Five stars! Essential listen for serious military people
US Army Special Forces vet here. Victor’s thorough understanding of military history, ancient and modern — coupled with his philosopher’s mind and insight — are a force of nature. Also appreciate the knowledgeable and well timed interplay of co-hosts Jack Fowler and Sami Winc. Sami brings a smart witty female perspective to highly masculine discussions. This old Green Beret thanks the entire VDH Team! Update, 18 April 2924: the closer we get to November, the more closely I listen to Team Victor. Last weekend’s discussion with Sami — kudos to her for the courage to bring up the monumental odds against Trump — and to prompt Victor for his insights on what is really shaping up to be a fight for civilization. Thought; if Victor could get together for a discussion with Prof. Jeffrey Hall (_Winning America’s Second Civil War_, also on the Federalist Radio Hour podcast) it would be noteworthy.

    Get smarter
VDH does the heavy lifting. You don’t have to waste anytime by listening to anything that doesn’t matter. Never have heard anyone this prepared to discuss anything. I am jealous in a good way.

    It’s Become Unlistenable
I used to enjoy this podcast, but over the past 6 months it’s become unlistenable neocon boomer slop. Every episode now it seems is about Israel, Israel, Israel. It’s all VDH talks about and his rambling apologias on Israel’s behalf are obsequious, unconvincing, and downright embarrassing. It’s degenerated to Hannity-level stuff, really. The show needs to regain its focus on issues that Americans actually care about. It should also go back to recording 2-3 times a week, as it’s become tedious and repetitive with the increased frequency.

Outstanding. The most scholarly show that I listen to. Question. Will tribalism in American drive it the way of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire? The Hapsburg state.

    Great Shows…!
I travel frequently via air and always download the most recent episodes to listen to on my flight. Nothing makes my flight go by faster than listening intently to VDH. Excellent programming, I thoroughly enjoy!

    Sowell Soothing
Always look forward to hearing VDH’s great insight on current affairs and also historical events. Years ago I would listen to G. Gordon Liddy’s show and he would read Thomas Sowell’s column and comment that Mr. Sowell was the smartest man in America. I think VDH just might now be the smartest man in America! Would love to hear Victor’s thoughts and opinion on the G Man and maybe a refresher on Watergate. Keep up the great work!!! DK

    YES to swag!
This is my favorite podcast. Victor’s intelligent, rational discussion of events ancient and current, and the similarities he points out between the two, are unparalleled. I just heard Jack mention swag. I think I need a tank top that says “Sober and Judicious.” While wearing it, I will know a lot about the quality of humans I encounter if they recognize that phrase.

    VDH WAR EVAL.
Excellent with VDH Calm measured insightful. Sadly the negative is cohost. Mr. Fowler was a disgrace. Too little of Professor Hanson who is outstanding. Again Mr. Fowler loud verbose and inappropriate in his ad presentations. Victor and Sami are great. I now will only listen to podcasts with Victor and Sami. Although he has hogged in on this one. Anything to demean Sami.

I enjoy this podcast very much. Thank you for being just an average everyday American citizen we can all relate to. You seem to put into words what we all feel about things in this country. You are always humble and thankful and it reminds me to be also.

    Checking under the bed
I’ve enjoyed your show for a couple of years now but I think I’m out. I understand that many people in this country are unconditional supporters of Israel but to see the same tactics used as BLM, ie, shut down the conversation with charges of racism, is disappointing. The same people who mocked the idea that America is inherently racist are now telling us (since October 7) that the country has antisemites under every bed. It’s ridiculous and you know it. But the last straw was Friday's show when you deliberately omitted the fact that Israel attacked an embassy when discussing the “taking out” of IRGC generals. This is a dramatic escalation crucial to the story. Your less informed listeners might draw the (correct) conclusion that Israel’s intention is to draw the US into a direct war with Iran.

    Very Biased
Lots of interesting viewpoints, but Hanson is mindlessly pro-Israel. Just know that if you subscribe.

    Great podcasts always
Thank you Victor for your wonderful podcasts, I really enjoy all of them. Your voice is very calming and reassuring even in this terrible mess we are in now. I am learning a lot from you and I thank you for making me a lot smarter than I once was. I also enjoy seeing you on Fox News as a guest. Monique Stanley in GA

    Sunny
I love the show! (Fan of VDH for more than a decade). Eyore has the most brilliant perspective on humans—my mother taught me “there is nothing new under the sun” and VDH brings it home each week with ancient scripts and perspectives from Ancient Greece, Rome, Byzantium, etc. (I’m a top student at 63!). My reason for commenting is Sunny—each week you lather us with your voice—warm honey lathered with melted butter. I know I’m not the only one who enjoys this part of your podcast! Anyway, keep sharing your commentary and know your listeners enjoy both of you! 😊 Darrell from Whidbey Island

Dr. VDH, You are the Gran Poobah of conservative intellectual discourse, and thank you for your wisdom. Can you comment on Dr. Bob Woodson and his approach in and with the black community ? We never hear you mention Dr. Woodson. Thank You , Scott

    Stolen valor
I just listened to your Podcast analyzing Biden “I’m not demented” press conf. Everytime corrupt Joe invokes his son Beau’s death he not only steals other veterans valor but also his son’s valor as well. There is a “Stolen Valor” law out there. The man is despicable—he went out to lunch on his poor first wife and daughter’s death for 50 years. After latter, he then took another man’s wife while driving around in poor husband’s corvette which I believe he wrecked…. That’s the least of this creep’s crimes.

