlightening, and enthralling. The music hits hard and so do the musician’s stories. Looking forward to more episodes every week

    Same Ol, Same Ol…
I Want to like this, but it’s just the same old stories about the same old bands, that have been told time and time again.

    Trying too hard
I enjoy the content but most of the time it is just the host pumping his chest. Maybe stop using it to promote yourself. If I want to look up what you have written. I don’t need it to be force fed to me. Again the idea is great I’m an 80’s kid and it’s cool to hear most of the content but please stop promoting your entire career.

    Awesome!!
Give this dude a chance! He’s a great writer with some good books under his name, and he is very well researched. Anyway, the SABBATH episode is killer!!! And features some great interviews from our Metal brethren. HAILZ 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

    Dreadfully slow moving
This is about rock, put some energy into it! He says a lot of words without really getting to a point. Because of the very slow talking I had to listed at a faster speed. Took over 8 minutes of I don’t know what before the show started. Unnecessary long silent pauses and silly sound effects. I couldn’t get through the first one but will give the second episode a try.
