Southlake

Politics #220

Southlake, Texas, seems to have it all: stately homes, intense civic pride, and above all, terrific schools. So when a video surfaced in 2018 showing Southlake high school students chanting the N-word—and when Black residents came forward to share stories of racist harassment and bullying—the school board vowed to make changes. But the unveiling of the Cultural Competence Action Plan set off a backlash that’s consumed Southlake, fueled by a growing national crusade against critical race theory. Hosted by NBC News national reporter Mike Hixenbaugh (host of the hit podcast Do No Harm) and NBC News correspondent Antonia Hylton, Southlake tells the story of how one idyllic city became the test case for a new political strategy with national repercussions.

    Need to know.
Thoughtful with insight to what’s happening in schools across the USA. How racism and bigotry has raised its ugly head and the damage it’s creating.

    Beautiful and thorough writing
Thank you for such an amazingly thoughtful and thorough podcast. Keep it going!

    There’s more to the story
Great show. Southlake is also home to Gateway Church. Not a town I’d even go to for a meal in a restaurant, much less live in. Also listen to Grapevine, another great podcast. Well done!

    New season
I agree with review that says Keller school district should be next. They are a true petrie dish of everything you discuss.
  • Justdance18
Love it! Have you done any research on Keller?
I loved Southlake and Grapevine. You must look into what’s happening in Keller too. It’d make a great season 3!

    Great Podcast
I love how this podcast is told. The only thing I don’t love is how Republicans are perceived and the jabs at Donald Trump. I think these kids are products of their environment. These parents need to DO BETTER. I am a republican and I know better, but this is great podcasting!
  • blainek11
    Powerful
Both seasons of this show are extremely well researched and reported on and are very powerful. It’s hard to not feel strong emotions listening to the amount of hateful rhetoric being thrown out to our fellow humans. I hope the kids in both of these school districts know we are on their side.

    More like South Flake!
Great podcast which shows how important it is to vote. It’s ok to know about history and see both sides. Not just one that suits your rich lifestyle.

    One of my favorites
This podcast is an example of truly amazing journalism. It is very insightful to the state of our schools and America. It is very well done.

    Disgusting
I currently live 10 minutes north of Southlake so I heard about this when it was going on quite frequently. Being one of those people that “real”Texans hate, someone from Los Angeles that is apparently trying to ruin their state I laugh at their ignorance. I grew up in a city identical to Southlake in California but was taught acceptance and respect for everyone. The parents that push this agenda are an embarrassment to mankind and should have been sterilized so they couldn’t procreate little racists that have a sense of entitlement that is beyond comprehension.

    Raven is a Hero
I’m an English teacher, and I am white, teaching at a pretty diverse school, and I’m currently standing in a grocery store aisle where I just listened to the conversation you recorded with that entitled, ignorant boy and your principal, and I had to stop and write this review to tell you how incredibly calmly and rationally you confronted that person and refused to let him make excuses and pretend he doesn’t know why his language is a verbal assault on the people around him whether he intends it to be or not. I know there is a racist trope of white people calling a Black person ‘articulate,’ so let me be clear: if ANY of my students stood up to that situation and expressed themselves so clearly and beautifully under that kind of pressure, I would be immensely proud to have had that courageous person in my class. I also hope that if this situation happened in my school, I will do a better job handling it and holding students accountable for their choices than your principal did. You deserve to be surrounded by people who will stand up for you and not make excuses, especially educators! Bravo Raven, and you’re my hero.

Southlake crazies infiltrating Tarrant County commissioners Court
These same type of people show up when Commissioner Tim O’Hare calls them. They just voted to not pass through grant money from the Feds to Girls, Inc. An “include everyone” girls program. Show up to court and push back against these radically different kinds of “Christians.”

    Very biased
Not that I expected anything different from NBC, but the whole podcast is a thinly veiled piece of liberal socialist propaganda.
  • Annielur
    Common sense
People are many times products of environment, it’s obvious that the teachings of CRT ,that all white peoples are inherently racist is highly flawed. This teaching brings about more animosity between the people than healing. We are a mixed race family. None of us are privileged or disadvantaged because of race . To teach children they can’t excel because of their race is a disservice.