    Jack Fowler whom?
April 4 24, update: mostly what VDH is saying is truth however the more I listen the more what he says comes across very whiny . And mostly I can’t tell if it’s the Victor Davis Hanson show since Jack Fowler drags out his questions but yet has no problem quickly articulating sponsorship and comments that listeners make about the podcast. Please please please Jack stop stealing precious time away from the most brilliant now famous VDH Thank you VDH for educating my mind and for your weekend shows with the great Sammy.

Professor Hanson With apologies to the ministry that distained your vulgar and simplistic use of the English language .I hope I write for others that greatly appreciate your Churchill like dialogue with Mr. Fowler in discussing weekly topics. Thank you for making subjects understandable for us mere mortals. Respectfully Bruce, Grand Rapids, Michigan

    Thank you
I so look forward to your podcasts. Thank you for your calm, thoughtful look at current events and the wonderful history lessons. They are a welcome part of my week. I especially appreciate the glimpses into your farming experience. I did want to address Sami’s question on the resurrection of Jesus. Your lengthy answer never actually touched one of the most important reasons. Jesus’ sacrifice of His life for humanity’s sin would not be complete until the Father accepted it. The resurrection was proof of that acceptance, proof that our debt was wiped out by His blood, proof of His victory over death. Romans 6:23, Colossians 2:9-15

    History
I love your podcasts. Your application of the lessons of history to current events is priceless and very much needed for the saving of our republic. But the delay in broadcast cripples us in your audience by depriving us of your clarity of thought when the issues are fresh. By the time we hear your views the country has moved on to newer events. It's always interesting to get your take but by the time we get it everyone is discussing more current events. Thanks.

I live in Modesto and work in Firebaugh and I am surprised at the difference in the labor force. The further you get from highway 99 skill set is much lower, u quickly find that the State is subsidizing the labor force with welfare/ section8 housing so on. Something I don’t hear much discussion on is how the State is fleecing the company’s through taxes, environmental and labor laws to pay for this. They are ready hurting companies with the California meal break laws giving employees 3 years to file lawsuits against employers. It goes on and on. Thank you for educating me Owen G

    The Oracle of Selma
Writing my 2nd review for Professor Hanson. I’ve been listening regularly for 6 years. Victor is a wealth of knowledge as a classicist and his juxtaposition with modernity is priceless. However, there are few conservatives in the movement has beholden and blinded to Jewish power as Hanson. His “hot takes” on Israel and their hegemony over the US is absolutely groveling and pathetic. Please remain relevant Prof. Hanson and stop holding water for these people that hate you and the United States
  • Matt 5237
    Certainly appreciated and great discussion
VDH proffers news of the day with a wealth of historical knowledge. I highly recommend Carnage and Culture. But the ads are getting out of control! How much of the pod is selling stuff. Raise your prices on these ads there’s just too many.

Nobody explains it better then VDH! An Uber intellect that is easy to follow. Just finished up the dying citizen. A masterpiece that hits all bases. Extremely thorough and informative writing by Mr. Hanson. Thank you for being a beacon of hope!

    40000 men lost
Victor Being a downstate rural Illinois resident your knowledge is so spot on! Rural Illinois is very similar to your experience in the ag production area of California! I’ve always had a interest in USA history especially WWII and Vietnam wars, learning from history. I had a neighbor growing up that drifted through life farming in Illinois then Alaska back to Illinois farming in different jobs off the farm. He always owned a Cessna 170 and weekends were airplane rides with Smitty. He flew P47 Thunderbolts out of England and lost his hearing from the engine and guns noise. We traveled to Peoria in the 60’s to watch the Battle over Britain and was a little emotional on the hour ride home to Fulton county. Same with the movie Patten. A few weeks you discussed the B17 war of Europe and your dad’s involvement. And the very bad planning and mistakes and maybe the USA Air Force command staff arrogance of fighting ability of the Super Fortress. My youngest daughter told me about the Masters of the Air series and I’m to the 5th episode and am better understanding your statement about the 40,000 brave men that were sacrificed during the early learning curve and lack of good flyer coverage in the battle! Thanks Fred Butt

Masters of the Air TV Series!