    Call me dumb
Astonishing how you clump racism accusations with pedophilia encroachments, 2 very different issues. These young vulnerable children seeking affirmation from adults whom are supposed to protect and affirm truth in them only to subject their child to subjective truth, Instead mutilating their children. Where is cps, these adults being harmful to kids!! Wouldn’t this be pedophilia and child abuse? 17 and under is still a minor and illegal for adults to discuss sexual content with minors-hello!! This is great journalism as it literally speaks directly into how one-sided, narrow minded, bigotry nbc is. And to whom ever left the comment, they won’t step foot in TX again bc of ‘the level of racism in this country’…again just goes to show how ignorant people can be, one TX is not a country that would be USA so I guess you should leave the entire country and two lumping everyone together in one big racist group again feeds right into the one-sided, narrow minded, bigotry Left…great job, you nailed it for everyone listening

    Revealing but not surprising
Kids are not born racist. They are a product of their parents, schools, mentors, churches, etc. Teenagers are also particularly cruel in the best of circumstances. The recordings of the administrators are cringe-worthy but indicative of people just trying to make the problem (kids who don’t fit the MAGA mold) go away. I can’t imagine being an African American and staying in such an awful place. Why do that to your children?
  • Scam delight
    Wow
I am sick to my stomach at the level of racism in this country we will never step foot in Texas again! This is fantastic journalism

    Excellent journalism
This story and this timeline of events are so important for public education advocates to understand. As a school board member myself, I have been on the receiving end of some of these well coordinated efforts to disengage important work focused on inclusion and equity. The parents on the attack are not bad people, but they are terrified. The daily diet of fear they are being fed is hurting kids. We have to continue to professionally and bravely stand up for all kids. Respond with kindness and love in spite of the offensive misinformation. Kids need to know we are standing up for them. Thank you for this podcast!

    Great podcast
I’m grateful for the opportunity to be learning about this, and the podcast is so well done. I’m sad and, as a white person, ashamed, of this disgusting ugliness. Our country needs to do better NOW, not later. With the far right insanity we now live with, though, it’s hard to feel any hope at times 😪

    Truth Exposed!
As a person of color living in Southlake, I am appalled by the amount of chaos that has been going on in this community. It is a shame that the racist fascist ideology of the far right has invaded our school board and has resulted in a fascist takeover of a school board that was intended to work on behalf of ALL students in Southlake. All the “anti-CRT” leaders in Southlake have all of lost my respect. I thank the hosts of this podcast for being brave and not backing down even when some of these leaders were intimidating them because they accused them of pushing woke ideologies. I hope there will be more episodes to come especially when new details on the federal investigations are released.
  • TheGuardianSports
Typical biased woke nonsense from NBC
Southlake is a top performing school in a wonderful friendly low crime community. Let’s keep it that way. Keep your liberal agenda to yourself and to your own community. #ProtectTheTradition

    Amazing Journalism
I can only echo the other reviewers who praise this 8 episode podcast. I listened to most of it while traveling. I am bound to have another go at listening to this again, as details and review give me insights I missed the first time around.

    Riveting!
I binged this series so fast. Love investigative reporting like this. So good!
  • jaiboregio78
    So disappointed.
So biased! Heroic activists fighting evil anti-CRT racists in a school district that's 35% non-white. Please... The worst part was when one of the concerned parents, a Hispanic veteran, has to record the interview to ensure that the journalist won't twist his words. Does the journalist reflect as to why minority parents are afraid of her? So little self-awareness...
  • Girlie tomboy

    Absolutely Fantastic
Incredible reporting about a microcosm of America in 2022. Disheartening. This is how the Holocaust happened. Fox News is the propaganda. The country is gobbling it up.

Important listen, especially for North Texans
I have appreciated the thorough and well structured work in this series. As someone who grew up in North Texas, the social and political dynamics portrayed here are spot on. I hope that Texans listen, learn, and take action to create more inclusive schools and communities.