    Jim Plunkett!
I enjoyed Victor’s recounting of Jim Plunkett’s football career. Two amazing facts to add -Jim’s parents were legally blind and, as a consequence, his family’s financial situation was always tenuous. Originally drafted by the perennially inept Boston Patriots, Plunkett was seen as the savior of this luckless franchise. Jim’s team was extremely weak and the coaching staff and management even worse. He literally ran for his life during his five seasons with the Pats. Somehow, despite the tough hand he was dealt, Plunkett preserved and won two Super Bowls and Super Bowl MVPs, proving good guys can finish first. He should be in the NFL Hall of Fame.

    Love the show!!!
I’ve seen you for years on Fox but didn’t know you had your own podcast until you went on Megyn Kelley’s podcast for the first time, and I’m so glad you did! I listen to every episode. I’m 34 years old, and I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but my grandparents passed away several years ago and I like to think of you as another grandparent passing on life stories and wisdom. I hope you continue this podcast for many years to come!

Army Values, contra Duty, Honor, Country Comments - Poor Taste
Good afternoon - I've been a couple-year listener to VDH, both from the early days of the Trump administration and speeches on YouTube from Hillsdale all the way through the regularly tuning into the Apple Podcast almost daily. I also serve as an Army National Guard chaplain and have 2 combat deployments under my belt. I'm a recent Army War College graduate through their Fellowship Program at Tufts University/The Fletcher School for Law and Diplomacy. Additionally, I've found the Hoover Institute a reliable source of geo-political assessment and consider myself an ardent social conservative. This is the first time I've had a sour taste in my cognitive palette from VDH, and it was for the commentary on the USMA's/West Point's change in mission statement. Jack Fowler, in his recitation of the new mission statement admitted regarding the Army Values: "I don't know what they are...maybe it's like getting a pot of gold at the end..."--he further went on to say, "Victor, no more duty, honor, country." Before the ensuing distracted diatribe against this move, I'd recommend doing more than read the inadequate CollegeFix website story (or the cross-referenced Western Journal article). Neither website went on to describe or reference what the actual Army Values are...and they are: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, Personal Courage (spells out the acrostic: LDRSHIP). To be sure, "Country" is no longer in the mission statement, however, I think "Selfless Service" and "Integrity" are WELL endowed values to substitute for "Country"--notwithstanding, the Army's definition of "Loyalty" is sourced in loyalty to our oath of enlistment/commission with reference to our US Constitution. Certainly, this makes up for the lack of "Country" in the mission statement. The bottom line, as the chaplain corps, among others within profession of arms, seeks to impact the moral character of our formations, this change is actually helpful to synchronize the (spiritual?) formation of cadets (leaders-in-training) with the balance of the Army that aspires to live the Army Values (LDRSHIP). I'd like to remain a faithful listener, however, I'd encourage a little deeper digging (or at least check with someone within the Army who would/could speak to the ethos/spiritual emphases...perhaps a chaplain or two) before commenting. Respectfully, Chris M

The building of a Gaza Harbor
I see the building of a harbor as only the first step. The U.S. will need to assure the delivery of the aid to the people, and that will be Biden’s next step. Military convoys protected by our military. Before you know it, this endeavor becomes Somalia with the U.S.troops assuring aid deliveries. And eventually, the Hamas fighters will begin hit and run attacks against the U.S. convoys. And then it repeats the Battle of Mogadishu. That becomes an entanglement that is difficult to leave, and will lead to casualties.

    Victor Hansen show

    The Great VDH
VDH is perhaps the best historian of my lifetime (I’m >60). I love history and VDH has a G-d given gift to succinctly and accurately tell history that is very engaging. I just love listening to him. I read his publicly posted columns too. His podcasts should be mandatory listening for all people.

    Never enough VDH!!!
I probably first encountered VDH from cable TV news appearances, but he was firmly placed in my memory from interviews with Dennis Prager and Hugh Hewitt. VDH excels in putting events into their proper perspective and making contemporary and historical connections that most observers can’t or won’t make. I discovered this podcast about 8 months ago and it has become a can’t miss for me. Besides current events, I love Victor’s insights into the academic world, past and present rural/farm life, his truck woes, and classic films. After the current series on ancient literature, I’d love a series on classic movies!! I like both co-hosts and think they do a great job. Keep up the great work!!!

    Great Show
Victor’s insightful take on current events interwoven with a history lesson. One of my top 3 favorite podcasts. Please keep up the great work!! P.S. Jack should think about the cannibalistic, Haitian warlord named “Barbecue” before his next infrared grill advertisement. Maybe not the imagery the company wants to evoke. Thomas Y.
  • TPM1020
    Excellence in Content and Delivery
I look forward to each of the four VDH podcasts every week as well as the occasional one-on- one interviews. I do want to say that I think the somewhat negative characterizations of Jack Fowler are simply incorrect and unnecessary. The way he introduces a new topic and the back and forth kibitzing between the two adds interest, insight, and an element entertainment to the show. I have learned that understanding any topic in depth can be enhanced by podcasts. The information gleaned from daily news shows doesn’t even come close. Podcasts provide another level of knowledge towards keeping one truly informed in more than just a cursory manner. And VDH and Fowler are masters in the realm. So, get off Jack’s back, folks! TPM