    Captivating podcast
Some of these reviewers are completely right, why focus on all this negativity in Southlake and not even mention all the good things people are doing there? Sure, like that one completely over-rated, Oscar-winning movie by that obviously biased Spielberg. Why’d he focus so much on all that negativity “allegedly” caused by a few bad apples? Why not show us more of the good things those Germans did? I’m certain that it would have had a much greater, positive impact on everybody that watched it. Note: I couldn’t BE more sarcastic than in this paragraph. You can tell that this was a great show on this topic because the reviews here vary from loving the podcast to condemning the hosts. Some of these claim that the hosts are biased because not as many on the anti-diversity training side were interviewed. Well, let’s see, that just might be because a lot of those people that were contacted by the podcast refused to be interviewed, showing an immense paranoia about the media. Guess what, these hosts still managed to acquire lots of audio of those people expressing their views, and it shows that lots of those bigoted kids that harassed classmates for their race/sexual orientation did not fall far from the tree. Sadly, the nation has not progressed as far as I would hope from 1957 when Elizabeth Eckford (one of the Little Rock Nine) walked to school surrounded by white classmates yelling at her. This was a fantastic podcast, drew me in immediately from just the brief previews. Just ignore those really low reviews and give this podcast a listen. Those minority/lgbtq kids interviewed, that suffered abuse at these schools, show much more maturity than even many of adults we meet in the series. I just hope that many more follow their example.

Lol these reviews. Feel sorry for the kids who live out there.

Clearly Only One Side of the story
Although this podcast was entertaining, it was very one sided reporting. It is hard to tell if the NBC reporters intentionally did this or if they were the product of being part of a slanted media. Repeatedly they tried to interview people on both sides of the issue. However, they were unable to get interviews from all sides. This is an example of the widespread one sided reporting in our country. As a whole people just don’t trust reporters anymore. True unbiased journalism is dead no matter what side of an issue a person stands. Sad that this is the state of our country right now. Reporters use to report only the facts and allow people to make up their own minds. Now, the media feels as though they need to influence how people think.

    Newton? Greenwich?
I’m curious why you haven’t done a podcast on the incidents in Newton, Massachusetts and Greenwich, CT. Almost identical stories, except you can add anti-semitism to the Newton story. Now why would that be?
  • drhvghji
    Very Sad
It makes me very sad to see that what this shows is not everyone should count. Diversity is something that kids and adults will encounter in their lifetime. In school, college, work, church and in everyday encounters. To the parents who teach their children this and their kids treat others they way they want to be treated with respect thank you. To the parents who allow their children treat others the way they would NOT like to be treated, you do have influence.

    Racial gender bulling
I was disgusted at the way the school handled seems to handle the racial bulling I would never want my kids raised in a place where the adults teacher and other adults are making excuses for bulling of any kind u should all b ashamed of ur self and ur kids

    EM FOR PRESIDENT!
So good. Em should run for president in the future. Their ability to articulate at such a young age and in such an emotionally traumatic situation is astounding. And Duhan is an idiot masked as a nice guy. Really great/infuriating listen!
  • Omnibulpot
    Amazing bonus episode
I really enjoyed this series, but at the end I felt a little hopeless. That last bonus episode was incredible, what can we do to get more of them?
  • the real southlake
    The real story…
Liberal elite “reporter” from nyc meets loser “reporter”from Houston. Decide they hate America and amazing cities like Southlake. Talk to the same 5 people who also hate America and Southlake. What a joke, biased story line. How about you focus on ALL students who achieve greatness here and the wonderful families who live here. How about the many cultural events we all celebrate together? Your hate is disgusting.
  • EricTaylorPhD
Progressives: the salt of the earth
SouthLake pod cast is a raw and realistic presentation of the conservative (supporting status quo) & progressive (embracing change) positions as it reveals itself in the issues of racial & sexual diversity. The hosts and editors have shown excellence in journalistic integrity. This is the required basis for insight into fundamental truths. We all need to remember as defined above, none of us should identify as strictly CONSERVATIVE or PROGRESSIVE. When an issue is presented, like the initial defacing of monuments with racial epithets, the problem solving process requires an openness to change (progressive) to find a solution. As one would expect from a well educated community with clear excellence in their public schools, this is their overwhelming reaction in this Texas town. They created the CCAP plan to reinforced the existing student code of conduct. But as the conservative impulse, designed to cast a critical eye on the new plan, gets started it gets derailed into tribal (political) conservative talking point - Critical Race Theory & Reverse Discrimination. Lost was the original need, reminding ourselves of what our belief in nurturing a multiracial Democratic society requires.
